Reviews for Hyperventilation
Back to AnimeHyperventilation is a short, mature, but very well done love story captured in under 20 minutes. The series shows the development of what we can only call a "relationship" between the two main characters, albeit a rather short telling. I really enjoyed this directing style where we are shown the past and present in chopped up parts, and by the end they come together almost like a puzzle. I don't find the fast pacing or cuts to be confusing at all, it only made the story more interesting. The artwork is simple but clean. The animation itself goes from being slightly stiff in slower moments, to morefluid in what I can only call fast paced things (wink wink). The voicing is nicely balanced with the sfx, I was also very very pleased to hear "Clair de Lune," which I think was a really good choice of bgm that most definitely gave this more depth.
The main characters themselves are likable but quite boring, that's probably because we don't get to know them past the surface level though. Myeongyi is quiet and tends to be alone, whereas Seonho is more outgoing and usually socializing. There isn't much to explore there as far as I'm concerned.
I thoroughly enjoyed this though and have watched it maybe 3 times? My horrible fujoshi side aside, I think overall it's definitely a cute but far more mature take on romance, if you can even call this romantic.
I would recommend this to people who want immediate sauce gratification. 8/10 ヾ(。・ω・。)
And HOW I am going to review this? I don’t know. I only know I am happy for those two. I hope they find love after years of longing and possible loneliness. What is this? This is an experience. It is intimate and explicit. Slow and fast. Beautiful and raw. What this isn’t? This is not an experience for homophobic people or minors. What did I like the best? Tying past and the present as the story progresses. And the ring moment on the station. What did I like the least? It is too short. (having the urge to cry) I want tosee more of their psychological attraction to each other. Oh, and at this point in my life, I don’t wish to hear Moonlight Sonata anywhere, it's overdone, but here it's nice.
it's good! i enjoyed watching it a lot. the art style is very clean and aesthetically pleasing. i really enjoyed the visuals in this, and it was hard for me to believe that this anime and the manga were created by one person. though the animation gets janky at times, i love the style and the colors used. the story was very short, but sweet. i liked the story it was trying to tell about the two main characters, even if it was very indulgent and the characters were somewhat bland. (also, the title is genius). the voice acting is pretty good, and i like how emotive myeongis, despite the lack of time we spent with him. clair de lune is also a wonderful piece that i think fits this anime very well. (now, when i listen to clair de lune, i just think of this anime0.
overall, i enjoyed it a lot. it wasn't anything spectacular, but it is a pretty good series of shorts.
"Hyperventilation" has a lot of story and content considering its length of six very short episodes lasting only a few minutes each. You're given enough time to get to know the characters on the surface, and Myeong (the main character) slightly deeper than that. Until I read the manhwa that came out after the animated episodes, I was disappointed that we didn't get to see more of what and how Seungho is thinking. But, like I mentioned, the story is fleshed out a bit more in the manhwa, so I absolutely recommend reading that, too, as a complement to watching these six episodes. The art in"Hyperventilation" is incredibly pretty. I liked the fact that there was like a light-blue filter over the high school flashbacks, it made it all look so much prettier for some reason. There isn't much to say for the music considering there's literally only one piece of music that's repeated in certain scenes (Debussy's "Claire de Lune"), but the music came in during certain parts where it just made sense. The use of that one piece in these episodes was very good, in my opinion, tying things together and making you connect the dots.
Overall, this is a much recommended watch. In fact, I'd recommend watching it all AGAIN after watching it the first time. I did this, and when I watched it through again so many more pieces fell into place in the puzzle that is this story. Brilliantly told, even though it was unfortunately short and I would've wanted it to be a little bit more fleshed out.
Very short, but sweet. A part of me wishes that this was a longer piece of work— so we could have more time with the characters —but I think the short running time does give it its charm and it also makes sense since there is a manhwa, which probably goes more in-depth. I loved the art style and the music choice (even if it's only one song). And I love the way there are flashbacks to them back in school in between what's happening in the present, really explains why they both act the way they do with each other and how feelings have beenfestering until the reunion.
Overall, I definitely recommend watching this.
Also, the ending had me screaming dsjfjfhsdk I felt bamboozled lmaoo BUT! check this out. It’s a super quick watch.
I strongly recommend this anime (Gwahoheub and special chapter, if possible to watch it at once). It is a masterpiece. I'm surprised it has such a low score. It´s very tender and romantic. It's a shame it's not a longer series, and actually, I wonder why there are studios that do that kind of anime too short. Maybe they are made by beginners who don't have much budget but have a lot of talent. I don´t know, but there are very few works with that quality and sensitivity. It's refreshing to see something done differently than Japanese anime. The expressions on the faces and thenaturalness is something that they have captured perfectly. Once again South Koreans show that they know how to tell stories. Bravo!
Beauty in simplicity. This was a short and sweet series, about two men getting together at a high school reunion. There are only six episodes clocking in at three minutes, so not one that takes forever to deliver. And unlike “Mignon”, the other boy love series by the same studio, director, and writer (I think…), this one does not take to the last episode to deliver the goods… if you know what I mean ? (it is rated "R" / "adult", after all). It also has less going on, which is not always a bad thing. You want boy love romance? Well, here you go! No gimmicks,no myths, no taboos, no third-party rude romance-crashers; just some minor drama to give the story life and a little depth, and then off they go!
The story is presented non-linearly. We start with their high school reunion, and viewers follow as the men drift towards each other and hook up. After that, we are treated to a series of flashbacks to when they were in high school. It’s nice that we do see thoughts from both; where they came from to contrast where they are now.
Neither thinks the same, and I like that. It hints that one man was not ready, as a teen, to accept that he is gay. While he struggled with thoughts of loving a man, he still did not act like a total douche; we see a few instances where he helps the other. The other teen, on the flip, had thoughts of “impossible”, and had a lack of self-worth, especially with a medical condition that makes him a social pariah at times. None of these flashbacks takes very long, and a lot is up to viewers reading between the lines and body language, so take my words with a grain of salt! I might be wrong; I was distracted by the sexy times too. ?
I think the two weakest aspects of the story are developing the relationship and the soundtrack. While we can see the attraction the two have for the other, it could use the benefit of a longer runtime to show or tell viewers what it is they see in each other, other than superficial looks. Though I could argue that this is merely the beginning, initial stages of their romance, that only later will it deepen and grow roots. That that particular story is for another time, or our imagination. I could buy that, if only I didn't want more!
As far as the soundtrack goes, it is very sparse. I do not recall hearing any original soundtrack; the only music was of Claude Debussy's "Clair de Lune". It was still well used for mood and contemplation, and I guess my only complaint is in comparison to "Mignon", where effort was made to have an original soundtrack. So not a real big complaint.
And in the end, all told it takes up about 20 minutes, and is a sweet touching story, with some sexy spice to mix it up and satisfy a fujoshi like me. I recommend to fellow fujoshi, and if you want to try and get your feet wet in a simpler BL story, this might be a good entry.
