Reviews for School Zone Girls
Back to MangaI don’t know why anyone hasn’t made this comparison already but this manga fells like a spiritual sucesor to nichijou but Yuri. Idk why but the comedic timing and ridiculousness of the skits really reminded me of it. Overall this is just a lovely yuri romcom, all the pairings are great and it isn’t at all trashy (in case y’all are worried about that) so i would recommend it to any serious Yuri fan that is looking for a good Yuri rom com. The art is great it has this slight emo feel to it and it just makes all the character designs better. I’m finally upto date and let me just tell ya this story is developing beautifully, at first I kinda only cared about the main relation but now I’m invested in all of them. This manga does an awesome job of keeping things fresh by switching up the characters we follow every few chapters, like I said at first i felt that was annoying but now i love all the characters and I’m happy no matter what characters are being highlighted.
A YouTuber named "hazel" made a video praising this manga, which made me want to read it for two reasons; 1) it's a funny yuri manga (duh), and 2) the chapter lengths. I firstly want to harp on the length of its chapters. The shorter ones originally drew me to it, because it meant that I could have a lot of good laughs in a short amount of time. It certainly lived up to that expectation. Ningiyau puts an immense amount of detail into all the characters' expressions, which makes for hilarious interactions and brings the characters to life, all done within a few pagesin the early chapters.
This doesn't last for long though. Sprinkled in between the various instances of Rei smothering Kei with affection, School Zone Girls' longer chapters change the mood instantly. The strained relationship between the twins, Tsubaki and Hinase Hiiragi, as well as the historied main pair, are the focal point for these longer, serious chapters. They remind the reader that while the humorous moments and crazy occurrences are the main part of this story, the characters' thoughts, feelings, and desires are the reason why those interactions happen in the first place, and make them just as important.
Moving off the chapter length, another reason I was drawn to this manga was, of course, the yuri aspect. I love romance anime/manga and, being bisexual and non-binary, I love queer romance even more. I loved Bloom Into You and Given, and after finishing those I wanted more, but a lot of yaoi/yuri work ends up being too horny and trashy. School Zone Girls is very rarely like that. There are two moments of fan service in a later story arc, but that is the extent of it, and those moments become forgettable when the story picks up right after that.
Rather than being one of those trashy works, the interactions are wholesome and funny, like the phenomenon of Rei going completely insane, annoying the easily irritable Kei. This manga mainly deals with the dynamics between two of its various characters, and perhaps one of the most funny duos consist of the chronic overthinker Fuji Matsuri and the hard-working Kishiya, who develop a friendship when Fuji does something "unforgivable” (spoiler alert: it’s not that serious).
In conclusion, this manga is great. I spent far too much time writing this so hopefully this ends up being helpful to potential new readers. I don't believe I would have found out about this work without that YouTuber "hazel," so please go check out their video on this also. I love this manga so much, I bought all three currently released volumes and I cannot wait for more chapters to come out!
If you’re like me and found this manga from a certain popular YouTube video, hoping to find a “normal yuri comedy”, I’m just here to reconfirm what you already knew: This is a normal yuri comedy— and a good one at that. Personally, I find this work to be best for casual reading– something mindless to flip through while waiting for a meeting to start or at the tail-end of a break when there’s nothing else to do. The episodic, lighthearted nature of the chapters means that it’s pretty easy to pick up whenever and wherever without much effort. Ningiyau’s clean and expressive visuals (Icannot overstate her mastery of the silly face) and punchy character writing add to the ease– in both respects, School Zone Girls wears its heart on its sleeve, so there’s never overly busy visuals or purple prose-y dialogue to digest if you’re looking for something relatively straightforward.
The shortness of each chapter (averaging 4-6 pages) and the constantly rotating cast means that if a premise or character dynamic doesn’t land for you, it’s not long before the manga switches gears again. Plus, no one joke or idea has enough time to overstay its welcome, keeping the manga from getting stale. While this constant jumping around can make the story seem kind of aimless or even vapid during longer binge reads, it’s a bit more digestible if the time between reads is spaced out and you’re not going through too many chapters at a time.
To just call this manga “just an episodic comedy” would be selling it short, however. Though it does take around 2-2.5 volumes to get there, around the tail-end of volume 2 / beginning of Volume 3, School Zone Girls really grows into its own, making more explicit the undercurrent of a serial character drama amidst the comedy. That is not to say that it loses its charm– the goofy expressions, questionable antics, and Class S style intimacy of the characters never goes away, but the explorations of the girls’ oftentimes maladaptive relationships to each other becomes surprisingly grounded. The manga is still being produced, so it's impossible to remark on any endings or draw conclusions about where things might be headed, but I’m very excited to see where this story ultimately ends up. Despite the maturation of the story over time, the comedic vision is uncompromised, and the manga remains as fun and bombastic and ridiculous as the first chapter. If you have a few minutes to spare, definitely check this one out.
yatsude is so cute.. i like this chara~ girls with hair with bangs are the best especially when she's angry with them kei-chan and her friends are so cute the story is very fun especially meeting them kei-chan makes the story even funnier I hope the manga gets an anime adaptation, it's definitely more interesting to follow the story and I can see that the anime version of Yatsude is definitely cuter than the manga version. I can't wait for this, so basically this manga is one of Yuri's manga which is very fun and lots of cute things can be found from the manga school zone
I read this manga from the youtuber hazel's video, as a lot of other reviewers have, and it absolutely lives up to the expectations I had going in. I don't read a lot of yuri/wlw manga in general since it's usually written for a male audience and it doesn't really feel like it's for me as a nonbinary queer fem, but school zone feels like it was written with people like me in mind. The standout part of the story for me is that each character somewhat represents a different wlw coming of age story. Each trope that the different sets of characters embody are incrediblyfamiliar to me and feel like experiences that I and my friends have gone through. It's exaggerated, of course, given the short length of the chapters and the medium, but it still carries an impressive amount of nuance.
The art also really helps both the nuance and the exaggeration. I'm ripping this point from hazel, but Ningiyau has such a mastery over expressions and it makes it so much fun to read. I get the same feeling from this manga's visuals as I do from Naruto, with the amount of just /stuff/ packed into each panel gives me this full, fuzzy buzzy feeling.
Above all, this manga is comfortable. Not in a feel-good slice of life way, because there are some parts of the story that are a little challenging, but it handles it's challenging material in a way that feels very down to earth and it feels good to read.
School zone. I got this manga recommended by a youtube video and it was the worst 91 chapters of my life. Story is simple girl likes a girl but cannot confess. Then it turns into a "funny manga" with every chapter being about a joke that the "gang" make fun of. I did not like the jokes. The plot could have been very cool, but no make it a funny manga that has to be funny every 3 second. Art. Nothing really to be said here. I mean yea they can have some weird faces but, it is nothing to burst out laughing about. Iguess the characters are unique, but if you have read a lot of manga you can see the stereotypes. And they do not change the stereotypes, they make them worse.
character, again its stereotypes. Black hair is dumb, white hair girl is dumb, the gyaru and other gyaru both dumb. The twins hate each other and whats so stupid is that the reason to why 1 twin hates the other is explained 85ish chapters into the manga. The same as "reason to continue" cannot happen because in chapter 87 it was explained why.
i did not like this manga. I thought it would be nice and enjoyable with some drama, but no it really blows. Already at the start u could see the watamote resemblance, PS (Watamote blows too) So hey if u liked watamote they u can enjoy these "funny jokes"
