Reviews for Frankenstein Family
Back to AnimeStory- 9 art- 8 characters - 10 enjoyment- 8 overall- 8 What can I say? I really got exited for this anime, at first I thought "great another funny slice of life anime". I was really wrong about it. The story is about a boy named Deniss and his 4 siblings who were turned into monsters by their parents. the show shows how they suffer and try to live a normal life as a "human". the backstories are great too, they show how the characters had to cope at aa young age with their "psyhopatic" parents. The ep are quiet short and they left me empty after watching them, thestory also doesn't have a "main point" I mean if you refer to (little spoiler) Deniss is trying to change his siblings back to normal then it has, but often times eps are about random stuff. Well it is still a slice of life
the anime is actually of chinese origin that's why many watched only to ep4, since that's the point were curently is translated in japanese. If you don't want to wait you better just watch the episodes in chinese since it ended airing.
Frankenstein Family is an extremely rare Chinese manga adaptation that focuses on family bonds and maintains that every episode. The short 20 minute episodes successfully trim out harems, convoluted love triangles, confusing plots, and fanservice. The plot itself is slice of life level mediocre, with the monster family's focus frequently shifting in different directions and the child genius main character Tanisu causing those deviations by always being 100% child and 0% genius. I still watched it every week on release day because it reliably showed them facing challenges. The art scrapes the barrel pretty low where instead of making full use of the fact thatthe characters are monsters living on a Chinese island, it feels like a barely interesting waterside town you can find anywhere. I suppose this is the most they could afford for a strictly promotional anime released simultaneously with the Japanese manga serialization. I'm personally very fond of woodwind, and they use it effectively in the show, however it does not work effectively in more dramatic scenes.
The main cast are innocent in the truest sense of the word as they are the results of scientist parents who viewed them only as test subjects but love them unconditionally. Which is ironic considering that they spend the entire show being suspicious of all the intensely generous people around them, creating a fulfilling sense of tension. You'll notice that the family hangs out together all the time despite them frequently getting into spats, and I think it defines their love much more vividly than other family focused anime. My favourite character is the plant-girl Ashise-neesan, and her character is summed up in what she's introduced as the siblings are fighting: "Ahh! The sunlight today tastes like strawberries!" The show is isn't changing anyone's lives with it being a cashgrab, but it presents a fresh approach to characters that I definitely want to see more of in the future. Is it worth your time? Sure.
Concept: good Execution: absolutely terrible The first four episodes are full length and actually pretty good. They get you hooked into a story with what looks to be an overarching plot. Then it takes a complete 180, the episodes drop to 12 minutes or less after intro/recap and the other half of the 23 minutes are live action interviews with the voice actors talking about random stuff. I wouldn't have minded this as much if the story didn't feel like it suffered from it. The lead up to the climax of the series is based off of characters acting completely contrary to what we have seenthus far and SURPRISE //spoiler warning// they start acting like themselves and everything goes back to normal. Additionally, the loose ends this series leaves is simply startling. Not a single question they brought up during the whole series was answered. The end of the series feels like they cut off 3 minutes too soon, if not a whole episode too soon.
The art also slowly went downhill as the series progressed. The final episode was startlingly different animation than the first four. It feels like the budget was slashed halfway through making this anime and forced the animators to cut episode length by half for the second half of the season and then even that wasn't enough...
I really wanted to like this anime, but I have never been this disappointed in an anime's execution. To prove my point, this is the first score of 2 I have ever given and the first time I felt compelled to write a review.
This Is a show that I saw the art and description for It and I got really excited. Well, the 4th episode aired 2 days ago, To put It simply, This Is kind of a disappointment. I don't know how to properly explain It. But this show gives off a weird atmosphere to It. While some shows ( I.E Demi-chan wa Kataritai) Can give this nice friendly and energetic atmosphere. Shiyan Pin Jiating" Gives off I guess empty feeling, Nothing about this world feel really complete to me at least. Two things I feel that contribute to this being such a disappointment are: MC: The Mainperson the show focuses on Is just annoying. He's some little kid that for whatever reason Is In charge of the rest of his Teenage family. I genuinely think he brings down the rest of the show, Just by being there. He's also not needed. The show could've easily remove him and focus on the other characters that are better.
Expectations: I got the Idea that this will be about a group of mutants going to school and getting used to the new environment while also dealing with any prejudice or bullying for the fact they are very different. I thought the Blonde tomboy would be the main character with her brash personality, Caring little for what other people think. The story would be about her going to school with her family appearing every now and then. She'd also be getting friends as time goes on.
That's what I thought we'd be getting. Something of interest. But No, We got this really boring setting where everybody Is just lazying around an apartment and some annoying kid being a brat.
I also noticed that all the female characters In this, I actually like them from their personality to character design. But from what I've seen of the boys, They just aren't great.
There are also some dumb things happening like some grown-up, Harvard graduate and she freaks out and does one of the most cliche villain monologues of the anime season.
The art Is really the only thing I can give props for, Without any negatives really.
Overall, This show can be summed up as "Disappointment" Sure there are some funny moments, But that doesn't really make up for the rest.
I went into this not sure what to expect. The premise looked interesting so I figured it was worth a watch. This turned out to be one of my favorites of the 2018 spring lineup. It's a shame this flew under the radar. It being a Chinese produced anime that was never picked up by any English licensers/streaming services most certainly contributed to it's obscurity. This is yet another twist on the "monster girl" genre that seems to be ever growing in popularly. This time the main cast are siblings that all have some sort of experimental modification done to them. All but theyoungest sibling, Dennis, which is simply a genius. He is the one that tries to hold the whole family together after their scientist parents are sent to prison. It takes a very human approach of looking at the characters, and what it means to be so different in a society that doesn't accept their differences. I couldn't help but relate to some of these characters, as someone that doesn't always fit into society myself.
The animation is not spectacular, but the art style gives it some charm. I'm assuming this didn't have the big budget that most mainstream anime has. If this is the case, I think they did a pretty good job with the resources they had.
I have to mention the OP. It was one of my favorites of spring 2018. What's interesting about the opening is the singer is bilingual in Japanese and in Chinese. She made a version in Chinese and in Japanese for each dub. I thought that was pretty neat.
While not a 10/10, it's unique, and charming. I'm glad I took the time to watch it.
The problem with so many normies swarming anime so much lately, is that great anime like these go unrecognized, lately more than in past years. Sucks, doesn't it? The story is touching and deep, the plot is great, which is not something I say often for non Japanese anime. However, the styling of the characters is well performed, the seiyuu work is great. (A little awkward at times, given that this isn't a Japanese anime.) Some smudges on the animation, and timing/tempo. However, putting those aside, and considering the fact that I literally had to take a break from anime because there just weren't goodshows that season or the one before) I have to say. I wanted to cry a bit during this anime.
So if you're looking for some cartooney, anime like naruto or something boringly popular like a dragon maid, then this is probably not your anime. This one is more of a FEELS and depth kind of anime
So yeah, maybe it's not a 10/10 kind of anime, but those six elements MAL asked me to review are definitely 10/10 to me.
[MINOR SPOILERS ON SOME ASPECTS WITHOUT CONTEXT] A premise with great potential yet a rather mediocre realization - this is how you could summarize Shiyan Pin Jiating, a.k.a. Jikken-hin Kazoku, Creatures' Family Days, Frankenstein Family. And while awkward pacing, somewhat bland characters, and some inconsistencies could spoil your experience, the top-notch art and fabulous background music do kind of make up for the shortcomings. What you will eventually get is a quite enjoyable, high-budget anime based on a Taiwanese manga, dubbed in both Japanese and Mandarin Chinese. Story [6/10] The story starts off with five siblings living on their own after their parents suddenly "disappear" one night. Thetwist is that four of the siblings have been modified in experiments conducted by their scientist parents, whereas Tanis - the only one left unmodified - tries to keep the family of five together.
Entering into this young family's daily life, you fairly quickly get to see the complications of being non-humans, still trying to live a normal human life. And this is what Shiyan Pin Jiating is about much of the time.
In the meantime, a seemingly deeper story unfolds rather awkwardly where you will get a load of background, some action, bit of romance, a few touching moments, and a rather abrupt resolution of matters.
It appears that the creators of this anime tried to fit as much story into the shorter 12 episodes (~15 mins each) as possible - which consequently led to a rather arbitrary line of events which just doesn't seem completely right. For one part, you will be left off with a handful of unfinished subplots. For the other part, you will see climaxes here and there. Yet these climaxes seem to pop up out of nowhere, and may be forgotten in the next instant.
We can conclude that the story has a great and interesting premise; but how the storytelling might be too fast-paced and could use some more elaboration and refinement.
Art [9/10]
Produced in collaboration with Chinese internet giant Tencent, you get amazing high-quality artwork which even looks incredibly detailed at 1080p resolution. The character design is somewhat simplistic, yet mostly appropriate. What really stands out is the background design - you will be able to catch a gorgeous, colourful glimpse of a suburban Asian (probably Chinese) scenery with great attention to the details.
And if you happen to love food, you will also cherish the mouth-watering food shots which seem to promote Chinese style food throughout. You'll also get to see some great sunsets with fabulous lighting effects!
Sound [10/10]
Another strong point of this production is the great background music:
Being mostly simplistic and acoustic, you will hear tunes reminiscent of calm nature. Harps, piano, flutes, and other tender-sounding instrumentation do create a relaxing ambient with some incredible crudeness. And the timing of that music is near perfect in that it seamlessly supports the visuals.
Character [5/10]
What's a bit disappointing is how many of the characters turned out:
Dull, inconsistent, and moody, although the idea behind them is quite interesting:
Main characters (siblings):
Tanis, 11 yrs (youngest son): He is the only one who got spared from the experiments of their parents. While he definitely cares about his other siblings - he cares a lot - Tanis still has random outbursts of his "inner genius" where he can turn into the most arrogant, egoistic person ever. When this does happen is not obvious.
Snow, 17 yrs (oldest son): Being gentle in nature, Snow is a were-dog and is often found in his dog form, a snow-white dog. He seems to care a lot about Tanis, but what his individual personality is like only shines through too rarely.
Suishi, 14 yrs (youngest daughter): Having the ability to read people's minds, Suishi is a tacit person. Although she might not be very likable due to her character, Suishi could be the most well-rounded character among all others. She does seem to look after other people when necessary.
Ashley, 16 yrs (yellow-haired daughter): Being part spider, Ashley is a tomboyish tsundere girl, often bickering with others. She wouldn't be the kind of person to accept criticism or compliments, but still seems to appreciate the latter. Unfortunately, her overall character seems to be unbalanced since you wouldn't always get why she behaves the way she does.
Ashisu, 16 yrs (dark-haired daughter): Ashisu is more of a calm type, maybe too calm it seems unrealistic. She is a plant-hybrid and may therefore have been given a kind of naturalistic, overly soft character. Aishisu seems to develop more character later on though.
Some non-siblings (to give you an impression of the characters):
Person A: That person appears one day, and she has a kind-hearted character. She might be important, yet the anime fails to explain a bit more on that.
Person B: A hateful person playing a minor role - quite a good contrast to the MCs
Person C: A bit dull, but overall okay
Person D: Didn't quite get her personality
Parents: Not the most loving ones - at least we don't get so much to know about them as to be able to tell
Voice Acting [6/10]
Remarks: I started out with Japanese audio, but changed to Chinese due to circumstances
The voice acting overall is quite okay, although I prefer the Chinese dub for some reasons:
There was one moment, in particular, where the Japanese audio was practically mute for about 20 seconds, whereas the Chinese dub had some narration. Another thing I found better in the Chinese dub is how the voices fit their characters - which might be because the anime itself had some more Chinese aspects than Japanese.
Another thing that slightly disrupts the flow of the anime is that there seem to be gaps in between people speaking. Whether this is to hint at the possibility that real conversations also have some thinking pauses is unclear; but it is definitely not something you might see in Japanese anime in general.
Overall Enjoyment [7/10]
If you are a passive, casual watcher, then this anime is definitely something for you:
- It is a slice of life type with some drama and comedy
- It has very beautiful artwork and relaxing music
- It has a rather strong focus on the cultural aspect (especially visually)
- It tries to deal with a rather intricate topic: being different
- There are some moments which you can get quite absorbed into (probably even shed tears)
- The story doesn't require you to focus on every detail
- Episodes do not rely too much on previous events
- Episodes are only about 15 minutes long
Here is a few things to keep in mind:
- Don't expect too much; this anime does have plot holes and some inconsistencies
- It is not the standard Japanese anime, even if you opt for the Japanese dub
- There are some peculiarities/awkwardness (either of cultural or unintentional nature) which you should be ready to accept
Notes:
- Japanese and Chinese OPs are the same song with lyrics in their respective language
- Japanese and Chinese EDs are fundamentally different
Shiyan Pin Jiating (2018) A few versions exist, the actual show is 15 minutes an episode or so but some are full length if it has the voice actors having a sideshow too. The show has probably the worst cliff hanger ending I have ever seen in a show period. The story is essentially, neglect, abuse, trauma, a bit of PTSD and finding themselves with no resolution to anything. Also, the Sumire girl is definitely going to be leaning forwards with an NTR in her future, some deep dark stuff going on there. The story is very unfinished and rushed if it had been full lengthperhaps it could have been okay.
The art is pretty nice and a good standard although nothing special.
The OP and ED are both nice, generally, sounds are nice and the voice actors have a legend for if you have seen Inou-Battle wa Nichijou-kei no Naka de and therefore know the character Hatoko Kushikawa her voice actress uses the same voice in the exact same tone for playing Ashise. Saori Hayami does an excellent job with that voice.
Characters are all generic despite their extra abilities with some very childish style acting going on. The characters are somewhat interesting and lead a fairly good show but so many holes and unanswered questions remain behind.
It is a fun enough show to watch but I don't expect it to come back. The show had greater promise had the length not been so short and if it had answered more and not had such dark things like the NTR screaming out for the future.
5/10. Watch it I guess.
There are a number of reviews already here, but I thought I'd contribute anyway. Shiyan Pin Jiating (or Creature Family Days, or, even weirder, Frankenstein Family) is a slice of life anime that, thanks to limited budget and an inexperienced staff, comes out completely average. Now, most of the time, being disadvantaged like this usually results in a bad anime; however, the plot and characters of Creature Family Days is what saves the show (to an extent). Firstly, the story. The story follows a simple plotline - monster children attempt to live life on a nearby island and learn about human culture without being found out. It's not a highschool anime, and I've seen some people salty about that but really? We don't need more highschool stories, and I'm glad they let the characters explore the island as a whole, because it brings a sense meandering tranquility fit for a slice of life. The challenges faced by the characters often involves forming new relationships and questioning the decision to distance themselves from their origins. It's not a spectacular plot, mainly because the pacing is a bit wonky in some places, and it ends on a very uncertain tone. Saying anymore would be spoilers, but it does leave you with some questions.
Art and Sounds are both mediocre at best. The opening is probably above average for me, but in anime sound design is not notable, and the animation quality is well below industry standards at times, likely because its an original chinese animation with an inexperienced crew and low budget.
The characters themselves have serious potential. I didn't dislike any of the characters, but some of them, Snow in particular, didn't have very strong or deep personalities. There were nice touches of character development, particularly for Aisley and Ashie and their sister Suishi. The main character, Tannis (or Deniss, depending on your subtitles) was handled...somewhat poorly. On one hand, he's what 9? And therefore, definitely for the most part, acted like he should. He makes some rash decisions, and can be tunnel visioned at times, and DEFINITELY should NOT be responsible for a group of people up to nearly double his age, and the show demonstrates why. But on the other hand, he doesn't have much beyond those traits. He's a sympathetic character, but maybe not a good MC. He demonstrates above average reasoning for someone his age (especially when contrasted against someone his actual age), but he's never given a chance of out flashbacks to demonstrate his full potential.
Overall, I liked this anime. It took me forever to dig up all the japanese audio episodes, but I did anyway because I was enjoying it so much. Overall, Creature Family Days is a average slice of life that has/had potential because of its characters and fantastic premise, but mediocre execution, and a poorly paced plot. Watch it if you need some time to kill and want a no-action non-plot heavy show. Otherwise (and it kind of hurts to say it) probably just skip it.
Ok, this review is long overdue, but screw it. Shiyan Pin Jiating is a pretty enjoyable slice of life donghua. While I do find the art to be pretty good, the sound is good as well and the characters are very likeable, the major sticking point was the story in each of the episodes. Art: The art style is pretty good and it does give an impression that it's an animated version of a real life place being filmed in. The animation is also alright as well and given that it might be a small production donghua, unlike bigger productions like it's fellow donghuas 'King's Avatar' and'Mo Dao Zhu Shi' and the Japanese SOL counterparts like 'Wotaku' and 'Tada-kun', it's impressive.
Sound: The OP is great actually. The song is good to hear and actually describes the donghua as a whole. For sound effects, they're alright.
Character: They're the selling point. The four siblings (barring the genius kid) are all genetically modified by their parents and has to live the lives of being monsters in our world. The characters are very likeable and have fun and unique personalities, yet relate-able since their actions have consequences in a world that never accepts people in the outlier. You can tell it's a good Chinese donghua if the character's actions are given consequences extremely realistically (Sorry Japan, had to poke fun at you).
Story: Now this is the main point that kinda put the score lower. If I have to summarise, each subplots have introduction and conclusions and while they're good, the problem is that there seems to be a lack of body, if any. There's some subplots that has a good introduction only to straight up cut away to the conclusion, which is jarring and out of place. Being that each episode is only 15 minutes as opposed to the 30 minutes we expect from... most cartoons we watch around the world, this doesn't help and was one way that held this donghua back. I read the manhua a bit (they're all in Chinese so I could only guess what they're saying judging by their actions) and given the implication at the end of Episode 12, I think just cramming many subplots in those 15 minutes episodes kinda made everything rushed and honestly not that worth it overall.
Overall: This donghua is pretty enjoyable aside from rushed sub-stories that caught me off-guard. The characters are likeable, the art is excellent and the sound is good
To be honest, the premise is very charming and even cute in my opinion! In fact, it was obviously the whole reason I wanted to check it out because I thought it would be in fact, very cute. And it was! ... Until episode 8. But no spoilers, let's get to the review yes? Story - 5/10 Now if I was only rating the first half of the story? It would easily be a 8 or 9 out of 10. It essentially features the daily slice of lives of this dysfunctional family, how hard it is to adjust as being literal result of science projects and cutefamily bonding. I absolutely loved the premise and how they pull it off, it has some problems or clichés (like the obvious shoved in crush character for the main char, etc etc), but they're very easy to ignore for the pure fluff and sweetness of it.
It goes downhill around... Episode 8 or 9 and, that was the whole reason my score knocks down so badly. I won't spoil if you want to watch yourself, which I do still recommend, but the drama that happens is, in my honest opinion, pretty bad and could've been easily fixed and the execution was frustratingly poor.
Art - 5/10
It's nothing astounding, the artstyle is cute! But, that's all it is. It's pretty cute, there's not a whole lot to it.
Character - 7/10
I actually think each characters are charming! They have distinct key little personality traits to distinguish them from another. Like the hot-blooded, reckless sister, the optimistic kid main character brother, the airheaded happy sister, so on and so forth. It shows despite all their differences, they are all still family. It goes shit-show and out of character like by the end of the story though so, take that with a grain of salt.
Sound - 5/10
Pretty generic, gets the music across I guess but nothing memorable in my opinion.
Enjoyment - 6/10
Loved it at first. I still think it's worth giving a go! It's kind of a hidden little gem. Not perfect but you can definitely find some cute enjoyment out of it and it has it's own charms to it.
Overall - 6/10
Cute and charming, definitely not amazing, but still worth giving a shot!
Okay so if you're like me and watched this on Crunchyroll I can understand why you may not like this show. The beginning had a recap that lasted like 15 minutes, and at the end they would have like a whole segment with real live people that I couldn't figure out what or why? But that is a shame because I think this show is great. The premise is great, a nice mix of slice of life and sci fi. All the characters are fantastic, a wide range of personalities that have a nice dynamic with each other (Snow is my son who has myentire heart and the foster dad is in fact the man who stepped up which is why he is the best). It's a pretty short watch and it ends with loose ends, but I really enjoyed it. Hopefully you will too!
Story: 8. I thought the premise was intriguing. A slice of life dealing with experiments trying to live on their own with the humans. Definitely had potential. I wish they did more with it but I did like seeing what they'd get into each episode so it wasn't that bad. The ending felt so mean spirited. So depressiong Art: 7. It definitely was pretty. Not anything spectacular but I did enjoy looking at it and it definitely was eye catching. Sound: 8. I love the outro and intro and I felt the soundtrack fit well into the story. Ididn't skip the outro or intro song so that's always a good sign.
Characters: 6. They were okay. I did like how in each episode, at least towards the end, it focused on them in relation to the world and their little glimpses of the past. But like the story I wish there was more to them.
Enjoyment: 6. Overall, I did enjoy it. Though I feel the thing that I'm talking about that everyone seems to dislike is the voice actors and those minutes at then end. And. . .well they weren't that bad. Yes it is annoying but it was okay. I do understand why it's annoying and I also get that it needed to be done but it felt way too much of filler (which normally isn't bad) and it definitely needed to be shortened. It dragged way too long and made it more about the voice actors than the show itself.
Overall: 6. With everything said and done. . .I'm giving it a 6. It definitely had so much potential to it and it did have good moments and make me tear up. But the voice action end is way too long and it could've done so much more. Would I watch it again ? Meh maybe if I want to shut my brain off and have something short to watch. Would I watch a second season ? Maybe. Especially to see what they would do after ending it as they did
“Frankenstein Family” is what happens when a solid idea is given the most blue balls, satisfying and down right insulting ending to a season. I’m gonna be honest, I did not expect to like this anime that much, but it surprised me. It actually had a story, something that is lacking in most modern anime. Not a very complicated or original story but a story nonetheless. Secondly, the plot of most episodes actually served the story to create something coherent and with internal logic. Again, not a very good one but still. Before we start I would like to explain something. I will be talking about“plot” and “story”. Many people use those terms interchangeably. I’m not one of those people, so to make sure everyone is on the same page…
I use the definitions for “plot” and “story” as Lisa Cron describes them:
“What happens in the story is the PLOT, the surface events.”
“STORY is about how the things that happen affect someone in pursuit of a difficult goal, and how that person changes internally as a result”.
The main story is about an unusual family trying to survive in an unknown land and find a place they can call home all while trying to keep themselves together (in more ways than one). It’s not a very original story but the execution of it surprised me. I was expecting it to be one dimensional on all fronts and was pleasantly surprised when that was not the case. Yes, the plot is sometimes lazy and happens only because it’s someone's turn to take the centre stage but, again, surprisingly, in most cases it does follow the internal logic of the show.
You might wonder, if I liked this anime, why did I give it just 5. Well, there are 2 reasons for that. Both unfortunately bring down my score in a major way.
The first reason is the fact that the episodes are rather short. Most episodes last between 10 to 15 minutes (I’m eyeballing this, cut me some slack). The rest of the runtime is given to interviews with the voice actors. There is nothing wrong with that per se but it did annoy me, that I have to watch 2 (sometimes 3) episodes to get the same plot and story I would be given in 1 if it had a more traditional format. If You are into this, more power to You. I just skipped those moments because I’m not.
The second, the more damning, reason is the ending. I’ll try not to get into spoiler territory. You get a pretty dramatic setup to something that was in the air for about 3 episodes. The tension grows with every second and right when it reaches its crescendo… we get a cheap, not funny joke, and then the season ends. Blue ball bonanza. This alone slashed a solid 1,5 points from my score.
When it comes to the writing of the rest of the show… it’s actually acceptable for what it wants to be. There is a balance (again, something a lot of anime lack) between drama and comedy. The writers understand that there needs to be contrast for the writing to not become flat and stale. There is enough room for every situation to breathe and sink in. Regardless of whether it’s comedy or drama. Don’t get Your hopes up. There is balance but the plot itself is pretty simplistic and in many cases naive. A lot of situations, especially the dramatic once, could use some more scenes before getting resolved. Still, it is better than most shows that go all in on the comedy, or slice of life, and forget to balance things out.
The characters themselves… yeah… here we come to a problem. For the runtime they get, and the plot they are thrown in… there are too many. We have 5 main characters and it’s painfully obvious that 2 of them are an afterthought. They have little screen time, only have one episode each, where they actually shine and show what they’re about. We have a tsundere, a golden retriever, an airhead, a dandere and something that is mostly the viewer insert. The free spirited airhead and the dandere are the afterthoughts. Shame because they really had potential and provided a much needed contrast to the others. The other three aren’t bad as characters but they don’t bounce off each other as good as they bounce off the afterthoughts. I do believe the tsundere is the only character that actually shows some growth during those 12 episodes, but it’s not enough to make it count. Plus, despite some growth she goes back to her default state rather often.
Every character has their own problems and watching them deal with it is rather enjoyable. Yes, there are moments, quite a few actually, when the resolution is rushed or lazy, but even in those circumstances it does serve the story.
Even the greatest ass pull (the twin sisters episode) serves the story by introducing, showing (not just telling) and reinforces a special bond between them. Despite being the most insulting resolution of all I think I like it the most, just because it has a solid focus on them. There isn’t a moment when someone else has to take the lead to resolve their crisis. They do it themselves, without the help of others. In a lesser show someone else would just swoop in, have an ass pull of his (or her) own and the sisters would be saved without any kind of growth. I can respect a writer that respects its own characters to have them deal with their own shit and come out stronger, and at the same time give the viewers a new understanding of the characters.
At the end of the day, this show won’t reinvent the genre. It’s too simplistic and naïve to be a proper slice of life and is a bit flat to be a noteworthy comedy. It walks on the side of mediocrity with signs of something really special from time to time. It’s a shame that it doesn’t want to commit to that special something.
Despite that I found enjoyment watching this show. Even if the ending is infuriating and whoever thought that it’s a good idea should be sentenced to a few waterboarding sessions.
