Reviews for Yamada and the Boy
Back to MangaMy first review so be kind. This is by far one of the cutest BLs I've come across in a long time, beware of the diabetes and laughs you'll garner from this work. I wasn't expecting much coming into this but boy was I wrong. This story has art which is a bit shoddy here and there but that didn't really deter me for the story and character were gripping. Most BLs tend to have the seme or older guy be the more assertive guy. But there were instances where the uke/younger guy took the lead and voiced his opinions and stance on the relationship. The uke also isn'toverly girly to the point it irks you. He was very well established and likeable. It's rare for me to like ukes for this very reason. There is NO rape which is a breath of fresh air. There is consent and just a feeling of pure love. It seems natural and not forced just for the hell of it
You may argue that the straight guy turning gay for one dude is overrused but this was too adorable for me to care.
Like other Ori Mita's works, Yamada to Shounen is a fluffy romance manga. There is not much going on in the story line but overflowing cuteness. If you're looking for a light read, this might be it. Story: 7/10 The story is kept reasonably simple. There are 6 chapters + 2 extras. (The extras are essential.) No drama to stir things up. No slow build-up considering the two characters realize their feelings for each other early on. This manga truly utilizes all the elements of the Slice of Life genre. Art: 9/10 I have always been a fan of Ori Mita's art style, so this comes as nosurprise. No crazy detailed backgrounds; a lot of white space throughout the pages so it's easy on the eyes. Ori Mita truly shines in depicting characters' facial expressions and actions. You GET a lot just from the simple panels she drew.
Characters: 8/10
All the characters in this manga are likable and well-designed. Chihiro has great depth and sensitivity for a high school boy. You will also get to see Yamada-san trying to understand his feelings toward his first male partner.
Enjoyment: 8/10
This manga always leaves me with feelings every time I reread it. The right amount of lightheartedness just works so well. I appreciate it not trying to be edgy, considering how it does touch on the age gap topic.
I strongly recommend this to anyone who likes Shounen Ai, or just Romance in general.
I like to think that they'd live such blissful lives because they deserve it and they deserve each other. Seriously, the small gestures they did to one another are very sweet and looking at it that's how you know your relationship will last for so long because you just live in the moment, you do your best, and you know there's someone waiting for you that will go through the journey together. Chihiro and Yamada are the cutest and how they take care of each other is the level of relationship I want to have. The author has done such wonderful stories that find myselfbinge reading her works!
