Reviews for The Irregular of the Royal Academy of Magic
Back to MangaPersonally, I haven’t read a wide range of manga, but I’ve read enough to determine how pathetically generic this is. All it took was a couple of chapters, and since then it’s continued to go on a steep decline. There’s always a chance that it could improve in the future however judging on the path it’s going, it looks like this will only worsen. Story - 3 Mediocre af, seems like the mangaka doesn’t understand what plagiarism is, because I would say 90% of the plot so far is taken from other big names. Art - 6 The art is alright it but there’s nothing special about it, thecharacters mainly have a bland art style and the couple of fight scenes so far have been quite badly illustrated. The one main positive I saw, was that the magic effects looked kinda cool, but that alone can’t make up for the rest of the art.
Character - 3
Typical OP mc ;-;. As if that wasn’t bad enough, he also has literally no emotion. He’s always expressionless and the aura he’s supposed to give is a badass one, yet the mangaka failed miserably in portraying that. The rest of the characters are also completely 2D and aren’t even worth talking about.
Enjoyment - 5
I know I’ve made it sound completely and utterly trash, (which it is) but each chapter I’ve been anticipating, well not exactly, more like hoping something special/unique/cool happens which is pretty much the only thing that drives me to continue reading this. (Oh yeah, and maybe future encounters with the girls)
Overall - 5
Considering there are only 6 chapters translated so far, I wouldn’t completely encourage you to ignore it, because it’s not my job to drive away potential viewers. The manga has only 6 chapters translated so far so isn’t a massive waste of time if you don’t end up liking it. However, if you’re not one for the OP mc who doesn’t know what smiling or crying is and has a special ‘skill’ which results to inconceivable power and a harem, this might not be for you. I’m certainly hoping for this to improve, but as I stated before, there’s next to no chance of that happening.
I have to say, I love op mc power fantasy stories, even if they are kinda generic. When I first saw this, I thought it would be maybe a 5/10 cuz the art looked fine and the story seemed fine. But boy was I wrong. This trash is too trashy to be read. i have read it so that others don't have to. Story: I mean, it's generic af. There are no obstacles for mc-kun and it follows the generic 'nobles hate commoners' trope and other stupid cliches. Art: The art is good, but if it wasn't, it would have been cancelled in the first chapter. Character:The worst thing about all of this is the main character. He is the most emotionless, emo mc in all of manga. It just makes everything bleak.
Enjoyment: I did not enjoy this at all. There was no spice, I was just eating white bread that had a stick of butter slathered on to it.
If you really like super trashy generic op mc power fantasies, go for it. But, if you want to read something with substance, this is your worst choice.
I will try to explain this manga at first to new people/readers without spoiling too much at first based on the 20s chapters and my analysis of the manga plotline. is this manga cliche and a bit edgy....? Sadly yes it is very cliche, the standard generic cliche OP MC going to a magic school in a fantasy world.....but is that a bad thing? Not really, you can still enjoy the manga without thinking too much. The Art style is decent i guess in my opinion? This type of manga is fun and exciting for people that are not used to Cliche manga but probably boring tothose who read a lot of manga and can already predicted the storyline plot and pattern.....hell I can predict about 80-90% of what was happening as i read the chapter but meh the manga was still somewhat amusing to kill time.
For Example SAO(Sword art online) is still entertaining to people despite the cliches
The point i am trying to make is that while the Manga is not amazing, unique or complex, people can still be allowed to enjoy it despite the generic tropes. Just expect lot of cliche plots though....
Anyways more about the plot (Possible spoiler beware):
>At this point this is no need to read further and below is mostly just my mindless thoughts/rants. I am not saying the Manga is horrible...just some issue...<
MC is raised as a 'Secret Assassin' by a 'secret ORGANIZATION' and now is going to magic highschool for nobles where is looked down upon due to the fact that he is a 'COMMONER'......
Ok we get the Underdog effect trope. The fake underdog trope. Check.
Standard MC putting bullies in their place. Check.
OP power being show off by MC. Check.
Possible harem, starting with 2 girls....Check.
Possible Unique bloodline or cursed bloodline. Commoner MC that can use magic when only 'nobles' should be able to use magic. Check.
In my opinion this manga fits into the standard Fast food Power fantasy self-insert type of reading media....I do not mean self-insert into a standard generic MC but more like the type of MC insert that people wish themselves into when fantasizing cool advantures.
Like imaging a more badass cool version of their selves....Basically the MC fits the perfect mold for that. Cool, collected, kills people, OP as heck, has girls throwing themselves at him while he is not blushing or effected, fake underdog trope, elite secret Assassin and etc.
The MC personality is designed to be more cold-blood cool assassin aspect but we do not get much more unqiue aspect like his favorite food, is moral values, hobbies and etc.
See the thing is there are plot holes or minor mistakes if you look carefully....
#1 issue.
MC estimated age...
The MC is raised by a so-called good-nature person who teach him magic, MC is about 15-18 years old and apparantly 10 years since he started field work.....I think this is a mistake and more like 7-8 years of field work would make more sense since the MC seems to be the age of 6 to 8 when the Pops guy pick him up. If we assume he is maybe 6-7 years then 2-3 years of magic & assassin training before 10 years of field work then that means the MC would be around 18 to 21+ years old.....
10 years of field work would mean he been killing people since he was around the ages of 6-8, feels a bit unbelievable unless you mean the FIELD WORK counts the Magic/Assassin training or if his had a teacher helping him out at first.....this is if we assume the MC age is around 16 to 18 years old. MC could be 19 to 20 on the other hand but his youthful face seems to says he is around 16-18 years old and probably resound with teens better. BUT CHAPTER 3 SAYS HE IS 15 YEARS OLD......KILLING PEOPLE AT THE YEAR OF 5 YEARS OLD......fking weird to think, killing at the age of 8 or 9 would make more sense unless the MC just tagged along at the beginning to 'Observe'
10 years of 'Field work' seems to be more "EVEN" and "NICE" number, 10 years sounds better and more professional than 7-8 years of field work. A very minor issue
#2
Pops guy did not make a fake Noble background for him and the MC did not request for a Fake profile/background......LOOK.....you work for a 'secret organization' that kills people and keep the peace for the city right? You would think making some fake papers to pose as a low class low rank noble would be better than entering the royal academy as a Commoner who can use magic......The 'Pops' guy apparantly order the MC to enter a magic school to get a license + better living future option and the MC apparantly picked the Royal Academy due to low fee costs.....
2 issues here, 1 issue is what kind of money does the MC gets paid for his "jobs", I mean killing people for about at least 5+ years should be able to get you enough money to live lazy for 10 years right since it is a dangerous job.....Well this is assuming the Pops guy is paying the MC decent amount of money instead of pennies/Minimum wage.
I love OP main charcters. I personally have two favorite OP characters. Anos and Tatsuya. These two imo are OP characters done right but I don't know how to feel about this one. The story isn't bad but the setting is so generic. Story 7/10: It feels so generic and bland. The MC was abandoned and he was found by a great wizard the MC discovered he can use magic. From there he trained with the man who rescued him and he became a bonafide magician. Enrolls at a Magic Academy full of nobles and you can guess from there, that he shows his powertwo girls approach him and ask him to teach them. This is something I've realized with fantasy OP shows. MC is super OP, enrolls in an academy tries not to stand out but shows off his power and everyone wants to be strong like the MC so he will be forced to teach them.
Art 7/10: Pretty decent
Characters 7/10: The MC is your typical OP MC. He's expressionless and I don't I've ever seen him smile. He always has a serious which I think isn't bad considering how they are people who are after him. He's always cautious and wary of his surroundings which is something most main characters lack. I wish he showed some expression on his face. The other characters aren't worth mentioning. Rena looks innocent but Rua doesn't seem trusthworthy.
If you like fantasy OP stories like this the n go for it if not find something better.
I only have complaints about this story. The female leads are uninteresting and the MC's relationship with them feels so forced, since their entire relationship so far is a contract teacher-student relationship and a lot of kissing/s-x because that's necessary for magic transfusion for some reason?? The MC was also kind of raped by a friendly older sister character when he was only like 7 years old?? To clarify, she isn't an antagonist or source of trauma, she literally just had sex with him for the sake of magic training (but she made sure to mention that the child MC was her type), idk what made theauthor think that was a good thing to add to his story.
All the antagonists are stupid so far. The antagonists are basically just a bunch of people underestimating the MC because he's a commoner (despite him repeatedly showing that he's a one of a kind genius) and holy knights that hate the MC because why not.
The MC broke all the school entrance exams, like one of the exams was just to hit a target that was standing still with magic and the MC ended up creating a crater that would require several missiles to recreate and he still ended up LAST PLACE in school (most students couldn't even hit the target and no one even damaged it)
Alright all my venting aside, It's a very mid story with trash romance and trash antagonists. I wholeheartedly regret reading this due to the love interests and unsatisfying antagonists.
