Reviews for Gal☆Cleaning!
Back to MangaIt's a fucking rollercoaster of emotions for all the wrong reasons. The plot itself is actually surprisingly interesting: the MC is forced to live with this spacey gal character, which sounds generic but the MC doesn't give a fuck about her and only cares about cleaning up the messes she makes in his house. The dude is just a master at cleaning his house. That's his thing. Entire chapters dedicated to "oh no, how do I get this juice stain out of my blouse?" and then him explaining the God-given blessing of lemon water and baking soda. He's the goddamn Sherlock Holmes of housekeeping. The mangais wholesome, informational as fuck and the MC is a massive chad.
Unfortunately the publishers announced they'd be axing the series after its conclusion due to low sales. This announcement occurred partway through the syndication and... uh, the mangaka had a fucking SEISMIC MELTDOWN at the news. There's literally no other way I can describe it. The ending of the manga goes off the fucking rails, driving the readers into the realm of LEGENDARY BAD.
You will notice that the MyAnimeList posting tells you the manga has 25 chapters. You will also notice that the manga itself only goes up to "Chapter 10." Why is this, you might ask.
The answer is because Chapter 8 is actually 15 chapters long. It starts at "Chapter 8" and ends on "Chapter 8.99." I'm not fucking with you. How do you prevent your manga from being cancelled? Easy, make it such that it never fucking ends, give us the Sexual Horror equivalent of Haruhi's Endless Eight. And yeah, throughout Chapter 8 we get to see the mangaka losing his goddamn mind in real-time, all while we're subjected to absolute storytelling ASS. As an experience, reading Gal Cleaning! Chapter 8 is like reading the entirety of Berserk's Golden Age Arc except every character is fucking Casca.
I had the absolute pleasure of witnessing this disaster as it unfolded in real-time, and I had a support group of some IRL friends to weaken the impact. It's the manga equivalent of watching a squirrel get run over by an 18-wheeler and staring at its dismembered lower-half, just waiting for it to stop twitching. There's just... nothing like it.
Thought I'd drop this review in case anyone has thought about picking up this manga, but hasn't seen the recent shitstorm over the raw that just got released. But basically don't touch this manga unless you want to get invested for a short while just to get shit on in the most asinine way possible. I think this manga had some nice potential in the oncoming gyaru genre storm. It was kinda cute, had an interesting spin with cleaning tips involved, and seemed like it was only supposed to get better from here. However for some reason the author went off the deep-end and thought"What's the fastest way to lose my fanbase while simultaneously getting closer to my series being axed? Bad chapter count and rape seem alright to me."
After chapter 8, the count turns into such a shitstorm that you'll probably be wondering how many chapters you've even progressed. It gets progressively worse and worse with each chapter as it starts to go into numbers like "8.91" and "8.93." I don't think that annoys me as much as how bad the chapters were. I didn't really mind the fanservice that much until it started getting more and more ridiculous as it went on. When you finally think "is the side-story over now?" you randomly get hit with one of the worst chapters of manga I've ever seen. This shit wouldn't even be decent quality if it was a doujinshi.
A side character you barely know that much about just randomly flashbacks into a full on rape scene where she is smacked across the head and put down by two delinquent students that start stripping her and licking her body. The chapter ends with her saying "someone please... make my body clean again!" with the MC sprinting to the class.
Yeah I'm gonna need some cleaning myself, for my fucking eyes that is. I think comparing it to doujinshi might be a bit of an insult cause I don't even think doujin writing is on the same tier as this. I don't mind scenes like this if they're done tastefully or at least add some kind of narrative to the story, but this was so far out of left field that I began to wonder if the author just had a stroke while writing this or if he wanted to pick up traction with controversy. I guess at the very least it killed my sides with how bad it was, but don't pick up this manga. If you've somehow read it to chapter 8 but haven't caught up, pretend like it ends there. I have no idea how this manga will ever recover from this if it magically does not get axed. This shit was a complete comedic and story trainwreck. Read some other gyaru manga instead.
Edit: Unsurprisingly this series has been axed now, so if you were hoping to somehow get amnesia and forget the rape scene so you could go back to enjoying a cute gal manga then you're outta luck. At least this all made for one goofy ass meme of a manga huh?
This is your average comedy romance manga where the guy is shy, serious, neat and the girl is popular, pretty and a total mess. Nothing new here, the story is fair and predictable. There is some originality in the comedy whenever the guy ends up cleaning up the girl's place because these situations are explained as if it was a wiki lesson 101 "How to clean this stain". I'm not sure if those methods explained even work in real life, but it's kind of refreshing. So where does it fail? Well with the second last chapter... Everything fails terrible in there. It is so fucked upthat I wonder if the author was still the same or if he didn't want to sabotage his own work for no reason...
Throughout the whole manga, everything follows the same path which is perfectly fine (if you don't expect anything but just your average romance comedy manga). But no... For the second last chapter, how about reading some intense rape scene that goes way too far (there is no penetration, but you can still get your dose of licks and stuff). What the heck happened... This is completely unrelated to Gal Cleaning... as if the author wanted to try out his Hentai skills before becoming a Hentai author. It could be a 7 or even 8. But no, it will stay at 5.
A review? I'm honestly trying to think of a way to describe how big of an utter funk up this manga is. I know the guide tells us to not comment on other reviewers but the other guy pretty much explained how bad this is. I'm just here to back that up and give my own opinion. This ain't it chief. Plain and simple. If you're into this particular genre, even more so the gyaru trend, believe me, there are far better mangas than this abomination. Example: Gal Gohan or Sono Kisekae Ningyou wa Koi wo Suru. I'd like to believe we read these wish-fulfillment stories because ofhow laid back and chill they are. Since, even though I love them, I see no other point in them. This author tried to change it up in such a bad way it was a resounding "what the funk" just happened? To everyone that read it.
Just do yourself a favor and ignore this train wreck. Or, if you're curious, don't be surprised to break your neck with how far out of left field the "event" that ruined the manga comes out of.
the first 8 chapters are quite the story, the first 7 are probably the most wholesome gyaru manga i have ever seen. setting the Student Council's Memories aside, its a rom com. if you're reading this you know what a rom com is. im not going to get into chapter 8's "controversial" topic because, 1: the manga is still going, after the manga ends there will be a proper review since i personally dont consider the student council's memory part of this manga. it seems like it was set as a shock factor to attract attention. there was no previous story nor anything related towhat happened to the Student Council President therefore that is how I perceive that part of the chapter. but i will go in depth once the MANGA is finished. other than that, everything else is good or otherwise beyond average. characters, art, enjoyment overall, story, they are all between those two. pretty much, its a good rom com and me liking gyaru is hitting the spot but the author does not seem to like his own work for some reason.
I will be completely honest with you here. I don't write reviews at all, so actually writing one now is a step in a direction i don't normally take. You might have also looked at my list and only seen relatively bad scores or out of the ordinary good scores but that is because i only do these things, like rating a series, and go to these efforts if I actually want to say something about it or think the actual score of a series is unjustified. And yes, in my eyes, everything above 5.00 is highly unjustified, even if by MAL standards this alreadymeans that the manga itself is un-enjoyable or only caters to a very specific niche of fans who would enjoy it.
Without further deviating from the point i am actually trying to make:
If you came for the Comedy, Echhi and Romance, leave right now and don't come back. What started out as a genuine nice experience on the side with a few cleaning tips turned into a parody of itself that if taken even a bit serious will leave you absolutely repulsed. The "Extra Chapters" After 8 with weird numbering like 8.93 etc. ruin the entire established story.
The first few extra chapters are actually just kind of annoying and some even might find them enjoyable but the last three (as of writing this review) diminish the entire score of this manga to a 1/10.
I can only substantiate the quality drop by thinking that the author treated his own series this way because he wanted to generate controversy to have some false sense of popularity. It might have worked on r/manga for the very first release of an extra volume but looking at actual numbers, like readership count, makes it clear that it certainly backfired.
To explain what the mangaka did: He basically set up this relatively nice story about a cleaning freak moving in with a "gyaru" who did not clean her house for apparently months. It's not that enticing as a story but it was nice enough to read on the side whenever it popped up to unwind a bit and I believe that many readers, including me, read it for that. This genre, if you want to call it that, of light hearted banter and cleaning tips completely gets destroyed by the extra chapters in which the author decides to casually introduce some very heavy themes, like full on sexual assault, on the side and plays it off as some kind of sick joke. "Make my Body clean again" apparently was the punchline. It not only betrayed the story itself but the readers who actually enjoyed the material and wanted to find out where it was going.
Now after, apparently, the last chapter of the extra series, the author said that it would return to the normal themes but all the people who started reading this manga for what it was are gone and upset, while some, like me, like the idiot I apparently am, stuck around to see how bad it would actually get.
This manga is a very bad overall experience. What started out relatively enjoyable, while not great, turned into a complete mess, which people only still follow because it sometimes turns up on r/manga and the dumpsterfire that it became is burning too hot to look away.
If I had to turn this manga into a metaphor i would say that it's like a friend who you enjoyed hanging out with from time to time but all the good memories you got with them got completely obliterated because he decided to murder your dog and hang it's entrails on your bedroom wall because he wanted to be popular.
I liked this manga, which is why I am so upset. Don't read it if you want to have a good time. Do something meaningful with your life, so you don't turn into a hateful, rambling idiot like me.
DISCLAIMER: This manga is not what it looks like after chapter 8.94! If you have found this manga without knowing anything about it and you are interested in it because of the summary you have read, genres or something else, then oh boy are you going in blind! Gal Cleaning is a manga about gals and a boy (named Daisuke Kaji) who knows a hell of a lot about cleaning. Kaji is forced, by a certain event, to live with the main gal of the story. He is treated like a "slave" and every chapter has it's unique and cool little tips about cleaning, thatare pretty clever and helpful in real life. And with the chapters rolling I started enjoing this manga more and more. The story is nothing that special, but if you are searching for a manga that has some ecchi elements, some humour and stress-relieving vibes, then this basic comedy/romance manga is for you! Yes it has some dumb things every second gal sentence, yes there are some plot holes here and there but that is to be expected of a short romance manga like that.
OOOOR that's what I was going to say if it wasn't for the mental breakdown of the story at halfway through! This story really had quite the potential to become some really enjoyable and happy ecchi/romance/comedy/school manga but it turned out to be more like ecchi/romance/comedy/school/drama/psychological .
And after some chapters everything returns to normal. Like, the author had some serious issues at some point and after his medication he returned back to normal and finished his work with the expected ending of such a title.
OVERALL: This was a project gone wrong
imagine this got axed after chapter like 8 and it will be a nice albeit short manga about cleaning with nice characters, the only reason this went to shit is cause the author threw a massive tantrum after getting axed and spent approximately half a year giving us absolute garbage, do not read past chapter 8 really, it is absolute trash which is poetically fitting for like a manga that was ostensibly about cleaning the story itself is alright, basic boy who looks very generic, if you've ever seen amano san is full of openings it's functionally the same character model, the art is the onlysaving grace of the manga past chapter 8, it is simplistic but has its own charm, the art for the main female lead is especially charming and looks like what an actual gyaru would look like funnily enough unlike most of the gyaru themed manga we see nowadays.
Once again a lesson is learned to not blindly trust MAL ratings. This is currently the 3rd worst rated manga on MAL. Knowing the first two, I expected this to be amazingly horrible, but I'm surprised that I can say it's actually not bad. Now, most of this manga is exactly as advertised - there is gyaru, and there is cleaning. The content is what could be called wholesome and the fanservice is nicely done. The concept is also something that doesn't feel generic right from the start and with that together this is a nice relaxing read. This is where the chapter that startedthe lynch mob comes into play and honestly I fail to see how it's supposed to make the manga horrible. Was it unexpected? Yes. Did it still fit with the overall theme? Also yes. I'd even go as far as to say that it's a clever way to apply the concept of the manga to the next level. A cleansing not only in physical sense, but also on a spiritual level. This is like the Goblin Slayer outrage again, but even worse/more unfair. There are plenty of manga way more fucked up shit (and with plenty of fans too), but this is what you sneer at? Because the author dared to make something unexpected and non-generic, it deserves a dedicated hatewagon? Nah, that's just your weak attitude and fabricated outrage to go with the crowd.
If there's any reason why I didn't rate this manga higher it's because the previously mentioned alternative take on the concept didn't get that much expanded upon and the ending was pretty much non-conclusive. With more chapters, this could have been better.
And no, it wasn't axed.
This manga WAS good. It HAD potential. it had an interesting premiss that could be entertaining. It was at least entertaining for me. The length was short and sweet. the sexy scenes weren't to obscene with it just having skimpy clothing and pantie shots. but it quickly goes down hill near the second half of the manga. skip down if you want to skip all of the review stuff. Lets talk about all of the boring stuff to get it out of the way. The story was fine and was short and sweet. done ill talk about it later. the art is fine. It hadnice background art near the beginning with shots of the messy room. the fan service was nice. but there was an extreme lack of detail in the character designs.
the characters are pretty basic. with a walking talking virgin trope, and a gal trope. not really that special. and the side characters are basically non existent.
i enjoyed this series for the most part. until the mid point.
In the middle of the series from what I heard sales were going low for the manga author, so he tried to end it with a BANG. but feel on his face.
he made it so the main girl has no panties on for the majority of the school day, then gets locked in a locker with the main boy and they basically accidentally make out. unfortunately the student counsel president sees this and starts thinking about the boy.
for some reason there is a borderline, no not even that, basically hentai scene where the student president gets gang raped by a couple of bullies. this happens out of no where.
it could have ben better. rip
tl;dr: A manga that’s really good when it’s simply a light hearted comedy, but that becomes complete trash when it randomly gets dark after which as expected it gets promptly axed. Up to a point, this manga is a really solid lighthearted comedy. There are only two characters, but they’re both pretty amusing and have good chemistry so its enjoyable to read about their antics. The random tidbits about cleaning effectively are also interesting. There’s a sort of ending in chapter 8 that while not that deep is a bit heartwarming. Without a doubt the manga should have ended there. After that it doesn’t immediately get terrible, but the plot line following that introduces a new character for whom it immediately switches into a flashback that just ruins the manga. Said flashback isn’t the worst thing in the world and it wouldn’t be an issue in other manga, but it absolutely did not fit here at all. The flashback is tonally completely inconsistent with the rest of the manga in that it gets really dark. This is critical because the light hearted tone and atmosphere of the manga were a big part of what made it so good and the dramatic shift to darker content is not just completely worthless in terms of what gives value to the manga, but it also makes it impossible to bring back the lightheartedness, and furthermore casts a shade on everything up to that point in such a way that in hindsight it just doesn’t seem as good. The flashback also makes absolutely no sense whatsoever in terms of the way characters behave considering such an event happened. The flashback is also completely pointless because it's only a flashback for a character that is completely unimportant, in that it goes into their flashback immediately after they were introduced, but the manga was axed no doubt due to the fans disliking the flashback, and thus said new character never did anything of importance. Thus, it makes absolutely no sense why the flashback exists.
Some believe that the author was simply trolling the readers or that his manga had already been scheduled to be cancelled so he was taking out his frustration on the manga. That doesn’t really make sense though, because while there isn’t much after it, the story does continue after the flashback, at which point it seems to try to pivot back to trying to have an actual solid ending relating to the plot before the flashback. Now, that’s completely impossible because there’s no coming back from that level of garbage fire and hence there wasn’t really any sort of way to salvage even a reasonably satisfying ending. But that the author at least tried to do that makes it likely that the whole thing was simply them making a major mistake in thinking that taking the manga in that direction was okay, which is even more flabbergasting then them trying to screw things up intentionally. Honestly, it just feels like a terrible waste, because the manga was quite enjoyable until it screwed up and I would have loved to see it continuing in the previous fashion. Furthermore, this will likely be toxic for the author as well, which is sad because he clearly is able to create a competent manga based on how this manga began, and furthermore I really liked his art and thought he was incredibly good at making a simple art style look really nice.
This manga is really hard to rate because most of the manga is really good but when it gets bad its really bad. Still, the manga stops right after it gets bad so it's not like there’s a lot of it. If you stop at chapter 8, which encompasses the majority of the manga, it’s a solid read. But after that it's more like a 1.
This is going to be tough to beat for the position of worst manga I've ever read. What rollercoaster of trash this manga is, and it only gets worse as it goes. We start with 8 chapters of cringe tier ecchi romcom slice of life story telling, which wouldn't have gotten this manga close to being the worst I've ever read if it had only remained that, but then we reach the infamous decimal chapters as they are known, and let's be honest, these chapters are the only reason most people ever discovered this manga, myself included. Here we are treated to a miniarc of the main girl wandering around school without her panties because funny I guess. This isn't quite where the manga jumps the shark, while a little different from the previous chapters it still maintains a lighthearted and comedic tone; by the end of the mini arc which painfully overstays its welcome we finally reach the point where the manga doesn't simply jump the shark, it grabs it and judo throw it into the sun.
For some reason beyond my understanding the mangaka decided that his ecchi slice of life romcom needed a several chapter long rape flashback scene and so that is what he put in, it might be the most tonally jarring and narratively incomprehensible story beat I've had the misfortune of bearing witness to. After it's over we get an incredibly anti climactic ending this gives zero closure to anything save the love triangle introduced right there in those very chapters, the main characters relationships remain as they have been since chapter 1 and you, the reader, realize that you wasted time reading this manga that you will never get back.
It started off pretty happy with some comedy. High school protag who's name no one can get right helps this GAL in his class by cleaning her house and stuff. He says he dislikes GALs and ends up being okay with this one... but then at chapter 8.##. We get stuck in this endless loop of never getting to 9. And as we progressed, there was landmine that none of us saw coming... What was it? Well it turned out to be revenge rape and it was REALLY out of left field... Like SUPER out of left field. The rape lasted for like .03 chapters (Wenever got to 9 mind you).
I'm chocking this up as a complete and checking back a year later to see if it is still going on... In short series was okay with man clean gal's house and teaches us how to clean.
I give it a 4 overall. (After 8.97)
I started this manga because I wanted to read a wholesome gyaru manga and at first glance I thought, "Well this looks cute, guess I'll try it." But man when I was done... well, I'll get to that shortly. It starts of as this kind of cliche gyaru/love (?) story manga, but the helped the girl cleaning her room and I thought that was weirdly wholesome in a way and that it was cute that the guy explained how you could clean efficiently or whatever. But man... there was this one turning point which was... well, lets just say the author had either mental problems orgot just really high on drugs and wrote the script for the chapter before he passed out with foam in front of his mouth and got delivered into the hospital. Nevertheless, it really is an experience and it's just 25 chapters, so if you want a fucked up ride, or you have a crisis and you think that all the manga you read feel generic and all the same, then you might as well just read this to remind you that there's always worse.
Gal☆Cleaning! is a comedy romance manga about a young man who runs a cleaning service while in high school. After cleaning a particularly bad room for his classmate, he soon learns his family is evicted from his apartment and he has to move in with the slob classmate. A fairly simple premise, that can only exist in a comedy romance manga. I read this expecting the 10 chapter manga to be 10 chapters long. It is not. They hit you with the Chapter 8.5. It's short and simple. Then 8.6. 8.7. Chapter 8.8 and 8.9. Then, Chapter 8.91. All the way to Chapter 8.99. And reallythe entirety of Chapter 8, with all of its added bonus chapters is insane. A figurative neck snap to readers. I really can't say anymore, you have to read Gal☆Cleaning! yourself to truly understand what I mean. It is the Neon Genesis Evangelion of Cleaning based gyaru manga.
"Meh" is the best way I can think to describe this manga. I started reading it after I heard how it goes "dark" after getting axed. Then I read the first chapter and actually liked the characters and felt afraid for their sake... just to be disappointed on both ends. While it's true the "event" added unneeded drama to a comfy manga, it also wasn't enough of a big deal to really matter. Can't trust mobs nowadays I guess... Like, by the way people were talking about it, I was certain some fucked up shit was going to happen to one of the main characters, butit was just a random one-off character that showed up out of nowhere having a flashback showing some bad stuff happening to her. Boo-fucking-hoo.
I was hoping to feel something and left disappointed. I liked the SoL but was also kinda disappointed by having it become some random drama at the end. Yet, the early chapters were still fun. Shame it got axed.
People have been giving this series plenty of flak lately. Undeserved flak, in my opinion. The series does indeed go to shit after a while, but it’s not nearly as much of a train wreck as people make it out to be. I’ll give the series the vague explanation a forgettable series like it deserves: the premise starts off rather simple, playing on the recent trend of loner guy meets shameless gal. Our MC is extremely standard, easily excitable and introverted. The “shameless gal” of the story is also extremely typical. They’re forced to live together through some turn of events and the MC learnsto deal with her airhead shenanigans. Basically, if you enjoy this type of pairing at a generic level, you’ll find some enjoyment in at least the first half of this series. Halfway through, things get kind of weird. A second love interest is introduced, given an arc totally out of left field, is immediately cast aside, and then the story ends abruptly. It very much seems like the author stopped caring.
Honestly, it’s a redeeming point that this series, unlike others of its kind, doesn’t drag on forever with no end in sight. At the very least, it will make a decent quick read for those interested in the gyaru x nerd pairing. As long as you go into it with no expectations other than that, this is a filler manga that will hold you while you can’t find anything else worth reading.
(This is assuming it’s over. I actually don’t know if it is. Apparently, no one else does either)
(TLDR below, thanks for reading) I went into Gal Cleaning only because it had a low score, I was just on the lookout for something actually bad. If you already know my views on anything very lowly rated, you'd know that I don't actually find such media to be as bad as the score say it is. Sometimes with a mean score of 3.XX only shouts 6.XX or higher to me. Gal Cleaning was no exception, if anything, it is very misunderstood. The story plays off as a normal generic cliche, in both story and characters, only based around a dude and a gyaru in their mischievoustime together, synopsis will explain the rest. Nothing too out of the ordinary happens and for the most part, this is done well. I would usually check off stories like these with 6/10 and talk about the next category. But with one particular Gal Cleaning took it to the next level, I won't say what happens, but you will more than likely not see something shift this much in the narrative so much for a good long while. It is the only reason why this manga is rated so low, but it isn't bad. This is kinda like what happened with the AOT ending reaction. In any case, I saw this and thought that it was actually realistic to the world around itself, pay attention to what Kaji says in ch 3 and you will see what I mean. Whether that was a coincidence or intentional is something I don't know, but it was actually fitting regardless. Another, more accurate reason why such an event occurred was something I got out of talking to someone else about it, about how the cleaning is not only physical but also spiritual, though I think it is more mental in my opinion. In any case, it is quite the pretty cool idea snuck into this that I didn't even think of myself, makes you think that pretty much anything can have symbolism. It's really apt in such a case and makes for something you will probably remember because of what it does, whether for wrong or right reasons. Good stuff.
The art is fine, it is pretty much like every comedy manga with no individual style to it. Is there really a point in elaborating here then? Moving on.
I enjoyed this, I find it hard to not enjoy stuff, good or bad, there is a reason to like everything, though some series don't meet a basic standard which means it is impossible to appreciate fully. Gal Cleaning was not one of them. I can't really say I understand why people (if even rationally) dislike this. That one arc in itself isn't enough to pull down the enjoyment if I am honest, it was quite a change though, that is true. Still, this was a fun manga that was also quite clever in its own universe. Also, I must add how the arc just before the one that "brings everything down" is super funny, I found myself laughing more than I should, and I don't really have any idea why, it was just funny. Everything that isn't the hated part is also quite enjoyable, wholesome, and somewhat relaxing. Everything a manga like so needs to at the least keep you attached.
TLDR: A fun manga that has one section which is incredibly misunderstood.

Ermm, can I even recommend this one? Probably not, but it is there for most open-minded people, I would suggest looking a little deep into it, even if it does look a little cliche. What a story though, you wouldn't have guessed something this simple-looking could offend so many people. Hell, I thought this was disliked because people didn't like gyaru characters, before I read this that was. Well, nothing more to add, just another bottom 100 manga that needs defending.
