Reviews for Suppose a Kid from the Last Dungeon Boonies Moved to a Starter Town?
Back to AnimeDid you want another fantasy with a main character that is perfect, and with a comedy that relies on people screaming and getting hit all the time and girls falling in love with this MC in two seconds? Well, my friend, this is your chance! If you didn’t, run away. Tatoeba Last Dungeon Mae no Mura no Shounen ga Joban no Machi de Kurasu Youna Monogatari (yes, I had to copy-paste the name because I don’t even know it, lmao, why do they make names like these) is a fantasy anime that is mediocre and poor, but not THAT bad. The story is the same fantasytrope: a guy, called Lloyd, who comes from a little town that wants to be its pride and joy by entering the hero academy. He makes a lot of friends on his way because of how nice and innocently pure he is, and the most important is that he is strong as hell and he didn’t even realize that, even being insecure about his own strength and power. The repetitive joke that goes around all the time is that he is soooo strong that everybody gets surprised when they see his huge power. Just another character whose creator is in love with him.
The story starts with a pacing that is chill. It is acelerated, but is not so rushed. Later on, by the third episode, it just explodes. The pacing gets real rushed and you don’t have a clue of what’s going on. A lot of characters, suddenly, change their personalities and they reveal their real personalities, and the funny part is that they are just dumbasses that start to behave differently. That was taken out of nowhere. One witch suddenly is a lost princess, one of the army (that is a potus for the first episodes) suddenly becomes some kind of traitor (or mister culprit, as they call him). And from one moment to another they are invading a castle and having a fight against a Demon Lord that has possessed the king. Wait a minute… what? Am I watching the same story that I was watching the last week?
Things like that happens all the time. One episode they are doing one thing, and in the next one they are in a total new stuff, and this is not episodic, this is just a bad work. Characters with no charism nor meaning appear like that and don’t contribute anything to the plot. They can’t stop over-joking, and in the next minute you are supposed to take them very seriously.
In terms of characters, what I want to center the most is how this work’s author don't have a clue. Not even one single woman in this anime is well writen, they are not even close to be decent characters! I want to start with the one I hated with my entire heart. Selen is the typical drooling dog that only cares about main character’s dick. She is the most freaking annoying, disgusting, shallow and pathetic character I’ve seen in a while. All she does is to talk about Lloyd, to follow him, to blush around him, to be useless and to do her favourite task: to keep away, to threaten and to act like a cringe yandere to every woman that wants to talk to Lloyd. It is so vomitive that I wanted her to disappear from the show. The worst part is that a big part of the comedy in this show is about her being disgustingly nosy, and meddling in Lloyd’s interaction with every human being. If you still think that this kind of jelausy jokes are funny instead of painful, I admire you. Selene was a princess who was known as the “belt princess” because she had a belt wrapped on her head that couldn’t be unwrapped, and she seemed to be an interesting character the first twenty seconds, until she meets Lloyd an he unties the belt and lets her free. She takes that as a sign of fate and decides that he is the love of her life. After that, she just becomes Yuno Gasai but without the killing, just the cringe part. What is it Yuno without her killing and her dark aspects? Well, nothing. That “nothing” is what Selene is.
At first I thought that those jokes about her being unbearable wouldn’t take a great part on the story, so I letted pass, but when I was about fourth episode and I knew it wouldn’t stop, I knew this was going to be really lame. When she knows the witch that lives with him, she totally freaks out and cries and makes a whole unnecessary drama. Even after that moment, they start to deal with serious matters, and she is just like “then… are you his wife?” and cries. STOP, THE JOKE SHOULD HAVE ENDED A LOT AGO. I want to think it as a joke; otherwise I will be the one crying.
The other females are a thieve that has not even one interesting feature but she is reckless and a hot mercenary. That’s all. Later we have the witch I mentioned Lloyd lives with: she is so clumsy and stupid that all the jokes that revolve around her are about her being beaten, her screaming, her insulting her boss (and everytime she does that, her boss appears and makes fun of her. All. The. Time), her tripping. For those minutes that I spent watching those scenes I thought I was watching an Adam Sandler’s movie. Only the fart jokes were missing.
The last female is the witch’s boss that has her relevance but that is only a loli that can’t be taken serious and that all she does is to praise Lloyd and to annoy the witch because she has nothing else to do. Amazing female characters, I’m so proud. Letting them aside, the other problem here is the dear MC, Lloyd. He is so perfect that it really kicks me in the masculine genitals that I lack. He is not interesting at all. He is just so good that everyone loves him for no reason. I just... I can’t say no more because this main character is almost non-existent.
The visual art is mediocre, is colorful just like a fantasy is, and soft; animation is nothing to save.
In conclusion, this anime doesn’t have anything good to rescue. It’s bad written, is disorganized, has terrible characters, lousy pacing and has like no story. Don’t watch it, not even if you love fantasies.
Hearing the synopsis of this anime, I was excited. It sounded like an interesting premise that I have always wondered about in videogames. The issue was the story and character design. If you want to turn your brain off and watch anime fighting I guess you could, but if you want an interesting story with characters that develop over time and change, this isn't for you. The crux of the issue is that the story is committed to keeping the protagonist Lloyd ignorant of his strength. I can tell without finishing, each episode will be him doing something "spectacular" while staying completely unaware of his superiority. Ifanything, he may discover at the very last episode that he is actually super strong, but I bet based on what I've seen so far, they will hint at it and then surprise surprise, he misses it again.
It's cringe-inducing. He isn't a likable character. He spends each episode talking about how weak he is, is practically brain-dead, and his dream of being a soldier is weak af.
This is more of a rant now, but since I've been so harsh I feel it's necessary to give an example of how they (not the producers but the light-novel writers) could have made this with interesting characters and an exciting story. Give the mc goals that aren't straight altruism, it's boring and unrelatable. Maybe revenge or a rival, it quickly establishes a long term goal, creates overarching conflict, and expands on the world (why does he have a rival? was he too weak and let someone die and their family blames him? etc...)
Now, with a character that has conflict that needs to be overcome, give him a reason that he needs to leave to achieve it. Rather than "to be a good solider and help people" he is "running away from a painful past" he could be "in search of a solution (item or person) that could undo the damage" or maybe "exiled, being hunted, and in hiding".
The thing is, he can still stay ignorant to his strength, at least for a little while. maybe he assumes everyone is hiding their strength, and doesn't trust them, staying quiet and reserve and on-edge. Once he sees people's best though, he can't stay ignorant, he needs to grow and part of that growth is to gain self-respect.
With all that power he has, does he become the villain? falling into temptation? Does he ignore the basics and then everyone outclasses him because he was too cocky and presumptuous of his strength? Does he hurt people on accident, and become an outcast in the world? Deemed a criminal?
The point is, you need a complex character that undergoes challenges that make him question who he is and why. You want something with change and movement because it creates drama and is exciting. The same OP hero that spends all day/night belittling himself isn't fun, its a cringy slice-of-life in a fantasy suit more closely representing the harem/echi genre. It's a waste of time to watch, I had more fun writing this than seeing that.
Comedy is Subjective. And the short answer is simple: Of course it is, don’t be ridiculous. Except when it isn’t. Clear? No? Oh...I thought this was going so well. Comedy is subjective because different people laugh at different things. That doesn’t mean it isn’t, nor does it mean there’s something wrong with our own sense of humor – it just means it’s not for us. Some people don’t find ‘Monty Python’ or ‘The Hitch-Hikers’ Guide to the Galaxy' funny. They are, of course, wrong because they disagree and that will never do. What’s that? I’m not the centre of the universe nor the arbiter of whatis and isn’t funny? Really? Have you got written evidence of that? You have? Oh okay, they’re not wrong either...it’s really not that complicated. Funny isn’t universal, it’s very, very personal. So personal in fact, that when someone doesn’t find a show funny they start issuing death threats and demanding the people involved be erased from existence. The effort and aggression people put into not liking the people who wrote/created comedy they don’t like is staggering and frankly a bit odd.
On the other hand, I’d say comedy isn’t subjective when it fails to amuse the people it was specifically created for. Let's say if you like a particular stand-up comedian and, in the middle of a funny set, he tells a joke which repeatedly fails to elicit a laugh from every audience he plays to, then it’s not funny. Move on. If you create shows aimed at the same audience who loves said shows and they hate it...it’s not funny. You’ve failed. Kill yourself, now. Do it now. Except...maybe you haven’t failed? Maybe it’ll find a different audience who’ll love it? Or maybe it won’t. Maybe I’ve no idea what I’m talking about and should shut the f*** up? On balance, that seems increasingly likely.
The point is, just because you don’t find something funny, doesn’t mean it isn’t. Unless the person was specifically trying to make you laugh, in which case it probably isn’t. Or you haven’t got a sense of humour. Or the person misunderstood what kind of thing you find funny. Or something else. Or possibly you’ll find it funny next time you hear it because you either didn’t get it or were too busy worrying about other things that would make your time more valuable. And that you can take it as a boon or a bane to your "funny" bones.
And now, back to Last Dungeon. Those recommendations you see that are similar to this show, they're oh-so-wrong. Instead, I'll refer us back to Spring 2018 with a little unknown show named Last Period, based off a gacha mobage game. To the minority whom have watched Last Period before, the similarities between this and Last Dungeon aren't that hard to match up with the same exact humor style of underlying fun with the silliness and stupidity cranked up to 11. Sure, what Last Period has an edge over Last Dungeon with lies in its blatant KonoSuba-ish tactic of references and puns strewn in for the comedic effect that fits and works, but that's not to say that what the latter lacked doesn't make up for in the comedic space. Last Dungeon rather, uses common tropes (in this case, a character that's incrediously OP on the outside and weak on the inside) and gives it the comedic push to good effect. It doesn't need to be "on the ball" or "over the top" like similar brethren out there, but it only needs to do enough to make it stand out from the crowd with the fantasy adventure meta lore, balancing out plot for comedy that doesn't feel like it's both oversaturated and stretched to the limit (though it can be felt at times).
If anything, Last Dungeon excels at its vast range of characters who each serve a purpose, even if they're nothing special to scoff at, other than the impending dumbfounded-ness that lingers at each and everyone's unique traits for timely comedic hilarity. Starting with the MC Lloyd Belladonna, you might think that he's the classic case of the usual OP character at first glance (and you're definitely correct at that), but take a look at the village that he lives in, and everything you see is the exact opposite. It's so easy to misjudge and label Lloyd as the typical OP-for-nothing character, but yet even when his ambition is made clear to protect his own village by earning his powers through hard work, that is a sign of the above-average generic character development that is a refresher in the fantasy landscape. Other than his non-common sense thinking that shrouds over the many girls that flout around him, I'd say that they have their strengths and weaknesses (although the one definite strength lies in the "intentional" harem): there's a loli grandma in a childlike body; a witch that beneath the coat lies a princess figure that otherwise is known for karma-cussing over the loli grandma for being Lloyd's guardian each and everytime; the occasional yandere "Cursed Belt" princess who always simps over the MC for a "white knight" appearance; the mercenary with one-arm whose love for money is unparalleled; and the strong girl with the fascination of matching her powers to the MC. Plus, the many side characters that serve to help integrate Lloyd into the human world, from the obtuse generics of a magic academy to the villains with hidden motives, everything is there to provide a course for the MC to follow and tread through, pretty much like a typical JRPG (but without the RPG elements). IMO, I personally love when characters make a mockery of themselves, only to be hilariously lambasted of the perceiving hitting rock-bottom when reality hits hard. Of course, they do show concern for one another when situations go off-hitch.
At first I was skeptical of the "quantity over quality" of Liden Films helming 4 shows for the Winter season alone, the likelihood of production teams crashing midway to meet deadlines is a serious litigation point in the anime industry. But surprisingly enough, Last Dungeon managed to stay consistent with its decent production values, not to mention the easily simple, yet recognizable character designs and comedic facials for the relentless comedy hilarity; good ol' adventure-fantasy labelled visuals that are pleasing to the eye, and the above-average animation to back this show up. Same goes with the music, which also is the average so-so quality that isn't worth remembering, but fine at best. My only plus point is Luce Twinkle Wink☆'s ED, after the Gamers! vibe of a nice ED, the same vibes carry over to this show, and I instantly fell in love with it from the very beginning. What a song to end each episode with the 4 central girls (Marie, Selen, Riho and Phyllo) for that harem take.
Once again, in the same slew and veins of fantasy adventure shows, the simple case of "Comedy is Subjective" goes straight down to the viewer, and that's for you to decide whether this is worth or wasting your time. If yes, then great, come along for the ride, but if not, this isn't the type of show you're looking for. To say that I recommend this "good" show is just undermining the significance of Last Period and similar contemporaries which may have done the comedy gag job the same or better. Try other similar shows first before coming back to this one, and see how your tastes vary.
After seeing 4 chapters of this anime, I can say that he exceeded my expectations, a protagonist with abilities that surpass anyone who thinks he is weak, an unenthusiastive waifus conqueror. The supporting characters are just as entertaining, they know above all the potential of the protagonist and the kind. The mood of the anime is quite good compared to that of Konosuba or Priccone. The development of these first 4 chapters leaves us with the aspirations of the protagonist, we also find unexpected situations throughout this story, in short a great anime of the best of the season at the moment. Waiting for itto continue in the same way and a possible sequel.
This show is bad. Why you ask, one of the most important things in an anime is the characters and the mc obviously, good animation and sounds are nothing without characters that you will be happy to see, not like this pathetic garbage excuse of an mc Lloyd. I understand the idea of an op mc who is oblivious about how strong he is and the harem around him (not that I like it too much) but in this show, they took it on a whole new level I am pretty sure that the mc doesn't think that he was in adangerous situation in the first 11ep and he is just dumb, not the funny dumb but the annoying kind of dumb, the kind that if the show was good it becomes horrible because of this dumbness.
Enough about the bad mc, the story is trash, we hardly know anything bout the villains and suddenly
(spoilers) they are doing it for Lloyd just because (end of spoilers)
yeah sooooo this isn't even the type where it's bad but you can watch it to waste time no, please don't watch.
This show is awful. This is my first review so bear with me, but I just feel like I should warn everyone who is considering watching this show, and explain how dreadful it is. There are many ways I could describe it but awful is the most generous. Now I enjoy an overpowered MC as much as the next guy but holy cow this show is so boring. From the characters to the monsters, everything just feels lazy. For goodness sake throughout the first 4 episodes, the only monsters we get to see are giant grasshoppers. Not only are the characters and monsters boring, butso is the plot. In fact, the pacing/storyline is so bad I've almost seen 1/2 of the show but I still couldn't tell you what's going on.
The only reason I'm still watching this show is so that I can brag to those who haven't, telling them I've gotten through one of the worse shows on all of MAL.
I'll get to it straight away. This is not worth your time. It's best if you just watch some small clips on youtube or something. The story follows a boy who believes that he is weak just because everyone else between him is strong. To put it in perspective, he is level 99, while all the others around him are level 100. But because he has low self-confidence, his level gets reduced by 20. (btw, there are no level concepts in the series itself, I was just making an example. Don't misunderstand.) It's a great and unique concept... but the story itself is just a pile of clicheand bad plot. It's a shame because if it had taken itself seriously, it would've easily become one of the greatest zero-to-hero stories. But instead, we got a "comedy" anime that isn't actually funny.
The characters are pretty boring and forgettable. They are all one-dimensional characters that are trapped by their archetypes, not being able to develop. They don't develop because the series needs to run the same old jokes over and over, and developing just one character would ruin the entire formula of their joke.
The animation is decent. It's stuttery at times, and even has a lot of off-model frames, but it's decent. Don't expect too much.
The music is a mixed bag. The ost is dogsh*t, even insulting at times. It's just fart noises and vibration that makes the action feels... comical, but not in a funny way.
The OP and ED however are complete bangers. I could play them on repeat all day and still not find them boring.
The enjoyment I have here is non-existent. The first few episodes, 1-4, had me laughing and had me hoping that this will be a good anime, or decent at the very least. Oh boy, how wrong I was. The middle to the end is so boring that I felt like I wasted my time watching it. There wasn't any tension to the serious scenes at all since we all know that it will end in a comical way. Also, the jokes that were funny in the first few episodes are beaten to death, stretched across the entire season.
It's annoying, making the same jokes over, and over, and over, and over again. I'd laugh way harder if I saw a 2010's Dinosaur meme.
Overall, just like I said, don't watch this anime. If you didn't listen, then that's on you. Prepare to get bored in this anime if you decide to watch it.
(3.8/10)
Tatoeba is one of the hidden gems of the season, plain and simple. It’s nothing revolutionary or mind blowing, but it’s fun, and at the end of the day, that’s what anime is about. What I like most about this series is the fact that it doesn’t take itself too seriously. Tatoeba knows it has an OP protag with a harem and all the generic fantasy tropes that we’ve come to expect from this genre, yet it pulls them off in a satisfying way. The effective use of comedy and banter throughout the series creates a really fun and light atmosphere that makes every episodeseem like a 5 minute short. The characters have their own fun quirks and feel unique in the context of the story, and their relationships with the MC, are a blast to watch. The story isn’t much to write home about, but you won’t even notice because you’ll be too busy laughing your ass off every episode.
The technical aspects of the show aren’t anything special, there’s one notable fight towards the end of the show, but that’s about it. The art is a really cutesy modern style which I enjoyed, and the OST is pretty good as well. On a side note, remember when anime didn’t have to boast the highest technical stats for it to be enjoyable? Tatoeba feels like a return to that. Good old fashioned fun.
I can’t recommend this show enough for someone who’s looking for a meme in anime form. If you want something funny to watch and just turn your brain off to mindless entertainment, this is it. It’s been the highlight of my Mondays for the past 3 months and I will definitely be sad to see it go. Tatoeba gets 8 snake belts out of 10.
Alright the fourth episode dropped today and if we are lucky, next week that won't happen. I figured that I must be looking at this too harshly and that maybe it was just a light hearted comedy. But even the attempts at satire are cliche and painful. Four episode is really my bottom line and after cringing so hard at the end of this arc, I just have to give it up. The idea isn't a new one but there is always a possibility that it can be good. Every season of anime has a couple of fantasy titles from small books or manga that popout of nowhere. I think the original artist might have made some good content so I don't want to trash on this that badly but the character development and design is poorly executed. It's like the main character is bipolar, one second he's crying and running to his room, the next he is running around trying to save people, acting heroically, and then giving lectures about how people should behave. I know it's supposed to be a bit but it all just falls so flat. Everyone praises this kid for being so strong and you just don't get anything out of it after the first couple times it happens. Nothing is done with this strength, it's supposed to be the main emphasis (I think) of the story but it ends up hindering the progress to the characters and the story.
Every character just loves the main character, and while that's not always bad, in this case it makes everyone one dimensional. With a story like this, I normally assume that character development should be the way the story moves but that obviously is not it. Someone might have some background of being heavily bullied but after one encounter with our main character they go crazy over him thinking they are the love of their lives. From completely depressed to over the top hyper and at first I thought this could be an interesting character personality but nothing happens... None of the characters really interact and bounce off of each other, their personality is dictated by the main character and it does nothing for me.
What is the story? For real can anyone tell me what the over arching plot is? Ok I might be too hasty here but the first arc does nothing. You shouldn't make the plot about defeating strong enemies while the main character is op and finishes everything with ease. Some shows have a coolness element or character development or tense up to the last moment type of story but this has none of that. First arc is finished and I'm left wondering what the last three episodes were for. At least the first episode introduced characters to us. The last three episodes built up some back story that looked like it was going to be the focal point of the story but all of that ends in a couple minutes with no story progression. It leaves me wondering what was the point of it all?
Ok Ok some people just like a casual show to watch that doesn't need to be the next S tier. I understand that and if that's your cup of tea go for it. This anime isn't going to provide you anything new or exciting. It's a fantasy anime which is already enough for most people but if you are looking to actually watch a show and be an active watcher, honestly don't bother. Characters are static, story is boring, the comedy is god awful but hey it's still anime!
Tatoeba Last Dungeon as I'll call it since I can't bother to write the entire name, is an absolute dumpster-fire of an anime. Lets start off with the story. First few episodes were decent, it wasn't incredibly fast paced nor was it downright slow. It was doing good. Then after episode 4, everything goes downhill rapidly. The plot was incredibly confusing, fast paced, and overall, shit. In terms of comedy and jokes, they're just nonexistent. Art and Sound: Decent, I guess?? There's really nothing to say about them, they're both mediocre and middle-of-the-pack. The Characters. Oh boy. I don't know what to tell you besides them being utterly shitty and unlikeableto the core. Our main character of this anime, Llyod, may be strong, but is completely oblivious to it. You'd think at some point, he'd realize, but NO. It's incredibly frustrating to watch him do something amazing and badass, and yet still be completely oblivious. And that's not even the worst part.
The side characters are just as worse, if not, even worse. I absolutely hate Selen. Words cannot express how much I want her gone from existence, but I'll try my best. All she does in the anime is literally just fawn over Lloyd to the point that it gets so repetitive and annoying. Like, ffs, please just do SOMETHING that isn't "Llyod this... and Lloyd that..." The other characters are incredibly generic, boring, and not interesting at all, so I won't even bother talking about them.
Overall, Tatoeba Last Dungeon is, as I said, an absolute dumpster-fire. I highly recommend you stay away from this anime, and instead, spend your time on an anime that is actually good, entertaining, and not a waste of your time.
honestly this anime is the same thing over and over again, OP mc is OP and doesnt know it, this gag is repeated over and over and i get sick of it, it was funny the first 2 times after that every time it happened i wanted to just ditch the anime. i dont usually drop animes and i was determined to watch this through to the end because i had nothing else to watch on a monday afternoon. the charcters are boring and just a massive cliche with every single cliche haram girl you can imagine, it wasnt even a good cliche because we didntsee anything good, yes im a degenrate.
its boring, repatative and mundane, i really hope all the good reviews on this are satire because i cringe just reading them.
stay clear of this anime.
Tatoeba... is for me the hidden gem of this season. For a while now I have tried to find another show that is similar to Konosuba in both it's comedic style and my own enjoyment and I think I have found this series. The makers of this series are quite knowledgeable about comedy and that is shown how much better the timing and spacing of the jokes is compared to most other comedic series and even the manga this anime is based on. As someone who has performed as a stand-up comedian for more than 5 years, I can truely admire the craft in thisseries. They have taken jokes that were in manga (f.e Lloyd killing nonchalantly giant insects or curses that were put on Maria/the eastside witch) and made it more visual, better timed and overall a stronger joke. I have high hopes for this series after 4 episodes and I predict that it won't disappoint me in both the comedy and it's enjoyment even after 8 more episodes.
Even though personally this series for me is 10 out of 10 series, I would more critically give it 9 out of 10 mainly because it's main flaw is the overall story of this series that is a bit too cliche and a bit too basic for me. But because my enjoyment when seeing this series is still quite high, I don't see it as a massive issue that this series has. It could be that after I have seen all of this series I might see this flaw as a more glaring issue or not an issue at all. Will see. Depending on that I will rate it differently after I have seen whole series.
Overall it is quite well crafted series with its cute and quite good art style and with fun characters that end up in all sorts of funny situation. I recommend this series whole heartely to everyone :)
Okay I understand why this show gets so much hate, but honestly it wasn’t that bad. This show is in my opinion perfect example of stuff to watch if you want some cheap entertainment. It’s generic, sometimes annoying, predictable and LOUD with clché Japanesse anime style of homour. On the other hand humour knows no bounderies as many of reviewers already said and it worked for me although it was too much "cringy" sometimes. On top of that it looks good, has some enjoyable characters (some not), solid sound effects and if you won’t take it seriously and mainly don’t expect too much you got exactlywhat I said. It doesn’t mean it’s a good show at all tho. There isn’t anything else except of nice animations and humor which would make this show more enjoyable and these are primary aspects which somehow carries whole anime.
STORY: 2/10
It’s obvious story is not main focus of this piece of "art". You can predict almost each exciting moment like fight, small dramas or another plot. Thing is it doesn’t take itself seriously and I didn’t mind. Even if I roughly knew what will most likely happen I still enjoyed the outcome, because it was well presented. Each problem was solved with humorous outcome and thanks to this it fulfilled that role of comedy on point. Adventurous part of the story was dissapointment, becuase there is not much of a world exploring and adventure as such at all. Story is pretty fast pacing and almost every problem is solved in one or two episodes and you got another right in next episode. This is typical thing for medicore and generic fantasy shows.
CHARACTERS: 5/10
One of the bigger issues for me was main hero. He did not have single enjoyable or interesting character trait. He was just prototype of boring fantasy MC, but even more dumb and dense. Even that style of humor which was applied on his character wasn’t my cup of tea. Other female characters had mostly one thing in common and a that was obssesion with our MC. It was like watching some talkshow with Justin Bieber where he surprises his maniac girl fans. Except of this insanity each girl character had some trait which make her fun (OK Selen is exception). We don’t really need to speak about antagonists, because they are here, but they’re so much forgettable it would be waste of time. Shouma gets almost no screentime to introduce his character and you only know him as brother of MC which turns to evil just like that. Overall characters were mostly fun at that time of watching, but after i get some good sleep tonight I’m not gonna remember a single shit about them.
ART: 8/10
Hurrah, at last another thing you can actually appreciate. Animations looks good and that goes for fights as well. On the other hand it’s from big studio and producers made in year 2021, so nice animations are somehow expected. That doesn’t change the fact it looks stylish and it’s probably the biggest plus.
MUSIC/SOUND: 4/10
Not my type of thing and something which would make me thing about it. OP is like you would pick some cliché isekai song to copier, find some generic singer to sing that crap and put it right there. This is appliable for every single one song in this show and OST was terrible even more. Sound effects throughout the anime were on point unlike that music.
ENJOYMENT: 6/10
If you are reading to this part, maybe you wonder why I wrote it wasn’t so bad and then shit talked so much on this show. Simply because there are undoubtedly lot of thing wrong and I cannot overlook them.
Despite this I had fun and it’s mainly because of it’s humor, ease and almost no expectations from my side. As they say in my home country „if you don’t expect anything you cannot be dissapointed".
Overall: 5/10
For sure not type of thing for anybody. This show is definiton of contradiction so it’s purely subjective. Thanks to this I cannot recommend it to anybody and only to people with "wider" spectrum of sense of humor. It’s solid thing to watch if you look for something easy which doesn’t require a lot of your attention or simply as I said in the beginning if you look for cheap entertainment.
First things first. This is a light-hearted comedy. Don't go in expecting deep storytelling and grand adventures. The tags on MAL don't do it justice. The show is focused on what it wants to tell; the life of this village boy who goes to city. It doesn't pretend to be an epic adventure and it does not have to be. There are bad anime, average ones, decent ones and great ones. This is a decent anime. Nothing more and most definitely nothing less. The story is about a boy from a village who goes to a city to fulfill his dream of becoming a soldier. He isthe weakest of all the residents in his village. However, he turns out to be the strongest person the city has ever seen.
People don't watch slice of life comedy for groundbreaking character development and grand overarching plots. I will rate this for what it is; a slice-of-life comedy set in a fantasy setting. This is a show you would watch when you want to unwind and relax whilst enjoying a nice cup of tea.
I am seeing more and more people whining and moaning about fan service across this site. In what universe does this show have fan service? Am i the only one who is not getting aroused from every single anime in existence? The term "fan service" is overused and meaningless at this point. In fact, if you see someone complaining about it in any anime, odds are that there is barely any (if at all) and some puritan is trying to live an Amish anime life.
I'd rate this a 7.5, but MAL doesn't have that option so i will rate it a 10 instead.
P.S: I love the Amish. But i don't think they will even see this review anyway.
tl;dr: An anime that is good at using one narrow kind of comedy but doesn’t do well at anything beyond that. This anime is centered around comedy involving the protagonist, Lloyd, being overpowered but not realizing this and considering himself weak due to his background and immense naivety. There’s some variety to this, in that he’s overpowered at quite a few things ranging from fighting monsters to cooking and cleaning. And there are lots of characters that react to all this in different ways. Still, at the end of the day, that’s what the core of the anime is. If you aren’t fond of such humorthen you won’t like this anime. I enjoy this type of comedy and the execution here was pretty good, and thus enjoyed most of the anime.
Beyond that it does try to flesh out other characters at least somewhat. It’s not particularly good at anything serious, but when it’s just trying to make the cast amusing and fun it can work well, the best example of which is the hilarious yandere Selen who is surprisingly chill. Characters can also have pretty amusing dynamics, such as between the also overpowered airhead Alka bullying Marie, a witch that tries too hard trying to seem cooler than she actually is. However, it does try to give some characters depth in a serious manner at times and that generally fails pretty badly, though it isn’t focused on that much so it’s not too much of a problem.
Plot wise, the first two thirds of the anime don’t really have much of a plot at all. It’s just Lloyd and company dealing with a bunch of random situations. There are some hints here and there that they’re all connected to some overarching plot, but that doesn’t really take up much time so it doesn’t really matter. The last third of the anime however focuses much more on this overarching plotline, at the expense of not having as much comedy. The comedy it does have also starts going in different directions. I suppose the comedy was getting stale as there wasn’t enough variety to it so the writer thought it would be better to start changing things up, which is fair enough as the comedy was starting to get kind of repetitive and thus not as enjoyable. However, the overarching plotline is pretty terrible and new directions the comedy went in aren’t very good either, so in the end it still feels like the anime considerably declines towards the end.
The art and animation felt pretty lackluster. A lot of the time the half hearted art and animation actually work well with the comedy it’s going for so intentionally or not it works as a plus. However, the one thing that is pretty prominent all the time and bad to the point of distraction is how the characters often have weird proportions that look really off. The characters designs in general are decent enough I suppose, though nothing particularly special. The soundtrack is okay but not particularly worth mentioning. The OP and ED are also okay in terms of the song and visuals, but don’t really stand out at all.
I dont really think this anime deserves its low ranking. Let me tell you why. Let me get this out of the way: there are very legitimate criticisms that can be leveled against this anime. It's trite. It doesn't really have a plot. The characters are one dimensional and exhibit little to know growth throughout the whole thing. If this were trying to be a serious anime, it would be a 4, ,maybe, if I'm generous. But here's the thing: it's not. It's not a serious anime and it's clear that this anime has no intention of taking itselfseriously, and does not ask you to either. It's a lighthearted, comedic romp whose sole purpose is to make you laugh. And, at least for me, it succeeds in that completely.
You can tell it's not serious because most of the characters are named after chemical compounds or elements.
So just take it for what it is, a humorous , slightly parodic romp loosely based on the fantasy genre, and you'll probably be entertained, expect more out of it than that, and you'll hate it. Personally, I took it for what it is, and laughed all the way through.
Okay, first and foremost. This is not your typical adventurous, thrilling, story rich, etc isekai-like anime. In fact, it weighs more to the comedy aspect. This is not danmachi or such. From the reviews, everyone can see that they just simply hate it for not meeting their liking requirements. Okay, back to the series. This series brilliantly combines the typical fantasy story but with many eccentric comedy twists, so don't expect huge action happening. You can imagine konosuba? This one definitely not konosuba, but you can expect the comedy but much more eccentric. You're disagree with me? Itsokay. It is kinda hard for comedy shows to be acceptedby every audience, especially with some eccentric style like this where the common genre is rather more adventurous and the audience also demands something like that. Even I see many said DKNN is boring. I guess this is more like love it or hate it
What to expect?
1. Comedy twist in every episode. This series brilliantly could twist some thrilling events into comedy stuff.
2. Funny voice acting. So many reaction like "hogeeee" "fuweee" and many more according to the situation
3. OP main-protag which does not realize how strong he is so he acts like kinda innocent and pure little boy
What not to expect?
1. Story. Srsly, the story is in famine even if raw chicken from hell's chicken exist it will eat it in tears.
2. Amazing vibe-ous background theme song. The bgms are there, but not that memorable.
3. Story. Srsly
I know this will be a divisive remark, but I think this show is trying to do something similar to One Punch Man, but with the standard Harem Isekai tropes as well. To that effect, I think that under certain circumstances this show is very high quality and manages to succeed in this endeavor. I watched this show at 1.5x speed on dub. That being the case, many of the jokes managed to not only land, but occasionally catch me off guard. In particular, the absurdity of some of the scenes, like a belt talking about its grandchildren, in the moment may not seem completely absurd, but it quickly builds until a genuinely funny joke appears when you were already somewhat cracked. I am a somewhat cynical person and force myself to be more understanding for many of these reviews, but I genuinely don't see what it is people complain about this show for. The writing isn't the greatest ever done, but this show is just one in a series of many of the "OP Humble MC" verse, and it manages to at least entertain while it does it.
The characters are almost entirely waifus that shotacon over the MC, regular guys with zero libido, villains who are evil for one reason or another, or the unsettling people from the MCs village. There is an argument that some of the women being so much older than the MC is creepy and I would agree to an extent if it wasn't so clearly only used for humor. The characters are utilized in a simplistic fashion, usually relegated to being "how different people would react to the strange event" writing, but this ends up only being a reflection of the relatively peaceful setting of most of the show. Whenever a genuinely important story beat is occurring, there is usually some distance put between the characters and their personalities do interact with the situation in meaningful ways. However this can't be said for some of them who get in similar positions multiple times (Marie and Mikona).
The characters have a generic fancy school uniform, and the important characters have distinct fancier clothes. It does make visual delineation between important and unimportant characters faster, however it also somewhat removes us from the experience if you are left to dwell on it for too long. Characters often are drawn off model, but this is oftentimes a shorthand before they devolve into chibi for a comedic reprieve. There are some jarring moments where the animation is lacking, but this show is not one to suffer from slideshow syndrome. We are unable to witness most of the usual animation stuff we would like to see, but that is in part due to the in-universe explaination that the characters are so powerful that dust kicks up whenever they break something, or that their actions are so fast as to be unanimated / instantaneous to keep with real time.
The production on this is a bit lackluster. It is the same generic artstyle of most fantasy shows released over the last decade, bright and saturated color tones, fields of wheat and towns built of grey cobblestone, wood, and red tile roofs. The artstyle of the forrest near the MCs hometown has a beautiful painted look for a few of its scenes, reminiscent of the painterly art of "Made in Abyss", but that is quickly replaced by normal fantasy fair later on. I wish it had stuck with the look for longer, like Grimgar, but it turns into a standard show.
They are definitely setting up for another season, and I don't think I will skip on it when it comes out. While this isn't a masterpiece, I think it is a great little romp through an LN premise which anyone who enjoys anime would find fun and funny. The gags at some of the episodes genuinely made me laugh out loud, I can't get enough of this show... And I doubt I wouldn't find them funny on a repeat watch.
Though I do not know if this is the author's original idea, I believe that to enjoy this anime to the maximum you can't take it as a fantasy type anime with comedy elements to it, but instead you have to expect a gag comedy in a fantasy setting. I remember in the early episodes a friend of mine complaining because he felt that a gag appeared to soon and ruined the characters' development and the more deep side of the anime, but I disagree and say that the more serious scenes in this anime serve only as a set up to the gag, inthe way that the contrast of them both is supposed to make the gag funnier. Now, does it do it successfully? Not really. They repeat this formula too much, and don't really execute it that well.
At the end of the day, none of the characters are really remarkable, the art is okay, the background music is okay, but they aren't a big deal. This is those animes that you watch and within two to five years you won't remember that you watched it nor any of the characters in it. It's not necessarely bad, but it's not memorable either.
So, if you have free time, have already watched almost every single anime on earth and just feel like watching something light to chill, sure, go for it. If you have a 50+ Plan to Watch list, honestly, put it at the bottom of it, or don't put it at all.
PS: If you truly want to watch a gag comedy in a fantasy/ isekai setting, I'd recommend something more like Ixion Saga DT, and not this one.
This anime fits right into my kind of show. It has a super-strong main character along with all the females falling for him. The storyline isn't the best, but they make up for that with really enjoyable scenes. Although, I hope there will be a bigger plot to follow in the coming episodes. The main character is portrayed as super strong and unique, as all the females love his personality. However, I wished that he would beat his opponents more easily (as in the arm wrestle), as the whole idea of the story is having an overpowered character. Where can I find more like this?!
