Reviews for Frogman
Back to MangaFrogman is a moderately ecchi seinen romantic comedy about a nice, nonathletic boy (who can't swim) who joins the swim team to get closer to a pretty girl. If that plot sounds uninteresting to you, then look elsewhere; Frogman is a fine example of it's type, but there is nothing here that's exceptional or even all that unpredictable. On the other hand, if that plot sounds like it might be fine... read on. Oh, and note that this isn't really a sports manga: the swim team setting is just an excuse to have girls hanging out in swimsuits. They don't go to swim-meets,and I think there are only three swimming races of any type in the entire manga.
Story (6): It's mostly a slice-of-life romantic comedy. The two spend most of the manga trying to sort out their budding romantic feelings for each other, while a series of antics ensue around them. The manga isn't long enough for this to get frustrating or for the jokes to get old, so that's good. On the down side, there is one storyline involving a rival high school that's a tad too dark for this manga, and the ending is a bit abrupt (though not altogether unsatisfying).
Art (7): Pretty girls in swimsuits. Lots of them. Otherwise, the artwork is serviceable shounen.
Character (7): Michiru is a fairly typical shounen rom-com lead: nice guy, hard working, nonathletic, and kind of spineless when it comes to women. That being said, he isn't as annoying as some others in the genre. Haruka is a bit more interesting, as she balances her desire to have fun and hang out with her friends, with her growing romantic feelings (that she's completely unprepared for). Otherwise, you've seen these characters before: busty, aggressive coach; tsundere romantic foil; the childish and lacking-in-boundaries girl who is in love with the tsundere; and a few other side characters who come and go without leaving too much of an impression.
Enjoyment (7): Some of the jokes are funny, Haruka is always pleasant whenever she's the focus of the story, the lead isn't overly annoying, and there is good eye-candy throughout.
Overall (7): If you like ecchi shounen rom-coms, you can certainly do a hell of a lot worse than Frogman. It's certainly not perfect, but it's a solid example of the genre.
In an attempt to read another Suzuka, I read frogman. If you like sports and romance this is probably a manga you should check out. The story follows a shy boy and in his conquest to get the better of himself in many aspects of his life. One day he meets a girl on the swim team, who is extremely talented at swimming and loves it. From the start the girl has quite a bit of interest in him the boy being quite dense thinks his love for her is one sided. Of course another girl shows up, a moody tsundere! Who hates everything about ourfine male protagonist, and how pathetic he is, however soon comes to love him.
In terms of a story, I think this would be far better off as a rom com, the sport aspect of this manga is a huge turn off because I feel like it was done poorly, and in terms of comparing it to other sport romances like Suzuka it really falls short.
The artwork is very nice and I can appreciate it and the faces and backgrounds.
All in all, if your interested in swimming with some romance this is for you but dont expect it to be top notch, this manga had potential to be really good, but dont let that stop you from reading it.
Frogman is about a boy joining swimming club because of a girl he likes, well it resembles Suzuka but I tell you this that is only where it resembles it. I would rate it lower if it weren't for the art and character of Haruka, the main heroine of this manga. Haruka is passionate in swimming, kind and so cute. What I don't like in this manga is that the story is not even about Swimming as a sports and also Michiru (main male protagonist) is such a loser, damn. Unlike in other sports manga you will see the development and how far did the protagonistwent with that kind of sport. Here in this manga they didn't even enter some swimming competition and till the end of the manga you will not see the development of Michiru, there is no cool factor in him. In terms of romance it is also a failure, because Michiru is so lame as a person and as a guy, so I don't know why Haruka came to like him. It is another manga wherein the Hero does not deserve the Heroine.
Therefore if you are looking for a manga that is sports and romance well this is not for you but if your looking for girls in theirs swimsuits and fan service this is for you.
tl;dr: A manga that was a pretty random mess in terms of plot and characters but was reasonably amusing nevertheless. This manga was all over the place. In the beginning it seemed to be kind of focused around Michiru trying to learn to swim with a bit of a pretty generic love triangle in the background with some characters that may have had potential. As it went on however, it became a mess with lots of random tone shifts as well the plot starting in a bunch of different directions but never actually going anywhere with a bunch of hints at plot threads that never materialized and a bunch ofplots that begin but mysteriously disappear from chapter to chapter, all of this ultimately leading to suddenly there being relationship development but in a really undefined and unclear way leading to a really random and completely lacking impact ending. And of course, being such a mess, it was pretty hard to care about the characters all that much either. Still, going in a bunch of random directions made it feel like it was moving pretty fast even if it never went anywhere so it felt reasonably interesting overall, and the humor was pretty solid all the way through so it was at least somewhat enjoyable throughout, even if it was trying to take itself too seriously. The art style was also pretty good, and at certain shots like covers and such it looked really good, but unfortunately the average level of quality throughout wasn't that great.
