Reviews for Is this Girl for Real!?
Back to MangaNote, major spoilers ahead. An average manga with an awful ending. That's pretty much all you need to know about this manga. I'm hard pressed to call this manga a romance, as it felt like the entire series the author was to scared about offending anyone to actually have any romantic progress between Narumi and Jun. It was pretty episodic so I can't really say the story was all that special or even present really. Finally the ending. I find the soft core reverse-NTR ending absolutely murdered any fondness I had for this manga. It took Jun, the main male protagonist and instead of pairing himwith the main female protagonist, the one the author spent the entire manga building Jun's relationship, and paired him with a side character. He completely discarded Narumi in favor of a side character who had a crush on Jun just because he was scared of the age gap taboo and completely crushed any character development, character relationships and momentum this manga had.
Overall,
Story: 2
Pretty typical episodic stuff with no special note, but the ending absolutely murdered any "story" this manga had, and made the rest pointless.
Art: 6
Not bad, fairly attractive and nice enough too look at. Though not nearly good enough to compensate for the manga's dismal story and character.
Character: 1
Literally makes no sense. It's like instead of marrying you're girlfriend of ten years you choose some random chick at the bar you met once. Leaving everyone wondering what the hell just happened.
Enjoyment: 3
It was averagely enjoyable until that absolutely awful ending.
Overall: 2
It was pretty average maybe a 5 or a 6 until the end. The end just made the manga worse. It made the characters make no sense, it made the story pointless and it corrupted any enjoyment you once got out of it.
In summary, it's soft core NTR, jump ship lads, unless you like that kinda thing.
The protagonist is a 28 year old, unemployed, alcoholic hottie named Narumi Kawase. For reasons unknown (no spoilers here, you'll have to find out yourself!), she's out of a job and is now scraping by as the assistant of an established manga artist. At first glance, this manga is seemingly another take on the harem genre, especially if you consider the amount of attention the deuteragonist Jun Yoshikawa gets. However, as the series progresses, you'll see a lot of the other characters being fleshed out and having their share in the spotlight, as well as see how their personal and romantic lives advance, which isa great thing since this series is very character driven.
The anime is a romantic comedy, slice of life type of deal. With the latter in mind, it's important to make sure your characters are fully developed and have a sense of groundedness about them. That is what "Kono Onee-san" does very well, and it's always a pleasure (and a riot) to see them interact with each other. Whether it be supporting each other through tough times, finding the solution to their problems, and seeing the sheer chaos that erupts from their misunderstandings, I did not have one boring moment while reading this series.
The artwork is a pleasure to look at (especially Narumi), and stays consistent throughout. There are some odd looking frames with some of the guys, but they're few and far in-between.
"Kono Onee-san" is a wonderful series that intrigued me from beginning to end, and it succeeded without being over-the-top like most romantic comedy manga. The only thing keeping me from rating this an overall 8 is, like a lot of niche manga I've read recently, its ending is hastily wrapped up and doesn't leave a satisfying conclusion. The author,Tsutomu Mutsuki, has stated that he wanted to have at least twenty more chapters, but unfortunately could not reach his quota. It's a shame that has to happen to such a good series like this one.
Personally, this manga is an 8 to me, but I'd recommend it as a 7 for everybody else. Enjoy!

This show is a 9/10 before the final Chapter (c49/48 depending on how you count the half chapter). The characterisation and devlopment of the characters is really good until the final chapter or 2 (these where very well done through the slow paced story and would get a 10/10 without the final chapter) It's a really intresting (if predictable) story that would get a 7/10- the chapters don't always follow on from another and there is sometimes little connecting them- the story is meerly a medium for the 2 MC an the SC development. However, the ending is really bad, the writer clealy hadn't planned on thatbeing the last chapter until the last 2 or 3 chapter previous- Either they had originally planned for the series to have another arc or for some other reason they couldn't write the ending they had planned. The ending literly makes no sence from the way the set up the Characters in the rest of the chapters, there was little set-up for the ending and the last chapter is just trying to tie up all the 'loose ends of the story' but it seems like even if this was the planned end to the story it would need at least another 15-20 chapters to properly haddle the events of the last chapters to do it properly and without editing early chapters to set this up it would still feel like forced BS
If you read this and enjoy this please do not read the final chapter (crunchyroll counts it as chapter 48)
If you like a thrilling romance this story is not for you If you like super casual romance where the author seems to be making each chapter have almost nothing to do with the next this is the manga for you i don't know the people here read the manga saw it was getting kinda interested decided on a rating and never came back to change it when they read through the whole thing. When i saw that it was tagged as seinen i was expecting a lot more than what i ended up with it was more like a kiddy story that when youwere thirteen you thought would have been sorta kinky i honestly wasn't expecting much but it seemed the author was making the manga for kids rather than adults no where in the manga did i see something original or anything special about this manga if you're going to read this manga just note that
The way i see the story its about a kid almost perfect and seems like the author does a good job at making him seem popular while at the same time making it seem like all the girls that like him just would make him their fall back boy in case their real love doesn't work they would probably pick him up as a close second the ending there is so little conflict that the mc just looks like a kid having a bad day but if you just want to see a very boring romance story with the dumbest problems in the world this manga is a perfect candidate for it
"Is this bait and switch for real?" should be the actual title. Spoilers ahead- I'll not go into much detail about the manga, aside from one very large annoyance: The ending. Imagine reading your typical fantasy story, you got your hero, your princess that he saves from the demon lord, and his funny sidekick thief or whatever. Now imagine him fighting the demon lord, just as he is about to strike the last blow...
the sidekick jumps in, critical hits the boss to oblivion, turns on his heel, dashes past the dumbfounded hero and ploughes the princess in front of him.
Well, not thaaat extreme, but it's what i felt at the end of this manga.
Instead of going with a unorthodox relationship which the entire story built up to, the main dude just chooses a sidegirl that barely came up.
Not only was it established multiple times that he has a thing for older ladies, and that he only sees the other girl as a little sister, the story also outright told us that the main characters have feelings for each other.
It also doesn't help that for some reason, almost every character that appeared had a relationship at the end, aside from our main heroine.
Heck, even the gay dude and that lesbian chick found somebody... even though they suddenly turned straight, which raised my eyebrow.
Making a story about a older girl who never dated, and then end it on a "Hah, she still didn't get any, PSYCHE" note.
Everything is great until the ending that is just horrible im sorry but if you like good romance i do not recommend reading this manga, it literally throws all character development out the window for a last minute substitution of a character that could have been written out of the series and it wouldn't have changed the story a bit. Why the author had the need to ruin a great story with such a failure of an ending is beyond me this is one of those stories that had the potential to be one of the most enjoyable love stories but ruins the entire thingin the end.
I'm actually kind of surprised there isn't a review for this manga yet. I'm just going to make this nice and simple, seeing as the chapters come out pretty slowly and I don't remember too much about the beginning. Story: 9 I remember I felt as though this manga had a pretty slow start. Not much romance was happening at all. It was more like, a long stream of steady character development, but it wasn't enough to hold all of my interest. Eventually, the romance started to sprout. And I love the way this story goes about it. If I could find a way todescribe the approach to the romance of this series it'd be... mature... and delicate. It's most certainly slow. And as I always say; The slower the romance, the better! (Slow romance tends to have a lot more development and meaning to it.)
The story is about a young, I believe 15-16 year old boy and a woman in her mid-twenties, who end up living together because the woman (Narumi) is working for his mother, who is a manga artist.
Eventually throughout the story the two begin to learn more about one another, and even start to change the way they live because of it.
For example, Narumi actually starts drinking less and less throughout the series because Jun told her he doesn't want her to drink anymore.
After a while, Narumi starts to noticeably gain romantic feelings for Jun, but she's actually partially conflicted to feeling this way, due to the difference in their ages. So she keeps it to herself, only to at times show her true feelings ever so slightly in situations that call for it.
The same goes for Jun, though he's a tad more clueless about his feelings than Narumi is.
Errr, I better stop before I end up summarizing everything that has happened so far.
The story is very good and approached in a well done manner. It's one of the slower romances, which means it's one of the better kinds of romances.
Art: 7
The art isn't the greatest thing in the world, but it isn't bad either. I'd say it's straight out "good" and nothing more or less than that.
Characters: 8
Jun, the main protagonist, isn't really why I'm giving this section an 8. I'd say it mainly goes out to Narumi, and a couple of Jun's friends, because they're all simply charming. Narumi is very well developed and it is interesting to watch her struggle with her inner romantic conflicts when it comes to Jun.
Plus she wears glasses. That's a big plus.
Enjoyment: 9 and Overall: 9
Kono Onee-san wa Fiction desu!? was a bit slow at first, and I believe my first rating for it was around 7 or so. After a while, it's grown to a 9, and a strong 9 at that. I look forward to every new chapter, and pray that it isn't ending soon, seeing as it has tons of potential.
Kono Oneesan wa Fiction desu... It's a manga with great characters that started out strong, stalled for a bit, then went for a rushed and underdeveloped conclusion. Let's start off with the one I feel most divided on - Story (beginning-middle 9/10, ending 4/10): The story is pretty simple, it is just a slice of life with elements of harem and romance. The main character finds a passed out girl on the side of the road, gets in a ecchi situation, and learns later that she is his mother's (a mangaka) assistant. He teaches her about her job, she gets a crush on him, characters from hisschool are introduced... and that's about it for the story, with the exception of the ending.
The ending was a rushed ending, and I personally found it very unsatisfactory. Without spoiling it too much, I will say that relationships remain mostly unsolved, the canon pairing was weird, and it felt like they were trying to tie up loose ends by serving it as a sort of spaghetti.
Now for the first of the nice categories - Art (8/10):
Art was good, not exemplary, but I never looked at anything as "off", and everything looked like what it was supposed to, though I never had a "wow I love that art" moment either.
Character (9/10):
The characters were what made the story. The main character is a confident and mature high schooler, contrary to so many other harem leads. He's not boring, nor overly comedic, and he often acts as a straight man, while still maintaining his own personality. Every girl in his class likes him, whether romantically or as a friend, to the point of him getting valentines chocolate from all of them. However, he leans towards the side of being oblivious about anything love related. The attempt of the author to solve this is about 50% of my grudge towards the ending, as it was 2 chapters of character development that came out of the blue and seemed unrealistically forced.
The main girl for the majority of the story is his assistant. She is an attractive, dedicated, and intelligent young women, but she has several flaws. First, she is terrible at alcohol, and will use the main character as a pillow to sleep with if she gets drunk, and second, she often leaps to conclusions, despite there being not enough info to fully conclude that. However, she is a loveable and interesting character. She quickly gains a crush on the main character; but alas, the manga never fully goes all the way with this, another of my main faults with the ending.
The other major girls are primarily 2 of his classmates. The first is a small shy loli who also jumps to conclusions, and she had a crush on the main character since the first chapter. Unfortunately, he character remains able to be described in a single sentence for the entire manga, and is my candidate for most boring girl.
The second girl is a much more interesting character, in my opinion. She loves to tease the other girl and is generally a playful and fun character with a good sense of humor. Early on she seems to develop a crush on the main character; however, the author seems to have forgotten that, as she doesn't show much signs for the rest of the manga. Despite being an interesting and likeable girl (and personally my vote for best girl), she never gets much character development, primarily being a sidekick for the loli, and rarely getting moments for herself.
Other characters drop in from time to time, but most of them have their own relationships and are basically side stories, so the harem pretty much remains at 3 relevant characters. However, each and every one of them is an amusing and interesting character.
Now, the most important field - Enjoyment (8/10):
I would give the beginning 10/10 for good character introduction. I would give the middle 8/10 for keeping my interest. I would give the ending 2/10, for one of my least favorite endings of all time, and would recommend you stop reading as soon as you see definite pairings being established (excluding for minor characters), as it just goes downhill from there.
Overall, 7/10, a great manga ruined by a terrible ending.
One word: Disappointing. I'm a casual reader who happened to be in a phase of shota plot craving so when this one popped out on similar manga on 'Puppy Lovers' (somebody please take it down), I decided to check it out. Cover has a shota in it so I proceeded to binge-read and waste my good sleep schedule on this. The first parts were pretty decent. It was actually good until the last chapters hit me hard with conclusions out of nowhere. It was really unexpected you'll be asking yourself why? how? and you want your wasted time back. Art was good though, chapters are prettyrepetitive like you can summarize 5 chapters into 1. It has interesting characters not until it blew up in the end. It felt really forced and rushed.
I'm probably being generous giving this a 6 out of 10. The artwork and characters are awesome, 10/10. The narrative or plot is terrible. This is a collection of subplots without any focus on a main story. The closest we get to a plot is: who will Narumi end up with? Will she find love? But few of these subplots actually give us a satisfactory conclusion. The ecchi, which is quite lewd in the beginning and promises great fan service, disappears halfway through. It's like they changed it into a family and children's manga halfway through and we never got the fan service present in thefirst couple of chapters. Did the lack of fan service lead to a decline in readers and the cancellation of the series?
Another reviewer states that the mangaka had hoped for another 20 chapters, and maybe that is the problem. Perhaps it was canceled due to declining readership. So the story, like the fan service, fizzles out and disappears. And the art and characters, worthy of a better (or finished?) manga, end up being wasted.
ENDING SPOILERS The premise to this story was very basic and had the setup of every H-anime I have seen, though that isn't necessarily a bad thing and the story was very nice throughout the manga. Albeit being incredibly predictable until the end it had a way of making you enjoy things you already knew would happen. The ending was the one thing I couldn't predict but that doesn't mean it was good, the ending was horrible. They made Jun get with his childhood friend but it doesn't really feel that way because they sort of just brush over it, on top of that Narumi remainsat the house without ever actually resolving her feelings for Jun.
The art was a little off, the characters weren't very good looking. The only exceptions being the half naked Narumi with her hair down and Shirakawa at any given time. The panels were also pretty basic.
All of the characters were surprisingly interesting even if their backstories were fairly shallow. This manga had potential but like I said before the ending ruined it for me, so it only got a 5.
TL;DR; The only way I can desribe this is if someone gave you a blowjob, and just you are nearly busting a nut she stops , well this manga is like that. It's that fucking baaaad. The character designs and are awesome though. The story keeps you going flipping pages hoping something might happen , but none until the end , and suprise - you got blue balls. Stay away from this for your own sake. Holy fucking shit the prompt still says please write a longer review , I don't know what else to add I'm efficient and I've conveyed the message enough without spoiling shit MALwhat else do you fucking want.
Typical oblivious male MC. Female protagonist reminds me of Rias Gremory without being too overly sexual. Character development in good in the first 45 chapters. Childhood friend (1 year prior to story start) appears to collect on all of Female MCs hard work. There is so much more that could have been done to this story that it is a complete and utter letter down. The ball was dropped on the ending. It is maddening. If you don't like manga that discounts everything it built upon for the vast majority of its publication during the finale, do not read.I give this a 6/10 because I'd rather forget the ending ever happened.
It gets off to a really bizarre start in all the things that you might be used to, taking a horribly wrong turn. I think that's a good idea in general, but it was executed poorly in this manga. I'm one for the chaos of everything that seems great in theory going wrong, but the manga handled in a very lazy way. You see the main female character naked very early on, and I'm a fan of treating nudity as something human, but you only see her naked. the lead male character is probably the exact opposite of what anyone else would do in anysimilar situation. These are the two major components of the dream come true gone wrong for any teenage cisgender heterosexual boy that would love to spend a lot of time with the sexy heterosexual cisgender lady. this went down the very run of the mill path of "for some reason the male character's parents are gone from the house and for some reason this grown woman has to live with this teenager."
Feelings are developed, but then awkwardly addressed and or not addressed at all which leads to passive aggressive and petty behavior. Not so much jealously, which is common fair in these kinds of things between the other female characters. It was refreshing to see that, to say the least. and on the other hand, if you're not into everyone always having this happy-go-lucky slapstick romance with a fairy tale ending, this might be your thing. It also airs on the side of caution of being too dramatic and the characters taking themselves too seriously most of the time. Honestly, that is my thing, but otherwise the characters and events are very uneventful. For the theme and what they decide to do with the characters, the manga is too long.
It started off well but as the series hits about chapter 38 it goes downhill. The lead, Jun-Kun, is a young boy who often has to help his mom out with her mangas. Jun-Kun is a highly responsible kid who is mature for his age and demonstrates this when Narumi is introduced. Narumi is a 28 year old unemployed woman who enters Jun's life as she becomes his mothers' assistant. It's filled with a lot of ecchi moments and older women who seem to peek Jun's interest. That's why I despite the ending as it appears to happen out of nowhere as Jun starts to "develop"into a man. I find fault with the author as Jun is shown to be mature and understands what it is like to actually like someone. However, the person he falls for doesn't make sense story-wise. It is more realistic for him to fall for him but it happens quickly. I do like the girl but I felt like the author didn't want to experiment with complex topics like how a 28 year old could end up with a 16 year old. I wouldn't have a problem with this if the author slipped in more scenes with the girl he picks at the end and made it a slow romance manga.
Anyway, it was a disappointment that it ended in a way that I didn't deem as "good" but I respect the decisions made. This is a good manga for those that are interested in ecchi manga.
What started out as something I thought I could eventually read a couple of times to stave off the boredom and loneliness ended with me nearly destroying my whole house. Rather, I only destroyed some bones and muscles in a couple of idiots who thought they could try and mug me without getting trouble. Normally I don't write reviews and this probably shows through now but I just have to say it. This story had a great premise, but honestly was one of the worst endings I have ever had the pleasure of seeing. As I have already said, the story was pretty good with onlya few inconsistencies that I could overlook, but then it immediately started to feel rushed and it hurt me to know the worst route was selected.
The Art style itself was solid and consistent with the characters having a life-like feel to them for me, it was also rather pleasant at times to just look at.
The Characters could have done with a bit more work but that is the same everywhere you go.
But overall I think that it was a waste of my time and anyone else's time who has read it already.
But still if you don't believe me then read it yourself and be stuck with the thought you could have done it better.
