Reviews for The Friends-Eater Classroom
Back to MangaTomogui Kyoshitsu is... bad. I was looking for another word to describe it but that's the only thing I think of when remembering how reading this manga felt like. The story? Nonsensical, cliched for the genre (what is up with the 'king's game'-like manga, anyway?) and absolutely disgusting. This is coming from someone who enjoys gore. I'm trying not to spoil it much, but there was NO NEED whatsoever for certain things to happen to the female characters. It wasn't done in a decent or meaningul manner and was clearly there to shock the reader and attempt to make the manga seem darker than it alreadyis.
The pacing is dreadful and all over the place. One chapter the characters go around talking to each other about nothing and in the next one so much happens that you can barely understand wtf is going on.
Art? It's okay. It seems like the poor artist who had to draw this mess didn't write the story at least. It was pretty average.
Characters? My god. They are awfully written and developed. The main lead has as much personality as a sack of potatoes, and guess what? For some reason everyone is in love with him! Almost every guy is a douchebag who may or may not end up sexually assaulting the female students and said girls' personality amounts to feeling jealously over one another or, you guessed it, liking a guy and thinking about said guy. That's what most of them amount to. Jesus christ.
My enjoyment was almost null if it wasn't for the fact that this is so, so bad, I had a bit of a laugh reading it. Who approved this? Which poor sods had to publish this? I felt sorry for them.
Overall, if you like enjoying things and having a good time reading manga, skip this immediately. If you're a poor soul who read this out of curiosity like me, then godspeed, my friend. Godspeed.
This manga here my friends is pure SHIT! I usually have easy going mind and always try to find something enjoyable, no matter how disgusting a story might become but this here, just broke my shit scale! 1. No character development. 2. Full of plot holes. 3. The world seems so unreal that even tho there was a killing the previous day, the school started out normally like it's pretty common for this kind of things to happen on school premises. It's not like they got transfer to some other world because there was shown a police response at one crime scene. 4. No Enjoyment whatsoever. My advice? Avoid this as much as possible.
This is a masterpiece!! It might not have belivable characters, or good art, or good fights, or a good Ending, but it is fun. There aren´t many works this bad that still take themself serious. If you like other fellow masterpieces like wakaliwoods bad black, or the Room, you will find some mayor fun in this. The pacing is very fast and the only thing that is objetivly amazing in this. The real best thing are the characters though. They go from "I want to kill myself" to "I will eat everyone" to "I want to sleep" in 3 panels. The level of unrealness, is unobtainablein other works of the same genre.
There is no reason not to read this now!
This manga is just....bad? There were so many unnecessary scenes that felt like they were added for shock value or something, in reality it just made the story suck. In my opinion the story was so rushed and boring, it's like the further you got there were more stupid 'plot twists' that got added last minute. Sort of as is there was no real idea as to where this story was going and stuff was added as it went on. Oh and another thing that happened a lot just as you feel like you're caught up on everything all of a sudden you get hitwith a characters dark past that somehow is only know affecting them because that totally makes sense. I don't know read it if you want but beware they ending really sucks and is predictable yet not really?
Friends-eater classroom is a complete mess of a manga. I would not recommend reading this at all. If you want to read it just because there are some gore scenes, skip it. There are other gore mangas that do it a lot better. (Spoiler free review) I was actually surprised to see that the manga subverted some expectations and had some twists to the usual clichés of the genre. I would have loved it a lot if the execution wasn't atrocious. The manga suffers from a weird pacing issue: even as the game progresses, you can't really sense a "progression" in the story. Characters behave the sameway in game 15 as they did in game 3, and their reactions (or their lack of) makes them feel so unrealistic that it alienates the reader. The artist does a decent job on the art department, but that's all there is to it. Characters have a pretty generic look and the gore is ok but not enough to make it worth the read.
I definitely don't recommend reading it. Skip this one.
If you're fine reading such themes : R*pe and sex cult, it's a safe to continue. Warning, this manga also contains: Cannibalism, non-explicit ped*, non-explicit animal torture. Here's my thought. TL;DR: Many dark themes but too rushed, predictable, zero development, weird romance, no emotion. The story itself isn't as unique as it is just another death game. But it's completely fine by me as long as it's enjoyable in the end. Yet, this manga isn't fulfilled my lowest expectations. I think it's nice to clarify that I'm not gonna against author's rights to build their fantasies into literature, I appreciate all of 'em (except Netorare, hehe) The story is toocliched. Foreshadow isn't function as a sign anymore but a huge spoiler, too predictable, which is a fatal mistake in building a suspenseful story. Even the author named every chapter's title as one of its spoilers. The pace is too rushed, no emotion you'll get towards character's death, character's past, and even the rape attempt feels hollow lack of hate. Some character's actions are meaningless. It's kinda realistic that the author tried to depict mostly into sexual desires in midst of panic instead of cult religion like it mostly done in most literature I've ever known. But still I can't think those reasoning. Desires in female characters got involved in sex cult are unconvincing and seems like too forced. Fact that the story is too rushed in 39 chapters supports my idea. And finally, the ending is super cheap and hard to relate to the actual main story.
Too much characters in only 39 chapters while they got no development at all. Yuki might be my best for her feeling towards protagonist, but that's all. The romance element is weird, character's personalities are all too fantasy.
The drawing is also weird. It's not bad but just weird while I love the book cover.
If you ask about my enjoyment. Yea, I surprisingly enjoyed this manga, but it's just because I just want to read something.
This is truly a manga that might disgust you a lot but you might still fall in love with this - as I did. Story: For starters, the plot wasn't progressing well and it seemed like ehh everyone is just getting themselves killed. I mean everything was just a mess but there was something that got me to continue reading. And if I might say, it was really a good decision! As the story goes on, there's more development. Characters started to find the reasons behind everything and that way the reader too got more information which is why you can't just stop reading this inthe midway!!
Art: The art is truly fantastic!! It supports the plot perfectly and makes the best versions of the characters. However, there are also some parts I might wouldn't want this art to show like there are a bit too nasty moments which make you feel like you're about to puke.
Characters: To be honest, there's way too many characters. But the development between certain characters is just amazing! It doesn't happen in the beginning but bit by bit they're getting better. On top of that there's also more information coming from the characters' backgrounds which helps the story to go on.
Enjoyment: I hate this manga, yet I love it. I guess you get what I mean? It's the kind of manga you just have to read, it disappoints you, it gets your hopes up, it gets you scared, it makes you angry. This gives the reader so many different feelings that it's definitely worth a try!
If you are not into horror and dark themes, this manga is not for you. On the other hand, if you like horror, dark themes and scary things, this manga might be just for you. This manga has it's ridicilous moments, and sometimes I don't even know whetever I should laugh or cry while I am reading it. It's true, that it has a lot of plot holes and scenes that just doesn't make any sense - at first, that is. But the more I read, the more I learn about the manga and it's twisted, terrifying world. You can't really tell where this manga is going, not until you have read like 10 or 15 chapters of it, at least I couldn't. But there was something into it that kept me in it's grasp and I couldn't stop reading until I read the last published chapter.
I can't wait to read more! I really, really need to know how it's going to end!!
Listen, I'mma be as nice as i possibly can. 1. I absolutely loath any depictions of animal abuse. And this... this was a new low. EXCUSE ME SIR! WHO ABUSED YOU AND MADE YOU THINK "Oh lets put a cat in a microwave and have my artist draw it." This artist gotta be hella underpaid, and is probably in therapy right now. I have tried so hard to ignore the ratings on the story, and give it a positive light, and it was a fair 6/10 until chapter 8. DEath games do shit to people. Whole studies have been done on the psychology of thesegames, and how they affect the mind.
now i will give one kahoot to the art. It's decent, i guess...
story is cliche and i bet it's the frickin' parents who knew about it, almost like a government set up game. yada yada. i want spoilers for how it ends...
*sigh* Artist, I wish you good mental health, as long as you were unaware of the contents before you began this project. However if you found no issue in the microwaved cat, I am greatly disappointed in bounds that surpass what i am allowed to say in MAL, otherwise, it's a rant. *smile*
The moral of the story: kids can be real cunts sometimes. I'm not sure if this was their goal but the manga definitely tried to include every possible depravity out there. It has sexual assault, prostitution, pedophilia, and oh yeah lots of cannibalism—in case the title didn't already give that away, yes, they do in fact eat each other. Aside from the cannibalism aspect, I'd say it has a very cliche high-school death game premise. If you've read Ousama Game, the structure of the games is pretty much the same but I think the sheer brutality and creativity of the challenges in this manga completely beatOusama Game. In both manga, you get the usual protagonist who is fairly popular, righteous, and deadset on basically saving everyone, which is really the standard male protagonist trope for these types of stories. But unlike in Ousama Game, this manga's ending isn't actually half bad. For me, it at least managed to tie up all loose ends and uncover all the mysteries. It wasn't the most satisfying ending for sure because let's face it every likable character dies and we're left with the bland protagonist, Shouta, but it did make sense in the end. I also enjoyed the creepy open-ended panel we're left with in the last chapter that really cements the horror aspect of this manga.
I've been hating on the protagonist a lot but I do appreciate how the story doesn't end with him going into a spiral of insanity where he suddenly becomes a pro at the game. While Shouta does get understandably depressed, he at least doesn't suddenly improve and start killing off people for his own benefit. It was actually a nice touch that he stayed upright and true to his beliefs until the end, and it was those same values that led him to uncover the truth about the game. While the manga is fast-paced and some of the characters are severely underdeveloped, the writing and plot were pretty consistent. From the beginning, we were already given a few hints that tied into the mystery of the game and that's exactly what made the ending so believable. There are a few scenes and side stories that seemed really unnecessary to the plot, like the sex cult and just a lot of the sexual assault that seemed to happen almost every other chapter. But disregarding those really horrific visuals, it's a decent read that you can easily breeze through in one sitting. There's a good chance you'll be traumatized and disturbed by the end of it, but I personally think it's entertaining enough.
The was a really good, albeit pulpy read! The story is a mix between Corpse Party and Dream Diary where the students are trapped in a school and given text messages on who should kill which person. By the end, it is found out to be orchestrated by the ghost of a little girl named Beniko Shoujo whose demented sense of fun caused by homelessness, rape, and abuse founded the rules of the "Friends-Eater Game." The story is very fast-paced, which works as a double-edged sword for the overall series. On one hand, the suspense never alleviates and makes for some disturbing Lord-of-the-Flies scenarios, but onthe other, many of the characters were underdeveloped, which lessened the severity for what was happening beyond its apparent shock value. The pace was especially felt after the last few chapters as the discovery towards the ending began to make leaps and bounds over what was previously accomplished over the past 35 chapters prior.
Would I recommend this? Of course! I was never one for popular horror, and so the media which takes inspiration from it (Corpse Party will always hold a special place in my heart) felt superseded by this new level of intensity. Also, while the subject of rape was used too wantonly, there was great representation of female characters in eccentric positions, such as the occult student, the sociopathic yandere, or the doomsday prepper in the audio visual room. This made the series both very fun and intense for me, which I would recommend to someone else if they were looking for this sort of thing.
Let me start off by saying this manga is not for everyone. There are so many things this manga has: -R*pe -P*dophilia -Lots of death -All around carnage My full rating for this a solid 9/10 The first chapter starts off as any other survival game horror manga would. Nothing thrown at you, YET. As the plot progresses in the first chapter, we meet our first game and first death. Now this method of death was insane. By far it was the most unique death I have seen in horror lately. It blew my mind. The story progresses at a nice pace. While it isn't the most perfect one, it isvery consistent. The game doesn't derail. The story doesn't automatically shift into this whole spectacle about the villain and who's to blame. The one thing that does change it is the last chapters where the last few survivors face against this new threat.
What the story does is continue off each chapter like a flowing river. There are no real hang ups. Each character gets a back story (not all, but once you read it, you'll understand). Then, at the end, the true mastermind is not what or who you expect. The one thing I truthfully can confirm is that the deaths truly pack a punch. Some are shocking, while some are more.. well deserved.
All in all, this is one manga that you should read if you can stomach dark themes.
Pros:
-Interesting characters/minor development
-No shortage of pulled punches
it's not the game you think it will be
-The art is pretty nice
Cons:
-The story kind of goes to sh*t in the last few chapters (except the last one)
-Characters feel bland at times
-The new threat felt too rushed and brought in way too late
-The explanation for certain things can be... annoying
-Definitely not the story for you if you can't handle dark themes
