Reviews for Scumbag Loser
Back to Manga**I have already finished reading this manga** First off, if you are just looking for a happy-go-around romance/slice of life manga, stay the fuck away from this one. Saiteihen no Otoko is noticeably different from the majority of other manga because it actually tries* to be a true horror story, with very messed up contents that might just appeal to horror thriller fans. This is quite rarely seen in the medium of manga and anime. For something that is only 3 volumes long, there are a tons of narrative contents told. The pages are filled with twists and turns, leaving readers on the edge of their seats. The manga never loses its intensity, though there is a clear departure of tone in the second half of story, opting for a less scary but more “shounen” tone. Compared to numerous other mystery manga that I have read (with shitty ending), it actually gives a great finish. Not masterpiece, mind, but quite good. At least I found it satisfying.
Being a psychological horror story, there is a heavy focus on MC’s (unstable) state of mind. The MC's 'loser' characteristic is vastly exaggerated. Still, it’s entertaining (in a shounen way) to see how even a person who resides at the bottom of social hierarchy can exhibit moments of heroism, at crucial moments.
The art is hit or miss, depending on whether you like drawings of messed-up faces in this mangaka's unique style. Regardless of your preference, the artwork contributes to the horror suspense atmosphere perfectly.
tl;dr
Overall, for its on a whole satisfying story, unique art style, and an interesting MC loser-kun, I award it with 8/10.
For ultimate recommendation, I point you to Ibitsu, also a short horror story.
Heavy Spoilers: - - - Saitehen no Otoko a.k.a as Scumbag Loser is a classic example of a story that had potential to be very good, but unfortunately it never was able to maximize that potential due to various flaws. Plot: Saiteihen no Otoko starts off very mysterious, its premise is interesting and original. The story starts with our main character Murai Masahiko, Masahiko has the strange ability to notice odours and smells of various people. One day a girl he knew as kid transfers to his school, however her scent isn't the same. Masahiko feeling suspicious decides to question this girl(Haruka) and is able to successfully identify her as a "pretender", though unlike your typical Mary Sue protagonist he agrees to be quiet as long as she pretends to be his girlfriend
After some days Masahiko notices that fellow classmates slowly are starting to change, unfortunately for Masahiko he can't prove anything even if his intuition tells him something is wrong.
Sound interesting right? Well it isn't but I'll get to that later.
Art:
The art is bearable to say the least. The major problem with the art that it's full of inconsistencies, sometimes it's very detailed and other times it feels flat out lazy and unpolished.
Thus in conclusion the art was never really able to maximise the atmosphere, or to build tension.
Character
Just Plain Horrible. Throughout the story the MC(Masahiko) is portrayed in a negative light, he has his creepy obsessions, his creepy fetishes but he isn't a bad character at the start, he's just a character you’re not supposed to feel sympathy for. This is all good until halfway when the author tries to take a 360 turn and decides to portray in a positive light. Masahiko was from very early on shown as a scumbag, but suddenly the author decides to say Fuck it all and tries to convince the audience that he had his "reasons" to act in such a manner and tries to make the reader sympathize with his struggles but it just doesn’t work.
Another thing that I disliked was the development of Haruka,in the first few chapters the interaction between Haruka and Masahiko was very exciting and entertaining, Haruka would drop subtle threats and would install fear upon the vulnerable Masahiko, she'd go as far to "transform" the only person Masahiko liked into another monster/demon. Frustratingly enough at the end guess what she did all those horrible things because she loved him. Yes dear readers if you love someone you have to ruin their lives, stalk them and treat them like livestock because that's love apparently.
Lastly and most annoyingly the author kept on introducing characters that really didn't matter to plot progression, maybe Saitehen no Otoko would have been better if the author dedicated his time to develop the two protagonists.
Conclusion
Though it started off with a lot of potential due to bad execution and horrible character development Saitehen no Otoko never really went anywhere, and in a sense it's a shame because the premise was an original one
I enjoyed the first few chapters when I thought it was going to take a "psychological thriller/horror" pathway, but after chapter 7-8 it just falls in quality and plot and thus not worth bothering to waste your time.
Final Rating
Story: 4/10
Art: 5/10
Character: 3/10
Enjoyment: 4/10
Overall: 4/10
I found this manga unique and enjoyable and I believe it deserves more recognition. The plot hooked me in from the beginning and kept me on the edge of my seat until the very last page. The manga does an excellent job of being super creepy and suspenseful. It's about a guy who comes into contact with a girl who is supposed to be dead. The protagonist is an intriguing person. If you enjoy stories where the main character isn't a good person, I'd highly recommend this. He's a loser who constantly looks down on other people in a desperate attempt to feel better about himself. He says and does many despicable things and is heavily flawed but he still retains a human element that I could identify with. He wants to feel loved and accepted by the people around him. A person's value and love is one of the main themes of the story. It also questions if it is acceptable to change people if they don't match our ideal.
At the time of writing this review (which I don't do that many of unless the work holds a special place in my heart), I have just finished Saiteihen no Otoko (Scumbag Loser), a manga that will stick with me until the end of time. Story: When I first heard about this manga, I was pretty interested in the story, so I read the first chapter (after finishing the School Days manga), and from that point on, I was hooked, and all the plot twists and turns made for a great story, so for Story, I give it a 10/10. Art: Theart is something that definitely made it different from the other manga that I have read. I was surprised to find out that it was a Shōnen manga, because of its Seinen-esque art style, plus the graphic violence made for an even better portrayal of the story. For Art, I give a solid 10.
Character:
For it being only 3 volumes and 15 chapters, Saiteihen no Otoko seems like it wouldn't have much character development, right? WRONG. Through all 15 chapters, you question yourself, asking who do you really support? So for Character, a 10/10.
Enjoyment:
If you think you're going to enjoy reading this because you think it's a Slice of Life/Romance/Comedy manga, you will want to back the fuck away from this manga now, because if you're not used to such a dark and gritty story (especially with the art style), you will have nightmares about this manga. That being said, for Enjoyment, I give it a 10/10.
Overall:
I have immensely enjoyed this view into the darker, more graphic side of manga, reading it only in 1-2 hours. I'd definitely recommend this manga to anyone who loves the Psychological Horror genre, and can handle the blood and gore that's in this manga.
This is just bad and, after the first act set in the school, incredibly boring. I wanted to enjoy this as it seemed like a weird, dark manga (which I do really enjoy), but God this is bad. And so boring. MC is first presented as a unlikable character, which I can enjoy if done well, but that changes when we are supposed to feel bad for him in the final act, though I just didn't care because he was such a horrible person. There was a lot of lazy writing or plots set up that could've been slightly interesting (for this manga) that were thengiven up on with a 'just kidding' or 'i lied'.
The BORING AS HELL final fight was even given up on with some characters just saying 'I'm done for today' and pissing off, which just made me feel the writer didn't care enough to finish the fight in a half decent way.
I also want to mention:
->His parents, and other characters', shit actions DO NOT excuse his shit actions.
(Spoilers for this paragraph?) There was a creepy romance with a dead girl which the MC obsesses over but by the end we're supposed to support this because the poor MC 'was never loved by his horrible parents'. NO. That's not how sympathy works- it's still a creepy romance no matter his parents relationship with him.
He didn't learn from what happened to Haruka in elementary school, which was a result of his actions, as he continues to obsess over her. Why are we supposed to feel bad for him? He is an awful person, and the author trying to make him more likeable at the end of the manga only adds to my dislike of the MC.
The MC develops these powers half way through which gave me a rip-off and dull version of Kaneki Ken from Tokyo Ghoul when he uses his ghoul powers.
This manga does nothing unique or truly disturbing. It's mostly full of cheap shocks that don't challenge the reader.
I just found myself feeling detached from all of the events in the plot and the "struggles" of the MC. By making him unlikable for the first half, I didn't care for him at all by the end and actually ended up disliking him even more when I was instead supposed to be feeling bad for him. The plot, while in the first act, was bearable, it felt very stretched out and convoluted in the second act and I just found myself caring less and less with every page. I eventually started skimming over each page, willing for the manga to just end already.
I think if it had ended after the first act, I would've rated this manga slightly higher (probably a 5). The second half is what really let it down.
In case you couldn't tell, I don't recommend this unless you want to cringe and/or rage at this story that might've had a tiny bit of potential to be, at least, fun, but ended up being drawn out and boring.
There are multiple series that acheive aspects of this manga far better:
- Supernatural Invasion and the affects of society- Parasyte
- Uncomfortable sexual situations, along with the pressure and shame surrounding it- Aku No Hana
- Inner struggle of becoming part of the monster you detest- Tokyo Ghoul
- And just well done, terrifying horror with chilling art to accompany it - anything by Junji Ito
I urge you to read/watch any of these rather than this
...I fucking hate this manga. This isn't some kind of structured review or whatever. This is a somewhat sporadic stream of consciousness of someone who just finished reading this manga last night and regrets ever thinking that Mikoto Yamaguchi could possibly create a manga that isn't hot garbage. This manga opens up with grabbing the viewer with a strong sense of disgust. The main character, Murai, at the start is a revolting little cunt who has been sniffing a dead girl's panties every day for FIVE FUCKING YEARS. And you know that? Yeah I'm down with that. I'm down with having a story where the main characteris just a loathsome little shit who constantly tries to assert that he's better than everyone. And then the story then tries to paint him in a sympathetic light by exploring his abusive upbringing, and while that definitely could work in a story by a non-hack writer who doesn't rely on cheap gross outs to keep reader attention, the MC's development is just so fucking all over the place. There's a moment halfway through where the MC shows some genuinely redeeming qualities when he risks his life to stop the skin-walkers (they're never named in the actual story so I'm calling them skin-walkers), but then the story practically turns to the audience and says "lol no there's nothing even remotely respectable about this dude" and THEN it turns around and presents him in a tragic light or something? It's so fucking bizarre. Is the MC supposed to be an unlikely hero where he rises to the occasion despite being a gross incel? Is he supposed to be a total villain protagonist who we're supposed to hate? An anti-hero? He has development I think, but I couldn't tell you what his whole character arc is supposed to be.
Other than him, there's not really any other character who's worth talking about other than the femc. For almost the entire story, the narrative plays her up as the biggest piece of shit you can think of, but then at the LAST second it tries to do some "I actually loved you the whole time" thing. And sure you can give your main antagonist redeeming qualities at the end like that, but this whole moment feels so unearned. This ENTIRE aspect of her character comes out of nowhere to play into this really, really heavy-handed social commentary about love or whatever that they spent the last volume going on about.
As for the story, the story starts as some mystery where the MC suddenly gets a bizarre girlfriend who's implied to be a nonhuman skinwalker that eats people and she's manipulating him to give her easy prey. All the while there's this really, really tone-deaf social commentary about losers and love (I will get to this) which just makes this whole segment a slog to get through. And then at the end of the first volume it turns into Tokyo Ghoul from the POV of a lone wolf ghoul inspector who happens to be a fat incel with a baseball bat going on the run. And like holy shit for a solid 4-ish chapters this manga was actually kinda awesome just because of how batshit insane that concept is. It's like the manga rewards you for sticking through the bad social commentary. But then in the last few chapters the story pivots hard back into that and turns into some lecture about losers and love and then you feel stupid for ever getting mildly invested in the story whatsoever.
And speaking of the Tokyo Ghoul comparisons, the last scene of the manga is taken DIRECTLY out of Tokyo Ghoul. That is not me exaggerating or whatever. The sheer audacity of Mikoto Yamaguchi ape the LITERAL CLIMAX of his story from another, better manga is fucking insane to me. And before someone goes "um ackshully this is just two different authors coming up with similar scenes by accident" yeah no fuck off with that shit. Putting aside the whole actual, straight up people eaters disguising in human society, Murai literally has one darkened eye from his partial transformation. The scene with him and Haruka at the end is ripped straight from Kaneki and Rize. You truly cannot make this shit up. Mikoto Yamaguchi is a hack. This wasn't a satire or anything either because the story CLEARLY wanted you to take the scene and the events leading up to it seriously.
You might read all of that and go "okay so this guy thinks this manga sucks but why does he hate it this much?" And to that I'd say that it's because this manga tries to have a message, and said message is both poorly delivered and honestly somewhat toxic in its contents. So the main character starts the story as a gross pervert who puts himself above other people by dismissing them as "losers who no one cares about," which by contrast elevates himself in his own mind by sheer virtue of being "better" than others. And obviously that's a toxic mindset, and the story treats it as such. But the narrative's answer to Murai's ideology is that "even losers have people who care about them." But the thing is, the actual underlying axiom of Murai's mindset, that people's value is determined by other people caring about them, is never actually subverted. From the manga's perspective, the people at the bottom of the "social hierarchy" ARE losers. Yamada, whose worst crime is being fat and smelly, is viewed under the same lens as Murai's LITERAL PEDOPHILE MURDERER father. This isn't just supposed to be a sign of Murai's own distorted view on reality or whatever. The last few chapters of the story are just heavy handed exposition dumps on how some people are gross disgusting losers, but even they deserve love or whatever. This manga, like, bases its worldview on ugly bastard ntr rape hentai videos (and given the stuff Mikoto Yamaguchi comes out with I am fairly confident that this is an apt description), asserts that people who aren't in line with social norms are more or less the same as those ugly bastard rapist characters, and then asserts that "no actually those ugly bastards still have people who care about them!" This manga's message is just so fucking insane. The manga's message seems to be that "all human life has intrinsic value" but the framework it uses to convey that message is bafflingly based on rape fetish porn. I deadass don't even know what to say to that.
The art is good I guess. The skin walkers had some creepy faces which I liked. The story was clearly TRYING to gross me out so I guess it did a good job I guess.
tl;dr:
Mikoto Yamaguchi is a hack. I hate everything this man has made. I hate how fucking entertaining his dogshit is. I hate that I love shitting on his slop so much. This manga sucks ass.
Giving this shit a 3/10 because this shit sucks ass but there was a span of like two-three chapters which were actually decent and then it went right back to being shit.
The narrative is like Invasion of the Body Snatchers meets your typical edgy high school manga. Scumbag Loser follows a high school kid that is almost at the bottom of the male hierarchy and discovers a way to boost his status by lying about getting a girlfriend with photoshopped images of his deceased childhood best friend—who happens to transfer to his school the following day. To be real, this manga has an original premise but falls completely flat trying to tell it. The main issue for me is that this manga suffers from going too big and beyond when it should have only been focusedon Masahiko and Haruka’s power struggle while discovering Masahiko’s dark family secret. Instead, we have plot points explained to us rather than unfolding and the main protagonist that goes into a coma for a month which is a narrative red flag for laziness. Masahiko’s development as a character goes from unlikeable to heroic with little-to-no development in between.
I’d say the first 6 chapters are maybe worth reading if you are curious, but I’d do yourself a favor and read something else.
English version: How to use words to describe this story? I tried the free sample chapter 1 of Scumbag Loser, which MAL provided. And the story is basically really revolting, even though it's only chapter 1. There are a lot of disgusting details and fetishes, and it can easily make the reader taste disgusting things just by looking at the images and reading the words. It's really gaggable or barfable, since a lot of the actions are all perverted. I'm not even sure why the story is published. If you value your sanity and don't want to be perceived as a weirdo, stay away from thisstory as far as possible.
this was absolutely terrible. shame, because the premise is intresting, but thats about all it had going for it. art its the bare minimum really, its a very generic anime art style trying to be creepy, which means it just loops back round to being funny because the horror looks so forced. theres pretty bad same face syndrome too. all the fat guys have the same face shape, all the cute girls, etc. i'd be happy enough to overlook this if the writing was good, but alas. also, this felt like a massive case of the author's poorly disgusised fetish, lots of foot licking and the characters gettingaroused at real bad stinks and that. surprised there wasnt fart sniffing in here. that brings to the sexualisation. its rampant, the whole manga has a latent horniness that just really doesn't fit - the main guy getting boners at stinky people is like. gross but whatever i can see how the author thought that'd fit with the story and his personality. but the way all the women are drawn with their tits being emphasised, and the amount of gratious nudity that is just jarring when put next to the plot. also like half of them are teenagers too like c'mon dude. like there is a lot of nudity in this story for some reason - i'm not the kind of person that thinks books should have only plot relevant nudity, but here it just distracted from everything and felt like the writer was drawing one-handed.
plot & writing
it starts off alright, again the premise and initial idea is really intresting, but it fails to execute. the 1st half was for sure better, it just focused on the two protaganists and the fucked up situtation. what bugged me really was the charactarsation, or like, how shoehorned the themes/ideas were. the protag is an incel, but hes written so cartonnishly evil its hard to take him seriously. everyone speaks like really overblown cartoon characters, but the tone of the art indicates it wants to take itself seriously. as a comparasion, i watched the horror movie jennifers body last night - thats got wacky as hell dialogoue, but its aware of how camp it is and takes itself as seriously as it needs to, which meant i could actually be invested in the movie and a) enjoy it b) engage with the themes/what its trying to say (female friendship, rape revenge, etc). also halfway through he starts acting like a hero like what. it felt completely out of nowehere. right at the end he does a ken kaneki thing where he turns part demon and gets a black eye and starts needing human flesh 😭😭😭 like huh??? 😭
it also tries to do romance in here and it felt like it came out of nowhere. as an aside, it felt very stiff/awkward whenever they said something like so and so is the biggest loser, im thinking something got lost in translation? because its really unnatural sounding dialogoue and everyone speaks like in the story.
theres also the story trying to convince you that he was a good person along, despite him obbssessing over a dead child and sniffing her? panties (or atleast, using someones else pants in her place) repeatedly throughout the story. like hes a piece of shit, and the story is too afraid to actually have that for a main character.
don't read it unless you paid a fiver for it like i did, and even then just read anything else thats good
if you want a died and came back wrong story just read the night hikaru died, it has a coherent plot, good pacing, and actually well written characters.
I finished the manga and honestly it is a amazing description of how people can be shitty; But I mean it shows our humanity; How shitty can someone be to survive, how does mental illness develop in a shitty household. How can people be blind to the past, how can bullying and trauma create inferiority complex's. I mean honestly this is an amazing manga and it will leave you with a gutwrenching heartache feeling, finished reading this in one day and by the end of it I was out of breathe in tears... Honestly an amazing manga for anyone that IS human, we all areshitty to some degree, this shows how the MC survived in a shitty world.
tl;dr: A bit of an interesting take on the theme of unconditional love, but beyond that it’s either generic psychological horror or uninteresting nonsense. This manga is a three-volume length psychological thriller centered around supernatural beings that are killing and replacing people. It is from the point of view of Masahiko, a high school boy that one of said beings, Haruka, seems to grow fond of. Masahiko has always been near the bottom rung of the school hierarchy, and thus has come to be someone that’s very good at sniffing out the biggest losers through scent alone. The mysterious beings that are killing and replacing peopleare primarily after such losers, and thus Masahiko is given the job of selecting targets.
Through this set up it touches on various themes. The main one starting out is everyone’s obsession with social hierarchies. It doesn’t delve that much into it, basically showing off an example that’s supposed to be disturbing to try to convey how awful things can get, but to be honest it wasn’t all that bad relatively speaking and didn’t leave that much of an impression. As the series progressed it also touched upon the more interesting theme of how people don’t really view the inside of someone as who there are, wherein even if someone’s personality changes completely as long as they look the same and seem to be fitting into the same slot in society, they’ll be viewed as exactly the same person.
That in and of itself isn’t that interesting because it’s relying entirely on the supernatural aspect in order to work and thus doesn’t say much about real life, however tangentially it did bring up quite often the much more interesting point about the hollowness of unconditional love. In a conditional relationship, or at least a healthy one, those involved are in love with each other for who they are and want to be loved in a similar vein. There obviously will be things that one might wish were different about one’s partner, but in general one wouldn’t want them to change completely because they’re in love with them in the condition that they currently exist in and thus it is likely love would wane if said partner changes too much. On the other hand, unconditional love doesn’t really have any sort of foundation to it. There’s no real reason for it to exist, but it still has to exist. Thus, a parent will love their child regardless of how much they change over the course of their life. That’s generally a touching sentiment, but on the other hand it’s also not at all. The love isn’t of the person themselves but rather simple of the role they’re inhabiting, and thus they’d be perfectly fine with anyone else in that role. Rather, it would be perfectly reasonable to wish that the one fulfilling that role was essentially someone completely different. While this isn’t really anything more than stating the obvious I suppose, actually thinking about it somewhat depressing.
The plot was incredibly lacking. The first half is fine. It’s pretty typical psychological horror with inexplicable changes and the feeling of helplessness and solitude in the face of the mysterious that proceed in a pretty generic manner. It’s not all that unique, but it isn’t bad either, so it’s decent enough. The second half is where things go off the rails. It drops most of the psychological horror in favor of more in your face scares but isn’t all that good at it thus just isn’t scary at all, nor is there much in terms of good suspense. It begins focusing much more on two new characters, but in the end there was no thematic or plot purpose to either of them. This is the type of story where all the main characters are horrible and unlikable, which isn’t all that rare for psychological horror, but towards the end it felt like it was trying for beats that actually relied on having some investment in the main character and his struggles, but that just didn’t land at all considering it’s not like he went through any sort of character arc or anything like that. On top of that, the pacing is pretty bad with it wasting a bunch of time on the aforementioned pointless characters and then rushing a bunch during the ending. This results in a bunch of plot holes, some minor such as why a character looked like what they did, and some major, like characters seemingly knowingly allowing themselves to be killed off for no real reason.
The art was solid enough quality. Style wise it could be good at times, meaning both in terms of looking nice and in terms of looking horrific, wherein the looking nice aspect is important for helping the horrific parts stand out. However, most of the time it wasn’t either, it was just kind of meh in a way that didn’t enhance the tone or atmosphere at all, and design wise it was pretty dull in general.
This story is short but sweet. Over 15 chapters you have a pretty fleshed out story, it doesn't feel rushed at all. Scumbag loser is an exploration into "dealing with scumbag" mentality in our society. If they do not contribute to society and no one needs them wouldn't it be better just to replace a better copy of themselves? The story takes a sci-fiesque approach where someone is making it so perfect inhuman copies are replacing the former scumbags. From the POV of the protagonist, who himself is a scumbag, is exploited into find these scumbags these people. Will he be replaced first or continueto do these strange people's bidding? Who even are these people?
Read on.
From the beginning to about halfway through, it seems very promising and is not predictable at all, although it is somewhat unusual in how it portrays bullying. It makes you want to keep reading to see what might happen throughout the manga, but from the middle onwards, very strange things happen and it ends in a disappointing way. The artwork was not the most impressive, the story was promising but then left something to be desired, and the characters are very underdeveloped, and the protagonist is quite peculiar, not to say very strange. I give it a 6 because the first half had potential, butI wouldn't recommend it.
