Reviews for Uwasa no Midori-kun!!
Back to MangaUwasa no Midori-kun! is a great Shoujo, Sports, Gender Bender, Romance that should not be overlooked, due to its hilarious comedy and heated romance. Though it would have been better if the sports gender bender aspect were more realistic (like the movie ‘She’s the Man’), rather than your typical shoujo romance. The story follows the high jinks of our tomboy heroine (Midori Yamate), who wants to seek revenge on the guy she once loved and admired (Hino Tsukasa), by entering an all-boys High School and joining their soccer team. It isn’t long until her ploy involves an unsuspecting guy from the soccer club (Kazuma Shinbashi) andthey work together to keep her secret. From reading this I’m sure you’ve already guessed the kind of manga this is; a sports gender bender about a girl trying to enter a boy’s world but eventually it becomes a fully blown shoujo romance. The story can be very cliché and unrealistic at times, seeing how Midori is the most unconvincing boy ever. Nevertheless if you can ignore these imperfections then you’ll certainly enjoy this manga for its romance, full of surprising developments.
I must say that Gou Ikeyamada must enjoy doing love triangles, because here we get just that. The story mostly revolves around pretty much the only girl in this manga Midori, who’s an interesting change from all the typical shoujo leads. Not to forget the guys; Hino the malicious, sleazebag type and Kazuma the straight-laced, gentleman type. Also there are quite a lot of important side characters, probably enough to make up 2 soccer teams, so getting to know them all is a major feat.
If you’re just coming from this mangaka’s previous work (Moe Kare!!), then you can expect the same old typical shoujo style artwork. The characters are all pretty cute in their own defined way; however I think it spends too much time in chibi form, just for comic appeal.
Overall Uwasa no Midori-kun! without doubt is a very enjoyable shoujo romance manga to read, with plenty of laughs to be had, but it really sucks at being a gender bender. Also the whole revenge thing never really gets off the ground, because she spends most the time smitten over the guy she supposedly hates. It’s a shame that more focus was put into the romance and typical shoujo devices (e.g. emotions) than into actually recreating a realistic game of soccer.
*Be warned, there's some of sexual content.*

This is my first time writing a review so I will try my best. Out of all the mangas I have read so far this was the most touching one of them all. The ending was not quite what I wished for but it touches me the most. The story has great character development and some cute comedy scenes, I intially though it was going to be a tipical "love over heads" manga, but as the story goes on it was quite realistic. I strongly encourage everyone to read till the end as the ending. At the end it really shows how much love isand can be and why I found this manga so good was mainly the character of Hino Tsukasa which made me so touched and proud of him.
This anime should not be overlooked, from its heated romance, lovable characters and amazing comedy scenes. When i first came across this anime i thought it was just going to be another overrated anime with stupid romance scenes and childish comedy but i was completly wrong in everyway the romance is anything but stupid it has a mature side to it and also a very touching side as well and the comedy is just outstanding i fell out of my chair many times and had to even re-read some chapters because it was so romantic and funny that you just couldent get enough plus themix of gender bender and sports fit in perfectly this manga has it all and i would reccomend it to anyone even if your not into sports and gender benders 10/10
Hope you enjoy Uwasa no midori-kun!!
Uwasa no Midori-Kun is a fabulous manga that will be bundles of enjoyment while reading. The character Midori is athletic and outgoing, an easily lovable person to read about. Midori brings humor to the story by being an ace soccer player, sometimes socially awkward, and her personality it great. Ikeyamada Go has beautiful artwork, the two main male characters startlingly handsome and Midori is very cute, even when she is dressed as a boy. The storyline is a bit predictable, but it will still bring great enjoyment. A manga to definately read with its beautiful artwork, wonderful characrers, original plot, and hilarity!
Why a score so low? Because the mangaka Ikeyamada Go continues to fail to understand that consent is a fundamental concept, that rape isn't something to joke about and it's disrespectful for such an event to be used as a plot device. Not only that but her female characters continue to exist as mere things to be owned by male characters and there's this idea that they're worth so much more as long as they're virgins. This author promotes the idea that emotional and physical abuse can be romantic and this infuriates me because her works target younger audiences. I completely lost interest in thismanga from the 1st chapter because it immediatly opens with a rape and the rapist and his victim become the romantic "couple" that we're supposed to root for.
I'm disappointed how little soccer there is in this manga and the ending felt like a huge slap to the face. SPOILERS: The main character spends years of her life chasing after a promise and ultimatly she fails at it.
I like art style but everything else is nauseating.
I give this a 4/10.
Out of all of this Author's work, which I've read maybe only a few, this one has to be the most subversive. Especially the ending which was refreshing change compared to many of the other mangas that have some of the same cliches. The manga handles some tropes which can be tedious in very mature manner, some are completely unnecessary but the ones she does right are really good. Especially the character arcs of some of the more troubling characters are very well done and I actually end up forgiving them. The art style is very distinctive of this particular author, but personally it's notmy favorite. Though I can appreciate that at least it's part of her brand, and it is cute, so it really is just personal taste factor.
One thing I didn't like about this story was the way girls were treated in it. It already starts with very questionable scenario, that doesn't get treatment it deserved. it just was never confronted in a way that I wish is was at the start, but at the end they kind of make up for it. Kind of. Besides the main girl, it is assumed that all the girls are certain type, and maybe this can be ignored since its teenage boys making this assumptions, but I still remember being frustrated at some of things said. Though for most part I really enjoyed the manga.
Story: a believable and realistic story that everyone can related to a little, whether its the competitiveness, the forgiveness, the love, etc! I really enjoyed the story! Art: As usual the art was beautiful! And hilarious at the same time, which I love! Characters: this was the best part of this manga. The characters were good strong characters. Midori was a strong and beautiful female character who held her own and who could beat up guys when threatened. But inside she has feelings and love and I truly admired her. Her childhood friend was also complex. He loves Midori but has a hard outer shell, muchlike Midori, so he's deemed not very nice. And the guy who fell in love with Midori was an embarrassed 15 year old boy who was also complex but was bold enough to stand up for the girl he loves.
Enjoyement: Truly loved this manga and its going on my favorites pile! I thought the love was really cute and it had me rooting for both guys, which I kinda hated because my heart was split as to which guy I liked better. In the end I went with the faithful loving guy who was kind from the start. I also enjoyed the humor in it because it just made me laugh out loud and I truly enjoyed it!
And so overall a well deserved 10! It wasn't like an shoujo manga where the girl can't stand up for herself and the guy always came in to the rescue. There was some of that but who doesn't love a bit of heroic male influence in a manga?! The strong characters added to the manga and the good story really helped the manga move a long in a fluent way. The art was beautiful and brilliant and this mangaka was definitely one of my favorites! As was the manga!
One thing is clear, we “can't” immediately judge a manga written in the 2000s, after all, especially in Japan, their thoughts are very different from today's, but even so, you can still enjoy the story a lot. Well, the first things that interested me right away were the following: -The personality of the protagonist, she is still a crybaby and a bit silly girl, but just because she is not a shy and embarrassed girl is already of interest to me. - Boy's costume, I don't know what my attachment is to this silly detail, maybe it's nostalgia for films from the 2000s that use this a lot. -Every woman's dream, a man who makes you smile while others make you cry.
Good, but there are also definitely negative points, which weren't relevant enough to ruin my experience but may have ruined others':
- Strange “nudity”, when I started reading the manga I felt a little uncomfortable with the number of times the protagonist appeared without clothes, I didn't feel it was really necessary to demonstrate her laid-back personality, despite the story having moments of sex.
- Problematic ML, returning to the subject, it must be understood that the manga was written in other times with other thoughts, but it can discourage many people from continuing to read. Hino is an asshole, from his first scene, the justification for that horrible act was how he felt bad about seeing her happy while he was mistreated, and so, he decided to “dirty her”. Terrible, and often makes you think about how that relationship could be an example of something abusive.
- Sudden change at the end, I must admit that I wanted Midori to stay with Kazuma from the beginning, but this happening out of nowhere near the end left me a little disconcerted. I wondered if this change was planned.
I had fun reading this manga, despite the absurd moments that happen. I'm still in shock and confused that she ended up with Kazuma at the end of it all, it was definitely what I wanted, but I didn't expect it to be so sudden. But let's face it, Kazuma really is every girl's dream, he may not be the best on the football team, or the prettiest boy in school, but he was there to make her smile while Hino made her cry. In many moments it is frustrating that she prefers a man who used her body out of pure evil rather than a man who protects her.
