Reviews for Rent-A-Girlfriend
Back to MangaMy first ever review on MAL, I decided to let it be for this manga because I would feel pretty damn guilty if I had not. Story: 4/10, I’m being generous here, since this has the Shounen tag and all, but overall nothing tasteful or worth noticing, and the story progresses in the most riduculous ways. Art: 6/10, this depends a lot on everyone’s taste, I think the girls are nicely drawn, details are good enough. I would have given a 7 if male characters other than the MC did not look like corrugated sketches that were disposed of by the editor. Character: 2/10. For me, astory cannot be good if the characters are not up to par. The reason I gave this double the score I should have, is solely because of Kibe. Calling the MC a piece of shit would be over-complimenting him, this guy makes Yuuki Rito and the senpai from Don’t Bully Me, Nagatoro look like the manliest characters on Earth. For a story and characters built around such an MC, how others managed to cope with his crap never fails to amaze me every chapter. Anyone with the least bit of self-esteem would find it impossible to relate to the MC in any way.
Enjoyment: 2/10. Only the art counts towards this, really.
Overall: 3/10. If you are the type of guy who would punch your best friend in the face for telling you to get over your ex - who everyone (including you) knows is a 2-faced bitch - then you might enjoy this manga.
I want to make a case for the protagonist, Kazuya Kinoshita. I analyzed his character and I wanted to share it with you guys: Kazuya is a heavily misunderstood protagonist. Hes actually peak writing. IMO hes the best written anime/manga, and he is above Joe Yabuki, Reinhard, Johan Liebert etc etc. Yk, in most cases I do agree that writing is subjective, but not with Kazuya. Kazuya is objectively the best written anime/manga character, and possibly even the best written character in all of fiction. Development: One critique I hear many people say is that when he gets development, he just returns to his former self really quickly.Well, thats the beauty of his character!! I want to make a parralel of Kazuya and the “Underground Man” from the book “Notes from the Underground” by Fyodor Dostoevsky.
Both characters undergo moments of self-discovery and growth, only to regress or stagnate at times. The Underground Man grapples with his own existential angst and the constraints of society, often oscillating between moments of clarity and nihilistic despair. Similarly, Kazuya confronts his insecurities and fears throughout the series, experiencing moments of personal growth and emotional maturity.
However, unlike the Underground Man, Kazuyas development is not linear. He frequently encounters setbacks and struggles with relapses into old patterns of behavior. Despite his efforts to overcome his insecurities and embrace authenticity, Kazuya often finds himself reverting to familiar coping mechanisms or succumbing to self-doubt. This is what makes Kazuya better than the Underground Man.
This cyclical nature of personal growth and regression is a poignant reflection of the human condition, characterized by its complexities and contradictions. Both Kazuya and the Underground Man navigate the internal conflicts and external pressures that shape their identities, often wrestling with conflicting desires and existential dilemas.
Kazuyas development mirrors the existential themes explored by Dostoevsky in Notes from Underground, highlighting the inherent struggle of individuals to reconcile their inner selves with the demands of society. Like the Underground Man, Kazuyas journey towards self-discovery is fraugt (its either spelt fraugt or fraught. Im not really sure) with challenges and uncertainties. When he gets development, both Kazuya and the Underground Man experience discomfort when confronted with the prospect of change or growth. This discomfort arises from a variety of factors, including fear of the unknown, societal expectations, and deeply ingrained habits and beliefs. In response to this discomfort, both characters may revert to familiar, albeit unhealthy, patterns of behavior as a defense mechanism. For the Underground Man, this may manifest as a retreat into cynicism and nihilism, as he struggles to reconcile his desires with the realities of the world around him... Similarly, Kazuya may find himself reverting to his former "pathetic" self when confronted with challenges or moments of self-doubt. However, Kazuya possesses a glimmer of humanity that compels him to keep fighting, even in the face of adversity. This innate resilience and determination set him apart from the Underground Man, suggesting that despite his flaws and insecurities, Kazuya is capable of growth and change. Id like to compare this side of him to Sisyphus. In mythology, Sisyphus is condemed by gods, and punished for eternity to lift the boulder up a hill. Everytime Sisyphus gets close, the boulder comes crashing down. Kazuyas character symbolizes this struggle. Kazuya is just so close to becoming a well-developed character, but it all crashes down. But Kazuyas spirit hasnt given up! Its still pushing up the boulder! You know whats the obstacle the rock encounteres while Kazuya struggles to lift the rock up the hill? ITS HIMSELF! He is the one bringing himself down, subconsiouscly of course. He is scared, and afraid, and he is very traumatized, but he keeps on fighting! This is the indomitable human spirit everyone! With this writing comparison, he is already better than all the anime characters in writing. Now, Ill have to write more to the point that he becomes better written then ANY fictional character.
Kazuyas love life:
Kazuyas love life is a journey filled with highs, lows, and everything in between and stuff. From his initial decision to rent a girlfriend to fill the void left by a recent breakup, to his evolving relationships with Chizuru Mizuhara, Ruka Sarashina, and Sumi Sakurasawa, Kazuyas romantic journey is a rollercoaster of emotions and experiences.
At the cire of Kazuyas love life is his complicated relationship with Chizuru. What begins as a transactional arrangement quickly becomes something more as Kazuya and Chizuru navigate the blurred lines between reality and performance. Their dynamic is characterized by moments of tension, tenderness, and genuine emotion as they grapple with their own insecurities and desires.
Despite their undeniable chemistry, Kazuya and Chizurus relationship is far from smooth sailing. Misunderstandings, miscommunications, and external pressures constantly threaten to derail their budding romance, forcing Kazuya to confront his own feelings and the true nature of their connection.
In addition to Chizuru, Kazuyas love life is further complicated by his interactions with other love interests. His relationship with Ruka Sarashina, a fellow rental girlfriend, introduces new challenges and dynamics as Kazuya navigates the complexities of honesty, communication, and commitment. Similarly, his encounters with Sumi Sakurasawa, a shy and reserved rental girlfriend, offer moments of introspection and growth as Kazuya learns valuable lessons about empathy, patience, and the importance of mutual respect in relationships.
Throughout his romantic journey, Kazuya experiences moments of passion, longing, and heartache as he navigates the complexities of love and desire. His relationships with Chizuru, Ruka, and Sumi serve as catalysts for personal growth and self-discovery, forcing Kazuya to confront his own insecurities and vulnerabilities.
Despite the challenges he faces, Kazuyas unwavering determination to find love and genuine human connection shines through, serving as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit.
There are a lot of characters I can bring up parallels for, for Kauyas love life. Kazuyas romantic journey reflects timeless themes explored in literature, drawing parallels to iconic characters such as Holden Caulfield from "The Catcher in the Rye," Jay Gatsby from "The Great Gatsby," and Romeo from "Romeo and Juliet."
Kazuyas search for authenticity and connection mirrors Holden Caulfields quest for truth amidst a world filled with phoniness. Both characters grapple with feelings of alienation and disillusionment, longing for genuine human connection amidst societal expectations. Kazuyas interactions with Chizuru, Ruka, and Sumi echo Holdens desire to break free from superficiality and find meaningful relationships.
Similarly, Kazuyas romantic pursuit shares similarities with Jay Gatsbys relentless quest for a love that transcends societal barriers. Both characters are driven by an idealized vision of romance, often to the point of obsession. Kazuyas infatuation with Chizuru mirrors Gatsbys pursuit of Daisy Buchanan, both fueled by a longing for a love that seems just out of reach.
Monologues:
Now this is his weakes point. His monologues are horrible. Chapter 218 of the manga is a testement of this.
Firstly, they often disrupt the flow of the story, halting the momentum of key scenes with extended internal reflections. This interrupts the natural progression of events.
Secondly, Kazuyas monologues tend to be repetitive, reiterating the same thoughts and emotions multiple times throughout the series. This repetition can feel redundant and tiresome.
Additionally, Kazuyas monologues sometimes veer into melodrama, exaggerating his emotional reactions and undermining the authenticity of his character. This excessive dramatization comes across as forced and insincere.
I didnt write about it in detail, but that doesnt mean that it isnt a big deal. No, it is a big deal, and its horrible, I just don’t know what else to write about lol.
Ok, in these 3 sections, I talked about pretty important stuff about his character. I wrote about his monologues, Internal and external conflict, characterization, symbolism, love life, development, parallels. Everything was perfectly done, except for monologue, which were horrible, so because of this one flaw, he isnt really one of the best fictional characters. He is the best ani/manga character tho in writing. If you disagree with this take, then sure, thats fine, but you have to agree that he has one of the best developments. Btw, yes, him developing and reverting to his old self is development. Ohh yeah, he is also very consistent in this, making him a very consistent character.
Also, yes, the manga has a lot of flaws like fan service and bland and annoying characters, which makes the manga bad, but the protagonist is absolutely peak. Geniuenly one of the best written characters of all time. Just because of the protagonist, I think this is the best manga ever written.
Also, while I was doing re-search for my analysis, I came across this reddit post, and I wanted to share it with you guys: Many of the readers are infuriated by Kazuyas behavior because he still acts like a teenager. But do you know that actually Kazuya also tries hard when helping others like Chizuru, Ruka, Sumi, Mami and Yaemori. Like chizuru sank on the seabed and was saved by kazuya, chizuru's dream of becoming a film artist was finally realized by idea of kazuya. Ruka almost crashed on the stairs and then saved by Kazuya, ruka could finally feel "normal human being in love". Sumi who was almost harassed by perverted men in public places and then rescued by Kazuya and thanks to that sumi became brave to talk with people. Mami, who always uses the nature of manipulating others, but now she wants a "truelove" because of the relationship between Kazuya and Chizuru.
Short Review: Ok, full disclosure; This manga is not a 1/10. It is, however, the worst romantic comedy I have ever read. Art aside this has no redeeming characteristics and I only finished skimming the story to give a competent review: The story is boring, the themes are childish, the characters are pathetic. Basically read anything else if you want a touching romance story, this is a pathetic shounen manga, including the obligatory harem, with an underserving MC. There you go, no spoilers, just don't read this. Long Review: Here I will reference some other manga that I thought about while reading this dumpster fire. Kazuya, the MC,and Chizuru have the emotional capacity of small children as grown adults. Both of them remind me of Sawako from "Kimi ni Todoke" but in only the worst ways and she actually develops faster as a character which is beyond belief. Chizuru AKA "best girl" does nothing for the MC aside from comfort him which he pays her to do. She even gives the classic " I don't hate him" line which made me LOL because she isn't even a Tsundere and it was completely against character, she never once even said she DID hate him.
This leads me to my next major annoyance. You know in "Domestic Girlfriend" how the idea of their relationship is taboo and they present it as such? Not here. The idea of paying someone to act in a romantic way is revolting but is presented in such a way that you would think Chizuru is performing a GD public service. Filling someone's emotional void with false emotions is not healthy, period. Yea both the characters have circumstances, but they lie to those important to them which makes it even worse.
To top it all off, the story is just boring. There is little to no "real" romance in this story and there is nothing else going on to hold your attention. No action, no comedy (unless you love revisiting the "Kazuya is such a loser joke" over and over and over) and no overarching plot like the keys in "Nisekoi".
I'll repeat again, this is the worse rom-com I have ever read. Read any of the aforementioned manga if you want something good to read. I know we are not supposed to comment on other reviews, but those 9/10 are total BS and I doubt they really read this with a critical eye. I can not fathom someone giving this more than a 3/10. I could name dozens of better shounen and shoujo manga.
So there's this new manga that recently caught my attention called "Kanojo, Okarishimasu", or in English: "I Want to Borrow a Girlfriend". What is this about? Quite frankly, it's literally what the title says. The main character is literally paying to be a sugar daddy to set up dates with a girl that sells her time for dating services. Controversial topic? Let's see. Kanojo, Okarishimasu is a shonen romance manga serialized in one of the most popular shonen manga magazines - Weekly Shonen Magazine. Written and drawn by Reiji Miyajima, it competes directly with other romance titles in the magazine like Domestic Girlfriend, Boarding School Juliet, and 5-toubun no Hanayome. It sells decently, but not as much as its competitors and I'm sure you can guess why.
Paying for dating and sex services has always been a controversial topic among the dating community. The majority of people hold the firm belief that you can't "pay" for love, which is true, but the reason why these kinks exists is because they are substitutes for real relationships.
Our protagonist, Kazuya Kinoshita is a freshman college student who was recently dumped by his ex. Looking to relieve himself of his breakup, he seeks solace in a rental girlfriend app called "Diamond". There, he comes across one of the top-ranked rental girlfriends named Chizuru Ichinose (she uses a different last name for her Diamond profile for privacy purposes). And the romantic comedy shenanigans go from there.
Frankly, if I were to compare this manga to its competitors, I wouldn't say it's any different. Its romantic tension is derived from ridiculous coincidences that force the two main romantic interests to be in the vicinity of each other, which is what normally captures readers since this is next to improbable in real life. In fact, I would say the closest comparison in my opinion would be Nisekoi - both the romantic love interests are pressured to fake their relationship due to family pressure.
So let's move on to the juicy stuff: the main criticism of this manga. The premise. Kazuya is like any other shonen romance main character; spineless, unmanly, and not willing to take risks which is what makes it easy for the author to continue writing chapters without anything significant happening. However, Kazuya gets a lot more criticism that other main characters not because he's indecisive, but simply because of the fact that the romance revolves around a sugar daddy service. I'm not going to go into depth about the morals of this premise but I will say: if this romance was based off any other setting, it would be much less criticized and more popular.
The reason why I absolutely love this manga though, is because the author had the guts to use a premise that is highly controversial, and create a semi-realistic romance story out of it. Everything in this manga is extremely well done, including the characters and plot contrary to popular belief. If you treat this premise like you're not offended just by the fact that it's controversial, then you will have an insanely fun time reading this if you self-insert as Kazuya.
The story doesn't exactly portray Kazuya as a bad person even though he does stupid things you would expect from a romance lead. He is in fact, quite genuine with what he desires and tries to make things right regardless of the outcome. In fact, he is so relatable if you've been through romantic troubles that it's insanely easy to self-insert into him. The only difference is that he's a realistic protagonist that gets into unrealistic situations, which makes it the perfect story to enjoy as long as you don't have a problem with the premise.
If you would like to read a manga where the setting and characters try to take a risk to do something different, then this is definitely the manga for you. If you like to stick to vanilla manga and don't like reading anything that might offend your morals and values, then don't read this. However I would still like everyone to be more open-minded and give this manga a shot, because you will never discover anything new if you only stick to what you're comfortable with.
This manga is boring and frustrating. The MC is a cuck, one of the worst cuck that I have ever seen but you can know it from the synopsis ( It's didnt disturb me but i saw on MAL that a bunch of people were complaining, well I dont know what kind of person you want the MC to be knowing he rents a "girlfriend" but yes...) The main problem of that story (i'm on chapter 145 so clearly far in the story) is the pace, it's one of the slowest if not the slowest pace that I have ever seen and oh gosh I haveseen many things. Basically you have idiot MC who is in love with the fake girlfriend, this one is quickly in love with him too but both will NEVER admit it. Sometimes at the end of the chapter you have a hope for the following chapter but finally it was a prank.
You are doomed to see an idiot MC (who has less testosterone than my 80 years old grandpa) complaining about how he's a worthless loser and an idiot girl who does not want to admit her love without any reasons. She does not even send signals, you cant even guess that she's in love with MC, you only know it because she suggests it once or twice while talking to an another character... That's why this story is soo frustrating.
In more than the half of the 145 chapters, you just have a fake date with the fake girlfriend with the girl who acts almost everytime coldly and beside her you have the MC, awkward and idiot everytime.
(minor spoilers) obviously you have the harem with the worthless MC. He has an another cute rental girlfriend who is openly in love with him, she becomes more and more annoying throughout the story. You have the ex of the MC who dumped him but for some reasons, she's still in love with him and she's possessive with him even if she's not with him (she will hugely stalks the MC). This girl is probably the most interesting character of the story.
UPDATE : well, chapter 219 now, it hasn't changed a lot. Same endings that lead to nothing,
same pace and now we get to know a little bit why does the bad girl do all of that to piss off MC and guess what ? Yes it's bad and inconsistent.
Finally the only redeeming quality of this manga is his art. It's modern and beautiful, girls are well drawn and cute but that's all..
This manga is one of those manga that the more you progress throughout the story, the more you will hate it. The author had a good idea but he totally messed up the pace and the growning relationship between both MC. I absolutely do not recommend to read it.
Overall:3 The concept of rental girlfriends in a romcom was a very interesting idea and I really expected this manga to be a "masterpiece" as a lot of reviewers here claim but I was utterly disappointed. Characters:2 The MC is a 20 year old virgin, he's really pathetic and he acts like a highschool boy. There isn't anything wrong with it, it's actually a good thing that we can see a character develop from this to a slightly better person while the story goes on but in the latest chapter which I have read(144) this guy still lies to his family for no good reason, has a trialgf that loves him? And he let's her be his gf because "IdOnTwAnNaHuRtHeRfEeLiNgS" he's either gonna go with the main heroine which he actually has feelings for or just go full harem cliche and finish it with everyone ends up being happy together which is very unlikely based on the story so far.
The "rental girlfriend" Chizuru Ichinose is actually the only toleratable character for me. She has a dream of becoming an actress, works hard for it, helps the stupid MC lie to his grandparents (wait what) and is a good person in general. She was inspired by her grandmother and movies/theater?(I forgot what she watched) to become and actress, her grandfather was very supportive towards her dream.
Ruka Sarashina is a girl who has a heart disease that makes her heart beat a lot slower than the average person's. She meets the MC then her heart beats fast af for some reason then the MC says a nice thing to her and she decides to be his girlfriend. Now this is very realistic indeed it's almost as if she's not one of those harem girls that loves the MC for some reason.
The other characters are extremely retarded. Why? They think Chizuru is another person when she wears glasses and uses a different hairstyle, the MC's dad think he borrowed money from Chizuru(Is that what comes into your mind first when your son who didn't have a girlfriend for years suddenly has a very beautiful girlfriend?).
Story:1
At the start of the story a massive amount of coincidence and actions that don't make sense happen. The entire fucking story only happens because of their grandparents and idk man doesn't that seem really weak? Yes it is. The story from then on progress in a very stupid ridiculous and slow way, it's so slow it almost turned into a slice of life manga. Finally!! Some development finally happen in the 100th chapters but yeah no nothing's probably gonna happen until the 500th, this story is stretched out for too long and I'm just uninterested in the repeating dates with different girls. It was fine with Mizuhara at first but they just keep adding girls and it's not it's gonna be better with more girls, in hentai that might be the case though. Even though the story is not very good I should be able to enjoy this right? No, I'm not enjoying looking at this MC dig his own grave for 100 chapters and then he finally does something, but did he just say "your dream is my dream?" What the hell I thought only couples did that?or family idk. The guy clearly doesn't have his shit together, often addresses it to himself and other people so he is aware but he doesn't really do anything about it. This guy's 20 years old. He's a nice guy, average nice but he needs to start thinking about his life dude. He spends too much, looks at cleavage, thighs, ass, every part of a girl in every chapter, lies to his family for no good reason, has a trial girlfriend because why not? It's not like I have feelings for this other girl and I'm probably gonna hurt this trial but who cares? She's cute. I would've enjoyed this manga better if his fish was the main character. The movie making arc was great, the MC finally does something logical, every character plays their part, there's development but that just doesn't make up for all the shit that happened on the first 100 chapters.
Art:7
It's fine I'm not really an art critic but it looks good to me soooo.
Enjoyment:2
I just can't enjoy ridiculous coincidences, horrible harem girls, pathetic MC that doesn't change(he's a little nicer now but not nice enough so I can't hate him), adding more girls doesn't help, and so much lies for no good reason I know I've been mentioning him lying to his family lot he doesn't stop there, the guy's digging his own grave and I'm frustrated af here looking at him.
Could've been really better
Would easily be a 10/10
I've read some and I already like it. Can't wait to finish it off. Author is well versed in the topic and has shown skills. Male MC is ok, Female characters needs improvements. Characters are well-rounded? Male characters lack imagination. Characters did react to the situation. I enjoy the series and can't wait for more. Why should you not read Kanojo, Okarishimasu? 1. Every arc MC turns back into a beta male with little to no improvement of his character 2. All of the girls except Sumi are a bunch of nutjobs 3. Literally MC gets an NTR fetish and gets hard on a public pool of all places 4. MainHeroine acts so retarded, early chapters to mid chapters she was fine and thinking logically but now shes one of the nutjobs girls EXCEPT SUMI
"Rent-a-Girlfriend? More Like Rent-a-Waste-of-Time" If you ever wondered what it’s like to watch a 20-minute anime episode that feels like 3 hours of emotional constipation, Rent-a-Girlfriend is the masterclass in mediocrity you've been dreading. This series takes all the worst tropes of romantic comedy — indecisive protagonist, repetitive misunderstandings, paper-thin side characters — and stretches them thinner than Kazuya’s self-respect (which, to be clear, is buried somewhere below sea level). Let’s talk about Kazuya, the human embodiment of secondhand embarrassment. Watching him stumble through life with the emotional maturity of a damp napkin is less endearing and more infuriating. Every time you think he might grow aspine, he turns around and doubles down on being the biggest simp in anime history. At this point, even Yamcha is like, “Bro, get it together.”
Then there's Chizuru — beautiful, intelligent, and somehow interested in this sentient doormat. It's the biggest plot hole in the show, second only to the mystery of how this series got greenlit for multiple seasons. The rest of the female cast exists solely to stir up drama that feels like it was written by a committee of hormonal teenagers arguing over shipping wars on Reddit.
The plot? A never-ending cycle of lies, misunderstandings, and awkward tension that never evolves. It’s like the story is allergic to actual development. Every episode teases progress, only to yank it away like Lucy pulling the football from Charlie Brown. Rinse, repeat, rage.
And the worst part? It’s addictive. Like eating stale chips while hating yourself — you keep watching, hoping something will change, but it never does. The only thing that develops is your regret.
Final Verdict: -273.15/10 — Absolute zero. Nothing redeems this. Burn it with fire. I'd rather rent a root canal.
It's Like Watching A Train Wreck. You Can't Look Away. Plot is absolute shit and goes to nowhere week after week and there is no improvment since the movie arc. but i still like it somehow. I'm too deep into the trainwreck that is Kanojo Okarishimasu i need to see the end. Apart from Kibe and Sumi all Characters are Retarted and they behave like 12 year old children. Art and memes are good tho. Reiji Miyajima is a top tier trollOverall 4/10, if you have some spare time and you want to slam your head against the wall, read it.
Boring! Looks like the author had a sentimental education only through manga. Male MC is annoying, as well as ALL male characters. Female characters are unidimensional. I mean Chizuru is a wonderful woman, OK. How can it be possible that she has no boyfriend? At least suitors. In ONE year? Come on! And the other girls? What do they find in Kazuya? He is not handsome, he is stupid and he is a complete disaster at almost everything. The author tries to make up an explanation via Grandmas which is honestly childish and weak. After 75 chapters it looks like nothing has happened, or to be more correct, the story isalways the same: it rotates around itself with very little development.
I was surprised when it came out that a year has passed within the narration! A year of WHAT?
It is frustrating because the rental girlfriend idea was not so bad.
My initial idea was to score 3/10, but drawing are fine so I gave 4/10
Be kind with yourself: do not read this manga!
This manga is definitely frustrating because you know the thoughts of the characters but can't help but feel helpless when something happens and you're stuck there just reading it what they choose to do in every situation. I highly recommend it because it'll keep you entertained and personally I believe the ecchi tag is almost unwarranted. It's very simple this manga keeps it very close to real life and so there is going to be sexual scenes as the plot advances. I feel like ecchi as a whole get's a lot of hate but this is a manga that shouldn't be glossed over because ofthat tag.
Now for my actual review of it.
Storyline:
The main character starts off as what we believe to be a coward, but if you look beneath that he's just another broken heart-ed kid and if you put yourself in his shoes you'd very clearly see that. The author keeps you intrigued by either the progression of the story or the absolute frustration knowing you can't control what happens next. You just want a single thing to happen and just want it to progress but you keep enduing either the main antagonist or some other series of unfortunate event. Be it the MC's own voice inside his head telling him he's being stupid or something getting in the way. The MC himself isn't weak by any means, I'd argue he's what you would call reliable. He stands up for people when they need it and he sacrifices for the people he loves. This isn't a manga about best girl because he loves them all but from the moment he has a realization there is no wavering as to who he's after. The storyline up to where I've read, which is completely caught up is amazing. I genuinely love reading this and from the last chapter issues we're waiting to see if finally the spark turns into a small flame. This is definitely worth your time to read if you enjoy long, breath holding romances about a college student who's struggling in relationships and his own virginity and sexual fantasies. It isn't crude and it doesn't push the ecchi aspect at all, if it happens, it happens naturally it isn't over the top as some artists would go.
Art: Honestly I've taken like 20 different screensnaps of certain images and scene's to make them into memes because some of the moments in this manga are just great, that aside, while this isn't the manga if you want to see amazing forests and what not. It's still very beautiful, the art is intricate and definitely does the story justice. It doesn't take itself too seriously in some area's either, there are area's where the art get's less intense for comedic value or to stress the mood. Definitely love the way it's drawn.
I'm going to keep following this manga till the end and since a million+ copies have sold, I don't see it ending and hope if it ever does turn into an anime. It gets the justice it deserves. The female character's are beautiful and adorable in their own ways (except one evil person) and as we watch the MC grow as a human being we can't help but smile and see that he's truly becoming the person he wished to become from the beginning. It's a beautiful experience.
TLDR;
The story pushes itself along naturally and we read the next chapter fingers crossed to finally get that long awaited real kiss.
--THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS-- I have read 138 chapters of this manga and this is the worst rom-com manga I have ever read. -2022 Update: Out of boredom I had decided to read the manga again and see what happened since I've dropped it. LMAAOOOOOOOO WHATTT THEEEEE FUCCCKK Nothing happened! NOTHING!! And on top of that author decided that kazuya is not pathetic enough and made him cuck. Please dont waste your time with it even author of themanga does not care about the series.
Short Review:
The story is not really developing and it feels like it's on infinite loop at this point. Characters are really boring and MC really sucks. Romance does not make sense and comedy is repetitive. Art is nice.
Long Review:
ROMANCE AND COMEDY:
-First of all, Romance in this story doesn't even make sense since MC is not really handsome, has low self-esteem and can't do anything on his own and still girls love him. There are some moments here and there but characters act like nothing happened very next chapters of the manga it feels like the story is on infinite loop and it does not feel satisfying to spend time with the manga.
-On the comedy side, best and only thing manga can do is expose some skin of a female character and make MC react like a loser. It is really repetitive and boring that I can't even talk so much about it.
CHARACTERS:
I will only be talking about 5 characters (MC, Chizuru, Mami, Ruka, Sumi) since most characters are really easy to forget. There is really little character development in the first 80 chapters and after 80 chapters characters stop developing (excluding Chizuru).
-Let's start it off with our MC. If the word simp was never ever used by humans in history, I would create the word simp and call this MC a goddamn SIMP. As I mentioned before, MC has low self-esteem and can't make moves on his love interest. He sometimes questions why he acts the way he does and does literally nothing to improve himself. MC is also a really overreacting person and it is really unoriginal, annoying and stupid. Overall really boring character.
-Chizuru is the only character that's developing on the recent chapters. Chizuru is not honest with her feelings towards MC in a really annoying way and it just does not fit her character but still, she is the only character that has some decent backstory so I really can not hate her.
-Mami...Where the hell is mami????She was the only thing that made the manga a little interesting and she just disappeared out of nowhere. As much as she made the manga interesting, she is not interesting as a character and she is really predictable. She is your typical villain hoe that wants to destroy MC's love life. There is not much to talk about her since she did not appear in the manga a lot.
-Ruka is really clingy but at least honest with her feelings. Her reason to fall in love with MC is unique but still, it is really stupid. She has some kind of back story but I feel like it is a poor excuse to make her fall in love with MC. She is really trying hard to be a proper girlfriend for MC but it does not make sense, as I mentioned before, MC is a loser and he fails as a human being. I feel like her only purpose on this manga is stretch the run time of the manga and vanish from the story when the time comes.
-Sumi is your typical shy cute girl. Being a rental girlfriend doesn't even fit her character at all but since MC can not interact with women like a man, there is no way to meet with the MC (and she is, you know, shy) so it was necessary for her to be a rental girlfriend in the story. Also, she is the only character that is bearable and actually acts like an actual human being. She is not an original and never seen before character by any means but it's nice to see a character that is not overreactive and calm and also tries to actually develop and change as a human being. Unfortunately, she is used as a tool for MC's so-called development and did not appear in the story again.
ART AND DESIGN:
Female character designs are really detailed and cute. Their clothing is really fashionable and I really appreciate the time and effort spent on these kinda things. Male character designs, however, feel like they are quick sketches. While female characters flexing on us with their fancy fashionable clothes, MC has like 2 outfits. Art is nice and stable through series but it has the same issue character designs has.
This is underrated as fuck, people hate the MC but act just like him. Kazuya is def the weakness of this manga and the plot progression is drawn out as fuck, like any other romcom manga. But the Character development, and relationship development is really good, i think Chizuru is one of the best written female protagonists. The art is great as well, very very pretty drawings, the outfits are creative and fresh, eyes have good shading, and the hair is the best part. once. you get past chapter 150, thats when this manga started to get good. If you can bear through the unbelievablycringe parts of kazuya being a depraved, horny motherfucker. You get something really good and a really wholesome relationship. Don't let the shallow minded basement-dwellers of this site prevent you from reading this masterpiece.
Oh Boy where to start with this. I started reading this after the first season of the anime had ended. I thought it there would at least be some plot development, and to my surprise there was very little. So I dropped it until around December 2021 when I decided to pick it up. Still no character development in Kazuya, still the plain ass c*ck he has been for the past 218 chapters. Story and Characters aside, the art really is the only redeeming quality this manga has, but even that is not enough to save it. **Spoiler Alert** After the chapter 218, if you hate NTR witha passion, stay away from this.
Why should you read Kanojo, Okarishimasu? 1. Good art 2. You will meet Sumi 3. thats about it lol what did you expect Why should you not read Kanojo, Okarishimasu? 1. Every arc MC turns back into a beta male with little to no improvement of his character 2. All of the girls except Sumi are a bunch of nutjobs 3. Literally MC gets an NTR fetish and gets hard on a public pool of all places 4. Main Heroine acts so retarded, early chapters to mid chapters she was fine and thinking logically but now shes one of the nutjobs girls EXCEPT SUMILatest Arc right now has 30 chapters means 30 weeks and not including the holiday breaks like Christmas and newyears and literally one character of the cast has been on the public pool for 30 chapters and 2 days only passed from that 30 chapters.
IN SHORT JUST DONT READ THIS GARBAGE AND READ SUMI SPIN OFF OF THE MANGA MUCH BETTER!
I cannot believe that I am wasting my time writing this review. If there's one thing to take away from this review, it's that don't ever read this. For literally 100+ chapters, the amount of repetitive arcs is astounding, no it's actually incredible. The lack of creativity and common sense the author has really shines through in this shitty work of a manga. It starts off with an interesting and new concept as well as a relatively relatable mc. But 50 chapters through, the author just ran out of ideas. All the arcs somehow feel the exact same, with the mc simping over the maingirl, blushing all the time, admiring her body and beauty in his mind. I swear to god, if he actually said what he was thinking, he would've been arrested 10 times already. My guy has no confidence, to the point it's absolutely cringe to read. Virtually no development happens between the main girl and the mc. IT'S BEEN 177 CHAPTERS, AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP HASN'T CHANGED SINCE LIKE CHAPTER 70.
I understand how romcom mangas are normally really dragged out, and just kinda repetitive, but this? This is just unnecessary at this point. Litterally there are so many opportunities for the mc to step up to the plate, but for some reason, whether it's cause he's a coward, or the constant cock- blocking from Ruka-chan, he just cannot say what he really feels.
And it's actually extra annoying, cause at some rare moments, he does say how he feels, but he talks in a extremely roundabout way, and the main girl is super dense, meaning that there's no reason for any type of communication between these 2. After all, nothing will happen anyway.
It's just hard to read after the first 50 chapters or so. If you are looking for a cute and wholesome romcom, read something else. If you're looking for a maure romance that deals with real problems, read something else. If you're looking for ecchi romcoms with lots of fanservice, read something else. If you're looking for anything remotely creative or entertaining, at this point you should just read something else.
This is just not worth your time.
I've a fondness for stories staged in university. They allow for a more proactive protagonist, a character with a bit more wit and charm that can better explore the space. It opens avenues for more genuine character growth while exploring a setting many associate with evolution and anxiety. It's a chance for an author to write in their own struggles and entrance the reader with drama and tension. Kanojo, Okarishimasu does none of this. The opening I will admit is fairly strong. Your typical nervous freshman self insert is trying to get a leg up in the world by furthering his education. He'snew and alone to a world he's unprepared for. It hints at a story of growth and self actualization. But is a bad tell of the actual narrative being woven.
This work is exactly what you don't want it to be, an drawn out melodrama between the two main characters. Kazuya: a spaghetti monster poorly disguising himself as human. Who spends his free time lusting after girls who have turned him down, while blowing his parents money.
I'm not sure if you are suppose to relate to him. The author must genuinely believes he has some relatable quality, I've just no idea what it is. His plights are all self inflicted draaaaaaaaaawn out misunderstandings at best, and legitimately aneurysm inducing destructive judgements at worst. It's gotten so bad in the chapters that the author has to make other characters infuriatingly stupid to bend around our protagonists idiotic bumbling.
The other main character/ love interest is Chizuru, a well drawn but poorly written upperclassman. She's wears two masks: one for her work as a soft core escort, and her more serious one for dealing with classes and idiots like Kazuya. Did I mention he stalks her? He does, to a very disturbing degree. Which I can't figure out why. As shes actively rejects him. Her only interesting quality is her ability to disguise herself by changing her makeup and/or hairstyle. And yes, this ability is played as a straight deception. Thus displaying the level of reasoning/critical thinking/intellect the cast in the show has – None.
At this point I'm not even reading it for the story. Why would I? The author doesn't care, why should I. I'm reading for the hopes of a tragic ending.
The panels read adequately well, and the dialogues is passable. The art is average usually, but sometimes dips lower for unexplained reasons.
I'd recommend skipping this series, it's not worth the time spent on it.
Only way I'm able to not hate the MC (is the same reason why I don't hate that German guy who liked art), is by Imagining God looking at me same way I'm looking at him, Unless I remember close to everything Wrong I've done in my life and compare it, I begin to hate him. and even then each panel he is on, makes it harder and harder. I Kind of found the reason why his actions are so triggering, He is the most selfish person I've seen, most insecure and on top of that having no principles and no confidence. I read somewhere that authortried to express his internal problems with the MC and I can't imagine someone actually thinking this way.
I understand that one can think of opposite sex as bags of flesh, but how is he able to at the same time put her at the pedestal as something above human.
now that I think about it, if I write a character who has all negative aspects of me and maybe 1-2 good aspect, I may match the MCs character writing.
if I continue I won't be able to stop, please do not torture yourself by reading this, unless you're horribly self conscious, insecure, Selfish, 0 confidence, and a pervert, then you may find something to relate to him, or even then he may still be too much.
Nagomi Kinoshita is the GOAT tho.
This review is coming from someone who has watched the first 3 episodes of Kanojo, Okarishimasu’s anime adaptation and thought the concept was really cool, so he binged all the chapters over 2 days and decided that- This. Manga. Sucks. Spoilers will follow. TLDR at the bottom. __________ Art: 7/10. Art is preference, don’t think too much about this. It’s not the greatest, but it’s not the worst unless you’re giving the less detailed, comedic panels a lot more weight than they should have.__________
Character: 2/10.
Kazuya: The majority of the reviews on here either portray Kazuya is a spineless, cowardly, indecisive, unintelligent idiot or as someone who’s been traumatized by his first girlfriend (now his ex) and is struggling to decide what he really wants. Both sides are valid, but unfortunately, Kazuya has been indecisive for the past 150 chapters and shown almost nonexistent levels of growth throughout the series. On dates in the most recent chapters, Kazuya still thinks ‘what’s a beauty like her doing with someone like me’, which is still what he thought back in the initial chapters. One can argue that this is because Kazuya has very low amounts of self-esteem and doesn’t think of himself as having much value, but it’s hard to believe that Kazuya doesn’t think of himself as someone who has gained some value throughout the story. He’s also still a bit too strangely perverted, considering he’s know these girls over the course of a year. But whatever, there’s an ecchi tag.
Chizuru: Blatantly and unapologetically the story’s heroine. Chizuru is probably the most well-developed character in the series, but also like Kazuya, is completely indecisive as to whether or not she likes Kazuya. The issue with her character is that very early on and I mean by chapter 20, it’s clear that Chizuru does have some feelings for Kazuya, but it takes her much too long to address those feelings. Her intelligence also comes under question because Chizuru is portrayed as a very intelligent girl, but somehow she never makes the connection that she’s leading him on or even suspects that just because he proclaimed to not have feelings for her, even though she’s aware that he has a problem with compulsive lying to avoid conflict.
Ruka: Ruka is Chizuru’s rival in love and by far the best girl in the series. Unlike Chizuru, Ruka constantly tries to advance her relationship with Kazuya and the parts with her in the story are typically the most interesting ones and she forcibly tries to make herself known as Kazuya’s girlfriend. Unfortunately, due to the story’s structure, Ruka is ultimately fated to lose. It’s fine for it to be predetermined that Chizuru is the story’s winner, but it honestly feels like the author barely gave Ruka enough moments to outshine Chizuru and that really, she’s just warming the bench for Chizuru.
Mami: Terrible character. She’s initially portrayed to be the ‘heartless ex-GF’ character that doesn’t want Kazuya to get over her by scheming to try to break up Chizuru/Kazuya but later on in the series, there’s a couple scenes that possibly indicate that she might have regretted breaking up with him, but none of these are explored in any meaningful way and honestly contradict how she’s written.
Sumi: Pointless character. Sumi is the last addition to the female ensemble that is in love with Kazuya. Admittedly, Sumi’s cute and her chapters are fun to read. But Sumi could be removed from the manga and the readers wouldn’t notice because she and her chapters have almost 0 relation to the main plot, if there even is one. In 150 chapters, we also know nothing about Sumi’s background before Kazuya and the reason for her shyness, just so you have an idea of how pointless her character is.
Most of the other male characters (including the latest e-girl addition of Mini) are irrelevant and practically only serve to help move Kazuya forward and don’t really have anything interesting in regards to themselves.
__________
Story: 8/10 for the first 50 chapters. 2/10 for the remainder.
I’m not going to discuss the rental girlfriend premise nor the morality of it because it’s been overdone. I think it’s fine and simply something you’ll have to accept as a reader.
Up until roughly chapter 45, I thought the story was pretty solid and would’ve given it an 8/10 because there appeared to be meaningful progression in all of the arcs with the most prominent female characters were introduced and initial relationships being established.
However, what follows for the next 60 chapters might as well not have even existed. It’s also worth noting that a year passes by in narration in the manga, but nothing of note happens throughout this year, which is absolutely mind-boggling considering that Ruka was introduced before this timeskip and seemingly no progression between Kazuya, Chizuru, and Ruka occurred at all? None of the interpersonal relationships advance in the slightest?
Following chapter 100, we get what can be considered the manga’s main arc and by that, the arc that has the most repercussions, referred to by the characters constantly and is still a driving force 50 chapters later. (In fact, just to prove my earlier point on how useless of a character Sumi is, Sumi is almost entirely irrelevant in this arc). However, although this arc is paced relatively well, there is still nonexistent levels of progression between the main characters.
In fact, as of when this review was written, around chapter 149, neither Kazuya nor Chizuru have confessed their feelings for each other, but only admitted that they might have feelings for the other when pressured by external parties. In 3 years, there hasn’t even been so much as an honest confession between the two? And sure, you can say ‘oh, but Kazuya’s doing so much for Chizuru, clearly she knows it’s because he has a thing for her’, but I’m not even certain about that. Kazuya seems to be barely on her mind and it seems that Chizuru barely thinks deeper as to Kazuya’s intentions as to why he does so much for her.
Oh, and as for actual romance in this manga? There is painfully, and I mean PAINFULLY, low amounts of it. Sure, Kazuya goes on a lot of ‘dates’ with the other women in this manga, but none of these dates really amount to much. And also, the amount of compulsive lying that goes on in this manga is just… ugh.
__________
Enjoyment: 3/10. I enjoyed this manga in the first 50 chapters significantly more than the following 100 chapters. Take from that what you will.
Overall & TLDR: Manga is a complete mess, terribly paced, boring/inconsistent characters that never progress meaningfully. A melodrama that isn’t worth your time unless you really have nothing better to do. If you must, read the first 50 chapters or so then drop it, because it doesn’t get better from there. 3/10.
Do not be tricked by the high rated reviews, especially from those who have read only 50 or less chapters. After chapter 219 I can 1000% say this manga is dog sh*t. The last 20 chapters wasted so much time and had absolutely no progress at all. Honestly comparing from chapter 20 to now, I do not see much progression at all in any of the characters. Kazuya is literally the same guy. He’s f*cking stupid, perverted, and lacks a backbone still. The art is the only saving grace, and even then the artist decided to draw some borderline NTR hentai for absolutely no goodreason.
