Reviews for Immortal Regis
Back to MangaImmortal Regis is a Shounen, Supernatural, Action, Adventure about your typical teenager, who undergoes an unexpected life-changing experience. Well to go into more detail the story follows an average teenage boy (Chae Jae Hyuk), living a simple life but that life then suddenly comes to an end, when he gets caught up in the battle of a Denizen of Chaos/demon necromancer (Serin). Now he must cast away any earthly attachments and follow his new master to the world of Chaos, with a specific goal in mind. From that point on the story moves at a rapid pace; introducing numerous characters and supernatural concepts that anyone readingthis must get accustomed with. However it isn’t long before the direction of the story moves to the typical adventurous quest. Though in this case it proves to be an effective plot-device for all the shounen fans, reading this manga and the story only gets better as it progresses through this quest, developing as it goes along.
Immortal Regis has some fairly interesting, all-round, shounen characters, with most of them being some kind of extraordinary supernatural being. The main protagonist Chae Jae Hyuk is a decent guy who’s forced into a dreadful situation. Sure he has some annoying traits but this can be forgiven, as he develops through numerous trials and expresses his determination. Not to forget the enigmatic girl who started this all, Serin who’s a competent fighter and very appealing when she does things that are out of character. There’s also a plethora of supporting characters no one can get bored with and some of them play a major part in the story (e.g. Depore), while the rest are just there for convenience sake.
When looking at the artwork for Immortal Regis, I can certainly say that it’s one of its strong points. This manhwa goes for the gothic look, which suits the theme perfectly but the artwork can be a bit sketchy and difficult to follow, during fight sequences. The character designs in general are very simplistic, with them having some round chibi features however there are quite a few imaginative ones, most notably the main characters.
Overall Immortal Regis is a very enjoyable manhwa that is certainly worth the experience for any shounen reader. Sure almost anyone here can, of the top of their head, name a few similar shounen manga (Bleach, Soul Eater, etc.) but that doesn’t mean this manhwa can’t produce a story of its own. Before beginning this manhwa make sure you know that there are still quite a lot of unexplained mysteries about the story that may take some time before they’re all explained.
Immortal regis is a must read for all shounen/supernatural/action manga lovers!!! THE STORY : Great! The idea of making a zombie the main character of a manga/manwa never occured to any other author as far as I know. That's what I like about it : it's unique and original. The plot is full of adventure and mystery at the same time. There are many things covered in mystery which makes the story even more captivating. THE ART : Great! That's something I've noticed at almost all korean artist. They have a different way of drawing characters compared with manga artists. As far as I'm concerned I've read manymanwa that have better art than some manga.Well it's just my impression maybe.Coming back to the subject, this manwa's art is extremely good!I liked it a lot!
THE CHARACTERS : The relashionships between characters is still evolving.Like I said, the whole story is mainly covered in mystery. However, one thing is for sure : there is definitely something between the two main characters ^_^ .On the other hand, the story mainly focuses on Jae Hyuks mysterious ability to awaken the De Pore power (it seems he isn't an ordinary boy;of course, this happens in all fantasy/supernatural manga - he's the main character after all XD).His uniqueness atracts many enemies, but he also encounters people that want to protect him , like Serin and Infinity, for example. However,Jae Hyuk's destiny is extremely important for Chaos' future!(sorry for the spoiler, but I'm sure you would have figuered that out too XD)
ENJOYMENT?You'll definitely enjoy this manwa!Trust me!
All in all,you MUST read it!It's fantastic!
First off, someone needs to explain to me HOW this manga got so many positive reviews. This manga is certainly over-hyped. I'd give it an OVERALL score of 4, with a HIGH score of 7 for art and a LOW score of 3 for characters. I will use some slight spoilers in this review, but nothing that should ruin your enjoyment of the manga. Also, I have to confess I have not read the sequel. I don't intend to do so for the near future. To give credit where it is due, I think the author did have a solid story planned out from thestart which was suppressed and lost due to the format. Had this been a LN, I think the author would have had a much better chance to develop his characters right and lay out the dynamics of the world. The pacing of the manga in the start is very slow -- and slower to lay out the exposition -- and it is extremely fast towards the end.
The plot of this manga is very confusing; to the point I would say that 'confusing' is an understatement. It starts out a bit like High School DxD, progresses quickly into a pace like Mx0 with less comedy, then we get a scenario a bit like Owari no Seraph and lapse off into an ending that invited the reader to continue reading in the next series. The lack of a conclusive ending did not contribute to my enjoyment of the series. Characters are introduced rather haphazardly and the world building is mediocre at best. Even by the end I didn't understand anything about Orvis or the way it is governed. I'm also not sure if it is just an academy or an entire city. The powers of the characters are also not scaled well. Readers are not explained the source of the character's magical powers or the reason for the variation in powers. This need not be a problem, but at many points in the story, characters have sudden power-ups that make little sense and the inability of the reader to gauge the sense of threat to the MCs makes each encounter less interesting. As a reader, I never found myself invested in the story, like I do for One Piece.
The art is actually fairly good and the fanservice is also not overtly scattered at odd-points in the panels. There were a few scenes where I thought the fanservice was badly placed, but it isn't too problematic.
The characters are where this manga scored really low. Characters are not consistent. The female MC was badass in the beginning and -- remarkably suddenly -- transforms into a lovestruck girl with low self-esteem. How she fell in love with our MC, I will never know. The male MC started out as a serious character, then seemed to become some average MC of a harem anime and then reverted to serious. The MCs friends are introduced and then forgotten rather quickly. The motivations of characters are never fully explained. We don't know anything about the teachers of this academy, or the motivation of the four leaders of this society, or even the real motivations of our MCs. Serin's motivations are especially confusing.
The overall muddle of the plot, the inconsistencies of the characters and the poorly-developed world makes for a less-than-enjoyable experience.
TL;DR: I would recommend people to skip this manga. If I eventually bring myself to read the sequel and form a better opinion of this, I'll revise my review here. It's just a messy series at all points.
I love how they don't give the main charater to much power from the get go. I find in alot of manga's they give the main charater so much power only there rival can stand up to, But in IR they have a well done set up and my thanks for doing such a good anime. Crossx
