Reviews for Evergreen
Back to MangaSo I'm typing this review right after I finished this manga, and let me tell you what, this manga lost all everything in 1 chapter towards the end. It completely ruined everything they had built up that they could have done more with for some twisted weird ending that I didn't care much for. But that's juts me, maybe you'll like it... maybe Story: It's about a president of a club and a swimmer in the swim club that really like each other. When they eventually tell each other their feelings it goes great but things happen and eh it got weird real quick. You gottaread it to find out cuz no spoilers
Art:
Good, not the best in my opinion but it's borderline passible. Idk what else to say, I'm not a artist
Characters:
It felt like that the male and side characters had things going for them but wasn't explored deep enough so they kinda fell flat but the female mc that the male mc likes has one of those deredere archetypes. So yeah kinda all generic.
Enjoyment:
Pretty good until things got weird because of this I felt entirely unsatisfied at the end. However if you want to see the plot twist that comes at the end go read it. It average at best.
Overall:
Had so much potential but didn't explore enough of the characters to fufill the potential. So fell flat and ended up being a pretty bad manga in my opinion. But what does my opinion matter, go read it for yourself and make your own judgement because I'm just that 1 dude on mal.
Although simply six chapters so far, this monthly manga shows serious promise. The mangaka Takemiya, Yuyuko famous for adapting the light novel toradora into a very nice manga differentiating itself from the anime does a good job once again of establish differences between characters and how these opposites can attract. The story is relatively simple but yet the art and the way it is presented although with not too much detail yet due to the length is quite enjoyable. Yoshimatsu Hotaka is a boy with a rather dark past, he isnt open to many people at all and he always looks at this one girls headmires who is a very good swimmer, after some cliche encounters which everyone can expect in any rom com they know each other, but because of his past he sets there meeting off on the wrong note because he is afraid.
This manga is promising and anyone interested in rom coms should follow this. There arent too many details known yet due to the only 6 chapters out scanlated so far but has great potential as a rom com. Good read to pass some time and enjoy.
So this is right after i finished reading this cause i was in the mood for a good rom-com and i just came upon this short 20 chapter series so i decided to give it a shot and Ima just be straight up and just say that this is not ur typical rom-com it starts off like one and u think that it will be but it hits u with something and I was like wtf is this shit like its kinda fucked up but its still a decent read its just that wont be expecting a typical ending. Like the other works that Iknow the author made were really good imho (golden time, and toadora) but this is different but it still has really good art. Like i was expecting a good happy romance but i got hit with a fat fuck u so yea if u want to know what i mean by something (its a spoiler)
They turn out to be siblings and its like wtf
This is a case of a manga that had potential but needed more time to be fleshed out, it seems that this got axed because by the second half of the story it was rushing to the end with a lot of moments that needed more build-up to be impactful, however, while the ending wasn't great, I think this is overall a fun read especially since it's a short read with only 23 chapters, it has good moments and good art with good shot composition and I think that makes it worth reading even if the ending isn't great, but at least it's not outrightawful or anything.
If you wanted something like Toradora or Golden Time this might've been like them if it had more time in the oven, but for what it is now you're not gonna find it here, but you might like what you read.
Honestly, this gave me mixed feelings. Story: 8 The start of the story was intriguing, with the protagonist having a cliche crush towards a popular girl and portraying their own personal troubles within the first few chapters. The flow of the story was chill, flecks of comedy really upped the ranking. The set up for the story was definitely enjoyable, seeing how Hotaka's and Niki's interest towards each other built up was cute. Story telling was pleasant and poetic, it was very unique in that aspect. I think around the final volumes was when the manga had rushed to reveal truth about the characters and theirstories, extremely twisting a lot of the already built-up love and respect I had for the story.. The ending can definitely leave you feel many things but confusion would really be one of them. I'm not saying that stories like these do not exist irl, and while they certainly do, the ending (especially last chapter) to the manga was sketchy and did not feel very meaningful as it should have.
Art: 6
Nothing much to say here, the art was pleasant to look at and the artist very certainly portrayed each character great. Everything was anatomically correct, panels were done alright and the effects were often very expressive. It did not appeal so much though, the art style was nothing out of the ordinary and it seemed very standard. It is a 6 not a 5 only because I think the backgrounds were nicely drawn and objects, such as (minor spoiler) Niki's motorcycle, the keyring she had, etc. The pool, school, buses, and water when Niki dives in or swims in is shaded with a lot of effort.
Character: 7
Now each character was definitely unique and realistic to some point, but imo the side/minor characters definitely popped out more. On-chan's and Soga's comedy subtle romance (and Shake and Soga's little rivalry over her) was adorable and hilarious. At this point they were more interesting to me than the actual characters. Because of that, they're not just some random side or filler characters to enlarge the story of the protagonists; they're so full of life and have their own story develop.
The protagonists, Hotaka and Niki, were realistic as both of them share family problems and trauma which is what brings them together eventually. This family aspect is so important in their character that it adds depth to understanding their personalities more. I also like how the creators try to bring in as many sides to their traits, like Niki's roughness (badass attitude) when she is annoyed at herself or a student accusing her wrongly, lol, which nicely contrasts the anxious rounded Hotaka that can barely muster courage.
Enjoyment: 8
I personally enjoyed the story, whilst it wasn't the best it could have been, it did keep me flipping the pages. However, others might not exactly like it because of the twists at the end and the ending explains the truth but explains little of the solution to how the whole...situation ends? Story telling was great but around the final chapter it did not elaborate enough.. The series was pretty memorable but it would not be something I'd want to willingly re-read.
Overall: 7
It did not reach its full potential, at a time I felt like the writer was not sure where to go with the story and hence it ended with mixed feelings. Characters were a strong point and probably one of the few reasons I'd recommend anyone to read this series.
Story: Overall pretty great as expected from Takemiya Yuyuko-sensei, Expect for the plost twist that was pretty obvious to happen (which i didn't like) so i wasn't really surprised about it. Art/Character Design: pretty good, especially Awaya Niki's character design. Enjoyment: On the enjoyment part... if you happen to not like "incest" then i wouldn't recommend this. Since there's a part in the story where two of the characters (not gonna say who for the sake of not spoilinh too much.) Find out that they're actually related by blood when they finally when on their first date. Overall: I highly recommend it if you love "Toradora!"/Love Takemiya-sensei's works.
The most honest review you will find about this one manga. It really follows through on the tragedy, no one physically dies but I promise you two characters hearts die and most likely you heart will also die, maybe a lot maybe a little. The story is about a boy who I would say is somewhat gloomy meets the #1 chick in the school and she says yes. They both undoubtedly love each other and regardless of what you hear in other reviews and in the story believe me they love each other. They cant be together, or else it would be a travesty ofmankind and human nature, its simply not meant to be (you'll find that out within the last 3 chapters)
The art is hella good. The cuteness shines in all the chicks and all the dudes are either plain, handsome, or gloomy (MC).
The characters develop fast and well and can easily be understood until the eventual plot twist which leads to tragedy.
Loads of enjoyment before the last four chapters cause its a really soft hearted romantic love manga then you soul gets crushed and you hate the author and wanna raise pitch forks outside their house.
Overall, if you aint into tragedy and find sadness in manga hateable skip this, seriously SKIP THIS NOW!!! or else always know that the feeling of when you love someone so much that you cant imagine living without them to the point where its so pure that if it doesn't happen youll stay in forever heart ache. This manga delivers that feeling in the very last image and leads up to it throughout the manga.
I really like the story and I would give it a 8 In general. Why? I saw many negative comment about this manga but personally I think this manga deserve better than that. This manga is really underrated, I came here because I really love Yuyuko Takemiya story (Toradora!, Golden time...). It is true, the ending is not what we expected, the ending is not very clear. They were hiding their relationship but for what reason? 1. Because they are brother and sister so it would be very awkward if people know brother and sister were couple? 2. Because they are still couple, they still love eachother but they doesn't want people to know about it since they are brother or sister?
The ending wasn't clear enough to let us know the truth but that's very nice of it. Some people prefer this ending and some people prefer the other. The 1. is very realistic, the 2. is a happy ending so it depends the taste of readers.
What's a bit unfortunate is the story is a bit too short, I would wish to have more detail about them both and there's some small thing a bit confusing, the part where Niki ( with a mask) kill Niki (kid) in Hotaka's dream. Really not sure what's he trying to tell us.
In conclusion, I really love the idea of the story, I love the way it ended, the art is great but it was a bit too short and some part was a bit hard to understand
I've struggled with how to evaluate and rate Evergreen. I'm a fan of Yuyuko Takemiya's writing, and we see elements of her skill in this story, but there are several flaws that drag down the quality of the experience. That being said, there is one component of this manga which I think is largely above reproach: the artwork. Akira Kasukabe did a great job, especially with character design. I think the main problem from which most others stem in this story is the character writing. Most of the characters were given reasonable attention. On and Shunsuke are amusing and surprisingly deep (given the relatively short lengthof the manga). Hotaka isn't the most notable main character you'll ever encounter, but is definitely serviceable. Niki, however, is severely underdeveloped. Which is unfortunate, since having her back story and character psychology well developed was critical to the success of this story. She is easily the most important character in Evergreen. Almost all conflict and progression stem from her actions. However, there often weren't enough historical references (e.g., actions, thoughts, and decisions) to provide an explanation for her behavior. While reading I often found myself thinking that I didn't understand her. Even by the end of the story she still seemed like a stranger to me.
I liked the plot and themes of the story, even though much of the drama and conflict is ineffective and confusing. There's one theme often (seemingly) used for fetish indulgence in anime/manga that is explored in a more serious/realistic manner by Evergreen, which I appreciated. I also thought the author did a great job foreshadowing the major plot twist. Given the state of Niki's character and the length of the manga, I think the romance was good enough.
Even with the aforementioned complaints, I still ultimately found some enjoyment in Evergreen. If you're a fan of Yuyuko Takemiya and/or romance stories, I think it's worth reading.
While I think I did overall enjoy this and think it tackled it's major themes presented, I think the ending was seriously rushed. I feel like when the big reveal happens, Niki turns 180. Then turns another 180 when the MC rescues her from the cabin. It's like Niki didn't have time to properly develop into her own character if that makes sense. The way she acted was understandable but I feel like we needed a deeper dive into her head. Also, I feel like the ending is extremely rushed. Yes, it gets its point across but it would be nice to have the twoMCs learn to live with reveal after the fact. We get very little dialogue between the two after they both find out the big reveal. I can't give it anything over a 7 because of that of that and think I am probably overrating it then even. It's a fine and quick read but seriously rushed
Evergreen is not your casual non-concequince anime incest garbage anime, like ''KissxSis'' or ''Oreimo;''it genuinely blew my pants off with its twists, and i'll be mentioning a few of them, so spoiler alert is in order here, i suppose. Story: It's not really any different from the usual, ''pathetic protaginist aiming for a girl way out of his league, without even realising it's love'' anime/manga plot on the surface. It's the sory of Yoshimatsu Hotaka and Awaya Niki, with Hotaka being the president of the lazy manga clun and Niki being the ace of the swimming club. Hotaka enjoys admiring her from above and below, atthe same time literally and figuratively, at the same time. After he's told he has to do a swimming test to continue as a student, i believe, he ends up having to be around the girls from the swimming club and they watch the poor little guy pathetically embarass himself in front of them, and most importantly Niki, with her actively helping him with the test like the best friend you'll ever have, starting an great relationship.
Honestly, the story seems, as i mentioned, generic and overdone, but the twists and plot points revealed later on will definitely surprise you. I won't reveal the most amazing one(even if i did warn for spoilers, but shut up)because it'd ruin the whole story for you. I'll give it an 8/10, for being great but not too ambitious.
Art: Damn, i love how Kasukabe Akira drew this series, from the attractive and appealing body designs on all the characters to the beautiful background, nice-looking actions and the petrifyingly real emotions portrayed through the art style. I mean, i felt Hotaka's pain for a second when he cried desperately and rolled around in be-- I'm making this sound bad, aren't i? 9/10, nonetheless!
Characters: Here's where it gets real: Takemiya Yuyuko's pretty well-written characters that are generally believable and likeable. Hotaka, for a prime example, is a slightly anxious, slightly depressed student who just strives to interact with Niki, as if she's this...beautiful sun he can't reach(bad example, since he sees her as a lion, but eh). Niki herself, however, is not that simple to understand. She's energetic, beautiful and friendly...when she's happy with life, per say. When falsely accused, Niki goes all bully-like and could even resort to violance, going back to how she feels because of her past and all. The two side-chararcters that confused me a little, Hitachi On and Soga Shinsuke, who are also the side romance of the story, are hilariously fun to watch at times; On is Hotaka's kouhai an arguably his therapist. She's a smartass most of the time and enjoys pretending to misunderstand Hotaka just so she can see his reaction, and she's quite great in my opinion. Soga... The hell was the point, really? I mean, he's necessary so On doesn't remain alone and such, and their sub-plot was adorable beyond belief, but in the end what do we get from him? He shaves his haircut so he can prove he's gotten more serious about his studies and he realises that he likes On more than his 12 and a half thots at the school. He's not really...deep or interesting to any extent, but the other ones are great to me, so have a 7/10.
Enjoyment: I realised i spoiled what i didn't want to spoil by mentioning ''KissxSis'' and all, but nevertheless i LOVED reading this reletively short read. The ending is basically where the story began, but in a perfectly done way, with the character arcs fulfilled, and Hotaka finally feeling satsified, even if he can only watch Niki from afar and keep her back subtly. 10/10 in enjoyment, nothing else to say there.
My overall enjoyment with the seies was immense. Like most series i finish, am reading, put on hold or just drop, i found it randomly by browsing the ''Lovely School Life'' section, and i was happily surprised. Full recommendation, it's satisfying, the twist was straight-up brilliant and while Niki's 180 personality shift was literally the biggest bitch move i've ever read about, it worked perfectly and made sense. 8/10. Thanks for reading and i say give it a read, you might like it! Bye.
A nothing-out-of-the-ordinary manga club president, Yoshimatsu Hotaka, always enjoys his time to take a peek from the club's window to Awaya Niki, the Swimming Club Girl's Ace. Awaya Niki has athletic figure and enchanting face that make her known and admired to all of the students in the school. For being so perfect, Hotaka can't bear to take a step to even greet her, instead he chooses to be a secret admirer of her. But, the fate seems to say otherwise, for both of their longing soul. Picture Picture They encounter each other in the moment when Hotaka isn'tready for it. The minor character, On-chan, his vice president of manga club supports him all the way to make a move for Niki in another time. Somehow, Hotaka finds another chance to talk with Niki and then they are friends. It is clear here that Hotaka is presented with so much love for Niki. In another hand, Niki seems to have their own problem because of trust issues. Hotaka is ignorant enough with his environment, not too much having him in conversation outside from manga club members. Niki is a detached person even with her friends that she thinks only a bunch of people available around. The individual problems affect them in some way they form the relationship with others. This plot develops deeply involving family issues of Hotaka and Niki. This kind of development was predictable for me looking at the clue given earlier. In spite of the predictable event, I felt how heartbreaking it is. My emotions got stir there in the last one-third chapters. The last one-third of Evergreen is the turbulence of emotion. It's freaking me out when they clash on each other. They show their wounded hearts out and let it consume their thoughts and affect daily lives. Their friendship and club activities seem like in the verge of frozen age. The shocking, sad, anger, fed up, loss, disappointment; all of those feelings carefully presented in sensible way. In the end, I'm satisfied enough with the ending between Hotaka and Niki.
What was really good for me is the minor characters. They aren't look like the minor in other series who show up to fill the comedy part or give much more details of the minor characters only. The manga club members, Hotaka's friends, really are there to develop the story and give another bittersweet romance. They are being given role to support the development and also have their own story in love life. So fun to read since they are the source of most comical part.
The illustration has its own charming point. It is wonderful, both the background of it and expression of the characters. The shading is nice, right angle, made me imagine well. It's rare to see the background left blank. Even if the minor characters are given proper scenery. The simple classroom, outdoor activity, clothes, and effect for back up the emotions. The drawing will turn to be chibi often in comedy part and it’s so funny. I like the comedy because of how it is presented and in the way of sarcasm and drawing, especially when it's On-chan.
It's worth 8 in my opinion!
Pros:
The minor characters aren't just normal ones! Eh... (?) Well, for minor characters I like them as much as I was waiting for the development of major characters in their relationship. I like the way the mangaka did make the major characters ending that way since it's suitable with the feelings of the characters there. (FYI, I'm not fond of happy ending or sad ending, I'm neutral in which if the ending is corresponding with the story and characters personality who decide it, then it's good to go. Forcefully making it good or bad is a big no-no.)
Well-earned emotional moments from their romantic circumstances.
A lot of thoughts put in the characters making and how they should appear.
Nice comedy and art
Cons:
I can predict the outline of storyline.
A very traditional Japanese ending. Manga and anime of today are huge jokes right now (well, at least they're good for escaping reality), but sometimes mangakas create rare gems like this one. The initial plot really softened the reader up while leaving clues for the eventual ending of the story. In retrospect it was a little obvious, but the build-up was pretty enjoyable and the art was very well-drawn. If I had to compare the ending with some other manga, I would compare it to "Velvet Kiss" (totally recommend it, but it's low-key softcore). Both had very succinct and bittersweet endings that leaves things open for thereaders' interpretations while juxtaposing the two very Japanese concepts of "duty" and "personal desire."
Personally, I think that bittersweet stories like these reflect life very well: it sucks, but people endure and move on.
tl;dr: A manga that's mostly standard melodrama filled rom com, while slowly building up to a pretty intense and interesting finale. This manga for the most part it's a pretty standard drama filled romcom where no one understands each other and misunderstand each other's feeling leading to bouts of melodrama. I could sympathize with how much of a pessimistic insecure wreck the protagonist was but it didn't feel like there was much there in terms of character development. I also liked moments of Niki a great deal where she was quite cool, but overall thought she was a bit flat as well. Of the side characters, I also liked On's personality and her character in general, though I didn'tparticularly think Soga made a good match for her and overall thought the whole arc involving them was kind of weak. This pretty standard phase which is semi-decent and pretty generic takes up about three fourth of the series, with the focus on building up the relationship between Hotaka and Niki pretty slowly into being in a pretty good place, and I suppose it does a decent enough job of it. However, this is all just build up, as the main plot begins after that. There's a plot thread that's built up in the background that comes to the forefront, and things crank themselves up to 11, the tone takes a pretty major shift, and things gets really crazy, very far from generic, and super interesting. How it was built up was actually pretty good, in that it hinted at it strongly enough that I was sort of expecting it, but partly because of the tone and other reasons I didn't feel they would go through with it, so when it was actually revealed and it went in that direction I found it tremendously interesting. This whole phase was really messy and rushed, but I thought it was a pretty good story told pretty well with some really solid character relationship development at the end, which contributed to an ending that while ridiculous I was satisfied with. The art was also pretty solid.
