MPD-Psycho is one of the most sickest,darkest,mind-shocking,breath-taking,eye-popping-from-your-head thing I've read in a while.And I'm speaking softly now.. What do we have in MPD? We have a detective,who is also a killer,or maybe vice of versa,a killer who is a detective.It's hard to tell.One of the great pluses of this manga is it's complexity,where the reader must understand the way of the twisted killer mind,sometime's this bring's you in the darkes't corner's of your conscious.Creepy. The artwork..the artwork is great,one of the few mangas that actually has Japanese citizens looking Japanese!(seriously,this one is rare) The art is defined by its use of simple, clean lines that bring's the neededatmosphere to the story.

Another thing I'm woefully happy in this manga,it's the beggining.The corpse of a woman who's locked in a cold storage freezer,with it's limb cut of(arm' and leg's as well),and the woman itself drugged to a state of unconscious.The punch line?The girl was sent as a mail to our protoganist. So you see,this is like a test,the elimination's of all the weak reader's with faint heart or easily offended.A survival of the fittest you may say.

So if you're one of those wishing fot a higher enlightment , this is a must read.

This is not for the squeamish, the easily frightened, or those looking for a light manga to read. It is dark and often brutal. The complexity of the plot had me wondering if I should be taking notes, and I actually did end up writing down some details, like the protagonist's personalities, to keep track. That said - if you like both psychological horror and violence, this fits the bill well. Something needs to be said about the nature of the crimes. These are not straightforward homicides. They are grotesque and morbidly fascinating. Oftentimes the victims are tortured in the most creative ways before being killed.There's something bordering on erotic about some of these killings, as well, and that can be even more disturbing to the reader. If you want to venture to the dark side, though....

The story has its bloodshed, but also its moments of slow building unease, and it's highly psychological. The personalities of detective Amamiya are locked somewhere inside his mind, triggered by unknown sights and sounds. It gives a lingering feeling that something bad could happen at any moment. The art balances the mood superbly. Amamiya's expressions are subtle but effective. You can see the horror on his face as he learns what exactly his alternate personalities have done, as he can feel one approaching. You can also learn to tell, just through expressions, when he's switched to a much more dangerous version of himself. The fear that builds then is palpable.

Besides the mastery of expressions, the art is notable for leaving the characters recognisably Japanese. It's certainly all professional and clean, with highly detailed backgrounds and excruciatingly rendered corpses. I'm not an expert on comic styles, but if I'm using the right terms, there's an abundance of high contrast noir influence to be found. I appreciate it for the depth it adds. At the same time, the number of pages that have no screentones, and are therefore simply high contrast black and white, are a bit harsh.

Character - definitely very complex. It takes a while for the personalities to become apparent, but that's a rather endearing quality for me, as I'm very tired of mangas that have such flat characters that you know them right away. This isn't one of those. It makes it all the more rewarding when you discover a new clue to the true character of someone. Also, the criminals are very interesting. I love seeing psychotic minds at work, and this gives me the perfect window to it. Expressions, dialog, actions and movement, they bring you face to face with the essence of insanity. Seeing it made my breath catch more than once, and I was left staring at a page pondering what I had seen too many times to count.

There are some traits, beyond the obvious violence, that would make this manga unenjoyable to some. Mainly, it's very dry. By that I mean - very minimal comedy, no comic relief characters or clueless sidekicks, mostly a dark and technical atmosphere. It's also an involved read, no mindless sitting by and watching things happen. You need to sit down and read it like you would a serious novel.

But if you do decide to go ahead and read it, despite the dryness, despite the crimes depicted... you are in for a treat.

THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS MPD Psycho is not a manga that you think it is. If you came here from mangas like Mirai Nikki, Doubt, Death Note, or Higurashi no naku koro ni, then you'll find nothing interesting in here. I expected to find at least one psycho in the manga, and I found a lot of dead bodies and no psycho. Story: 2 The main character (or one who appears so at the beginning) has multiple personality disorder (abbreviated as MPD), i.e. within him there are more personalities who come out when they want and one of them kills people once in a while. Soon we findout that these "personalities" are computer programs, and you can move them from one person to another. This way we have a new person with MPD every few chapters. Why? Because EVERYONE wants to have those personalities, so they kill each other, take the personalities, and get killed by another, who wants those personalities, and this is repeated over and over again = so boring!

Once in a while, at some points, the manga gives you a feeling that some sort of storyline is evolving, but this hope will get destroyed within the next ten chapters. In other words, manga follows no storyline, and when the author has no more idea what to do with the "main" character, he kills him or her, and continues with another "main" character.

Not too bad. I've seen worse drawings, but unless you're a freak, who has a fetish of masturbating to a dead, NAKED and ripped-apart body, you won't find it nice looking. I'm not bothered by the fact that they're dead, ripped-apart in the pool of blood, but why are they naked? The murderer is not a pervert, yet for some unknown to the reader reason, he undresses all victims! If he would be a pervert, then at least it would make sense!!! Otherwise, it's just a fan-service!

Character: 4

Characters? Do they exist? Not really. Since the main characters, are the personalities that travel from one person to another, and they don't make a little bit of sense. They're completely out of tune with the manga. It feels like the different person made the characters/personalities, and the different person is working on a storyline (that doesn't work well either). Well, I'll give here 4, because I enjoy the personality of Nishizono Shinji (but he's not a psycho!), but really, this and other personalities could have been so much better with just a little touch.

I feel like I have wasted so much time. Honestly I feel cheated! I decided to read this manga, because it has a high rating, and it was supposed to be about psychos! But in reality, neither the manga was good, nor I got to see a psycho. I am really, really upset about the fake ad of "psycho" in the story, so if you look for a manga that has psychopaths, then go look elsewhere, this one has none!

To summarize it in one word = worthless.

This manga is boring. It's nothing more than a poor attempt to shock the reader. I cringe sometimes when I remember some of the things I have read, such as Ichi the Killer but this manga is nothing more than showcase of various self mutilation or play with corpses. The artwork is uninspired. Having read Death Note before this manga, despite it being released years before Death Note, they share similarities. It's as if Light suffers from multiple personality disorder and is also a psychopathic detective. There is so much potential to come across as a shocking piece of work that pushes people out of their comfortzones but this is nothing more than an uninspired work with boring artwork.

I will be throwing this into the "standard manga garbage bin".

I'll be real with you. I still don't know how to feel about this manga. It's engaging, the artstyle is really good and the characters are interesting, but the pacing is really weird for me. It's definitely not an easy read, and it's right in the middle of "this is too much exposition" and being so interesting that you just want to keep reading. However, MPD Psycho starts shifting it's story away from what it was first set up to be. I'm not sure if it ends up being a wasted potential, but it does change as the story goes on. I'm sure that when itwas being published it was hype and people enjoyed it. I mean, it even got a TV miniseries directed by Takashi Miike of all people (though haven't watched that one yet). Yet now it has faded to obscurity, and I wish you good luck with finding the last chapters translated.

My recommendation would normally be to read something else since it's a bit long, difficult to access, and not action focused. But if you do decide to read it, if you're really searching for a mature detective mystery, you'll be met with good worldbuilding and artwork, cool characters and fun, interesting murder cases.
