Reviews for How clumsy you are, Miss Ueno.
Back to MangaI liked this but was a little sad that it didn't go further. The art was good and unique. It's easy to recognize Tugeneko's style across other works/anthologies. I really like the style. The plot and development were fine. The day-in-the-life chapters were each fresh and entertaining to keep me turning pages. I think this manga did a good job maintaining my interest over the few years I was reading it because each chapter was its own thing. However, I feel this point is also what left me a bit disappointed in the end. The long explanations of each invention got a tad tiring later on andI found myself skimming those walls of text or skipping them entirely.
The conclusion left me a bit disappointed. The conclusion sort of just happened. For a manga that's about the unrequited feelings of the protagonist and their attempts to change that, I really felt left out to dry with this manga's conclusion and overall general progression of the story. The episodic nature was a really slow burn in terms of relationship development and by the end of it all I really got nothing.
Overall this manga was both a funny and entertaining comedy. However, that's it. The serious romance aspects of this manga were fine in its teaspoon style for a while, but felt not enough and even starved by the conclusion and the way it was handled. I thought this was a great comedy but a poor romance. I would recommend reading it though.
Ueno-san wa Bukiyou is a "romantic" comedy. No, you will not find a deep romance plot, as the manga focuses heavily on the comedic side of things. The episodic nature of the manga makes it perfect for a quick laugh without ever needing to worry about continuity. The simple art style is very charming. Tugeneko's art style is very unique and easily distinguishable in other works and anthologies The characters are the main appeal of the manga, as the dynamics between them drives everything forward from "plot" to even the cheapest of jokes. Overall, I recommend it for those who are into absurd comedy and doesn't mind thelack of an overarching plot
The premise of the manga is interesting on it's face: A girl genius introduces a variety of useful (and sometime's civilization-altering) gadgets in the science club with the ulterior motive of teasing/swooning the guy she likes who's also a member of the club. It follows the same formula of: 1) girl intriduces and explians gadget 2) guy tries gadget 3) Girl monologues her ulterior motive 4) Gadget backfires or someone causes a misfire 5) She ends up embarassed and yelling at her crush for the situation she cause 6) repeatUnfortunately, the gag gets a little tiresome over time and the overall story seems lacking since there's no resolution on her addressing her feelings for the guy she likes. There are some character growth moments from the MC in how she interacts with other schoolmates; which is nice, but not the one you'd hope between her and the crush
I did like the extra detail the translators gave in explaining the cultural significance of each gadget and mang reference in the afterword. Very useful for those that wanted to learn more about those tidbits.
I'd be more likely to recommend this if the main goal of the MC actually happened. Without it, it's just the same formula/gag each chapter (with very few exceptions).
