Reviews for Thermae Romae Redux
Back to MangaI loved Thermae Romae, and i love this sequel too. Redux is basically identical to the original in tone and structure, only with Lucius Now older and with a son, Marius. Despite his age and the occasional Back pain, he's still designing Bathhouses and still slipping through time to modern Japan to gather new ideas for the projects he's assigned. The formula is the same, but it's familiar in a comforting way. The only thing that would have made this better for me is if Satsuki hadn't disappeared from the story. I personally wanted more of Lucius and Satsuki interacting in the original, and even thoughsome readers felt their relationship was rushed or came out of nowhere. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I would have loved to see more of their life together in Rome, Lucius tackling his architectural responsibilities with her at his side. We do get a small glimpse of her through Marius' words, but not in the way i hoped. Still, this doesn't ruin thermae Romae Redux for me at all. The series is just starting, and honestly, in the original i wasn't even sure Satsuki would be able to return to Rome with Lucious, so i'm not ruling out the possibility of future hints or flashbacks
As with the original series, the artwork is wonderfully detailed, and the historical elements feel generally accurate—true to real Roman life with just enough embellishment to keep everything entertaining. If you enjoyed the original’s blend of humor, history, and bathhouse creativity, you’ll feel right at home with Redux.
