Reviews for Haikyu!! Movie: The Dumpster Battle
Back to AnimeOkay so I got to watch the Dumpster battle today at the premiere day! (Warning: a little spoilers ahead) I could gush about Haikyuu all day because of how personable those characters feel to me (thanks to its great character writing) but I'll just keep this simple: The movie was GREAT! I CRIED! 😭 the boy to my left was secretly weeping 🥹🤭 as a manga reader the pacing didn't feel rushed to me, I guess it was fine, it's been a while since I read the manga tho, but honestly I always feel like the Karasuno vs Nekoma match would be great in a movieformat AND IT DID! The director definitely did a good job and managed to sell the idea that this is a movie quality arc, the OSTs were great (they were always been) The flashbacks were REALLY GOOD and important to build up the tensions and everything. And as for the match it felt like I was watching an actual sport match 🥹
There's this one cinema that showing Haikyuu 33x times on todays premiere 😂 if they make money out of this movie they should definitely consider to make:
Fukurodani arc OVA
and a Timeskip Season/2-3 OVA episodes
Because I feel like the next movie will only be about Karasuno vs Kamomedai. Overall it was 9/10 for me (the manga is still 10/10) The grip this series has for me is truly insane! Last but not least, I know this movie just came out today but I can't wait for more!! 😆
First time I can say, that they didnt elevate the source material. Lots of skipped content. The emotional dynamics was done well. Overall instead of feeling like I was watching a volleyball anime. I felt like I was watching an anime sprinkled with volleyball. No tension, no urgency in the match. Still giving this a 7/10 bcuz I love haikyuu but very sad I waited so long for this. Understand a lot of people like the anime for purely the character dynamcis, I agree i also loved it for that. But the volleyball aspect made me grow to love a sport I knew nothing about.2 full rallies in a 3 set match was not it.
[no post nekoma game manga spoilers] Very poor movie that pissed me off as someone who adores this match in the manga, and I'm glad I did not watch it in theatres and would've regretted it if I did. Outside of Hinata, Kenma and Kuroo[the ones i consider the main characters of this movie] it doesn't do any major characters[in this segment] justice directly and as a result, it indirectly harms these characters The others did not get nearly enough , Kageyama felt so non existent compared to how pivotal he was in the manga, tsukki's moments weren't adapted well enough, Yamaguchi had more moments in the nekomagame which build up to the kamomedai game along with Tsukki, the less said about daichi and asahi the better, Noya was alright but again not enough.
The lack of quality inadapting these characters makes every character they're related to worse by extension, effectively dragging down nearly the entire cast , including the three main characters.Haikyu is a series centred around character interactions than spectacle, and this movie seems to prefer the latter a lot more .
Visually speaking, it's pretty good but that's irrelevant when it misses most emotional beats
The music wasn't great, could've contributed to many moments being weak alongside the writing and pacing
Overall , if you like haikyu until now, read the manga
As for good stuff, the flashback to Kuroo and Kenma playing volleyball as kids in the gym with Nekomata's guidance was adapted perfectly, so was kenma's iconic cage scene[but not Shoyo breaking from it, that could've been better].Tsukki's hi five was great too.
As a manga reader, after getting tired of no continuation from the previous season and having re-read the manga about 8 times in total, I would say they did a decent job at the animation. There are definitely a lot of stuff cut out from the manga with most the attention being given to Hianta and Kenma, which to be fair makes sense with the movie running time of only 80 mins. The highlight for me was the voice acting with Kaiji Yuuki-sensei and Murase Ayumu-sensei doing absolutely so perfect at voicing the hyped emotions behind each line. The OSTs and cinematography was chef'skiss and the pacing was decent for all the cutting up they did. I was at the edge of my seat this whole time and shaking even though I already knew what would happen.
In conclusion, I would say it is recommended, but if you are a fan of some specific characters from the manga, then I would also understand why you would have mixed feelings.
Being only ~80 mins long would mark this match as the shortest in runtime of any of the major "end of season" climatic matches, and that certainly shows. Pacing wise the movie just felt weird and I'll try my best to express those feelings. On one hand some scenes move at a breakneck pace with moments that shook up the game by creating additional problems to solve being given little time to get into a character's headspace before someone else has already found an answer. On the other hand some scenes dragged, flashing back to a scene from a previous season in an attempt toquickly establish context for the next character interaction instead of trusting the audience to remember previously established material.
On the visual side the movie did mostly fine, but outside of a few specific moments the animation wasn't notably better than what's come before in the tv series. To bring up serving as an example, we're not given any stylish scenes that rivaled serves we've seen from Oikawa/Mad Dog/Ushijima.
There's still much to love about this movie however, after all this is still Haikyuu. Many of the character interactions were on point with great highlights such as the banter between Kuro & Tsukishima, when they weren't just flashing back to and referencing season 2 anyways. Animation wise the depiction of exhaustion from the characters was a major highlight, likely the best depiction in the series so far, even if exhaustion itself only seems to have narrative impact on a few players.
Ultimately I'm left with mixed feelings on the film. While undoubtedly enjoyable, I do find myself wondering if adapting the story into new TV season would have addressed some of my concerns. I'm ofcourse excited for the next and final film, though there's now a part of me concerned for how the next film is handled given there is supposedly even more to adapt when compared to the Nekoma match.
Honestly, the movie was great, Haikyuu never fails to always get me at the edge of my seat, ISTG there is nothing like this show. I think the choice they made to base the first movie on Kenma's POV + executed the match like a real-time match causes it to flow more smoothly and not weird at all, the directing was amazing, also recommend for the manga readers as well and I think it was good to not look back at the manga before watching the movie, it's better to do so afterward. They will release the 4D version soon and I'll watch it again!(I live in Japan, I didn't watch it illegally lol).
This movie just reminded me of how Haikyuu used to give me chills! This series is so good at building the hype moments and stakes! I am genuinely mad at myself who just discovered Haikyuu around two years ago, this show flipped my perspective on the sports genre, I thought SlamDunk was going to be the only sports series that I liked but omg Haikyu is a really well-made sports series as well, no wonder so many people call this series as PEAKYUU 😩This movie might not be as mind-blowing as the S3 but omg it's still PEAK! And the animation is incredible! Wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy betterthan the S4. I’m so gonna read the manga on my vacation.
When you watch this in a cinema it really hits, good atmosphere, very solid animation, however... I think it felt way too short, all over the place and rushed, I felt like I was just dropped in the middle of the game where I barely know what happens, I really love Haikyuu and binged all 3 seasons, So many emotions throughout the series, but this time was different, it was supposed to be a very important match where you really feel the pressure, but it wasn't as I expected. Don't get me wrong, overall it was still pretty good, it's not a total letdown or whatever, butpersonally I expected more, I expected that the movie would transmit more emotions to the public, I expected that I would feel the excitement of both teams, like I did in season 3 vs Inarizaki.
What the movie lacked the most was IMPACT, because it felt way too much like a regular match and not like a decisive battle, I still felt goosebumps to some moments and it was awesome, but in the end it still didn't rose to my expectations.
I'm pretty sure most of us remember the iconic block of Tsukki vs Ushijima, that scene had TONS of impact, it was heavy, it was so hype that makes you jump from your seat, well this movie lacks such moments and it's a shame.
Overall I give it a 7/10 As I said, I still enjoyed it, but not to the extent I hoped, or maybe I'm just lying to myself because I paid money to watch it, I don't know. It could've been way better if we had a 2h movie at least.
Let me preface this by saying that I absolutely love Haikyuu. In a vacuum, would I recommend this to sports anime fans? Of course. But, this is yet another reminder of a lame and inevitable trend we're seeing of studios cashing in quickly on a film, rather than adapting the source material into a fully fledged season. The end result is that many of the scenes feel a little more rushed than necessary, the overall urgency and drama is reduced, and moments that are meant to be emotional and impactful just breeze by. Worse still, some awesome plays from the manga are even cut completely (Nishinoya backheel save?) YukiHayashi and Asami Tachibana once again kill it with the OST, and it's the characters we all know and love - but it could have been so much more.
I hope part 2 has a different result, but I doubt it.
Plot: 8
Characters: 9
Animation: 7.5
Soundtrack: 9
Enjoyment: 6
Don't watch if you are expecting a good movie, you'll cry. Not because its a great movie, but because of how they ruined it. Very disappointed while watching this. So bad I genuinely did not want to finish. Just a cash grab to turn these into movies instead of spending time creating meaningful episodes and a real character arc for Hinata / Kenma (or any character for that matter). It should be the entire team vs the entire team, instead its just focused on Hinata vs Kenma. Tsukishima was way out of character. No mentions at all for anyone else, they were on the screen forlike less than 2 minutes each. Animators just wasting time with backstories and cutaways to side characters that have little to no meaning. Animation felt extremely rushed compared to the rest of the show. There was absolutely no build up, making major moments incredibly meaningless. Genuinely appalled at this standard that is being set, especially when To The Top is one of my favorites.
It's a different direction. I was surprised when I saw the movie was only 85 minutes, which is roughly 4 episodes time-length. But after watching, I can see the decision. This doesn't have the same vibe as the Seijou or Shiratorizawa matches, where it was "do-or-die", "we must win, if we lose it's all over". It was more like this is the biggest match of the year between the two schools, but not the final one; there will be future matches like this in the following years. So while there is action and high-paced movement, the vibe is relatively more chill; not as passionateand butt-clenching atmosphere.
There's more emotional (though not heavy) focus than I expected. But what I really enjoyed was the varied camera perspectives. That's what was movie quality for me; the amount of value they spent in designing the different angles and shots. The sound design was also good for theatres; I could feel the weight of the collision sound effects.
It should've been a series, not a movie. I really love the story and this part is as good as the previous ones. I love character development, their motives and how they work in relationships. But there are so many moments that feel crammed and cramped. It really calls for standard pacing of a series where an episode is devoted solely to the back story of characters and their development. These are not obligatory but let you savor the moment and the atmosphere of the anime. Here they are hinted but not covered fully. The game is also half cut, there should be more actual volleyballscenes to give you the appropriate thrill. Once again, the story is good, but it's told here not in the best way and it's really sad.
This anime have (no spoilers) - the complete "Battle" throughout the movie - A plot focused on the rival - Kenma - "Very good" animation - Copious amount of weird laughs - Short Flashbacks - faster paced plays - Hinata- a feeling of more powerful ball impacts (this could be because of the cinema)
- Couple of smart plays
- POV, you are a volleyball player
- Changes in animation style in different parts of the movie
- Post credits
Despite of the "2 movies for don't know how many manga volumes" the first movie is an excellent film, and if you already watched the previous seasons why stop now?, you can watch it on theaters or just wait like 3 months and it will magically appear on your computer.
This movie--and hence this overall series--is what makes anime so fantastic! I couldn't believe my eyes at the animation of this godlike show. omg I was at the edge of my seat throughout the show due to the immense display of clean and smooth movement that appeared on my macbook screen. Golly gosh I cant believe I was able to sit down and watch a series such as this in the big 25. This show gives you everything: excitement, enjoyment, and most of all: HAPPINESS! If you dont watch this movie, then I am afraid to say that you are missing out on such anextreme form of great content. There is everything you need in this show! GOsh dont even get me starteed on this fantastic character development, ITS absolutely supreme! GOsh I wish I was hinata shoyo and as smart and calculating at Kenma! Gosh this battle between kurasno and nekoma high schools is definitely one for the books
We finally get to see "The battle of the garbage dump", something that Haikyu has been building up incredibly well over it's four previous seasons and boy is it worth the hype. 90 mins of pure joy, This movie is Intense, fast paced, hilarious, exciting, wholesome. There is a lot of pay off for everything that has been set up between Karasuno and Nekoma in the past. Haikyu is known for giving it's characters some incredible moments and developing them and there are a lot of such moments in this film, especially with Kenma, who is definitely the star of this movie. His development kindof gives the same satisfaction that we get with Tsukishima's development and there is brilliant POV scene with Kenma that was breathtakingly animated. I watched this in a packed IMAX screening and everyone lost their minds seeing that. Definitely one of my most memorable movie going experiences, I already can't wait for the next movie!
I was really excited to watch this movie and had high expectations, but unfortunately, it let me down. Despite not having read the manga, the pacing felt rushed. The ending was anticlimactic, leaving me wondering, 'Is it over already?' The predictable storyline diminished the stakes, and unlike previous arcs, there weren't any memorable scenes. The dialogue and writing were mediocre, nothing special. Most character interactions felt like filler, failing to contribute to the plot. On the positive side, I loved the music and animation. The soundtrack is consistently impressive, and Haikyuu's animation quality is always reliable. As a Haikyuu fan, I'm disappointed with this movie, but I remainoptimistic about future projects. Overall, I'd give it 5/10
It’s been a while since I’ve watched the previous season of Haikyuu, so imagine how excited I was when I heard there’s a new movie coming! Haikyu!!: The Dumpster Battle is the most anticipated game between Nekoma and Karasuno, so I can’t really help but expect a lot for this movie. And as you can see, it didn’t disappoint! This movie is the continuation of the previous series, so I recommend watching that one first before pursuing this movie to fully enjoy and understand this movie. Trust me, it’s all worth it! Just like their previous game, this movie let us get personal with the characters, particularlythe Nekoma team. I love seeing how each of them have their own reason to play volleyball and why they want to win. I particularly like Kenma’s story and how this nonchalant character finally discovered that playing volleyball is fun. His rivalry with Hinata was pretty scary, hahaha, which is actually far from what I expected. I always think Kenma is very cute, so seeing his scary and intimidating side during this game was kind of traumatic, wahahaha. It just goes to show that despite his cute and innocent appearance, this kid is another force to be reckoned with on the volleyball court.
Aside from those two, it was also great seeing Kuro and Tsuki play. You can really see how Tsuki respects Kuro and how Kuro is so proud of his “little” student. Bokuto’s proud face is also pretty nice to see, awwww, they’re like father and mother to Tsuki, wahahaha. It was also nice to see Tsuki smiling for real in this movie, wahhhhhh!
When the music is on during their game, you should always expect that they will show you something great, so seeing Hinata hit that ball after jumping, or should I say, “flying” was so epic! After being discouraged for not being able to score, Hinata finally able to show everyone that he’s still there fighting. It was so good that I was almost close to crying. Uwaaah! They really need to release a new season soon!
And my, that ending was far from what I expected, so I am really looking forward to what will happen next if they play again in the future <3
Whether you’re a sports lover or not, I am sure you will also enjoy this franchise as much as I do! What are you waiting for, watch Haikyuu now, *wink.
This movie could have been an e-mail. If you watch Haikyuu for character development or story, I do not recommend it. If you watch Haikyuu for good volleyball animation, there is about 2 minutes of it and I do not recommend it. What makes Haukyuu a great show is the build up of the story of the team, as well as individual character arcs, S1 has Kageyama learning to trust his team, Sugawara learning to be the back-up, Hinata learning to play volleyball in general, bringing back Asahi & Nishinoya et. S2 has Hinata developing his general skills, Karasuno climbing the mountain that is teams similarto them, Hinata facing off against a discount version of his idol, Tsukki trying to figure out why people love the sport, Tadashi finally getting his chance to shine, failing, grappling with it. S3 has Tsukki's evolution, Nishinoya's struggle against Ushijima, etc. S4 has a personal struggle for nearly everyone, Tanaka, Nishinoya, Kageyama, Hinata and all of their arcs get resolved in S4. Unfortunately, this movie just gives a nod "Hey remember this arc?" They kind of give Kenma an arc but it feels rushed and the payoff feels undeserved. There is one scene that has genuinely good animation, but otherwise it also essentially skips all of the volleyballl. Haikyuu is my favorite show, but this movie felt like a huge let down. Supposedly the manga version of this match is good, so maybe check that out instead, but to me this movie honestly felt like a cash grab and for that reason I do not recommend.
I refused to read the manga, so I could experience it fully live. There was quite a difference from it being in episodes. It lost the suspense you would get from moving on from episode to episode. Despite the movie being only 85 minutes, a great amount of it was flashbacks. The moments leading up to the match are significant, but it made the match itself very predictable. When it got to the end of the movie, it was a bit disappointing. It may or may not have been intentional, but the ending felt unresolved and cut short. I wish there were more events andaftermath near the end to leave us more concluded and satisfied.
It's been almost 3 and a half year since it's last Season and we all have been waiting for this to continue, This Movie is the best animation of Haikyuu!! , transaction between frames is soo fluid, and that POV scene is literally THE BEST SCENE IN whole movie, 90 mins of pure joy, This movie is Intense, fast paced, hilarious, exciting, wholesome. As a manga reader, I would say they did a decent job at the animation. There are definitely a lot of stuff cut out from the manga with most the attention being given to Hianta and Kenma, which to be fair makessense with the movie running time of only 80 mins. But it's not enough. I want more, As for the soundtrack, it's excellent, and even though Spyair changed the singer, But they are still very, very good at it. This series is so good at building the hype moments. I love Haikyuu!! This series is my favorite sport anime.
