Reviews for xxxHOLiC Rei
Back to MangaxxxHOLiC: Rei is a very... interesting yet mean read. After coming hot off the heels that was xxxHOLic's over depressing and rushed ending you would hope this new continuation would try to maybe rework that ending. It starts with mostly just giving us more stories of the same characters giving a good amount of new stories that come from before a lot of the more interesting character developments from the original xxxHolic which is fine, it's nice to see more stories of our main cast of characters, especially since they also push Watanuki's affection for Yuuko a little more but overall don't add much tothe overarching story. These stories are still very entertaining, still coming hard with interesting story lines and wonderful artwork especially when it comes to Yuuko's outfits and the new monsters Overall the beginning give us more time to appreciate these lovable characters.
We then switch to back to the end of the originals storyline somewhere before the last chapter where we proceed down a new different story where Watanuki is still managing the shop, but his new goal is to get Yuuko back. Since this has not ended no spoilers for now but overall I found this new retelling to be quite engaging and that it doesn't spoil the overall lore of the world too much aka doesn't feel to forced.
Overall I would highly recommend this series for people who are craving more xxxholic material as I feel it does good on just giving us more of these characters, but right now it's on hiatus right when the main storyline started getting very interesting which definitely hurts as a reader, especially when a restart is nowhere in sight. If you are craving more xxxHolic material after the disappointing ending of the original I would definitely say to give this a read because it really is a enjoyable experience that doesn't detract from the original. Just know that by the time you get to the end of Vol 4 you'll be joining me on the train of sadly waiting for a new conclusion to this series, and it especially hurts when the story feels like it was just getting good (in terms of the main story).
xxxHolic, in my opinion, serves as a continuation of the main series, but exactly how well does it do in that regard? For starters, everything about the series is relatively consistent, and it appears that the status quo has been restored since the ending. Allegedly so, anyway. With this brings back a fair amount of the original manga's pluses and negatives: pacing, writing, how much you like the characters, are all hit-or-miss for the most part, and this is large dependent on how you felt towards the main manga as a whole. If you enjoyed the main series, you will likely enjoy Rei. Unfortunately, somemain series characters don't return (at least as impactfully) and the series is unfinished, like Cardcaptor Sakura's Clear Card anime. If you enjoyed the original xxxHolic, you'll likely enjoy this, but otherwise, it doesn't necessarily add anything that hasn't been seen before. 6/10.
