Reviews for Cardfight!! Vanguard G
Back to AnimeWhat is it that people enjoy about watching anime? This is of course a trite question since there are so many different personal opinions. Some people enjoy the Harem genre for its approach to comedy, romance and delectable human figures. Other people enjoy Shonen for the action, excitement and spiky haired protagonists. This will usually make writing reviews kind of pointless, since people's likes and dislikes will always overcome the "objective" factors such as quality of characters, depth of story or speed of pacing. The only thing that an anime can really be judged on is its focus, meaning what it tries to accomplish, whetherit's the insane action and visuals of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann or the ocean deep story of Gankutsuou The Count of Monte Cristo. It is what creates personal opinions. I would not say that Hikaru No Go is better than Bokurano, but rather that they focus on completely different things that appeal to different people. So what does this have to do with Cardfight Vanguard G?
The Vanguard anime series has not been anything magnificent so far. It's been a neat series with some fun characters, an interesting card game and an easily understandable plot. Storywise it has always lacked depth and the characters have been fairly generic (at least for those who watched beyblade as a kid). But this has always gone well with what I interpret as the focus of the series, fun. The animation is bright and colorful, the atmosphere is very comfortable and the card game is well presented. I liken it in some ways to Lucky Star, which was never supposed to be viewed as an incredible deep show. Regardless of objective quality of the Vanguard series I still have fun with it, or at least the first two seasons.
Cardfight Vanguard G on the other hand seems to have no idea of what it's focus is supposed to be. Since its called Cardfight Vanguard it needs to have the card game aspect, but they are no longer full games. If you have watched Dual Masters then you know what I am talking about. They only show you highlights rather than full games, which means that the viewer has no concept of the strategy or complexity involved. The "action" part of the anime becomes to simple and feels underdeveloped.
They allocate a lot more time to characters and interaction, but as I establised earlier, the Vanguard series has never had particularly complex characters worth all of this interaction. All of the protagonists are generic good guys with slight differences. Our main Character Shindou Chrono is the mean looking but nice on the inside guy. The secondary tier inclues the mary sue Shion Kiba and the girl Tokoha Anjou. You have seen these characters in tens if not hundreds of animes, movies and video games before. They are predictable both in action and in development and makes the "slice of life" part of the anime boring.
At the time of writing, Cardfight Vanguard G is 19 episodes in and nothing of note has yet to happen. There has been no major tournaments and no big character development. It's kind of like the first season of Yu Gi Oh GX, where the only thing it did was establish the characters. You could argue that it`s the same with G but, as I established earlier, the characters are not complex enough to carry a show on their own without the card game. 19 episodes of what is basically a combination of introduction and filler is an awful way of starting a series. Even if G followed up with 200 great episodes after that it does not make up for the fact that you need to get through 19 episodes of mediocre slough, and this makes the "story" part of the anime drawn out and unnecessary.
Still this is all just my personal opinion. There still seems to be people who do enjoy the series so it would be exceptionally narcissistic to think of my opinion as the only right one. The colorful animation, comfortable atmosphere and likeable, yet generic, characters makes it understandably enjoyable depending on who watches. Personally I need a little more meat in order to fully enjoy a series, but perhaps this is a result of having watched so many anime. I would really only recommend this series to anime newbies, fans of bright and comforting shows or people who are nostalgic for the earlier seasons of Vanguard.
I have yet to understand why this series is praised? Its like a soap opera with card games, but you don't get enough time with the actual cardfight? As you can see by my image, I like Vanguard. I thought all 4 seasons before this series was excellent. They made it almost like Yu-gi-oh and almost kept it guessing. Here comes this new series where you don't see the excitement of cardfights anymore. ITS LITERALLY CALLED CARDFIGHT VANGUARD. If you take away the fights, all you get is a soap opera, where characters mope all the time. Now onto the review everyone was looking for~! Story:5
NO SPOILERS: A lonely kid in middle school discovers a card shop, where people battle using Vanguard. At first he finds no interest, but like Aichi from the first series he gets sucked in and makes some "cardfight" friends. Unlike the original Vanguard the plot is slow and gets no where really quickly. The first season had a goal, and that goal was set and achieved. Now we got people skipping Cardfights that last only 4 minutes. BEST YET, they don't check for drive triggers. Its like the creators wanted this series to be a soap opera full of fillers and not fighting.
Art: 10
Like all the rest of the Vanguard series, the artwork is amazing. They know exactly how to make a monster come out of a card and attack, but those monsters are short-lived because they are only on the field for...... 20 seconds before the end of the cardfight is near. Still the artwork is amazing.
Sound: 4
There isn't much to say about the sound. Its the same as all the series, same sound effects different battle themes and musical themes. Its okay, I'll give it that. The voice acting is alright as well.
Character: 4
Referring to most of my points, character's get built and relationships get formed with cardfighting which does happen, but when you don't see them struggle or even see the cardfight, how are you suppose to make character development. MOST OF THE DEVELOPMENT, was outside the fights. Where someone talks some sense into a mopey character. This same character development is used throughout the entire series, including the ones to come. I feel like they rushed it too quickly and had a good idea in there heads, but were too lazy to put in the effort.
Enjoyment: 1
I could not enjoy this at all. Cardfights were the highlight of the series before that. You take it away, its a dumb show. Its like Yu-gi-oh without the duels or Gundam without the mechas. Why did I watch all 48? I expected more, so much more and I gave it more chances than ever. Every episode continued to give me more disappointments. Like most people are going to tell me, "Well it's not like the original." I didn't expect it to be the original, I expected cardfights with a good story line *ahem* Link Joker, Legion Mate. Vanguard went down a lot by making this series.
Overall: 2
I suggest anyone who is a Vanguard fan, stay away from this series. You will regret it, if u think the new characters is gonna be like the old series. I suggest you forget about this series and wait until they actually care about the cardfights and the characters. Just let the whole G series blow over and wait for a new series where they fix there mistakes.
This is it, they finally did it, they screwed up so badly I dropped it after episode 10 because in episode 10 they practically flipped me off with 15 minutes of time wasting and in the last 5 minutes 'oh wow let's fight right now!, oh sorry out of time' so this is it but what do you expect when you dont even get full fights, maybe but this is taking lazy to a whole new level, I won't even bother to talk about the story, art, sound, character because just like it wasted my time I won't give this series a full review becauseit doesn't deserve it.
After Legion Mate was so apocalyptically bad, I had to take a four month break from watching through Cardfight Vanguard to cleanse myself of that fourth season. But unfortunately time away did not make this season any better. Not only were the characters and the plot of this season exceedingly tiresome (the villains are a brainwashed cult lead by a narcissist with purple eyeliner and an equestrian area on the roof of a skyscraper), but they don’t even properly show off the fights in this season, it just cuts to random “important moments”. Not to mention this new gimmick of Striding which is incredibly dumband not fully explained.
The current era, D Series, isn’t perfect by any means, but it shows off fights the best and actively moves the story forward at a good pace. Any less than that in a Vanguard series and it’s ultimately a failure.
Story: 1/10 So, we have a 48 episode anime revolving around cardfights yet guess what, no real drawn out cardfights take place. Only canned SOL antics. What were they thinking? Characters: 2/10 What characters? For the lead we have a Gary Stu MC that always wins (never shown though), a girl and generic posh guy. Supporting cast comprises a couple of aged up characters from OG and some joke characters. Basically nobody is developed so who cares. The villains are a hollow Team Asteroid expy. In G I can tell they tried to switch to a more genki shonen MC compared to the original series which had awimpy twink MC but it doesn’t work. Naoki from original did it way better, for one he had natural progression through shown cardfights whereas Chrono’s skill is mostly developed offscreen thanks to G’s baffling direction leading to his future winsteaks coming off as completely unearned. Moreover Chrono becomes a typical Gary Stu who’s never really challenged and wins all his fights outside of low stakes matches (this continues onto future seasons) which compared to Aichi who often lost important matches (bringing in mad tension and hype), had to hard earn his skill and faced inner conflicts yeah he just doesn’t measure up at all. Any personality type can work, what matters is the execution and development. I wouldn't even say Chrono's surface level personality is unlikeable, it's just the Gary Stu treatment (+ his hideous haircut) that ruins him.
Sound & Production Values: 4/10
They got rid of Negishi and sadly the new composer sucks. Production values are as bad as OG.
Overall: 1/10
When you think about it, Cardfight!! Vanguard G is a special type of bad. Kodomo/franchise series generally don’t have good writing to begin with as they’re mostly just dumb shows aimed at kids to sell crap. Yet even then Cardfight!! Vanguard G’s writing is terrible even by kodomo standards and on top of that it most importantly fails to even show any cardfights! Now imagine this series is 48 episodes long; 48 episodes worth of pure dogshit, whereas most notoriously awful series on this level are at least short. Heck, said series at least try to do what they set out to do; Mars of Destruction, Garzey's Wing and Skelter Heaven have some awful action and unintentional comedy value, meanwhile what does G even have? Insufferable paper thin characters hanging out and wasting time for hours upon hours? Just how did they mess up this badly? I can only assume since the director and series producer changed for G they didn’t bother learning what the franchise was about, hence why G did essentially everything wrong. But who knows.
