Reviews for Shoulder-a-Coffin Kuro
Back to Manga"My road, my story end here for now. But theirs continues. I don't know where they;re headed bit, I just know they'll find a way. As long as they keep walking, the "path" wil cime into being under their feet" The doctor in Vol.3 ch. ?? After reading this, I'm actually surprised that there's no anime adaptation for this, nor acknowledgment, This story is a 10/10 for me and here are the reasons why Story 10/10 The story is followed from the beginning till the end, despite having some "filler" chapters, they manage to connect it into the main story. Every sub-story has a reason, notbecause the writer ran out of ideas. Everything has a purpose in this story, the meet-ups, the rumors and many more. The story is the right balance of adventure for me, not boring nor exciting, sometimes funny and sometimes tragic. Its the right blend for an adventure centered story. Words cannot describe how amazing the story is, You might say that I'm overreacting but I find a good story If i really read it till the end (idk if that makes sense).
art 10/10
Despite having no realistic illustrations, colorful pages. IT really lets you into the main mood of the story that were not only having a fun-time adventure, not that the story is about having fun. the story has a dark, well "gray" concept (if thats the right words)
Character 10/10
one of the things I like in this Manga, is that everybody has a purpose, everybody has a major role in the story. They Use the character in other chapters because they are also part of the story that makes the "history" of that story. Lets say for example. Chapter ?? volume ?? the story where in a kingdom travelers must tell a tale to satisfy the princess, the people who are the "travelers" is also a fellow traveler that Kuro cross path with in the previous chapter. Every Character is well made to connect to the present chapter, the past stories and the future.
enjoyment 10/10
This is the first manga that excites me every time I wake up there is a voice inside me to read it now instead of doing some chores. that's how I enjoy the Manga and I hope you'll enjoy it as you read it
overall 10/10
ITs the most amazing stories/manga I have ever read im my entire life and I would Love to recommend you this Amazing Masterpiece.
And I hope that this will have an anime adaptation cuz it will be amazing if that happen
So, since this lovely manga doesn ´t have any reviews I will do my best to write one. This manga deserves it. So I will start with the most important question of all: Is this manga worth reading? To which I can only answer:Yes it is, but it's not manga for everybody. While this manga has lovely art style and cute looking characters it´s actually quite dark. It also is kinda hard to describe (at least for me), but I will try my best: Story - It's about a girl carrying a coffin (Kuro) and her bat companion (Sen) who are travelling around in search fora certain witch. Very soon they encounter two catgirls - Nijuku and Sanju who join them on their journey. The story itself is mostly episodic. It's about what they experience on their journey, all the characters they meet and such.
Characters - This is a tough one. I'm not saying that they are unlikable. They are just kind of hard to describe. Especially Kuro herself. Sen likes to drink alcohol and chase pretty women. Nijuku and Sanju are naive and curious, for the most part. Kuro is a bit of a mystery.
Art syle - I loved it (How should you rate an art? Just check it for yourself and see if you like it.)
Enjoyment - I enjoyed it for the most part, though there were times when I had to take break from it for few days, because it was way too dark. Overall I liked it very much. It even had an appropriate ending.
So yeah, I recommend this manga for all those that like dark stories.
Shoulder-A-Coffin Kuro is a manga that is quite underrated. Having heard rave reviews from a fan, I had high hopes reading this, and it delivered. Story: 10/10 Kuro's story is simply beautiful. What might simply be an episodic chapter for one, is a part of a subplot that slowly tells itself over the course of the many chapters. Each chapter on its own is great, with Kuro being changed by and changing the people she meets, through what they say or what they do. Each of these subplots create a beautiful story that is what makes it a masterpiece. Art 10/10: Despite being in 4koma format, Satoko Kiyuzukimanages to make their great artstyle show, with beautiful designs, and this especially shows in the colour pages. The art gives a nice fantasy vibe that is lovely, while the more dark chapters have the appropriate art and framing to bring out the vibe of the chapter.
Character 9/10: The characters are well written, and do grow and change over the course of the story, like Kuro as an example. In addition, we see the characters have their backstories, and how they came to be this way, expanded on throughout the story. The side characters also serve a key role, popping up every now and then, just like how a traveler can meet the same person a few times on their journey.
Enjoyment 10/10: A very fun read, with a lot of well written story, I enjoyed this manga.
Overall 10/10: A must read, especially if you're a Sousou no Frieren fan or Girls Last Tour fan, as these 2 serieses do share similarites with Kuro.
Story: 9/10 Pretty damn good, the anthology type chapters are good and the over-arching plot had me hooked. Many characters turn up in other chapters too so it doesn’t just feel like a bunch of random, unrelated stories. Some chapters were basically filler with no impact on the overarching plot or our understanding of the main characters however. There are fun adventurous chapters as well as some pretty dark and emotional chapters (seriously it gets pretty dark). The mystery of the witch was intriguing. The subplots were brought together masterfully. I liked how Kuro and Sen's backstory was handled, with it being built up over thecourse of the whole manga and with scenes that recontextualise previous chapters.
Art: 10/10
It's a 4koma but the boxes are bigger than normal 4koma manga, so the art doesn’t feel restricted. Frequent wide panels and coloured pages. Great art of the landscapes. The art always fits the tone of the chapter, from fun and whimsical to dark and gritty.
Character: 8/10
Interesting characters abound. The Main characters are well written and I enjoy the dynamic between Kuro and Sen. There are many reoccurring side characters, none of whom are very deep but they don’t need to be and they are used well. Sanju and Nijuku feel like actual children, naïve and curious about everything. Characters, and our understanding of them, grow throughout the manga. The eponymous Kuro can be somewhat inscrutable at first but you will get to know her.
Overall: 10/10
Not much more to say, a great manga from start to finish. Would recommend if you can deal with 4koma and episodic storytelling, you will not be disappointed.
Good
• The art is so good I literally didn’t notice it was a 4koma manga until it I saw "4koma" in the tags
• There didn't feel like there were any dud anthological chapters, the manga is consistently high quality
• Great ending, I was worried that it would be disappointing with all the build-up, but it delivered in the end
Bad
• Some chapters can be confusing, sometimes it felt like the pages had been jumbled up
Extra Subjective
• Episodic chapters
