Reviews for Avant-garde Yumeko
Back to MangaI actually only read Avant garde Yumeko because I have a fascination for the Mangaka Oshimi Shuzo. Since that Manga is only a One-Shot and separated in less than 10 chapters, I didnt really expected that much anyway. The Story is about a Girl named Yumeko, who experienced a strange interest in cocks. She can't barely handle it and is getting more and more curious about what a cock actually looks like. (Seems like there is no Internet at that time) . After hopeless tries in getting in touch with some "material" to look she gets the clue about joining the art Club to get anude sketch to fullfill her desperation. This is the moment where the secondary Protagonist appears, Honda. She is forcing him to become her nude model.
This pretty much summarizes the plot in short. I can barely say much more, even the end is kinda fast paced and very open. I dont really got that feel of a finished work though.
The Art is very..very mediocore, and im pretty sure its one of the first works of the mangaka. Thats why you cant expect much more than a Doujinshi-Art Level. Anyway I was pretty confident with the expressions of the characters. The proportions, backgrounds and panels are on a lower Level.
For a short manga in a pevert gag-setting the Characters are also very flat. Yumeko's strange nature and curiosity about cocks makes her funny to follow through the whole Story. Especially the authors note in the end expresses the way you should handle the manga.
Honda is a standard, shy Highschooler who makes his first experiences with a Girl (thats why he can barely handle her behaviours). Together they make out a pretty cute "couple" and I liked to see how the Story between them went out.
The Enjoyment-Level is on a good base, since I like the way the mangaka tells the Story. Since the manga is als pretty nude in several ways (even though the "Special parts" are censored) it was enjoyable the way its made up.
Overall I can say, if you are interested in the mangaka its pretty much worth a look. Its barely an hour of reading, and I love too how the mangaka developed over all the years in his art-Level and Story-telling.
Yet I dont think you will enjoy it very much if you randomly picked up the manga. You should really dont set any higher Standards.
Avant-garde Yumeko is about a teenage girl who uses her art to manifest a growing interest in the male body and sex. Whenever she thinks of or sees a dick, she gets the urge to draw! And her work is quite impressive. This concept could easily be turned into a hentai. Knowing this medium, it probably already has. Oshimi Shuzo is more concerned about the importance of art in the hands of someone who needs a way to channel their curiosity in a private and productive activity. Needless to say, sex is a really hard thing for teenagers (and even adults) to talk about openly -many never have any sort of education or "talk" from their parents to prepare them for what their bodies are designed to do. This manga presents a constructive solution to that curiosity that I found to be quite endearing and funny. It's probably relevant that Japan's obscenity laws prohibit depictions of genitals in their media, further limiting the agency of a teenager to learn about sex through the media they consume. Yumeko then has to satiate her curiosity through her own imagination, and with the help of a willing male club member.
That said, there are a lot of drawn dicks in this manga. So I can imagine readers being too grossed out to even care about what themes are being conveyed. It doesn't help that this is an early Shuzo work before his art style became more refined as it is now, making it a bit harder to take seriously and to identify what the point of the story is.
Personally, it didn't bother me enough to take away from the enjoyment of the manga. and I find this to be a good precursor to later works with similar tropes that you may recognize as a fan.
An exploration of the importance of art disguised as a silly ecchi manga. This is an early work by Oshimi Shuuzo of Aku no Hana fame, and it contains many of the themes and tropes (and even a character design) that continue to pop up in his manga to this day, i.e. obsession with art or a particular artist; an unhinged but attractive female corrupting a quiet, socially awkward male; perversion of all kinds; etc. Avant-garde Yumeko isn't a good starting point for those new to this mangaka; it's too shallow and goofy to be representative of his more well known work, but it's an interestingread for fans looking to see how his style has developed and evolved over the years. There's also dicks and boobs! Yay!
Hello! Okay, I don't understand much of what I just read, I just think I'll never understand artists... or art... or teenagers. But to be fair the author ended up making a slightly perverted and stupid manga about penises and self-discovery... in that order and maybe about how art really is a pure expression of the individual and how the sexual arousal of certain individuals can be REALLY weird, even for themselves and looking for the least thoughtful way to explore that issue. I wouldn't recommend it unless you really want a light, weird, fun read; and find nothing else.
" The source of my self-expression is a sexual urge, libido, thus turning my libido into something abstract is art. " Maybe that's just the best sentence which you can find in the whole manga, the whole story is just as that, however I would like to point out a few plot holes that is pretty funny if you think about it;it seems as if there is nothing named as internet in the manga because then the girl could have easily got what she wanted, another case is there was an easier way she could have just gone to a sex toy shop or again could order online, but thesedidn't happen because then the dear mangaka couldn't have expressed what he wanted.
With all of this, there is an interesting point that the character wants to get to what true passion lies in thus she doesn't mind crossing some lines ,which shows how powerful passion can be.
Not wanting to spoil,in a point in story the male character expresses an simple, yet effective sentence; I am a guy!,the girl character throwing away basic needs and dedicating herself to the whole purpose of art ,gets misleaded in the way, implying that one shouldn't forget the basics.
After all of this, this isn't a bad manga but not a good one either.its NOT a must read ,so if you have the time read it (takes an hour)if you don't then simply don't!
Thanks for reading, hope you all embrace the moment.
I would describe myself as an "art manga aficionado". I'm an artist, art is 100% of my life. A lot of themes in this manga, I can really connect with on a personal level because of that-- curiosity, passion, excitement, confusion, coming of age, loneliness, using art as a means of exploration and expression, all that good stuff. And I do think that there's nuggets of good stuff in here. However, I do mostly just find this manga to be disgusting on many different levels. Whenever I see mangaka put their FIFTEEN YEAR OLD characters in situations like these, I just wonder, how much wouldit hurt to make these characters be a more appropriate age? This whole manga is about children being put in sexual scenarios. I find it so disgusting and sometimes even fetishistic. I don't understand why any human being would want to buy this and have it on their shelf.
I tried to imagine an alternate version of this manga where Yumeko is a woman in college, in her 20s. Maybe she's never really felt passionate about anything and is going to school for something she doesn't care about, and she'd never struck an interest in men or their bodies before because she'd always been to busy with her studies & uninterested. But maybe she watches a movie that features people in the nude and that's how she strikes an interest in male bodies, leaving her down the same path as Yumeko in this manga, but with one of her awkward college classmates, instead of a random art club member that she blackmails (which is also disgusting). I think that the story would not only be about the same, but would also be leagues less disgusting to read, on top of having a message of, "Its never too late to switch paths once you discover something you're actually passionate about"-- in Yumeko's case, art.
In conclusion: read Blue Period by Tsubasa Yamaguchi instead if you want to learn about someone become impassioned about art as they come of age.
Or Nude Model by Tsubasa Yamaguchi if you want a story with slightly similar themes but completely different (and, in my opinion, a far more appropriate) execution.
(Check my profile for a link to my personal site containing more up-to-date reviews and bonus media!) Written on June 30, 2018 11:46 pm EST Avant-Garde Yumeko is certainly funny, but as expected, Oshimi manages to make his premise into a statement rather than a comedic feast of awkwardness. Whether you want the silly concept to deliver on laughs or you’re looking for Oshimi’s sexual psychology you should be satisfied, and either way the investment is low at a single volume. The return fit my expectations more than, say, Sweet Poolside did. This hits much of the same notes with its cute coming-of-age romance plot, but thesexual tension behind everything feels much more present and thus gives deeper depths to the characters and themes.
Which isn’t to say Avant-Garde Yumeko isn’t simple—it definitely is—but more importantly, its simple message and character motivations have heart and sincerity to them. This story, while seemingly absurd, may resonate a lot with anyone who remembers their awkward, difficult, restrained adolescent period or those who are going through it right this moment. The framework of a girl obsessed with drawing penises may obfuscate this for some, but look at the details behind it all such as the shame, not understanding unfamiliar bodily urges, and denying your own sexuality, and you’re almost certain to find emotions you’ve been through before yourself.
This is what makes Oshimi at his best so brilliant. He looks at these situations with a sense of humor that the hindsight of an adult gives him, looking back as to how convoluted we make sex as young adults, but at the same time he doesn’t deny the actual importance and relevance these extreme reactions have on adolescents and shaping them into adults.
If Yumeko’s phallic-obsessed personality seems too basic and flat, there’s a reason for all that. This is the phase before someone becomes interesting, when their natural desires lead them to places they never imagined, discovering new ideas behind the thick fog of pubescence. Yumeko and her friend begin to become full people only after this manga is over, and that’s how you know Oshimi is still attuned to the days of his youth.
Addendum: As of writing this, I cannot find the one-shot Superfly anywhere on the internet in English. If you’re reading this and have found it, please let me know. I would love to read it.
Observe... it's ART! or so Yumeko thinks. Hahaha sometimes I think Oshimi trolls us and just uses the short sleeves as a trash can for crazy ideas that he comes up with or does when he's bored. It is a story ... weird, nothing out of the ordinary or strange for me but a bit comical and forcibly sexualized. All this reminded me of the typical friend who is always drawing penises in the notebook, is it normal? Yes. In the end this was a story of self-exploration that led Yumeko to a bigger goal, she liked the drawing and hopefully she has stayed with her partner at theclub for longer.
reading this one-shot was a MISTAKE. i personally came across this series while scrolling through amazon, and the cover art got me intrigued, mostly because of the phallic imagery, which by itself is of course a little questionable but since it's by the same author as Aku No Hana, i figured, why not give it a shot. after all, shuzo oshimi wrote the perversion theme in aku no hana really well, so i had faith. i lost it all. Yumeko, the MC, is a perverted girl who's OBESSESSED with dicks. there's not much else to her character other than, - dick - thinking about dick - wanting to draw dick - beingmad when she can't draw dick
there's genuinely not much else to her.
Honda, the other MC, ha that typical looking loser design that you see a lot of "perverted" characters have (if you take a look at a panel of him, you'll get what i mean.) and i honestly don't even know why i'm droning on about his design, as it's the least of my concerns. he's honestly just an art student, who gets roped into yumeko's crazy ass obsession with dicks.
i doubt that this one-shot had much potential anyway, but the development is just not it. it's quite lazy, repeating the same scenario over and over, just yumeko being a penis-obsessed girl, as honda awkwardly poses as her nude model. that's not to say that nothing happens, but it doesn't create much excitement.
he then (as you'd expect as it drags on) gets boners whenever he poses nude. yumeko, despite her obsession, actually comments on it LESS than honda does, which is weird in hindsight, because she finally gets to see a dick, but honda gets most of the dialogue whenever he's in the scene.
and don't even get me started on that ending.
to cut things short, honda's embarrassment leads him to blurting out that yumeko needs to pose nude for him, or else he won't pose nude for her anymore. she does, because she needs that 9 to 5 dick on hand. however, she's obviously embarrassed too, and honda feels bad, blahblablah, they stop talking for like a month. yumeko can't help but feel like something is missing (it's dick,), and so she goes into the art room and goes "SEX NOW!!!"
WHAT THE FUCK????????
AND THEY ACTUALLY DO???
this development makes no sense. these characters had little to no chemistry, the only interactions they'd ever have were because of yumeko's dick fever. that shit was borderline hentai.
they just smear paint over each other's bodies and fuck.
what comes out of this?
honda wants the be yumeko's canvas for life. weird
yumeko wants to go to art college as a result. weirder.
in all fairness, the art college thing was referenced earlier on, but it's still an unsatisfactory ending (if there could even be one of those.)
this is also one of oshimi's earlier works, so i implore you to go and read Aku no Hana as well as Chi no Wadachi, which are amazing.
this one shot is not an accurate window into oshimi's writing. if you're looking for a crack story that takes itself semi-seriously at times, then for sure, indulge yourelf, but most audiences wouldn't like this story.
After I was reading about Sweet Poolside, I continue to reading about Oshimi's first phase of production. Once again I find myself faced with a comedy manga filled with highly erotic scenes from very young boys. And once again it is the girl who leads the boy to physical contact and very intimate situations Oshimi brings a bizarre story to an art club of a first sexual relationship between two young people, without inserting feelings into the mix. Honda is a simple boy who wants to lose his virginity and finding himself naked so many times in front of a beautiful girl like Yumeko and evenstimulated by her touch with the brush, it becomes easy to understand his struggle to contain himself.
Yumeko with "innocent curiosity" develops an obsession that takes her a little out of reality. He never realizes Honda's difficulty in enduring all this stimulation without getting to the point. I found the happy ending with the fuck gratifying for poor Honda.
Finally, Yumeko, beyond her passion for the penis, has mapped out a future working career.
One day Yumeko started having a obsession with wanting to see a penis. He starts imagining it everywhere, but not because he wants to have sex with it, but more out of curiosity. He finds an opportunity in the art club and asking its only member, Honda, to pose nude.
Honda accepts and Yumeko continues to threaten him. If Honda doesn't pose naked for her, Yumeko leaves the art club.
Yumeko takes Honda inside her house, to prevent anyone from seeing anything at school, and makes him pose naked. Honda gets caught up in sexual instinct and touches Yumeko, the girl gets angry and kicks him out of the house.
The instinct becomes understandable as Yumeko stimulated Honda's penis with a few strokes.
Honda threatens to never pose naked again if Yumeko doesn't strip for him for a drawing. Yumeko accepts and poses naked for a sketch.
Honda has exceeded all limits of tolerance and wants Yumeko's body.
The girl finally realizes that she wants to have sex and the two fuck at school.
Yumeko finally realizes that she wants to pursue a real career as an artist and go to art school.
