Reviews for Love♥Monster
Back to MangaLove Monster was a great shoujo manga. If you like the romance type, with funny characters, and a serious plot on the side then you're gonna love this manga. The story revolves around a girl named Hiyo who goes to a school for monsters where you meet Kurou who is one of the leading monsters in the monster society because he is a crow. One of my favorite parts about the manga was learning all about his past with Hiyo and seeing their relationship evolve into something much, much bigger than the two of them. Later in the series you find out what their destiny andthe fates that they're meant to follow and it honestly just kind of melts your heart when you see how much they truly love each other.I would have liked to see a little more character developement from some of the characters especially Hiyo, but I loved all of them just as much with or without it. What can I say? I'm a sucker for love. -_-"
The ending is one of the cheesiest I've seen in a shoujo manga, but you really love it because it fits with the whole story. It's completely cute and adorable so I recommend this series for anyone who just wants to feel all warm and fuzzy inside at the end. ^^
Due to the overwhelming amount of strangely positive reviews, I've decided to write a little review of my own. DISCLAIMER: If you are a fan of this manga, read no further. I would give this manga a -10 if it was an option. I consider myself a fairly laid-back, tolerant person; in fact, I've never actually cared enough to write a review, but when the protagonist has had everything short of rape done to her (I'm sure that's in chapter four), I feel the need to say something. I picked this manga up thinking, "Oh, this looks cute." Excuse me while I vomit. I wasonly able to get through the first three chapters which is a new record for me.
By the third chapter, THE THIRD CHAPTER, our heroine has been stripped naked while unconscious, molested, was nearly raped, had her clothes ripped off of her, tossed around like a rag doll by all the male characters, thrown into a bathtub naked and forcefully tied up while the male protagonist violates her, and then he says, "I love you!" That's a pretty sick, twisted kind of love. You should be in jail buddy. You're the scum of the earth. Meanwhile, all this crap is glamorized. How romantic. If this had happened to me, I would need psychotic shock therapy after killing the creep first.
If this is what only the third chapter is like.....*shudders*
Let me catch my breath...ok, let's continue:
My biggest problem with this manga, is that it's practically porn masquerading as a sugary shoujo. Ecchi isn't even listed in the genre section! I imagine a perverted old man wrote this manga.
is attempted rape and molestation not a crime in japan? Has societal morality regressed so much that this is acceptable, even enjoyable? Where am I? the twilight zone? Hell?
So, if you enjoy all of the above, by all means, read this manga. But, if you are a fan of intelligent heroines that aren't treated like a piece of trash, decent men, and true romance, avoid this manga like the plague.
Hope you enjoyed my rant!
What if your future wasn’t yours? What if you were promised to someone else? What if that person wasn’t human? An old legend, a boy, and a girl. I won’t lie, the story disappointment me a little, I expected something a little darker in theme. The first few (20+) chapters will make you wonder if the summary is of the wrong manga. It isn’t dark, at all. It has so much potential to be but the characters and the lack of plot development make it fluffy and sweet, no difference from other manga except in the characters themselves being monsters and that adding a little salt to the sugarsweet mix.
Not to say that it is all predictable, not at all, you don’t really know what’s going to happen until you turn the page and see what new character flies in and tells you their motive, which they do instantly, most want the same thing. No good drama here. And the only reason it lacks any predictability is because there are so many random characters who so far (halfway through) serve no real purpose other than adding an extra chapter in an otherwise short manga.
It was hard to even take this manga seriously. Hopefully that was the design of it. Example one, random dialogue..
-“Have you heard the rumor about sensei?”
-“Rumor?”
-”Yup, although he looks like a cute little boy, whenever he sees a girl who he thinks is not bad… he enlarges!”
-What enlarges?!”
And this is a perfect example of the humor you will see constantly on almost every page turn in Love Monster. It is perverted and everyone seems to be, either captivated by the heroine, or wants to hold her captive for lecherous purposes or because of her specialness.
That being said it gets better, it just takes a long, very long time for it to get there. More than halfway through. The ending chapter is what give this manga any justice and the 2D characters get depth. And the twist in the story makes it interesting and give it purpose, otherwise it's just recollections of the high school lives of monsters.
The chapters seem repetitive because the new “villain” is always after the same objective. To top it off the villains lack villainess, for those who don’t know villainess is that extra ingredient that makes and evil person (villain) evil.
There are four main characters but in reality there are far too many to name. They each add humor to the story, whether by words or by expressions. Some are smart, cute, funny and a very few are dark and secretive.
The heroine is a cliche and as dumb as a dead goldfish at times but it's part of her charm. Even though her power is so "magnificent" she is ALWAYS being saved by someone, preferably Kouro, the main guy of the story
Every few chapter, three or so, has a new characters introduced, which makes it hard to remember their names.
The art was cute nearly gorgeous at times. Hiyo is drawn to look like she a middle school-er but all is forgiven since her attitude reflects that of a young teenager. Everyone is drawn normally and added their animal characteristics, at times it looks like them cosplaying. It looks very well drawn when they use their power or when the characters morph in their monster self.
It sounds a little harsh but underneath it all the story is quite humorous and romantic. And if like me halfway through you are thinking, "Hey the only thing it needs are vampire.s"..wait for it.
The art was great and the premise, especially toward the end, was amazing. What I couldn't stand was the fact that the heroine was so mind-numbingly stupid and useless. Hiyo, even after discovering her powers, spends chapter after chapter being saved by people. Various powerful monsters fall in love with her simply because she's virtuous and nice (meaning: because she is the heroine) and don't seem to mind at all that she's so stupid that she needs to be pulled out of every little thing. Hiyo aside, I loved the other characters especially the background for her parents and their generationof monsters. It added a lot of depth, though it's a shame that the entire story had to revolve around someone so redundant.
I'm sorry, but this was just plain terrible. If you don't know me, you should know I usually write reviews with low ratings, because the other reviews are all the same (and because I like to rant). Having come suprisingly far, I still couldn't bring myself to finish it. Dont get me wrong, I'm a sucker shoujo romances, even if its terribly predictable. But this was just $%*@# The story itself is pretty much the same, if you don't count rape chapter (its at the beginning, if you want to know). I dont really have to tell you how bad that is. What put me off wasthe fact they just kept throwing random characters at you. 'Hey, do we have a ghost yet?' 'no' 'THEN NOW WE DO'
The art was pretty decent, I think all the sparkles makes you forget that rape thing for a while (I'll be honest, I did). But I found myself unable to tell some of the characters appart, and I had to google them sometimes.
Do I even need to tell you what I think about the characters?
Well, the overal enjoyment wasn't really there, I didnt really enjoy it. If you want glorified rape scenes, unreconisable characters, and a terrible night, this might be the manga for you.
Seriously, move along you're better off without this.
Alright ill start this review and by the end i hope you have made a decision on if your going to read it or not so here i go. ~Story~ I greatly enjoyed the story i thought at first it was a mediocre manga but when you get past the 5th chapter you really start to appriciate the deeper plot. it goes like this A girl transfers to a school in the middle of a forest and is immediatly taken to the "king" of the school, he tells her not to try to escape him an eventually begins to fall inlove with him as he trysto seduce her its rather intresting how much she and the main boy grow and then you go out from the just romance plot later and start to see a very deep and well thought out plot about this girls demonic self and that shes a rare demon and of couse that she serves a great perpose in saving the world so she ends up fixing it. I loved the plot
~Overall~
Usually i would go into the art and characters but im not going to with this one and just sum it up in the "overall" section so here we go.. The art was amazingly beautiful and had alot of unique characteristics while the characters grew and developed plus learned about eachother and themselves through the whole manga i loved that. Overall i would suggest it to all comedy/romance/fantasy/hot man/pretty girl lovers alike because it has abit of everything 10 all across
How this has gotten any positive reviews is completely beyond me. I honestly don't even know where to start in describing how terrible this was. I don't think I have the words... Wait, no, I'll start with the fact that it's essentially softcore rape porn for the first 5 chapters. Then I'll point out that the "heroine" of this story is an utterly dimwitted waste of ink. Absolutely one of the worst protagonists I've come across, and that's really saying something. She's not even the charming kind of stupid that is so common in shoujo. She's sexually assaulted countlesstimes in the first few chapters, yet she's perfectly peppy just moments afterward when someone feeds her lunch. She's locked away in a tower with a rapist, but she brushes it off as something she can just deal with later. The other characters are just as bad or worse. The main love interest is a kidnapper and rapist, yet somehow our "heroine" is still inexplicably drawn to him and eventually falls madly in love. The side characters are... god, I don't even know. I don't even know. I really just don't even know how this was published. The "jokes" aren't funny, the characters are completely unrelateable to anyone with a functioning brain, the plot is completely forced and not the least bit interesting... At first I wanted to think it was just some kind of satire that was completely flying over my head, but after skimming through to the end, I'm pretty sure it's just really, really, REALLY bad. BAD. Terrible. Atrocious. The only reason I'm not giving it a 1 is because the art is good, but not astounding or unique enough to earn it any more points.
And shame on anyone who calls this twisted horror story "cute".
Oh dear, where to start... A long, long time ago, back when the scanlations for this manga were still coming out, I used to love it. But re-reading it many years later with a more critical eye, Love Monster only stands out from the myriad of shoujo work through 3 aspects: self-insert fantasy, uneven pacing, and a rushed and strange ending. Let's take it one by one. Story - 4/10 You know how sometimes an interesting idea with lots of potential pops up? This could have been it, but Miyagi proved to not have the writing ability to expand the plot too much outside the broad strokesfrom the beginning. The biggest fault is probably the pacing, with certain arcs taking up surprisingly many chapters for the little content they offer. And, of course, most suffer from monster-of-the-week syndrome, except instead of monsters (well...they kind of are monsters), you have characters sexually/physically assaulting Hiyoko, then fawning over how perfect she is.
There are some aspects I would've liked to see more of, like the training and use of supernatural abilities, and the monster social hierarchy (which we see a glimpse of with the crow families). Unfortunately, every plot point that could be even remotely interesting is rushed through to make room for the forceful and unstable romance between the main couple. For me, the biggest "yikes" moment was in the first few chapters, when Kurou imprisons Hiyoko in his tower, then, to punish her for trying to escape, he rips her clothes off, ties her to the bathtub and forcefully fingers her while she keeps saying "no!". If that's not sexual assault, then I don't know what is. But, of course, this is a Z-grade shoujo so all of it is presented as romantic. I don't know why I kept reading after that; I probably hoped it'd have some bearing on the plot or characterization, but it's never mentioned again after it's over.
Characters - 3/10
Love Monster is guilty of introducing a ton of characters and not doing anything worthwhile with them. 90% of the time a male character is introduced, he falls in love with Hiyoko and tries to sexually assault her; if a female character is introduced, she will try to harm Hiyoko but eventually end up befriending her because of her "pure heart" (which is most likely airheadedness, but I digress).
Hiyoko is probably the blandest and most useless and annoying shoujo protagonist I've encountered since Kurumi from 'Haou Airen'. Aside from the first few chapters where she displays SOME agency of her own, she's the type of protagonist that things happen TO, otherwise crying, waiting to be rescued, and generally being pushed around between various factions without displaying any proactive qualities. Kurou isn't really any better, embodying the classic shoujo male MC trope of "tall, dark, abusive-because-of-LOVE, mysterious and handsome".
95% of the side characters remain mostly as they were introduced, personality-wise, save for their heel-turn moment of falling in love/friendship with Hiyoko. As a consequence, despite being more interesting than the main couple, they get very little screen time that doesn't tie in to Hiyoko somehow. I would've given this section a 2 if it weren't for Yuki, Gin, Haine, Shou, Maki, and Kurou's father - with the latter two being by far the most interesting characters in the manga.
Art - 5/10
Every character is either handsome or cute. Simple as that. Not an ugly or even average character to be seen. In an attempt to make the girls look even cuter, Miyagi dresses them up in frilly clothes so much that they end up resembling dolls more than humans (which is...fitting, considering their mental development). A particularly jarring example is Kurou's mother, and while her fashion sense is explained, her character still came across as an example of "trying too hard to shock and be original".
While pretty characters are normal and expected for shoujo, what I could not get past is how badly full body shots are done. The boys are significantly taller in order to make the girls look even more cute and dainty by comparison, but when Hiyoko and Kurou stand side by side it's like putting an elementary school student next to a college student. I'm not even exaggerating, the proportions really are that bad! Aside from that, there are only about 4 character templates, so everyone ends up looking quite same-y.
Enjoyment - 3/10
The first chapters were entertaining to read solely because the world building is interesting and the character interactions would make for a varsity-tier drinking game based on the number of times Hiyoko is sexually assaulted. But after that? Not even a so-bad-it's-good read. Boring, repetitive, and ultimately pointless. Hiyoko never grows a spine, Kurou is still an abusive asshole, everyone else may as well be dead, and who even cares about the main plot anymore.
Overall - 3/10
While the supernatural aspect is interesting, there is too little world building to make reading this worthwhile. The characters themselves could have been good, yet ultimately fell prey to cliches and lack of development in favor of a stale romance plot that's been done so many times before and brings nothing new to the table. I would advise avoiding this, especially given its length; there really is no point in investing the time to read 80+ chapters of such an all-around disappointing work. No, seriously, it's not even one of those so-bad-it's-good trashy stories.
Love Monster was about a girl who attends a monster school and the school president is in love with her for some reason. It's a love, comedy, drama series with decent action for a shoujo. Story 7/10: The story at times seemed a little hokey, the amount of times the main character was kidnapped/harassed was to the point of ridiculousness.. but overall it had nice twists and turns. Especially towards the end of the series, it became more serious and moved nicely. Art 7/10: The art was good, typical; big eyes, attractive men, small busty girls. Some of the male side characters were quite impressive (frommy female viewpoint..)
Character 8/10: Each character, less Hiyo's dad, was nicely developed and explained throughout the story. There wasn't a real "villian" but they were all likable.
Enjoyment 7/10: It was a nice enjoyable read, but nothing extraordinary.
Overall 7/10: I recommend it, at times I wasn't too keen on finishing, but overall it's a nice read, with humor, nice looks and cool monsters.. I did like how the mangaka would explain some of the different types of monsters on her sidenotes.. that was nice..
I just finished reading Love Monster (all in one day, am I beast or what?), and I found it very good. There's already a synopsis so I'm not going to write a summary of the series... so firstly, the synopsis attracted me to the manga because I love shoujos and smut and the storyline seemed interesting. The first six chapters or so were crap. It was just one attempted rape scene after another. This is why I knocked off two points of my rating. What kept me reading was the synopsis I read I guess, because I've never read a manga like this (a girl ina monster school) before and I liked the mangaka's idea. After the first 6 chapters it became dramatic and really really good. A deeper plot appeared and there was no sex anymore :) The main girl character also became way less helpless and less annoying too. It was as if it was a different manga. I think that the girl fell in love with the guy a tad bit too suddenly but that's about my only negative criticism.
(Very slight spoiler alert!)
Some people might say that the ending was too perfect for everyone and bordering on cliche. I didn't think that the ending was too cliche but I do think that the ending was very nicely perfect. I'm the type who loves reading happy endings though because they give me a warm and fuzzy feeling.
when i first started reading this I did not have any high expectations for this, and I'm pretty glad I didn't. Let's start with the Story. as I said I try not to expect much when it comes to the "smutty shojo" genre because rarely (sometimes but rarely) do I find one with a good plot. when I first started reading Love Monster I started thinking this one might be one of those rare one's but down the line i learned it was far from.the main character Hiyo is our typical heroine wants to help everyone cry baby type who gets into trouble and kurou is thetypical "hero" do anything for his girl save her from all situations. there are other characters but because in almost every 3 chapters someone comes along to fall in love with hiyo or try to break up their relationship there's to many to name. And yes that's basically the first 40+ chapters so you see why i'm dissapointed and then a secret hidden plot is announced but l suggest you not expect to much from this. The plot is at a lot of times confusing and it seems the author just pulled it out of her ass, and everytime there's something with potential she ends it to quickly. if you're looking for a smutty manga you can leave right now because there's very little smut in it at all. >:( but one good point this manga is very funny it always kept me laughing. 6/10
THE ART
the art was the saving grace to this manga every scene looked nothing short of great. There was always detailed background even if that place was only showed on one page. the only bad thing is that the male characters all looked alike which got confusing at times. (I believe there were so many male characters the mangaka couldn't think of anymore ideas) 8/10
CHARACTERS
As I said before there were a lot of characters which left little to no room for development. so If your reading this manga and a character annoys you they'll most likely annoy you to the end. 4/10
Enjoyment
honestly even after my rant I can still say I somewhat enjoyed it. If you're looking for a manga with the boy always protects girl no matter what or you want to have some laughs at a few perverted jokes then this manga might be for you. 6/10
OVERALL
Even though this story can get annoying or seriously confusing the one thing that kept it going was the romance (and humor) so adding the romance +plot+art+funnies i give it a fair 6/10
I totally loved this manga! I really dont have any words for it. When i read manga's I usually forget the title and everything and get it mixed up with a bunch of other mangas i've read but this one really cought my eye! When I finished it I was like "Wow! Now what do I do with my life?" I love one of those manga's where the girl is forced to marry someone who she doesn't like but eventually does fall in love with. If you liked Love Monster I recommend you read HanayomesamaWa 16-Sai. Great manga! ;D
I loved the story and everything but i feel like they ended it a little bit with unanswered questions! Now how am I supposed to know these things? I haven't forgotten! But overall I loved the storyline and artwork although I don't really like characters like Hiyo because they're so helpless that it's annoying! On the other hand I love characters like Tenma that are so devoted and only look at that person, you know? But it still bothers me because they don't even answer everything in the end..
OMG is this one of the most funniest mangas I've ever read! I thought I was going to crack a rib at one point. The way it started off actually felt like it was ripping of Rosario Vampire but then it turned Shojo quickly and the hot guy appeared, so you quickly forget that matter. It's definitely supernatural and definitely shares traits with the shounen series mentioned above but instead of boyish boob humor, it gets sexy in a girlie way. (Lots of shirts open...male shirts.) Heehee, that aside, the story is cute but simple, it won't tax your brain at any point and it'snot overly dramatic. It's light hearted and sexy, so if you want a nice pick-me-up between boyfriends I'd definitely recommend this series. Guys on the over hand might gag.
This manga is one of my favorites, it has a very good plot, all the characters have matching personalities, and the thing I liked most was the cute little animals such as her companion the crow, and later the bat. I think this manga has an outstanding quality, and has won the title of one of Ai-Chan's faves. The thing I dont like about this manga is when they go to the Chinese school (I believe that's the one) it gets some what boring. But after that the story picks up from there with vampires. There are not many things about this manga Idon't like, the benefits definitely out way the fees. Over all a very good manga I would recommend to all my friends.
Light porn is all i can say. The girl gets molested in almost every frame. its quite sad frankly. The ending was lame but w/e it was enjoyable and i can't say i didnt have fun reading it. Tho i cringed at some parts. Characters are rather shallow and dumb Art was okstory...to this day i still don't really get what the point of the story was. WELL i do but it doesn't seem worth remembering.
I say all this but i did read it to the end so i guess its worth reading for those who like this kind of thing.
Story - 8/10 This is a good "usual" romance manga for readers who never get tired of the same things. You know what I mean.. Like boy/girl falls for girl/boy in the start, something was promise during childhood, boy is popular and so on. The only unique thing here in this manga(for me) is that there are monsters in the school that the heroine is attending to or something like that.. It was a first for me. What I dislike about this is it's just the same thing with the previous manga s I've been reading. I can easily predict what will happen. I was kindaexpecting something more from this when I first saw it but sadly, it wasn't in any of my expectations. Anyway, I don't regret reading this.
Art - 8/10
Let's go here. First, when I first saw the picture posted here, I dislike it a bit and told myself not to read it because of the boys that was drew there. Good thing tho that I gave it a shot. I just then realize it that the art wasn't so bad. The thing is, sometimes, when they draw the male's body, it's so big that it's almost not fit. However, I somehow like how the author draw the females. It was nice and nothing strange like big head then normal body.
Character - 9/10
Kurou and other male supporters are the one who brought the score up by 2. I like each and every guy's personality in this manga. They never, not even once brought my expectations down. What I really dislike is this main heroine girl. Is it just me or in every chapter she's getting more flirty and flirty? I don't really mind if she's just flirting with Kurou but somehow it's not just like that. Another thing I hate about her is her naive-ness, lack of knowledge(I don't mean in exams, it's about what to decide when something comes.. except for the last part tho.) and other things regarding her brain. Except for those 2 things that I mentioned about her, I like the remaining parts about her.
Enjoyment - 9/10
Apart from some things that I dislike here, I really enjoyed this one. I cannot say more.:)
Overall - 8/10
Love Monster is an enjoyable, good and a-worth-reading manga. Some of you may like the things that I dislike so if that's the case, I'm sure when you read this you will like it very much. All there's left to do is try it.
Alright kids let's review the manga I have felt the most guilt over enjoying. I first read this manga when I was in middle school and decided to read it again as a freshman in college for nostalgia reasons. There might be some spoilers, but I'll try my best. To start off we have the heroine, Hiyo, the most static shojou character ever invented. Why do I say this? Because she is like every other stereotypical shojou heroine. She can't protect herself, has no common sense, cares for others on a scale of mass proportions, and is "not the prettiest girl around but boys still fallfor her like dominos". This manga is the biggest reverse harem ever created. Literally every boy falls for Hiyo and either tries to rape or molest her. Seriously, it feels like at least every few chapters Hiyo gets kidnapped, gets her clothes ripped off and gets fondled before Kurou comes to save her. Then she just completely gets over it and it's like none of those traumatic experiences ever happened~
Let's no even talk about how Kurou pretty much molests her when she firsts gets to the school. Eventually she falls in love with him which seems like a weird form of Stockholm syndrome. But it's ok because Hiyo's father promised Kurou that Hiyo could be his fiancee and also Hiyo asked Kurou to marry her when they were three so it's totally valid obviously! Not to mention he's pretty much been stalking her ever since then, but she saved his life so it's ok right. So pretty much this dude is obsessed with this girl he had a relationship with when he was 3 or 5 years old.
But on another note, this manga is very charming. I don't know if this is just the 12 year old girl in me trying to push its way through, but I did find it enjoyable to read again (minus the cringe-y parts). The way the mangaka draws Hiyo's funny expressions and the way she interacts with people is funny and entertaining, and the overall story is ok. Some of the characters are very lovable and in the end you find yourself routing for Hiyo and Kurou to have a happy ending.
And now I'm going to talk about the art. The art is really give or take. There are some very beautiful illustrated parts in this manga. The wings she depicts are stunning, and her landscape layout in the Western Campus is beautiful. But there are also some parts that will just make you go: "What the actual fuck?". The mangaka is notorious for drawing what are called "yaoi hands", hands that are so large they make you feel a wide range of discomfort. The proportions of the characters, the sizes of their bodies, and their height change constantly.
What I'm trying to say is, if you have a guilty pleasure for really stereotypical bad shojou with demon/monster characters in it like I do, you will probably really enjoy reading this manga, but if you are about an interesting female character who can handle herself, turn away now.
If you are interested in a cute rom-com manga with a hint of smut, then this manga is for you. It has an interesting story to it if you read further in, and it has some comedic moments as well. It may tend to get boring sometimes, but it pays off since all the characters that the heroine meet are all lovable in a way. Since it's a smut manga, it won't be a surprise to see the heroine in a sexy outfit or half-naked in most chapters. The down part, in my perspective, is the ending. For me, it was a bit anticlimactic andit seemed rush, but it ended in a good note so no complain there. Overall, I recommend this to anyone who's looking for a cute fantasty shoujo manga.
This was a guilty pleasure for me. I don't think it's that great of a manga, nor is it a great romance, but I enjoyed it. I think my first issue with this manga is at it's core the main characters. The girl is just very childish and can't do anything for herself, and I get that that's her thing, but I just don't enjoy stories when the characters are completely incompetent. The guy was also too possessive for me to like, I didn't like how much he forced onto her and didn't let her have any say on things. It just made for avery toxic relationship.
The plot was really good at the start, and with each new character(well at least most) it got more interesting. As the supporting cast was more interesting than the main two. At the end though the story deescalated and everything that the story was building up to kind of just felt average. It kind of felt like "wow, this is what I was waiting for." Also a lot of other sub plots were left unresolved which was a bit frustrating. This story definitely had a lot of potential, it just didn't have good enough main characters to carry it.
