Reviews for Case Closed Movie 01: The Time Bombed Skyscraper
Back to AnimeThe first movie of the Detective Conan series. Let me fill you in on the story, Conan (Shinichi) has to find a mad bomber, who's been setting fire to buildings and blowing up other things. Bomb after bomb, Conan finds his way to the criminal, but there's always a parting gift from the villian's. The story is pretty basic, but it's enjoyable, it's well organized and done pretty simple, yet impressive, the "final touch" was brilliant. Expect some anti-climax...es here. It suprised me at least. The art is very good, it's the same ol' Conan style, yet it's been animated pretty good, hope this will be getting betterwith each movie.
We still have the same ol' cast, introduced with 2 new characters, the villian and a police officer, the characters that are always in Conan are still the same, so good. Mouri's desperate love for Ran was done pretty well to if I have to say it. The villian is this bad-ass rich ugly person, which is almost standard, the meaning behind his terroristic attacks are unbelievable stupid, but maybe it's just the way "they" (the job he performs) think. The police officer is cool too, pretty plain guy, but he's not the guy he seems to be.
Overall a good sound, though I give it a lower point since I still don't agree on Det.Mouri's voice-actor.
Highly enjoyable movie, if you like or if you don't like Conan. Beautifully animated, good simple story, well organized and good dialogue's.
Well, first of all, I gotta tell you, I was a little bit surprised when I realised this movie has only one review. I personally think that this is a must watch movie for all the Detective Conan fans out there. Anyway, lets begin: Plot: 8 I really liked the plot. I mean, don't expect something outstanding, but it was honestly good. Shinichi, who is trapped in the body of young Conan, has to deal with someone who planted bombs all over the city. As I said earlier, the plot isn't the most original thing you'll ever see, but it's good. Art: 10 Let's talk about the art. It's amazing,I mean, I like the character design and the animation in the anime series, but the movie was something else. Seriously, it felt like they tried so hatd to make the animation perfect- and let me tell you a little something- they succeded.
Sound: 7
Well, there's honestly not much to talk about here. I mean, there was a quite nice soundtrack, but not something honestly amazing.
Enjoyment: 9
I really enhoyed this movie. It's a good movie that has the Detective Conan spirit in it, and I had an amazing time watching it.
Overall: 8
This movie is good. If you consider yourself a Detective Conan fan and you haven't watched it, then well, joke's on you, because this move is very fun and enjoyble, as I mentioned before. Go watch it!
after done rewatching this movie i just thought "ah why don't i try writing a review about it" and here i am. let's start the review Story: 6 well the story is nothing unusual for a detective genre. the culprit called the detective and challenged him to found the bomb that he planted and give him some clue to solve it. not the most original thing but enjoyable Art: 7 the animation are pretty well done. not jaw gaping but fluid enough for eyes and the rest is the usual detective conan art style if you like it then you will like the one here too. Sound: 6 it reuse thesame soundtrack from the tv series and there is only 1 new standout soundtrack in through the end, i don't know if there is any new soundtrack outside of that. nothing too bad but not great either
Character: 5
the usual detective conan cast with only 4 noteable new character: moriya, shiratori, the mayor and his son. moriya is a symmetrical freak, shiratori....um.... likes architecture? and the mayor and his son doesn't have time to show personality. that's a shame since when i see a movie i pay attention more to the new character since i already knows the other character from the tv series
Enjoyment: 7
the usual detective conan. you will like it if you like detective conan
Overall: 7
if you are in mood for some brain teasers/ more detective conan then go ahead and watch it
After 1 year of airing on TV, Detective Conan would finally get his chance to shine on the big screen. In 1997, the first ever Detective Conan movie, The Time-Bombed Skyscraper, was released to the public and became every fans' favorite movie. Despite its shortcomings, this movie is still very fun to watch to this day. Throughout the movie, Conan has to find bombs spread throughout the city before they blow up. Seeing him chase down and deduce the location of these bombs is one of the highlights of this movie. Another thing is how much Ran plays an active role in the finale. In laterfilms, she would rarely be allowed to be any more than a damsel in distress. Speaking of finale, everything done there is just so good, it has to be seen to be believed.
On the other hand, I do want to say that the culprit isn't that hard to figure out. Because of that, many people may get bored as they wait for Conan to finally catch up with them. Also, The version that I saw had some pretty shabby subtitles. While the translation itself was great, the editing and formatting was nonexistent. Characters' dialogue keeps getting mixed with title cards and song lyrics. While there are many better subtitled versions out there, the one I reviewed is quite literally a mess.
With all that said, this movie still has some charm going for it. Despite being nearly 25 years old, the art style is so well done that people can still enjoy it. If you have just started watching Detective Conan, then definitely watch this movie when you can. It's definitely a very good first impression!
Story - 9 Excellent pacing with high stakes and lots of content. The case itself has a little bit for the viewers to figure out for themselves, but the action is the real star of the show. Story feels solid from start to finish. Art - 8 Same style, higher quality and effort. Sound - 8 Great timing and presence from start to finish. Character - 8Not a whole lot of development, but we got to see the characters interact a lot and very satisfyingly too. Also got a good dose of the Ran & Shinichi romance.
Enjoyment - 9
Good, clean fun. Especially for those not really into/familiar the TV series, so watching with others is great.
Overall - 8
Feels like a real movie, and friendly to outsiders of the series. May be a bit too action orientated for some, but the balance is just right for me. Lots of mystery, tension and danger from start to finish. A very good movie.
Detective Conan Movies Rewatch Before Watching Movie 26: Movie 1 The very first Detective Conan movie was a good start to the franchise. The case, upon a rewatch, was pretty standard, but it was presented in a coherent way, with a proper setup and a logical deduction. An added bonus would be the culprit's motivation, which was unique among all DC cases (over 1,000 episodes and 25 movies). Outside of the case, the characters were used well, with all major characters having appropriate amounts of screen time, and the movie also set up Ran's involvement in a natural way (which is not the case for someof the future DC movies).
The highlight of the movie is the train sequence. The way the train operators successfully avoided disaster nearly brought me to tears. It was a gripping sequence that was enhanced by the music.
Two of the only noticeable flaws were the animation and the pacing of the movie. The animation was better than some of the earliest DC anime episodes, but even then, there were some poorly animated shots. The pacing and the dialogue of the movie were noticeably rushed at times. However, neither was significant enough to seriously detract from the movie.
Overall, Movie 1 was an enjoyable watch and a solid start to the movie franchise. 7/10.
I grew up watching Detective Conan. It´s probably one of the reasons why I enjoy thrillers so much. Despite that, I have never seen one of the movies. I am still a bit dumbfounded that there even are 26 movies and the anime is still running. Yes, he apparently still is a child. The Time Bombed Skyskraper was a mixed experience for me. I enjoy the atmosphere Detective Conan creates and the theme song is as iconic as the James Bond theme, but something was missing here. The plot is super predictable and you know who the culprit is immediately after he is introduced. Therealso was a too big focus on action scenes. Conan is the best when the focus lies on the investigation and explanation of the murders, focusing so much screentime on chase sequences was a weird choice. Despite that, the ending was great. Especially the dialogue between Conan and Ran when the bomb was about to go off was quite charming.
Such an amazing movie for first movie and especially impressive for a movie from 1997. Overall, I’d rate it 8/10. Storyline: 9/10 I found it really engaging. The plot revolves around two seemingly unrelated cases that end up being connected. It starts with solving the murder of a surgeon and then moves on to a bomb threat in Tokyo. I thought the two cases were different case, but the first one turns out to be a clue for solving the second case. Art: 7/10 Since it’s a movie from 1997, the visuals are a bit rough around the edges, so I’d say it’s just okay.
I personally thought the movie wasn't THAT great. Perhaps, it's a great movie to pass time if you don't have anything else to watch. I heard that the other "Case Closed" movies were better than this one, so given the benefit of the doubt, I'll just assume this movie wasn't great because it was the first of the series. I thought the art and sound was good, similar to that of the show. I watched the dubbed version of the show. The characters, especially Detective Richard Moore were hilarious. His sense of humor always made me laugh. One thing that amused me was how people weren't evacuatedfrom the subway station after it was confirmed that there were bombs on the trains...
As far as enjoyment goes, I did not think it was too bad. However, it's not something I would see myself rewatching.
