Story A girl who's never made friends before and who has given up on people is suddenly befriended by the most charismatic, popular boy in school. Sure, it's very shoujo-ish, but it stands out because it's so well done. Standard "episodes" like The First Kiss and The Overnight Trip and The Interfering Playboy are treated with surprising originality and depth. It's also more mature, but the "smut" isn't gratuitous; it's refreshing reading a manga like this that isn't about the heroine accepting the hero's feelings but about the progression of their very real, romantic relationship. Early on, they start dating, and THAT'Sthe focus, not on all the obstacles in the way of them starting to date, as often happens (e.g. Hana Yori Dango).

Art

Beautiful art. The heroine is adorable--small,untidy, pretty, and awkward at times. The mangaka managed to convey her stubbornness and strength in her appearance. The hero is GORGEOUS. I often complain about male leads just not being good looking enough, but this guy was designed great. He's sparkly (the way only manga guys can be) and while he isn't muscle-bound, the mangaka managed to make him look like a sportsman, not another super-slim pretty boy you often see in these stories.

Character

The hero and heroine are what make me love this story so much. In stories like this, usually the heroine is timid and needs to be coaxed out of her shell. Here, she's unsociable, hot-tempered, and stubborn. She's also very straightforward and insightful when it comes to people. It's refreshing having a strong heroine like her, who isn't just adorable and afraid of people, and who also isn't always putting herself in stupid, embarrassing situations she needs to be rescued from by the hero. The guy I also really like; he's very popular and charming, but also very kind, and his feelings for the girl are in the open from the start.

Enjoyment

One of my favorites. I check all the time for updates. Every chapter so far has been a great read.

Overall

With regards to this particular, "loner girl" formula, my favorite. It's got just the right blend of comedy, depth, and smut.

Honestly, in my opinion this is one of the best romances out there. If you watched the anime already and liked it, please read this. Because compared to this, the anime is nothing. The story is about Mei Tachibana, a shy and introverted girl and her relationship with Yamato Kurosawa, a handsome and popular guy. That itself really is nothing new or exceptional. But it is really well made. You get to accompany the characters all the way to their graduation, further focusing on Tachibanas insecurities and developing their relationship further. But it doesn't stop there. You actually also get to see (and more than just aglimpse like in other stories, it actually spans over multiple volumes here) their lives after graduating. Going to college, following their dreams, with the struggles and insecurities of living apart from eachother / not being able to see eachother for days or even weeks, all up to the point where they start working (and get a truly beautiful happy ending).

I think the last volume takes place 8 (?) years after they met in volume 1. So you really get to see a LOT of development.

The part which makes it even better in my opinion is that you also get to see the development for the other couples (including even Yamatos brother), and considering Rin and Megumi, actually showing that sometimes things don't play out the way you want them too, and that love can sometimes also be damn painful. And even so, Megumi still got her happy ending which she damn well deserved.

"Isn't it sad to strangle yourself with your own hands?" WHY SAY I LOVE YOU IS SHAPING UP TO BE ONE OF THE BEST SHOUJO MANGA Years ago, I watched the anime Suki tte li na yo and was underwhelmed. It wasn't bad per se, but it was a rushed & easily forgettable anime. Its characters were interesting, but none were given enough time to be truly fleshed out, so they ended up falling flat. I read the manga to see if it was any better, but found the same thing and ended up dropping it after just a few chapters. On a whim, I pickedit up again, a couple of years after I dropped it, and it was entertaining enough that it held my interest. But then something happened. Or rather, a series of somethings. The series showed its maturity, its complexity, its depth, its beauty. It went from a normal Shoujo manga to something that focuses on something much larger than a girl and a guy and their love.

The romance is nearly a veil that hides the manga's true intentions - it's true goal in its storytelling. More than a story of romance, this is a story about characters and their struggles to overcome their own limitations.

The characters are absolutely, positively, the best thing about Suki tte li na yo. To start with, Mei, our protagonist, is a girl who distanced herself from others because it was easier to be alone. "You don't get hurt that way," was her belief. That in itself is relatable enough to many. However, this story is about Mei's personal growth, and part of that growth is her coming to realize how childish such a way of life is. The antagonists of the manga are believable, full of depth, and their motivations are also realistic. They are treated as more than just "big ol' meanies" out to get Mei, and they are not tossed aside and forgotten when their storyline is through. No, we also see them grow as people, but from the beginning they are shown to be people just as deserving of happiness as anyone else in the story. They are not "evil" because "lol, they're evil" but they are only the antagonists because what they want conflicts with Mei's growth and development.

The art is gorgeous. The art is no doubt Shoujo-y, but it's also unique. The characters are drawn so that they are easily distinguishable from other characters and there is never any confusion about which character is who (as sometimes happens in other manga, Shoujo and non-Shoujo alike).

One of my favorite things about Suki tte ii na yo is that it doesn't skirt over the issue of sex. Sex is talked about realistically and how all of the characters respond to sex (whether it's being spoken about or actually happening) is also realistically portrayed. This is not a manga where the characters take 40 chapters to kiss. No, kissing happens, sex happens, so be forewarned.

If you don't like Shoujo or romance manga at all, this manga is probably not for you, however, because it does still have same of the same typical Shoujo flare as other Shoujo. However, if you're willing to read a Shoujo manga that's executed extremely well, with realistic characters and character interaction, then you should definitely give Suki tte ii na yo a shot.

Might contain very light spoiler i first read this manga way back 2011 but dropped it after reading a few chapters. mainly because early on, they talk about sex all the time. having sex with different guys or different girls. and having this categorized as "smut" in a manga site i was reading it on, i thought this manga would be all about it. especially since Yamato would kiss Mei intensely everytime. it's just a matter of few more chapters before Mei gives in to Yamato. and they will have sex on every chapter after that. lol (my biggest mistake and i'm now guilty of thinkingof this manga that way)

Now I'm rekindling my relationship with manga and anime after several years of hibernating, I decided to pick this up after reading some great reviews. I couldn't be more glad that I did because Suki tte Ii na yo turned out to be the manga that I was looking for all this time.

Story 10

i could've given this a 9 because there was like a 1 or 2 chapters where i found boring but I couldn't demerit this manga since it was like 2am, i was speeding up my reading(to the point where i'm not understanding what i read anymore) and my eyes were so damn tired. I'm planning to reread those chapters.

That aside, what made this manga the one i was always looking for is... You know when you read a manga which has a great ending and you kinda wanna know what happens next after high school graduation or after started dating? You feel like there should've been more.. Suki tte Ii na yo showed us the struggle of finding a career, going to different universities, being in different circles, the pain of being not in each other's side all time, being tempted, and that pursuing dreams apart could put your communication and relationship in jeopardy.

Yes there were topics about sex in the early chapters but that was just a tiny portion of a bigger picture. and it has to be discussed for the proper character development of the parties involve.

Character 10

I am just amazed on how these characters were portrayed. They are all lovable though some of them you might hate at first... once their reasons were laid out you'll see where they were coming from and what turned them that way. you'll find yourself relating to the characters' experiences at some point. They are realistic. Each of them have flaws and was addressed by the mangaka. I mean you can't change your negative behavior right away but you can see in this manga how the characters managed their weakness and how they improve and change it into something positive.

Art 10

The art is impressive. It is consistently good throughout the whole series. Call me shallow or superficial but I mainly choose the manga i read based on the appearance of the characters. lol

Enjoyment 10

This manga gave me a roller coaster of emotions. you will laugh. you will cry. you will hate. lol really a good read. it is something that will make you smile after reading. especially if you're someone like me who likes binge-reading before sleeping. you'll will not sleep with a depressed heart instead you'll sleep happily because it is a happy ending.

Overall 10

Having said that i am a sucker for good art, am also kinda picky with synopsis. I can say this manga suits my taste perfectly.

I was introduced to this manga by my crush, so it's no wonder why I love this manga so much. However, there's so much more into why I love this manga and its story. Story - 9/10 The story is just beautiful. You've probably read the synopsis many times before and thought that this manga's story might be another one of those cheesy love stories--- well, that's where you're wrong. It's not your typical love story. You get to explore so much more such as each character's back story and you learn the simple lessons in life as you read. Art - 9/10 I was enthralled toread this manga because of its beautiful artwork. The artist really put her heart and soul into drawing the characters and scenery.

Character - 9/10

At one point when reading the manga, you might find yourself relating to one of the characters. It's good to be able to understand the character's feelings and emotions and it just goes to show that you can't always judge someone's choices without understanding their reasons.

Enjoyment - 10/10

This manga is one of my favorites. It has more deeper meaning to me, however, since my crush introduced this to me--- but I'm not gonna get into that :)

Overall - 9/10

What ever kind of manga genre you like, definitely give this one a read! It's a gorgeous piece of work.

In reality, this manga is definitely a unique. It's not your typical boy meets girl, girl falls for guy, girl chases guy, and so on. It's like, their differences are what brought them to love each other. The guy is popular, girl doesn't have friends at all. So this guy, kind of saves her from that loneliness. Enough of that though, I just remembered this is a REVIEW, not a SUMMARY, gosh. Okay. So I've read up until chapter 16. I gotta say, it really, I mean REALLY pulled me in. From the beginning. It made me yearn for more. It actually gives you thiswarm feeling whenever there is an emotional moment. Not too cheesy, not to dull. It's just the right, sweetness, tang, y'know? You can really tell what the person feels for another, and that is a factor that gives you even more warmness. Even though they are not lovey-dovey, you can really tell they love each other. It's just, words cant describe how my spine chills whenever the guy tells her 143, or when the girl gets all indirectly possessive. It's just what you can encounter in a relationship... with a few uncommon characters, and situations. So lets cut the crap already.

If you like manga with a heroine who isnt like the others, all 'kya! kya!', where they just want to find a guy, and live happily ever after or where the guy isnt the silent type, but the friendly type and loves the girl with all his heart? Just a manga where you'll feel pain, love, and pure happiness. This is the one for you. :)

Say i Love you is the story about a girl who is anti social to the point that she has no friends because of a singular event that happened when she was 5 years old. First year of highschool she suddenly gets boyfriend. The story is about her coming out of her shell. Becoming more mellow gaining friends and self confidence throughout the series. Now even though this sounds good its just kinda boring. Now I liked the cute moments that came with the MMC and FMC but its just so boring. There is little build up. No tension. Things just happen. Now theseries is set over 10 years. the first 15 volumes being about high school, volume 16,17 being about college and 18 being post college. The thing was though it was actually confusing to keep up. Years would go by and it wouldn't really be explained at the same time the author would spend so much time over one thing you'd think there were still in first year. The only well written character in the series was Megu arguably the main heroine rival for the FMC. But she was easily the best to read about. She wants to the be the best model and the things she do and her pain that suffers through. She was literally the only reason i enjoyed the manga. There were other moments that involved other characters but like they were just far too few. Overall the story is pretty straightforward. Being about the cute moments of the Main characters and the side characters. However cuteness aside the series felt shallow. The only Character that wasn't shallow (hilariously) was Megu who's personality trait was being shallow. 6/10. Kind of a waste of talent from the author.

For people who judged this manga on how it was drawn, don't be mistaken because this manga has really nice elements. I really love Tachibana Mei. She' is so cool. Her character is the same as Kiri-chan in Beauty Pop (another interesting manga-RECOMMENDED). To make it brief, Mei lived in a environment full of discrimination, bullying and harassing. She decided to create a wall around here against other people because she believes people will just betray her at the end anyway. That was until he met Kurosawa , a really popular guy who was rumored to have kissed every girl in their school. Kurosawa tooka liking over Mei due to some incident.....

For girls who are looking forward to shoujo mangas as that contains love triangles. Well. here it is.......... =)))

First I would like to say that if you like Kimi no todoke you will absoulty enjoy this so recommend checking this out 100% Story: 8 you don't see many mangas out there these days that set out like this, and I think that it has come to be its main selling point. Mei Tachibana is very withdrawn from social standing and is regarded as the creepy girl you see floating around. She believes that there is no point in having friends because all they do is use and then dispose of you. Tachibana is bullied at school because she sticks out like a sore thumb, along shirt, short and rather ratty hair plus the unpleasant look she keeps on her face add upto the perfect target for just about anyone who knows they'll get away with bullying her. The most popular and cool guy in school Yamato Kurosawa takes interest in her and claims that they are now friends and soon to be more. This is something that I was particularly drawn to because of its realism and outspoken simplicity. It's unique and realistic romance and comedy add upto a fantastic story if you put in the time the read it.

Art: 9

I defiantly like the art. It's very cute and detailed and has a ruffled kinda look to it. The art really does add to the character and give it more value and depth. In a way it's like a new but familiar world filled with texture and shape and if I had the choice I wouldn't mind jumping right in .;)

Character: 9

I know you must get this a lot, but the characters in this are truly unique and you wouldn't find them anywhere else. Some quirky, some funny and others just loveabe.the characters are something that really drew me into the manga.

Enjoyment: 8

I have truly began to impers myself into this manga. Investing feelings and hopes will not go unrewarded and completing this series will not disappoint. I have truly started to fall in love with this manga because of it complexes about love and romance in real life. I strongly suggest reading the manga if your looking for a warming story that will keep to interested till the very end. They do say nothing ventured nothing gained so pick this one up next time you have the chance.

Happy reading ^^

I started reading this series a while back. At first, I felt a bit flustered that I was reading a romance novel, but the cover art attracted me into giving it a chance. It was cute and fluffy! How could you possibly say no to that? However, I started to read it, and I could no stop! I began obsessed with getting to the end without knowing that it's not complete yet! /All The Tears/ Yet, I go back and begin to notice that this story is a like bit for everyone. The girl who works hard to impress. The girl who has never felt love. The girl who is loved due to her appearance. The girl who is confident. The girl who is loved by someone out of her league. Every girl can relate to some part of this story.

It's told beautifully, and the art is gorgeous. Even though the story focuses more on Mei and her transformation, the reader can enjoy all the other stories that the main characters Mei and Yamato are intertwined too.

Overall, it's a gorgeous piece of work! And whether you're a fantasy reader or hardcore goru fan, maybe take a chance with this fluffy romance story?

It's really wonderful and a bit eye-opening.. So don't hesitate to give it a chance!

My Opinion: OMG. This Is My 4th Favorite Manga!!Its Halarious And I Love The Main Character. Usually Gloomy Liek Characters Aren't My Thing But This Mangaka Really Perfected this character. my favorite character has to be the main male lead. in the beginning you think he's this playboy and yet all he really was looking for was a "different" girl. Story:10 I Love The Idea Of The Story Like For example Having A Gloomy But Not Gothic or emo type Main Girl instead of the usual is a regular girl but is just average. The story is Mainly About A Girl (Gloomy) And A Guy (Spunky) JustGo through there love life in high school. it's not really drama filled like with alot of girls bullying her or girls trying to break them up (actually 1 girl tries). its just mainly about how themselves discover secrets, pass experiences, and regrets about there life.

I Really enjoyed it.

Art: 9

The Art Is Very Good. The Reason I Give It A 9 is because the way they describe the characters in words really isn't the same in the drawings. For example the girl Ms.Melons Who has big breast really isn't all that big in the drawings.

Character: 10!!(The Best Part Of The Story!!)

The Manga is Basically About The Characters Changing.

Like The Main Girl Who's Gloomy And Considered Not that cute. Becomes Different after she meets real friends. Because her perspective if people changed. Peoples perspective of her changed as well.

Every Single Character Changes! And They Change Very Good.

I Enjoy This So Much I Love it!!

But If This Review Sucked On Showing How Good No Outstanding This is Message Me And Tell Me PLEASE READ IT. YOU'LL DEFINITELY WON'T REGRET IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sukitte Ii na yo is one of my favorite shoujo manga and I think everyone should give it a try. It may be a shoujo but it's different and special in it's own way. Yes, there's your typical popular guy and timid girl relationship, love triangles and bully girls. But the mangaka manages to make the characters unique a complex, there are some great topics which are explored during the story (bullying, low self esteem, eating disorders, etc) and the artwork is great. Long story short, Sukitte Ii na yo is a lovely and heart warming manga, which you can easily relate to.

Story_10 is about a 16 year girl who is very exclusive of anyone or anything...due to friends betrayals and moving from time to time; and a boy who kindness allows her to feel what it means to be in love...a very outstanding story line with more than just a simple love story Art_10 the art i found to be unique in its own way...although there's not much going on in the back ground as for a scenery Character_9 are interesting...there realistic views speak for themselves..especially in today's society...feelings to overcome insecurity of self apperences..emotional feelings: what is love? Im i capable of being love?can someone love me? Stats, Peer pressure

Enjoyment_9 from chapter one 1 its beautiful

First and foremost, the art is absolutely gorgeous. The characters feel alive and like true individuals; there is never any confusion as to who is in the scene. But the art isn't the only good point-- the plot, while typically shoujo, is carried out in a way that makes it feel fresh. The characters' personalities are really brought out to support the story, so that every scene has it's own life, far beyond the traditional scopes of this type of shoujo. Naturally, Kurosawa is a very idealized guy, but I feel that Hazuki Kanae has done a good job of making him feel more 3D and lifelike. In a similar vein, Mei is easy to sympathize with, and isn't just a blushing princess.

Sukitte Ii na yo took me by surprise. The two main characters are complete opposites, and yet both completely endearing. Mei, who has not a good run of it - doesn't talk at school, doesn't trust people, doesn't want nor need friends. And the extremely handsome and extroverted Yamota, the most popular boy in the school. Who decides that Mei is interesting, and so pursues her. It is nice reading a story where the boy pursues the girl, and where he is not a stalkerish freak! It was refreshing! The art adds to this. It is a.. messy slightly off beat drawing style, which takessome getting used to, but which I ultimately really enjoy. It is also lacking in backgrounds, which actually works here, as the plot is so character driven.

I am enjoying this - although it has some gentle humour, I wouldn't call it *funny*, but it is romantic, and charming, and definitely worth a look

This is my very first manga review and im choosing to do it on the outstanding manga Suki tte Ii na yo(Say i love you in english!) I first started reading this because i enjoyed the anime adaption of it and thought i wonder if the manga is better, and while i enjoyed the anime, the manga i feel is better by a large margin, the characters are more likeable and their action are more understandable, and i totally enjoy the romance between mei and yamato a lot more, in the anime he is a bit of a jerk sometimes but its not as bad inthe manga, probably because he's much better developed here

The story gets more time thus it feels more genuine :)

this has jumped many manga to become my favorite and i cant wait to read the rest! :)

10 out of 10...... a real masterpiece :)

One of the best romance manga out there. It has no flaws in the story or the art. Probably the most realistic manga I have EVER read. This manga doesn't only tackle the problems one faces till they get a girlfriend, but also focuses on the misunderstandings they get while dating. It stretches itself a lot till marriage which is a first for me as in most of the romance manga that I have read, they start and end in the school itself, never to be seen yet again. It's as if there is no life outside school. Some mangas try a little different endingby giving a time skip, which is kind of infuriating. This manga really blew my mind. It had everything you can think about 'romance' and even more. As the manga follows more than a single couple, it can be a bit distracting but there were even more problems portrayed due to it. But, due to there being so many characters, the story progression felt very slow till about 70% of the manga is done and dusted. Normally, whenever new characters are introduced, it feels as if the new character is being used to develop the main characters only to be forgotten once their arc ends; this manga didn't do so. It gave all sorts of time a character needed to fully bring out their inner feelings and perspectives which is seen very less usually.

I am subtracting a point from the overall rating just because I feel that some of the other characters could use some more time. The start felt utterly slow and the ending felt very premiumly rushed. This doesn't change the fact that this manga is probably the best read you will get if you purely want to focus on the "rom-com" genre.

Conclusion: Do yourself a favor and go read this.

So a lot of people might feel like this is your typical awkward girl who gets the hottest guy manga at first glance. That's certainly what I was expecting, but I got something that was a lot more realistic than that. Mei is shy and quiet in a very realistic way. She has trouble making friends because it's hard for her to trust and open up to people for certain reasons. She meets Yamato and once they start spending time together, Mei's life starts changing in ways she didn't anticipate. What I liked about this story is that it developed just right, for the most part, and it felt very real. I think we all know a Mei or two, and this story might help us to see those like Mei in a different light. The friendships were nice to see. I would have loved more time in the sun for the side characters. The romance was also nice. It was a great first love type of thing that blossomed in a believable way.

Unfortunately, I think the story started to feel a little rushed and undone in spots around volume 12. As such, the end was nice, but not as satisfying as I expected with such a strong start. Overall, I think this is a pretty good series and I would recommend it to others looking for a good shojo series. Also,I loved the mangaka's afterwards. They're very thoughtful.

A lame, unpopular, awkward girl who suddenly starts caring about her appearance after meeting the "Rude Boy" & a hella hot, rude, popular guy, who becomes good boy no.1 after meeting the "Lame Girl". IT'S NOT THAT KIND OF STORY. Although the review might make it seem like that... Characters: Mei is awkward, unpoular, of course, but not in the typical shoujo sense. She is awkward becouse she is not like the others and that also leads to being unpopular. But she is surely not lame. At first, she doesn't give a damn about the people targeting her, but at the beggining of our story, she actually kicks themost popular guy in school, Kurosawa Yamato, because she mistakes him for on of her bullies. Also, she doesn't give up her morals after getting together with The Guy...

Yamato... hella hot, popular, but really far from being rude. Though don't except the "Kimi no Todoke" style protagonist, because he's not such a shy cutesy guy either. He actually HAS personality. Rare, isn't it?

Supporting chars:

You get to love all of them in the end, even the most annoying ones. They also have their own personalities. The mangaka did a good job.

Story:

You can guess they will end up together anyway, but it's not the kind of story that goes downhill after finally getting the two main chars together. Mei doesn't change her appearance just because of dating or liking Yamato, and our protagonist also doesn't change his cool personality after meeting his beloved.

Still, it's a shoujo manga, and it doesn't miss out real shoujo stuff. Though it changes it. It's like we're reading the same scenes we have already read in thousands of mangas before, all over again, from a different perspective.

Also, it's not that smut, so if you're expecting some airheaded "let's do it" story with "hot" scenes, like f.e. in Honey x Honey Drops (shame on me for even writing down its title..), it's probably not the best choice for you. It has it's own sex scenes, of course, but they are not disgusting or sweaty at all. They seem more natural. It's a manga with character development, with a common, but great storyline, and NOT a porn.

Art:

A bit different, but all in all a typical shoujo style. Although the guys seem much hotter and - maybe - manly, too.

If you like a clean style, without all that sparkly stuff, instead big eyed heroines, pretty supporting chars and hot boys, this manga was made for you.

Enjoyment:

I really enjoyed it and can't wait for the next chapter (40) to come out.

(sorry for my english i'm not native)

This is my favorite Shoujo romance manga of all. No competition at all. This has the best story and characters of any shoujo story I ever read, and I didn't expect much from it's cliche premise, but it went above and beyond. This took these very overused character tropes and made them something new, something worth reading. The story The best part of the story was that it didn't shy away from some difficult topics, and it remained very real through out the start to end. Especially looking into Megumi's arc which is bittersweet as you see her grow from her downfalls. The characters don'tneed unnecessary outside angst, because they're dealing with their own emotions and learning on how to healthily share that with their loved ones. I also like how things aren't resolved just because of kindness or friendship, but because they work to try and resolve it and sometimes the characters don't get what they want, because that's how life works.

Characters.

The characters are arguably the best thing about this manga. Even the supporting cast is enjoyable and multi dimensional. That is very rare in a shoujo manga to have the mangaka actually care about the other characters. Each character grows and evolves as the story progresses. No character is just thrown into the story just to further help the main couples relationship, they also have a life worth reading about. The anime is very good, but this is one of things you'll miss out from only watching it and that's the amazing characters in it.

The art

The art is really good, and you see the mangaka get better through out the chapters. It's a really cool transition and fun detail to notice as you read the manga.

Enjoyment.

I don't know how I can eloquently express just how much I love this manga and how much I wish I could reread it with a fresh mind just so I can fall in love al over again.

Overall.

It's the best. I love it, and when I can I'm going to buy it physically each volume because I'm obsessed.
