Reviews for Reincarnated as a Sword
Back to AnimeIsekais are a dime a dozen these days, and it’s not every day you find a really special one. I wouldn’t go out of my way to recommend this one, but what I will say is, it’s above average by isekai standards for sure, with good animation and lovable characters that make this show very chill and easy to watch. It has some good concepts, but the overarching video game aspects do hold it back a little. There are also some very unnecessary aspects of the show other than the game mechanics, such as the telepathy, which I’ll highlight below. STORY: It’s pretty basic, but it doesn’treally do anything very wrong, or step out of their lane. The one thing that stands out is that the person who gets isekai’ed isn’t really the main protagonist, but the helper to her. I really wish that the way people get isekai’ed get a bit more creative, but perhaps no one really cares about those few minutes of the plot. The levelling up mechanic is one thing that I can never really get behind in most shows, because it’s just a plot device to skip any sort of training, or more meaningful character development. The characters just get stronger by gaining materials and slaying enemies, not by genuine training.
ART:
Genuinely way better than I expected, but seeing that studio C2C adapted this was already a good sign, given some of their previous work, for example, Majo no Tabitabi, which looked very solid. Some very sharp sakuga in some episodes that could even rival shounen fight scenes, but also some parts weren’t that well animated, especially near the end. Overall, the animation was still a big highlight to this show.
MUSIC:
The OP and ED were very good, although the OP would hint that the show would potentially be pretty dark, which didn’t necessarily hold true. The soundtrack itself was pretty basic, which very video-gamey sound effects and music that didn’t really stand out.
CHARACTERS:
Fran carries this show on her back, and anyone who has watched this knows it. She’s adorable, and just a little cinnamon roll. She has her moments to shine, though I wish things got a little darker than they did. The relationship between her and Shishou was very wholesome as well, though I don’t really get why they talked in telepathy mode, especially since a lot of the time, Fran is talking out loud. I do understand using telepathy to speak during battles, but when they’re just talking normally, the telepathy was quite unnecessary, and because of that, Shishou’s voice actor, Shinichiro Miki (voice of Kaiki from Monogatari and Kisuke from Bleach) had that filter over his voice which made it a little strange hearing it for the whole episode every time.
The side characters are alright, but other than Amanda, none really stood out, as they just kind of existed. As for the villains, once again, they fall into the category of “evil just for the sake of being evil”. They’re just simple bad guys, with no real motives, which is a bit underwhelming but expected, for the nature of this show.
Overall, other than Fran and Shishou, quite a forgettable cast of characters, but it was still enjoyable to watch their shenanigans.
ENJOYMENT:
For the most part, I did enjoy this series, other than a few segments near the end of the series. Very cute and wholesome.
THEMATIC EXECUTION:
I really wish the show emphasized more on the darker themes. We saw shades of them, with the whole slavery aspect in the beginning, and when Fran was killing the villains, but I think the show would have benefitted more from extending those scenes and really fleshing out the world a bit more, because from what I saw in this show, there were definitely a lot of dark elements present in the world.
OVERALL:
Not the most unique show by any means, but a good effort here for sure. Pretty great animation, and seeing Fran and Shishou’s wholesome relationship develop was a nice treat to see. I would definitely be happy if a Season 2 ever was announced, because Fran eating curry is life!
Reincarnated as a Sword sounds like a boring gimmick, but it does a suprising job of mixing classic fantasy and isekai. The man in the sword is of course somewhat overpowered, but is stronger when wielded by an actual swordsman. As it so happens, a cute black catgirl finds him and he handicaps himself in a way in order to be her sword and protect her since she's actually pretty weak by herself. They have a nice, wholesome bond and the girl is very cute and starry-eyed like a kid in a candy shop. The action in the show happens to be pretty good too; there'san appropriate about of gore for monsters being chopped up with a greatsword. The skills and abilites are also very satisfying to see, especially in bigger fights with skilled opponents.
It doesn't do anything crazy new in terms of isekais, video game menus and everything; but it has the formula down pat and the enjoyment level up. 8/10; solid show that I hope gets continued.
Isekai... The genre that has been done so much, to the point that these days, one has to really hit a lot or marks, in order to not only stand out. But to be one of the more enjoyable and good Isekais, that you, or your friends, or anyone would be recommending to you, and that you should check out and watch, as it would be worth your time and more so. This is one of those shows. An Isekai with care and class, that makes it an enjoyable watch from start to finish. Let me explain how. Story and characters: 9 What makes this one stand outfirst and foremost is of course the concept itself. Instead of being Isekai'd into a OP person, child, or what not. Instead your a sword?! Finally, a different niche for a change! But that's not all, as you'll come to find with this anime, it's a coming of age type, it's a work for it, rather than seemingly being OP from the get go. The anime does a great job step by step, of showing off growth, and doesn't seem to be rushing things at all. That goes from the training of the sword itself, to Fran's journey in general. As if they're taking their time, and letting us see how the characters grow and learn, how they become strong as you will. Which will explain how they're good. Hard work pays off. Rather than already being the best, like some shows do. But let me go more in detail on these characters,as they're a highlight in themselves.
Fran as I've mentioned, gosh she's adorable. If one thing you may be watching this anime for, it's more to want to see her grow and develop. To see her finally evolve as she puts it. To prove any doubts, and doubters wrong about her, and her kind. That she can rise and become strong. But the best thing is as I've stated, is that we're gonna be right there with her. It's like the start of an RPG. At the start. you're decent, but you're hardly strong at all. While sure, in Fran's case, it helps having a strong sword, a magical one at that, but through the anime's story, it's really shown how the hard work of it all pays off and more so. As we'll see her go from the start of her journey, to hopefully where she wants to be. Not to mention how good of the team these two are, it's a team you can root for, and we're bound to meet many other colourful characters along the way, while cheering on this good duo.
As for the sword themselves, they're quite energetic, but with a good head, or handle I should say on their shoulders. Willing to support Fran on her journey, which is great to see, and also furthers my point in that they make a good team.
Art and sound: 8
I really adore the OP and ED for this one, it's got a great track, and is great to listen to. Much like the overall animation, that really blends well together throughout the show. There won't be parts in some areas, that will blow you away, but what is shown, is real care given to the look, presentation, and how everything sounds and blends together. It's really well handled, and will make the experience of watching this, oh so better.
Tensei is a real fun coming of age story, that'll be enjoyable from start to finish. I would recommend to watch it here and now.
What if I told you, there was an isekai, but this time it had a talking sword? You’d probably say something like, “How in the world could that be in the slightest interesting considering all the other isekai that exists?” You might think back on smartphone isekai or cheat magician. And, you might ask that of me, and I’d say, “Well… Uh-… I-I guess you’re right, it wouldn’t really work out, would it?” And wow, yeah. It would be as bad as you could imagine it to possibly be. But at least for me ~some concepts~ of Tensei shitara Ken Deshita (or honourably known as,Reincarnated As A Sword) work fairly well, yet, the ones that are bad are abhorrently… well, really, really terrible.
(There are some brief spoilers regarding the initial plot.)
<< Story >>
Reincarnated As A Sword follows the story of, you guessed it, an isekai character dying and arriving in a magical world by “you-know-who”, our beloved deity, Truck-kun. He’s been taking quite the break in the past couple isekai seasons, so it’s nice to see him again after quite a long break. Oh- wait- but I was wrong, it’s not actually Truck-kun, just a car that ran over a guy standing in the middle of the road for some unexplained reason. Anyhow, the first line of dialogue we hear from our protagonist is, “I died…”, further evident by the splatter of dripping blood and the terrible camera turning of what you’d assume to be a death from Goldeneye 64. Thanks, actually couldn’t tell he died. He is reborn in a fantasy world with the loss of his memory and his identity, but surprisingly remembers what a fantasy world is and what an RPG is, and is simply whispered to by what could be assumed to be the god(s) of the land as he awakens within a pedestal in a forest as a sword. A sword that is a so-called “intelligent weapon”, one that manipulates the ability of thought and can control itself physically through Telekinesis, a skill he’s given due to his race. We know as little as he knows when he arrives in this land, and as he’s suddenly approached by what the story says is a goblin (multiple of them) initially, a stock cartoon sound effect (the classic running one) plays before he cuts them down. Of course, this eviscerates my insides, because I haven’t heard anything close to a stock sound effect since Mairimashita-kun, which was legitimately actually funny at times. This type of humour persists consistently throughout the anime and delivers it terribly, the timing feels so out of place 90% of the time and that’s almost all entirely due to the dialogue and the unfunny “faces” that our sword protagonist makes. Nonetheless, a combination of these first few scenes are simply an example of what the following episodes are like, as it rarely flows properly in terms of mood, making it incredibly jarring and follows a similar “comedic path” that feels uneasily awkward for most of the time. However, it does attempt to bring in a somewhat heavy backstory between one of the other main characters, Fran, and uses her constantly as a device for sad and depressing scenes that reflect her unfortunate past and the problems within the world, which surprisingly help actually bring detail to the characters that exist in what would be society and its people. Overall, it seems to be uninteresting so far regarding what could even be called the “comedy”, but the world itself does further present a well developed magic/ skill system that isn’t actually that half bad, not to mention the world-building, granted, there’s not much, it makes me want to learn more about what’s there. However, some of it is simply too unbearable.
Anyhow, the story progresses with what could be described as his “training-arc” montage, until he meets the cute “Black Cat” mentioned briefly before known as Fran.
<< Characters >>
Beaten and kept as a slave, Fran is a “Black Cat”, a type of beastkin/beastmen that seems to hold little value in society. One of which many seem to be incredibly racist towards due to their lack of combat ability and general strength in the world. It’s constantly repeated by Fran how “no Black Cat has ever Evolved”, a form of levelling up, or ranking up to the next biological stage in strength, an ability that nearly all races appear to have, that is except Black Cats. And after finding our main protagonist, the sword, she wields it and becomes the owner of him, naming him to be “Teacher”. And thus begins the journey between the both of them. As a character, Fran isn’t half bad. To be honest, she’s probably the only relatively likeable character in the show considering she is quite cute and has a somewhat developed backstory. Of course, she has her moments throughout the first 3 episodes where it feels as if she’s being a bit of a sad edgelord, and granted, she has a sad backstory, sometimes it feels like the anime doesn’t know when to control or space it’s “le sad moments”, throwing you constantly between emotional scenes like: happy, sad, sadder, happy, intense, battle, sad, happy. Of course, one can understand her on edge reactions to strangers and other people, but sometimes it’s really off putting in the immersion of the anime when SHE IS CONSTANTLY SPEAKING OUT LOUD TO TEACHER. Does Telepathy even matter? She only seems to use it 50% of the time with him, but every time she’s relatively ‘around’ others, she speaks to the sword in public as if it doesn’t matter. Would the people not think of her insane, or at least would it not give away that the sword she’s wielding, the secret they desperately want to hide from others because it could be a weakness others exploit, is an “intelligent weapon”? Apparently not, because the people of the world are devoid of simple hearing abilities despite this cat girl speaking at a normal volume. This makes dialogue between characters feel out of place, naturally, and of course further makes it harder to like this anime when it does something like this.
The sword, dubbed to be “Teacher”, has a personality similar to that of Rimuru from Slime Isekai, except, every line that comes out of his metaphorical mouth comes to be the most awkward sentences and reactions to be seen in a long time. Sporting comedy that seems to be stuck in the 90s, his slapstick reactions to literally anything in the universe, wether it be a goblin spitting on him, someone realising he’s a magical sword, or being an annoying mockingbird during duels that Fran has, he makes every scene so hard to bare. There is very little that could be found to be interesting about his character other than the plot holes that are glaringly strong in his memory, in which he states in Episode 3 that he has no recollection of his past, but remembers that he’s apparently in another world- which doesn’t make sense? It’s no statement to say that the plot clearly isn’t trying to be the strongest aspect of this anime, but it actually seems to be the only thing that is decent. Paired with this annoying character of a sword, it makes me wish the second Teacher became wielded by Fran, he lost his ability to talk and all he could do was make motions mid-air or draw in the ground to communicate. It might’ve been boring, but it would certainly be less painful than this.
<< Art >>
The art. It’s good. It’s actually animated decently well, something that is typically rare, but surprisingly growing to be more common even in isekais that are considered of low quality. The fights are usually well detailed, obviously not to a high degree, but it keeps in a relative amount of detail when attacks or skills or spells are performed, showing how the environment is often affected and when wounds actually appear, they’re not just smudge marks, they actually have flowing blood at most times. The same goes for both enemies and Fran when she becomes injured. Having actually fluid animation makes this one of the more stronger points within this anime. However, the art style does not fit the tone, or even the intended tone of the story. It does not help it and curates this incredibly uneasy contrast between trying to be goofy and have fun, to being cute, perform fights and then suddenly depressing 50% of the time. This art style, or at least the way it’s utilised hardly fits the depressing emotions and story from Fran’s character it tries so hard to push on. It can reflect the story in fights evenly well and often have a fitting area for cuteness- but barely. The jarring switches between being goofy and being depressing doesn’t work for this art style, and makes it really difficult to invest emotion in anyone at all when it comes across as simply being cringe and painful to both listen and read. If it had adopted either changing it’s style to not just seem so “fake”, like it wasn’t simply something that’s a story and didn’t matter, or it not taking murdering monsters and killing things so seriously (queue Teacher’s line from Episode 1: (2:59) “I thought I’d feel more guilty, but…”), perhaps the art would be more fitting for the tone it tries to present. Nonetheless, the art style fails to present the serious tone that the story tries to exemplify within the characters, mainly Fran herself and ends up simply turning it into more of something that’s hard not to cringe at.
<< Music/ Sound Effects >>
Thinking about it, the OP doesn’t really fit the tone of what the isekai feels like it should be. Incredibly dark, melodramatic and trying to be serious? This feels more like the kind of anime that tried to be a parody of a parody and failed at even doing the anime part, let alone be a parody. Yet I’m not sure if it is actually a parody or not, and that’s where the tone of both the anime and the OP cross against each other. It’s recognisable the anime itself ATTEMPTS to be serious as a whole, implementing action and dark reflections of the past and juxtapositioning racism and so on, but it feels as if it misses the mark so strongly. However, the OP is actually pretty good, it’s not great, it’s not bad, but it’s decent. But it feels like something more of Re:Zero’s style with Subaru, specifically Redo. If it actually focused more on the serious side of the world and it’s heavy issues instead of throwing back and forth to awful and cringey comedy routine, it feels as if it could contrast with the same feeling Shield Hero had in Season 1 where it reflected a lot of slave trade and rescuing others and the weakness the protagonist holds as a person themselves. The ED on the other hand, it’s nothing to sneeze at, it bears more on the weaker average side of ED’s, in fact it’s probably just bad because majority of the entire song is Fran running on grass in the same motion over and over for a whole minute with generic ending song 15 from the early 2000s. Beyond the music, the sound effects are atrocious.
With attempts at using actual fucking stock sounds throughout the first three episodes as mentioned briefly before, the anime brings itself to a new low. Obviously, you might think this was a joke, no, it’s not in fact a joke, neither what’s stated nor what the anime tries to do with its terrible slapstick, is a joke. It is perhaps the worst execution of slapstick comedy to have ever been seen before and barely passes as something that could crack anything close to a grin. The sounds used supposedly for comedic purposes makes scenes extremely unbearable to listen to and read. Along with the switch in tones between both characters when reacting to one another or to an event from a different character, it makes it incredibly grating since the animators think it’s necessary for nearly everything to have sound.
<< Enjoyment >>
After Episode 1 finished, I realised I had to commit to the 3 episode rule. Then sit through so much unbearable cringe. I could not enjoy it. I didn’t, or at least, enjoyed very little. It was enjoyable seeing Fran when she had her screen time away from the thoughts of the annoying Teacher. She’s cute and it adds flavour to the rather bland duo that melds the both of them together. But of course, she couldn’t save it by herself, as she herself aside from being cute has her own issues that detracted from making the anime fun or entertaining, and often felt sluggish in certain moments when it felt like it wasn’t necessary.
Finally, simply to nitpick, killing goblins does NOT make you a “Kobold Killer”. Episode 1: (3:22).
(Translated directly: ゴブリンキラー = Goblin Killer. コボルドキラー = Kobold Killer.)
“If this is an isekai story, then I’ve gotta have some kinda cheat-level powers.” A bit too on the nose for an isekai to me. And the comedy is god-awful, if that’s what it could call comedy. It is a generic power fantasy that is literally nothing else but “Generic power fantasy + Deluxe Edition, a cat girl included”. It’s boring, yet has an interesting world, but holds literally nothing of value towards majority of the characters in terms of personality and development. Let alone the “sad” moments, which turn out to be too much edge even for a former edge consumer like me. It doesn’t utilise the seriousness it presents in a proper way which turns it out to be something like the later anime seasons of Tokyo Ghoul, except way more empty and harder to be compassionate for when Fran starts to sound whiny at certain point because of how much the tone shifts when she complains, making it incredibly jarring. I disliked this anime, and found it too cringe even for me. There isn’t much unique about this other than a sword being an annoying main protagonist, but certainly expectations for this weren’t high or particularly low. I went in expecting an isekai, and I got a little worse than what was expected. If you like anime with decent animation but godawful characters and you’re simply in it for the power fantasy, go ahead, watch it. There might be better anime, but at least this one has a cat girl.
I rarely write reviews for anime because as an OG with literal YEARS of watched anime under my belt these comment sections are usually just too much for me... Look at my profile, and you can see how little I engage in this stuff versus my anime experience. I felt like I had to chime in on this anime because of some of the vitriol that has been directed at it and the claims that "it is just like every other generic Isekai anime out there." I honestly can't understand the amount of hate most people are pouring into this anime unless they haven't actually watched it...TBH, my assumption is that a lot of anime fans struggle with self-aware anime and can't tell when something is deliberately playing on a trope in order to emphasize the differences; which brings me to my next point: this anime is NOT like all other standard Isekai anime.
Yes, the person is reincarnated as a sword, and the sword is super OP which might make it sound like an isekai with a minor twist similar to reincarnated as a slime (monster instead of a person). That; however, couldn't be further from the truth. Within the first few moments of the show they allude to many things which make this anime different. The sword's need for a wielder, dealing with how he is changed into the sword and it's effects on his personality, how he "feels at home" in the stone or a scabbard. These are all things told to you in the first few moments of the first episode that, if you continue watching, will illustrate how this show is different from a standard isekai.
To avoid spoilers I will lay it out simply like this:
1) The anime avoids overt sexualization of females, a harem concept, and a pervy entitled male protagonist who still can't actually make a choice on a woman or act on his desires.
2) The main character(s) and their relationships with others can make it questionable who the main character actually is; and the relationships in the story are a type of relationships not often shown/ explored in anime.
3) the story is not a domination fantasy where the character is OP and crushes all
Overall, this anime does bare resemblance to anime like: Reincarnated as a slime and mushoku tensai... but it also has its own unique flavor. Furthermore; I think that's pretty excellent company to keep.
Imortant points: -Not an Isekai (the story goes - The gods took a soul from another world, wiped his memories and made him into a sword. If you remove the "another world" part, everything stays exactly the same because his memories were wiped clean anyway) - No fanservice, harem, echhi. At all. Fans of aforementioned genres should skip the title and head to the garbage dump where they belong. - Generic RPG fantasy world - elfs, gnomes, magic, skills, classes etc. - Extremely poor/dumb/lazy writing. The worldbuilding, characters, motivations, dialogue, well... everything really is just dumb. The core ideas are not bad, their execution is. - Itis Wholesome. The heroine and the sword are OP AF and nothing bad can/will happen to them.
- The hero of the story is not really a sword but the catgirl
I decided to watch it because of the "wholesome and nice story in a grim world' idea. "Getting stronger, overcoming challenges", "Brutal murder of terrible people" and other things that make you feel warm, nice and fuzzy inside. And all of it is indeed there.
However! My god does the writing sucks. The sword is basically just what it is - a sword not a person.
He does not have a personality. He has no memories. Do not have a name, no personal goal or any real human thoughts or responses. In Pathfinder RPG there was an adventurer whose mind was trapped in a weapon and he acted as a person. Here the first thing the sword thinks after getting a generic lvl up by killing monsters around him - It would be nice to find a master who will wield me. Yes he is just an intelligent sword. Nothing more.
The world is DARK. Or rather it should be dark. Widespread slavery, genocide, various persecutions based on race or social standing, a world full of monsters who kill a lot of adventurers and regular people alike.
And at the same time, it is all friendship, pink ponys and rainbow atmosphere. People do not behave in an appropriate manner in such a world. Some residents of this "grim world" have morals appropriate for a peaceful developed country of our day. Not the brutal world where they exist.
It would take too long to list all things that could be improved by simply dedicating some effort to write a logically sound narrative without changing the main storyline. The bottom line - Extremely poor/dumb/lazy writing.
If you can turn off your brain and you want a wholesome and nice story in a grim world. Then I can recommend this.
For everyone else, it is a low-quality anime that you probably should skip.
Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken a.k.a That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. That's quite innovative for its time, plus Ranga as a huge but lovable doggo. Jidou Hanbaiki ni Umarekawatta Ore wa Meikyuu wo Samayou a.k.a Reborn as a Vending Machine, Now I Wander the Dungeon. Though the anime adaptation is coming soon, it's unironically the pinnacle of fiction that I'm so awaiting its eventual arrival. Kumo desu ga, Nani ka? a.k.a So I'm a Spider, So What?. Despite Millepensee's horrid-but-tolerable CGI, I can understand why the LN is highly praised for its originality. But what about Tensei shitara Ken Deshita a.k.a Reincarnated as a Sword? If I have to describe this show in the now oversaturated Isekai Reincarnation sub-genre, it is neither here nor there in the overall sense, only backed by wherever the plot that the original source novelist Yuu Tanaka wants to head towards directionally, and that direction is inconsistent at times. The best way to see this show is through reception, and as an example: ANN's Theron Martin, in reviewing Volume 1 of the LN, praised the character interactions with the action, and the little-above-average writing skills that showcase a somewhat limited world-building, but criticized the story's lack of originality, which is why you see those 3 sources right in the review's opening messages, being a copy-paste, jumbled mess-up of a concoction. The TL;DR is that Tensei shitara Ken Deshita is good in spots, but it's often a hit-and-miss affair, and it's down to your perception on how you are going to see this.
And honestly, my review of the show could've just ended like this, but let's take a dive into what's really going on in this premise.
The story (or the plot rather) is truly one of the epitomes of a lackluster setting of someone getting reincarnated from death in the real world, only to find themselves being an object of some strange kind. Could be a slime, could be a spider, heck, even a vending machine! But in this show, the typical MC instead becomes a sword that awaits its master while it does its own things to kill off time, defeating monsters and levelling up in OP-ness like who gives a shit about that. Eventually, it (or he) gets a new master in the form of a nameless Black Cat, said to be a beastkin group that has nothing but bad vibes and a reputation to boot, being the inferior race amongst all beastkin. After the sword repeatedly lunges towards its enemies slicing and gobbling up the equivalent of magic stones to store up mana for its self-sustained levelling up skills, it provides assistance to this Black Cat, shackled in slavery and torture to defend and attack against both monsters and its user's oppressors. And once it's freed from all of the torture that this Black Cat has been suffering for all her life, the nameless gets a name from it, and the student-teacher relationship of Fran and Teacher is born. And true to honest, I can live with this kind of setting as it presents a coming-of-age story with Fran as she deals with both her past and her present, proving that her lowly Black Cat race isn't one to be trifled with with the leading character being Fran alone to represent and stop the racism and bullying of her fellow tribespeople.
What happens thereafter is just a string of coincidences. Both Fran and Teacher a.k.a Sword Dad have that relationship that feels like a daughter-father dynamic, it feels satisfying to see Fran really grow up from her shackles of life to one that's constantly growing under Sword Dad's guiding rhetoric to lead Fran the correct way and not just to learn of what if right or wrong, like say, upholding one's own justice, for example. Fran's dishevelled look in the beginning may look rough, but as she turns from the dirty and unpresentable to a more fitting representation of a confident adventurer and gaining the attention of people from all walks of life, it's there that she becomes more attractive and attention-seeking in both good and bad ways, plus Teacher who is able to help her discern what she lacks, and makes for a character that you earnestly want to root for, becoming stronger by the day. The somewhat large character cast that serves as Fran and Teacher's waypoints, I'll just take or leave it, except for the exceptional few. One of them is the Rank A half-elf adventurer Amanda, whose both an ace and a philanthropist to an orphanage, taking care of orphaned children in great numbers. And likewise, she's the mother character when it comes to Fran, though the Black Cat herself vehemently denies her affection from time to time. But regardless, Fran's living her life alone without her biological parents who've been killed by humans, and it wouldn't hurt to have parental figures tagging along for progress, as she drives towards her goal of evolution, a feat that no Black Cat has ever attempted before.
Despite being produced by almost relatively the same staff team as Tsuki ga Michibiku Isekai Douchuu a.k.a Tsukimichi -Moonlit Fantasy- over at studio C2C, the glaring similarities are obvious at first sight, with the only difference being of the source material's writing quality. And as mentioned earlier, novelist Yuu Tanaka's writing is a touch above average...though come to think of it, it feels like it consistently needs plot movers to ensure it's always heading in predictable fashions, which explains the rather hit-and-miss feels of the show overall. But when you examine the production quality on its own, C2C has done a respectable job maintaining the feel of the LN that's translated onto the small screen. And for that, it gets a commendable pass.
The OST, depending on your taste of music, can also be hit-and-miss, as per the case for Sword Isekai here. For the yearly seasoned anime watchers, you will come to know that this is not the first time that both Kishida Kyoudan & The Akeboshi Rockets and Maon Kurosaki are paired together for a rockafella-like OST. In fact, both music artistes made their debut all the way back in 2010 with Highschool of the Dead, and in the years since, have made a name for themselves right in their own respective genres. For the former, having their songs be titled after respective anime that they have made their appearance on is the unique signature, and Sword Isekai is no different with the standard-ish J rock n' pop that the rock band is known for being decent in spots in every regard. For Maon Kurosaki, the last few years haven't really been so kind to her, with the last major hit being Toaru Majutsu no Index III's OP themes back in Fall 2018. And now with her ED theme song, she has finally hit her stride to produce yet another banger of a song that showcases Fran's journey from slavery to redemption. Really though, I have grown to love the ED more than the OP, that's for damn sure.
At the end of the day, we should already acknowledge that we're in a time where most of the Isekai sub-genres have been explored for seasons now, most being borrowed ideas with a few unique ones that stand out. Ultimately, it does and doesn't matter if your work sounds generic, all it matters is if the execution holds up to be worth of its enjoyability and recommendation. For Sword Isekai, I can't help but be like Humpty Dumpty sitting on the fence about what is/are good and bad about it, and my TL;DR is that while the main characters i.e. Fran and Teacher are a treat to enjoy, the rest of it just comes off as uninspired, something that we the audience have been a dozen times over, and are practically begging to see what makes this show (and its source material) stand out, only to face an eke of disappointment that the simple fact is practically in your face: a generic title that can be explored much, but severely limited by its potential for tendencies around the "Isekai Reincarnation" sub-genre.
If you're the kind of person who is willing to take a sacrifce for some enjoyment, I would say: Go for it. Sword Isekai is good, but not great. But if you're otherwise, then this show is going to bore you to tears by the time you're getting around the halfway mark. It's such a shame that the potential is squandered to stick to tried-and-true methodologies that work best, and while this does not look like an ugly duckling, it certainly is no swan.
Reincarnated as a Sword Most people probably would get turned off by "reincarnated..." on the title alone But honestly, this is one of those isekai that actually telling a complete story, with no your usual Edgy teenager self-insert protagonist and didn't betray their premises by turning the Sword into human so you can relate (Looking at you, slime) Because, well this anime basically Shounen wrapped in the isekai package Dead parent? gluttonous MC? start as underdog? Owning a unique power? yep you got it [Animation] 9/10 Hands down one of those studio you could see their effort being fateful and try their hardest to make the animation as well as they candespite the budget. The color palettes and overall animation are very standard but when it comes to action scene
You can see the effort they put into it from the choreography, cinematography, the composition, the cut, pacing, and overall tones
On top that, they even putt an effort to make a mob like goblin have individual design and looks different from one another. The use of CGI also very minimal which is quite a surprise considering Shishou design make him quite hard to animate.
[Story] 8/10
The story is your typical isekai plot, dude died and reincarnated to another world, but this time his new body is a sword. But unlike most isekai, he's basically a support character for the female protagonist and father figure of her instead being the main focus.
Meet Fran, a girl from the black cat tribe who lost her parent from an ambush of a slave trader and now living most of her live as slaves.
Until one day, when her caravan attacked by a monster in desperation, she met a talking sword and became its owner. She later name the sword "Shishou" and make a pact that she'll become stronger in order to evolved carrying her parent's dream and eventually prove that her race are not weak.
And so it begins, the journey between father (sword) and daughter (cat) as an adventurer throughout the world
[Character] 10/10
As I mentioned before, there's essentially 2 main protagonists on this anime "Fran and Shishou". The dynamic between them are really cute, basically a father-daughter duo who keep looking out for each other throughout the story.
Fran is a very stoic girl and most of the time seems expressionless, a lot of times she act immature as most 12 years old girl would act, exicted for a new thing, and genuinely have a good heart. Although she's snapped quite easily, especially if someone insults her race for being weak.
And there's where Shishou step in as her father figures, he teaches about lots of things, telling her the right thing to do, scold her for her misdeed and mistakes, and cook her warm food.
Shishou body is a sword, but he able to use telekinesis or manifest a ghost hand to do chores or just aid frame for her everyday life, Fran puts her trust 100% over Shishou and respect him a lot.
Even the side-character is not overbearing or annoying or over praise the MC and tell us every second how godly they are like you see on most isekai
Nell the guild receptionist is very respectable woman and a hardworking one with habbit to badmouth the people annoyed her, she's one of the people Fran saw as allies
Guild master always looks calm but actually suffering from headache from the trouble fran giving him
Garrus the Blacksmith who provides most of grain equipment is teaching both Shishou and Fran about the world
Donadrond the examiner a hard boiled Oni who approved Fran potential, but didn't hesitate to chew her if she's being reckless
Amanda the Mysterious half-elf who's seems have her favoritism toward MC
Spearbro and the gang an absolute comedic relief, and many more
[Overall] 9/10
This is probably one of isekai that's actually good and didn't make me angry for how stupid thing would turn later on.
There's no harem, there's no self-insert MC you need to relate, the character interaction is always fun and interesting, the MC is not overpowering and have to climb really hard to overcome their problem, and Fran is just top notch Cutie
Take the following with a grain of salt as this is coming from a fan of the novels. This is a story that seems pretty normal at first, and while it does not do an amazing amount to stand out it does everything it sets out to do very well. Give this story the chance and it will suck you in as you just want to see what's next and enjoy the father, daughter dynamic of the main characters. The story starts in a very normal and generic place but slowly works its way around to being a complex tale about relationships and individuality. Fran is notjust a tag along who is made strong but her sword but is a person who wants to be strong on her own as well, she takes time to learn and understand and the story puts both main characters as equals in their relationship even with the father-daughter dynamic.
The issue with anime adaptations is that many stories spend a good amount of time setting up the world and characters before getting into the story at large. This issue can be seen in many shows and the only way to manage it is to risk turning people away and playing the story at its own pace or speed the story up to get to the more interesting bits as the risk of coming across as rushed.
This story takes the first option and is not skipping too much, and I hope that it comes to entrance people as it did for me as this show has so much to offer. Is it a masterpiece? No. Is it a very well-made story that does the best with what it has? Yes.
Give this once a chance and read the novels if you can, because it will be well worth your time.
A solid premise with sound and rich world building. The concept is standard but progression is paced satisfyingly. The skill gains are frequent and distinctive enough to feel novelty during each encounter, and the main storyline is well integrated so far. The most distinguishing merit this anime has going for it is undoubtedly the writing of the main character Fran. The studio absolutely poured their soul out to methodically craft one of the best characters in anime I’ve seen. Physical appearance wise, you have the initial phase where Fran is shown as a slave, rugged and tattered. The choice of clothing design (tattered brown gown, collars ect)is implemented superbly to convey the helplessness of her situation.
When she receives her adventurer’s gear, it felt perfectly designed for her. All the accessories are visible and distinctive, especially the ear bracelet, a simple yet surprisingly effective accessory design that really enhances her character.
Throughout the episodes, more and more sides of her is slowly revealed to us: the joyous side when she receives thing she can only dream of as a slave, the determined side when presented with a challenge, and the cute reaction side to absolutely anything, all this complimented with outstanding animation.
Did I mention the f-ing animation? I won’t lie to your face and say this has god levels of animation, but all the scenes are done at a professional level…except any scene involving Fran. Somehow, the animation involving Fran transcends god level with movements both fluid and crisp. The amount of effort put into the body language and facial expression brings vibrance into the character. Even the most minute and subtle animation feels lifelike and absolutely compliments her character, a good example of one of my favorites is Fran’s ear twitch whenever she hears anything.
In STARK contrast, the other “MC”: the sword “Teacher”. Both the physical and character design leans towards goofy and casual, which isn’t a problem in and of itself, but for some reason it just doesn’t work in this anime. The sword almost always comes off as annoying or cringe, especially with its failed attempt at being funny.
Ultimately, the aforementioned point is nowhere close to a dealbreaker, and with all the good points mentioned, I can only see the anime getting even better from here. Whilst it is a shame that the sword could have been written in a much better direction whilst still maintaining the casual/goofy persona in order to support Fran’s persona, it would be a even bigger shame to miss out on one of the best shows this season just because of that. Even if nothing else, watching just for Fran and her animations will be undoubtedly worth your time.
Sword Cat Online. If you’ve ever found yourself asking the question “What if Kanna from Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid was a small cat girl wielding a giant, magical, isekai sword?” then Reincarnated as a Sword might just be the very specific answer to that specific question you’ve been pondering. One of two incredibly good isekai that aired this season, Reincarnated as a Sword might sound like a title conjured up by an isekai writer running out of ideas thanks to a very, very, VERY saturated genre, but if there’s something this anime isn’t lacking on it’s good ideas. The isekai genre standard is admittedly very (somewould say shockingly) low so you’d think an anime where the isekai protagonist kills a slave trader instead of buying from one, a lack of a harem that worships the ground the isekai doormat walks on or ecchi/rape fetish content inappropriately shoehorned in is a novel concept, but you’d be surprised how much more enjoyable a fantasy isekai is without those elements. In fact the isekai protagonist isn’t even the protagonist. He’s a sword. An over-powered sword yes, but his wielder, the lovable black cat Fran is the true protagonist.
I really enjoyed their relationship. Fran is child without any real education thanks to her time as a slave so she quite literally calls her new isekai sword “Teacher” because of his guidance. Teacher was a Japanese office worker and former gaming nerd so he’s mature and knowledgeable when it comes to stats and game systems (which the world revolves around). They have a sweet, master and student relationship yet, they continue to learn from each other in order to make Frans ultimate goal, evolution, a reality.
The rest of the supporting cast are surprisingly fun and eccentric. From Gallus the dwarf smith to Nell the passively hostile guild receptionist to Amanda the overbearingly motherly rank A adventurer, even though there’s nothing particularly new or unique about these sort of characters I didn’t dislike any of them. In fact I found the cast overall, very charming.
The anime does suffer from the video game-equse “leveling” and “skills” systems which I always complain about in these types of stories because it makes the protagonist ridiculously overpowered to the point where none of those systems matter, robbing the story from any tension. However, Reincarnated as a Sword does attempt to balance these issues by introducing consisted threats for Fran and Teacher to overcome and allies who are on par or stronger than them. Couple this with a consistent art style and some really impressive, well thought out fights and animation, and you have a really engaging, enjoyable show.
The anime isn’t without it’s flaws. Like I said, Fran and Teacher are incredibly overpowered at the beginning which makes some of their fights feel trivial. There are a lot of parts where the characters very unnaturally start spouting exposition/cooking instructions which ruins the pacing of some episodes and without spoiling anything, theres a moment in episode 11 which robs Fran of some development which I found disappointing, but I can’t really think of anything that stopped me from really enjoying this show.
Reincarnated as a Sword is what you get when you remove all the isekai anime bullshit the genre is known for and focus squarely on the characters and fantasy adventure. It’s not anything you haven’t seen before if you’ve poisoned your brain by watching a lot of fantasy isekai, but it’s incredibly fun to watch and that’s what matters. I hope to see more of the adventures of Fran and Teacher in the future with a second season.
8/10 Great.
I'm going to be honest, I came into this show expecting a generic Isekai that I could trash on. However, I have to say that my expectations were somewhat subverted. While the shows plotline might be similar to that of other Isekai or fantasies (with particular similarities in the earlier episodes to goblin slayer) the characters in this show are completely different from other Isekai. In reality, it feels as if the show is a fantasy first and the Isekai aspect is just a tacked on afterthought. Fran, feels more like the main character than Shishou(the person who was reincarnated) ever did. While this show is not going to win any rewards for complex plotlines, animation, or music it possesses what I could call a subversion of the darker aspects of the Isekai genre that I found as a pleasant change of pace. In a sense, this show is what you would get if you inserted "moe" into the Isekai genre and the results are really wholesome(at least thus far). Shishou's kind nature and helpfulness towards Fran is really cute and I cant wait to see where the show is going to go.
Reincarnated as a Sword is finally over and it is one of the weird reincarnation/Isekai entries. Story-7 A man dies and is reincarnated as a sword rather than a person/beast (in general). After reincarnated he finds himself in middle of a forest with all him prev life memories except him name. He accidentally meets with a Black Cat girl named Fran and Shishou (the sword) now shares his abilities with Fran and join the Adventure's Guild and journey together to make themselves stronger and evolve Fran to the next stage. The reason for how the MC got reincarnated as a sword is kept mystery and a smallpart of it is shown for a minute in a quick blurry flashback.
Animation-7
Animation is good and consistent throughout except in a few episodes for the char design for enemies.
Character-7
There is not much character development for the sword Shishou; by defeating the monsters he can gain new abilities from him enemy.
Where as for Fran, there is much. She is finally free from being a slave and is finally able to conquer her fear against her arch-nemesis. But most of the time she feels like any Shounen MC, where MC just think of food and fighting with a powerful enemy to make himself stronger.
Entertainment-8
This is one of the different Isekais; this makes it interesting as to how the story will progress. Fran is also not much intelligent as Shishou so this makes some good scenes. As the sword has an intelligence of his own so he makes some good supports in fightings. There is also a good amount of violence/blood for the rating.
Overal-7
This is definitely recommended if you are bored with day to day normal Isekais with only male MC as here there are both male/female MC. The pace of story is also good. Overally it is not better than some other entries in this category but is also better than some of the other ones.
Really a good show with a decent story! Yes, it's another isakai and many will turn away from those rather quickly. However I would like to say this one is actually well worth your time! The story is well written but not overdone, easy to follow yet does have it's tougher points. The story doesn't shy away from death and gore either although it's often packaged in a different way. With a clear notice that a second season will be coming it really makes it a complete story. The whole reincarnation story thing does get rather milked, but in this case it's something new as the reincarnation is into a sword. Not a single other anime did that specific thing so far I'm aware of. Usually it's a human, sometimes a beast kind. So a object is a nice change in that, although the OP thing does return which might be something that not everyone would enjoy.
Characters:
Fran is a slave at the start of the story, but manages to get out of this situation and throughout the story improve herself. She does tend to roll back into her old slave role at some point due to building plot. But gets out of it on her own power. Together with Shishou (the talking sword) she manages to get stronger and even be OP to some extend. Which might be bad news for the future, but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.
This anime has a long list of characters so I won't go into them as it might come with spoilers. But the default anime ideas of a jerk that thinks he's better then Fran and a overbearing mother character that isn't Fran's real mother are a thing. Also the other characters are mainly very common in any other anime. It however doesn't get seriously bad that it affects the story or how much you can like it. It would however help more if the story would handle the side characters a bit better and develop their stories as welll instead of being there as plot devices only. There are also so many side characters that it gets rather difficult to follow at times. While I'm not against having actual names and story to side characters, nor the amount on it self. I do mind that due to only 12 episodes none of them really gets much attention which is simply said a shame.
Sound/Graphics:
The sound is well done while the graphics are pretty normal for these days. I wouldn't call either bad at all. It does help that the music sometimes does play just at the right moment.
I really do think it's well worth it, please do yourself a favor and watch it to the end.
Surprisingly, the isekaied sword isn't actually the lead character for most of the story. The story is told from his perspective, but the plot itself is about Fran; the sword is content to serve Fran's wishes and pretends to be nonsentient when others are watching. But Fran being treated as the lead character is exactly what makes this series so good. She's a solidly-written character, and turns what would otherwise be an isekai power trip into a genuine and heartwarming rise of a hero. Her youthful innocence belies a level of bravery, ferocity, and cunning that even her sword is in awe of; yet the writing doesn'tforget that Fran is still a child, emotional and dependent on others. The combination makes for easily one of the best protagonists of a fantasy story, one who manages to feel cool and amazing yet genuine and realistic.
The sword adds a lot to the story too, even if Fran is the only character he regularly interacts with. He shows a level of love and care for his master that's delightful to see, and the two work efficiently as a team during fights.
The main con of this anime is that while the characters and the fights are great, the plot and setting are about as generic as you can get. Adventurer's guild, dungeons, goblins, levelling up... The same thing you've seen several times before if you watch a lot of isekai.
Sword, one of the most famous melee weapon and one of the most effective one, it truly is a thing that should be admired by many. This isekai just took that admiration to the next level, they don't have a swordmaker or swordmaster as an MC,they have a LITTERAL SWORD as their MC and somehow they still make it enjoyable. This thing alone already make TenKen a unique isekai, most of peoples probably already tired seeing so many isekai this years with the same concept of an overpowered HUMAN MC that either too nice or an asshole the same concept was implemented here but instead of an overpowered human theychoose to make an overpowered sword that's capable of thinking, using magic and BABYSITTING a cat girl as an MC.
What catgirl you may ask ? Well meet Fran,an adorable poker face catgirl that was a slave in the beginning yet her life changes 180° after she met our MC.Fran is also one of the point of interest in this series, beside the fact that she's much more of a MC than the MC itself ,her being adorable in almost every scene is already enganging enough to keep me watching the show.
But despite some unique aspect of the show,TenKen started and would pretty much develop in a similar way to almost every isekai, even the first episode feels very familiar, where our MC leveled up so fast from the very beginning just like most of isekai MC.The story will goes just like how a story of a child and his keeper bond.it's not the most original but then again, originality never really matters to me as long as it's good on what it's trying to be.TenKen is obviously a good isekai with a likeable character.
So in conclusion, it's either hit or miss, some people might like it,some people might find it boring.
For those who are looking for a heavy story, you can freely skip this one cause there's so much more anime with thicker plot than this anime that air this season
For those who love isekai, easy to please and don't mind watching an anime with lighter tone and bearable twist, please give this one a try.
Introduction I don't care what people say.. I'm here to make this anime justice! I can't even believe how such great anime gets rated 4 by certain people! This anime is incredible, and far from generic isekai story, as some people put it. The only generic thing about this anime is probably how overpowered the sword is, sword that that can be considered as the main character of the story (which may probably be a little bit weird for some, buy yeah.. it is what it is.. xD)
Storyline/Overview
But anyway, this is not even what matters on this review.. Let's get down to business... I felt myself even forced to ress this abandoned account so I could review this anime! Tensei shitara Ken Deshita is an anime, as aforementioned, FAR from being a generic isekai.. it's okay the sword is overpowered, which is a common cliche on the genre, but the sword tbt is not even the main focus.
Introducing the story, it's basically how this sword became the property of a Blackcat girl named Fran. (truth be told, due to certain hints on the episode, I kinda even doubt her real name is Fran, but anyway, that's not the important point here).
The magical thing about Ken Shitara, is that besides setting a rather unusual plot, where the "main character" is an unanimated object, it also shows a great character development within very few episodes, which is a kind of anime I REALLY appreciate; straight to the point. Of course this sudden growth in personality/etc might feel a little off for some, but it's still great to see that acting on Ken Shitara. The, let's say, real main character, Fran, shows some really exciting growth as the episodes goes by... Hell, she even faces an Upper Demon right off the bat on the first dungeon she sets off to explore.
There's also some spirit of companionship into the anime... most of the characters that are introduced try to support Fran on their own way, and the sword itself is no different. The sword always try to cheer Fran up whenever it feels something is off, and even gradually teaches Fran about all the skills it has.
Furthermore, Fran has some really strong character development during the fight against the Upper Demon. She says she doesn't want to rely blindely in the power of the sword, and wants to try to fight in her own way, without the telekinesis power of the sword and whatsoever; in a world where Blackcats are injusticed to no boundaries, this girl solely wants to be recognized, to become strong and even to be able to protect those around her by her own sheerforce, which to me is a beautiful and magical touch to this anime; another magical touch is how despite carrying an overpowered item, the anime tries to introduce characters, including allies that are on par with the sword's strength, or even beyond that.. It shows that the anime tries to bring REAL challenges to the main characters, even though they're already overpowered as fuck (probably, it's honestly still a real mystery on this anime.. lol, since the fight against the Upper Demon was rather early on the anime and still pretty difficult).
To conclude, I like that.. I like the straight forwardness of this anime and how it actually tries to bring meaningful challenges to the MCs; despite also having a pretty neat comedy and blending several genres together VERY well, not only the adventurous/battle thematics.. xD.. and also, there's this thing of dungeons, which sincerely even brought a somewhat SAO atmosphere to the anime, and also makes room of A SEVERAL WIDETY of themes that still can be approached in future seasons.. hell, this anime already even mentioned about the existence of the Goddess of Chaos so early on the series. This anime is seriously incredible guys, and still has very strong potentials of growing on plot in the future, it's totally worth the shot... This coming from a guy which have been pretty uncheered with animes overall, and I dare say this is probably the greatest anime of the season.. a hidden gem cloaked by the comeback of Bleach and the Premiere of Chainsaw Man.. again, this anime is DEFO worth the try!
I'll keep it brief: The most isekai ever-but HEY this time with a talking sword and a cute catgirl. There. That's it. Music is ok. Not distracting and the opening is pretty good. Animation is ok. Nothing to say about it. Story is eh. Sword that can absorb abilities (and have seemingly infinite mana) from creatures teams up with a catgirl who wants to be strong. Worldbuilding is generic and bad. Typical isekai world with barely anything noteworthy. MCs are ok 👍. Their motivations are decent enough, and the character dynamic is not terrible either.I appreciate that it's not very ecchi, a rare and sadly noteworthy characteristic amongst other much more horny, down-bad authors.
On the other hand, it was disappointing that the show avoided going a darker route which it could've easily edged towards given that some darker subplots were introduced. Ex. Could've explored the trauma of Fran's slave history more, and (Disappointingly light spoiler:) Fran having her hands cut off only to be healed a few minutes later. Could've been a lot more gruesome and the stakes would've been higher, hence making it more interesting--but no she was healed within minutes entirely with 0 repercussions. Author could've also had Fran struggle with the fact that she's endured so much at a very young age and that would be good. Anyways, so much more could've been done, but it suffers from the fate of most isekais: being generic sells, so why try harder?
Overall: Generic but if you really don't have any better isekai to watch and you like catgirls, then sure? Go ahead and watch.
5/10 for being pretty generic and not doing anything that stands out.
The premise and execution are surprisingly good; the fight scenes are quite good, the jokes land well and the animation is gorgeous. In general Tensei shitara Ken deshita is a lighthearted fun experience, something to turn your brain off and enjoy some action + comedy, and I find the comedy notably funny. That being said, Tensei is not perfect. There are lots of expositive dialogues, and the presentation is very lacking. What I mean by that is that the story is fun and interesting, but it is presented quite poorly in regards to the storyboarding. 1st example of poor presentation: The show starts with a scene that,in chronological order, is the post-climax scene from the end of the same first episode. In this scene, the viewer is greeted with an expositive useless monologue by a narrator; and then the show immediately proceeds to a flashback. This may be the single worst first minute in television history. There was no need for this, and presenting the first episode in chronological order, without a narrator, would have been a much better and, honestly, obvious choice.
2nd example of poor presentation: The 2nd episode starts with an expositive powerpoint presentation.
3rd example of poor presentation: Episode 1 kind of repeats the same scene - the mc killing random monsters - over and over again, instead of progressing the plot or showing us more interesting scenarios.
4th example of poor presentation: Episode 3 has 4 scenes in sequence about buying stuff - which is half the episode - and these scenes are ok, but 4 in a row is too much, you gotta space them out or the viewer gets bored.
This pattern of weird storyboarding continues throughout the show.
obs: The idea of of presenting the ending of episode 1 - or smthg similar - as the first scene is to be used in order to provide a hook for tension, suspense or intrigue, so this scene must be mid-action, instead of the calm post-climax first scene presented in Tensei shitara, which also has an obvious path between the flashback and the fastforward, thus providing no tension or suspense. For good examples: American Beauty, Fight Club and Jujutsu Kaisen.
Also, the difference between telepathy and inner thoughts is not clear, which makes understanding certain scenes a bit of a hassle.
Now, I like that the Mcs are not overpowered and frequently struggle, also I like that the anime is somewhat dark.
Futhermore, the mcs are good characters overall. That being said, they are not perfect and there are some scenes in which I believe either one or the other should be acting different according to their characterization. Moreover, the worldbuilding is the generic isekai - it does some things well and others not quite so.
Tensei Shitara also does a great job of executing and of being creative in the ideas it puts forward. Creativity in the details is a major selling point of the show - both the combat system and worldbuilding are generic, but implemented with creative details, with much thought put into, making them both more interesting and fun.
Unfortunately, the last arc is somewhat weak and even more cliché, and it ended the season on the wrong foot, lacking plot development. Also fan service is quite rare, but when it is present and regards a child, it gets quite uncomfortable.
In the end, I would recommend watching a single episode to see if you enjoy the comedy and, if so, I believe this is a good watch.
"REINCARNATED AS A SWORD" Genre- Adventure, Comedy, Action, Magic, Fantasy. With an unusual and fun twist in the Isekai genre, this anime makes you fall in love with its unique plot and adventure. Reincarnated as a sword in another world, Teacher aims to be wielded by a user. Having a conscience of his own, he seeks to get powerful enough to protect his wielder and thus takes on the journey to become the strongest by slaying monsters and gaining experience. With Fran, a Black Cat, as his wielder, he vows to protect her and give her everything she needs to evolve. And this is how the story ofthis reincarnated sword and this adventurous Black Cat starts. Embarking on their adventures and making friends along the way, Fran soon learns of the other side of life, one that was never given to her as a slave. One that only saw her as a product. And with this whole new life in front of her, she goes on to register as an adventurer, taking just a small step toward her goal of evolving. From hiding their little secret about Teacher being an intelligence weapon to fighting higher-rank monsters, you cannot help but get excited about everything waiting for them.
The best attribute of the whole series is that it does not dwell too deep into the characters' past. It primarily focuses on the main story after our MCs meet which, unlike other Isekai animes, clearly piques our interest and one cannot help but get excited. Also with flawless animation and post-production, you see a sense of finesse in the anime making it just the thing to put in your watch list.
This anime is absolutely a "MUST WATCH."
