Reviews for The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic
Back to MangaAs an avid isekai Reader, I can say skip this one. The Theme of the story (using healing magic in offensive ways by instantly healing one self to continue rigorous training/fighting) albeit somewhat interesting in the first few chapters, is just that.... I personally found myself getting bored of this theme very quickly into the story as this is the only driving factor, as the story itself has no new content. One thing that really bothers me in Anime/Manga is how the author wants us the readers to react or perceive a character by constantly telling us about said characters great characteristics. This manga does this alot. This manga also takes advantage of "oh I'm so afraid of my sensei beating me up so I will fight this impossible battle as it's probably easier then to face the fury of my sensei crap!" Ugh how cliche and simple minded. I don't want to read a manga where the MC only does what he does to avoid the fury of who ever, especially when it's supposed to be a tense moment. It takes away from the severity of the situation.
Another disappointing point with this Manga is the fact that as the reader we can easily decipher which villains are going to have a change of heart. This villain is literally going to destroy the kingdom if he wins the fight! NP, our MC has the only ability to win miraculously even though he's ONLY A HEALER! OMG WHO WOULD HAVE KNOWN! *rolls eyes* OMG WHAT THE VILLAIN NOW IS GOING TO REFORM AND BECOME ONE OF THE CREW!!!! HOW CAN ONE MAN CHANGE THE HEARTS OF EVERYONE!!!!.... (dumb sarcasm)
It's just.... Sooooooo bad!!!!! I don't mind change of heart themes, but if it's done with as little effort as stealing candy from a baby then I just can't get behind it. It's just insulting to us the readers unless you are like 10.
Outside of all that though honestly I've read worse, and as i've mentioned before, this manga does have a somewhat strong begging so for all it's worth I give it a very generous 5. VERY GENEROUS.
The arts is nice, the writing is horrible, our MC is mid, 5 out of 10 wouldn't read again.
Incredibly bland, forgettable Isekai. Given the first 3 volumes I see little reason to continue reading this. The biggest issue is there needs to be some type of hook to keep you interested which this does not have. It's so casual and generic you can practically predict every line of dialogue. Fight scenes come and go with zero build up or suspense. This is very much a shounen series with mandatory fight action scenes every couple pages and lots of physical humor. The overall story content is as shallow as "maybe the bad guys aren't that bad" and "need to train more." The artworkis also very dull and looks identical to the thousands of other LN adaption.
If you are into Isekai and looking for something with a twist, this is for you. Another Isekai story but with a plottwist. The title really says it all, the wrong of using healing magic. After usato-kun being transported by accident and being accompanied by two heroes. His classmates and friends. He discovers he is a healing mage, and although that is super rare. He is pretty much useless in battle. So there starts the sadistic plot twist. Instead of using healing magic to support. He uses it for offence. The art is amazing and the most funny moments come when everybody is shivers in terrorwhen seeing the overpowered protagonist. The teacher of Usato and Usato himself are the best characters. They both develop a friendly and sadistic side. Kind of like a tsundere.
The rest of the characters are a bit mundane and standard.
It starts slow and the character doesn't get interesting until chapter 10 or so. Until then, it is quite boring to read. Later on, it gets much better. However, despite that, the story gets stupid each time you expect it to get better. Let's break it down: Spoiler Alert Below: - Painfully long arcs: I mean, the "Nack" arc lasted maybe 10 chapters. And that fight with Nea lasted maybe 7 chapters or so. That is brutally long bro. I mean, if those small events take such a large amount of chapters, that means the author probably plans this series to be 300 chapters long at least. The source material is probably that Light Novel so I guess that is the Light Novel's blame but they could skip unnecessary parts or compressed them to last shorter. I mean, given the releasing speed (41 chapters in 4 years), I won't live long enough to see the end of this manga.
- Pacing: I mean, delivering the letter is just one "arc" and even the "sub-arcs" like visiting the magic city or that weird village takes too damn long. I feel like at this point they could spend 2-3 chapters at a specific fly that bites Usato's dick. And what is frustrating is the manga started so fast. He goes training in very limited time, met all the main characters, kick demon lord's army, and all that happens in 10 chapters or so. Then after that "introduction" part of the story, we enter into a super slow "deliver the letters" arc. Or maybe the author thought, "shit if we go at this speed, the story will be finished in 50 chapters. We need to slow it down so we can make it last 300 chapters and milk our customers longer."
That paicng problem is a chronic disease in Japanese literature. The same story gets periods of "super fast, super slow, mid-paced, super-slow again, super-fast" etc. pacings and it becomes painful to read something like that. If you start it at a pace, you are expected to keep that pace consistently, unless you are telling a very important part of the story".
And honestly, wasting many chapters on characters who will be forgotten is another chronic disease. Like, "Nack" got a might introduction but he will be forgotten just like that Demon Girl. If you are planning to make them "side characters" why tf are you giving them such mighty character development or screen time? I mean, the other 2 heroes who were supposed to be other main characters got so little screen time or character development, you know? Not only that but, if you keep adding new characters all the time, old characters will not get enough development. They will feel like older versions of iPhones who got forgotten after the super sexy new iPhone came.
Another thing: The art was terrible. I mean, I could not get any fighting to see. I couldn't see who is hitting who, where is the guy hitting at? The effect was also terrible. It felt like a clusterfuck of lines and that's all. I can make such a distinction easily because I was reading Ride-on King before this one. I could make all the combat scenes out perfectly while reading it. But this thing right here has a quite messy art style.
Overall, it is not bad I think. The MC becomes less cliche and more unique as the story progresses so it is worth reading but again, this manga, just like %95 of Japanese literature and art, suffers from the same chronic diseases and ruins its potential to be great with stupid errors in storytelling technique.
I've always been curious about the "alternate" ways healing magic could be used, but really, some are way too much of a damn meme. Some crap about "Healing the world" as a means to revert time or time travel? That is absolute bullshit, and a huge turn-off. This one, on the other hand, feels like just what I'd imagine as a way to use healing magic for oneself. Feels near perfect in that regard. It did start off in the more generic aspect, but it sure evolved into its own thing soon. Sure, still got an overpowered protagonist, but the way it is executed here hasan actual charm to it.
The other Heroes haven't really been given much of a backstory yet, but they still bond well with Usato, and the rest of the cast from the Isekai world is pretty damn well done. The reactions of the people around makes sense, the comedic value feels just done well enough(Although that is a bit subjective and it might already be a tad overdone for some of you), it's sentimental, has beliefs that gel well with how the world works, and how he's perceived...
Overall, a solid read, really.
Story:9/10
Eh, it gets by. Feels like a more slow paced manga, but that's why it gets the time to showcase its own unique pros.
Art:7/10
Not particularly appealing, but not bad enough to be a turn-off.
Character:9/10
All the characters are portrayed as realistically as they possibly can be given this story, and the progression is done well.
Enjoyment:10/10
Clearly worthy. The transition from a serious, touching moment to something hilarious is always a fun sight.
Overall:10/10
Worthy of a read.
Tbh Im not really a big enough otaku or manga reader to give reviews but this book made me want to write something about it. The plot is simple and because its uncomplicated I would say its a nice and easy read for casual readers. The power balance seems just right as in the MC is strong but not so strong to the point he does not require ally help, in fact nearing chapters 30 and above, he starts depending on his allies a lot more. The story is wholesome but not without its dark sides as well. Its nothing like 'redo of healer' with theabsurd uses of healing magic.
Overall, its an unconventional isekai where the MC is OP and balances out with other characters. The side characters each have their uniqueness and its a wholesome read. If you feel like everything else is just too heavy, then this is just the sweet spot.
Also most review says he uses healing for offense, but its mostly him using his well-trained body to hit and incapacitate the enemy, followed by healing magic on himself to heal the wounds he caused himself....albeit repeatedly hehe.
The alternative method of using healing is interesting, but beyond that it doesn't have much to recommend it. Also, most of the characters change their personality/beliefs seemingly at random. The MC feeling passionate about his role in the healing squad after being abducted and tortured is... hard to believe. The enemies converting to the MC's side after being defeated are... hard to believe. The "Hero" Passionately engaging in battle after being the only member of the Isekai crew to actually question them being kidnapped and forced into war is hard to believe. People do change, and I'm not saying these character developments are impossible, butthe author didn't actually develop anything. There was no groundwork laid or any good reason for the characters to change. They just, become different people for no reason.
