Reviews for Anima
Back to AnimeAnima is an highly emotional short driven by a tormented piano piece, which remember of Ligeti's Études for piano. The music fits perfectly the dance moves of a female figure which struggle with her body in a painful dance. The short express one of the main strength of animation: the possibility to represent something that a real human figure can't express. The body gesture are extreme, and the taste for plasticity of the director finds in this medium a great tool to convey a varied palette of emotions and movements.
It lasts less than 4 minutes, and still it's hard to watch. Pace of the music is annoying, design is disgusted and dance too emotional, so it seems that the character is hysterical woman. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q91ceXsdXzM Although disciples of of ballet schools may appreciate this video. I do not know.
Rate a 3 musical/art piece (no vocals) Story artistic form of expression of something via dance. Although with no plot what that something is not clear. Therefore can lead and has lead to different takes to what was done and why. Art The art has hinted with its dark nature and color of black the dance piece has a negative outlook. With no warm colors anywhere in sight to me that says there is no hope or no love. The artwork depicts a nude female form but in fast motion. Which tells me a couple things. That with the nude depiction there is no fear of self. For the fastmovement indicates tons of pressure. As for the flail of appendages that illustrates connections. All of which sounds like a life a regular woman. In other words, sociable, strong with emotions and self confident. My issue is to why the dark outlook? Is the artist stressing how all these features are a woman's cry for help?
Something else to consider was how quick the piece was and how it was drawn. While a screen-cap can show you a naked woman a clip of the film can show you a lookalike Tarzan(male). Was that intended? Was the artist making a statement on how while different in genders they are no different than men? So much to take in.
Sound
Portrays a dark ominous presence.
To be blunt, I've no idea what did I just watch. At one point, the main character in this short became spider-man from my perspective, at one point somewhat resembling the girl from The Ring from. The animation is accompanied by a piano that performs a minimalistic composition that does not have a much logic behind it in terms of harmony, but it does seem to follow some kind of structure, or so I feel. It doesn't sound completely random, and rather seems to have been written to create an eerie atmosphere for the viewer. The animation was relatively good, albeit the textures used were somewhatodd for the floor and the roof. Can't say much more than this.
TL;DR
I have no idea what have I just seen, but there you have it. I didn't gain anything from this piece, but it has gained an additional view from me. I think I'm giving this particular score mostly due to the piano performance.
